Thesis & Subtopics

By now, your proposal should have been approved and you have collected the bulk of your research. It’s time to develop your tentative thesis statement and subtopics for the body of your research.

You may have noticed your ideas about your topic have changed or even been challenged due to your research. You’ll need to develop a solid thesis statement. The thesis statement is typically the last sentence of your introduction. A thesis statement is not your opinion or a matter of fact, it is a clear and concise statement (argument) that you support in your paper (see example thesis statements).

Subtopics are the headings that identify the main body of your research. You need to create 3-5 subheadings based on the research you have done. For example, a student studying the effects of overtime on nursing staff burnout might have collected research that leads to three subheadings: Statistics of Nursing Overtime, Causes of Nursing Burnout, and

Psychological Effects of Burnout.

Note** The subheadings in your research do not include your conclusions or inferences, they simply synthesize and present the information from the research you have collected into coherent sections. Do not present results in your subheading sections. We will present results in our draft paper next week.

Criteria for Thesis & Subheadings:

Title

Introduction (this may come from week 1) – include your tentative thesis statement

3-5 subheadings – include topic sentences that describe what is covered under each subheading and transition sentences that lead to the next subheading

References – Include references used in this paper

Your completed assignment should be written third person and should be 3-5 pages in length (not including title page and references). Your assignment should use APA style formatting.

DISCUSSION PAPER TOPIC CHOICES
1.) Examination of a Federal Election- This report will examine an election of a chief executive (President) at the federal level. If a federal election is chosen, you MUST use the Federal Elections Commission’s website at www.fec.gov as a source. If you are unsure about your topic, please have it approved/reviewed beforehand. Finally, be sure to touch on the following points: • Historical Significance- What are the most significant facts about the election. What major event(s) did it cause or have an effect on? Was there a power shift? • Candidates- Who were the major candidates? What did they do before? What did they do after (especially the loser)? • Interesting Facts about Process- What led to the respective candidates running for office (primaries, runoffs, etc.)? What were the finances involved? What roles did the parties play? What about the media and interest groups? How was public opinion a factor? What were the campaign strategies? Where did the candidates spend most of their time? What were the respective platforms of the candidates? What were some important campaign strategies used? • Outcome- Who won? What were the final vote counts (include Electoral College results for federal elections)? Any interesting trends among gender, regions, races, etc.? • Political Impacts/Conclusion- What were the effects of the election? How did it compare to what took place in 2016 or a previous election year? What was the historical impact of the election? Did the exit polls hold up? Cite some examples of some class topics and how they pertain to this election. Be sure to then conclude your thoughts in a logical and concise manner.

2.) Examination of a Federal Law or Supreme Court Decision – In this report, you will be expected to pick out a piece of legislation (that became law) or a court decision that was of major importance. Discuss the history of the case/law. Why it was important? Who were the major players and what side(s) of the issue were they on? What was the historical significance of the case/law? What has occurred since it was passed or the decision was made? What role did the media/public opinion/interest groups play? Use different facts, statistics, and other supporting evidence to tell the story of the case/law and conclude with a summary of its overall impacts and effectiveness. If you are unsure about your topic, please have it approved/reviewed beforehand.
SOURCES
1.) Required Number of Sources You may use any sources necessary (internet, books, journal/magazine articles, newspaper articles) with a minimum of five (5) sources. Wikipedia and other online sources that allow for arbitrary changes to be made are NOT acceptable resources to be used. You should also not use your textbook as a source unless you absolutely cannot find an alternate source for that information. If you have a question about a potential source, please ask ahead of time.
2.) Citations/Plagiarism As mentioned, plagiarism will not be tolerated. To put it plainly, plagiarism is the use of another’s work without due regard to that person’s credit. The proper citation method is to put in quotations a direct quote sentence and follow the end of the sentence (before the period) with the author’s name and page number. For example, quoting Anderson’s article on page 20 would look like this: (Anderson 20). You should use this method at the end of a sentence/paragraph that is also a paraphrase; that is to say, a section that may be in your own words but takes an idea directly from another source. The source should, of course, also be in your bibliography.
3.) Bibliography/Works Cited Page Logistics The first line should have as a centered heading: Bibliography/Works Cited. Your entries (in proper MLA or APA format) should be listed alphabetically by the author’s last name. If you have any questions on this, please feel free to contact me

The research project paper should consist of the following sections:

• Introduction: This section identifies the criminal justice field that
  the student has selected and includes a brief
  description of why this field is of interest
  (recommended length: no more than one page).
• Competencies: In this section, you will identify at least three
  competencies required for the selected criminal justice field and
  explain why each is important to the field. This section
  should be based upon research that you have conducted
  about the selected field and supported with at least two cited
  resources (recommended length: one page).
• Professional interview: In this section, you will summarize the interview
  conducted with a professional working in their selected
  field of criminal justice (NCIS Agent). It is important for you to
  begin this section by identifying the person interviewed
  and his or her current position (NCIS Agent) within the selected
  criminal justice field (recommended length: one to two pages).
• Evaluation: In this section, you will evaluate the selected field of
  criminal justice by discussing the following questions and
  supporting the evaluation with cited resources (recommended
  length: one to two pages):

  • How did the competencies you identified for this field of criminal
    justice align or differ from the
    information obtained during the interview
    with a criminal justice professional?
  • What learning goal would you like to set for yourself during this
    course, month, or year based on the
    skill sets and requirements discovered
    during your research and based upon the
    interview with a criminal justice
    professional?

While the level of detail in each section of the research paper will vary,
it is anticipated that the final paper will be approximately five to six pages

NOTE:
Part of the purpose of a reference is to lead your reader
back to the sources you used. Imagine a person reads your paper and wants to
find out more information about your topic. The reader can refer to your
reference list to locate the sources you used to find information. However,
certain types of sources, like a private conversation, cannot be located. No
one can read a transcript of your interview (unless you recorded it). The
information the interviewee passed on to you is not recoverable by other
researchers, so it does not go in the reference list. This kind of source
(interviews, private letters and e-mail, personal conversations, phone calls,
etc.) is called a personal communication. Cite it in text only, give initials
as well as the surname of the person involved, and give as precise a date as
possible. Again, this type of source is ONLY cited in text. There will be no
reference citation on the reference list.

The two examples of how personal communication citations can be done are
below:

1. T. Smith (personal communication, March 19, 2013) indicates that …
2. …from a police custody inspector’s prospective (T. Smith, personal
   communication, March 19, 2013).
