There are several different coding certifications. I have narrowed them down to 3 to talk about. The three certifications I did research on were RHIA, AAPC, and AMCA. The RHIA stands for Registered health information administrator. RHIA for members is $229 and $299 for nonmembers to take the exam. If you hold one credential recertification the fee is $218.If you hold more than one credential recertification fee is $218, and $50 for each additional certification. To get an RHIA credential you would have to complete an on-campus, online, or a hybrid bachelors’ program in health information management or health information technology that is accredited by the commission on accreditation for health informatics and information management education. Next is AAPC for an online proctored exam it is $299 for a physical proctored exam it is $399. Costs for upkeeping for AAPC is a $180 renewal fee. The amount of continuing education is a maximum of 16 CEUS for the first presentation per core credential, per two-year renewal period. The AAPC recommends having an associate’s degree but it is not required. Lastly, we have the AMCA. The AMCA charge is $109 and the study material is included. To renew for recertification, it is $79 per 5 credits. You would need 10 continuing education credits every two years to keep the AMCA certification current. Qualifications include you must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and must also meet 1 of the following requirements. Graduating from a training program, pass the exam, and have a minimum 1-year experience directly related to the credential. My plans for certification after graduation is to take a few of these tests and possibly further my education as well as have a job pursuing my career in the medical field.

AHIMA has many options to earn your first credential. For professional coders the credentials they offer include Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P). The credential that interests me the most to earn first would be the CCA. The CCA is an entry-level coding certification. This credential shows you have the understanding with all settings, including hospitals and physician practices. The cost for this exam is $299 for non-members, $199 for members. Requirements the students must have before taking this exam are, they must have their high school diploma or equivalent and 6 months of coding experience directly applying codes. The recertification process ensures that certified professionals stay up to date in the constantly evolving medical field. A professional must have a specified number of Continuing Education Units, CEUs during a 2-year certification cycle. Once you have one AHIMA credential you must earn either 20 or 30 CEUs depending on the which credential you already have, before you recertify. You can earn these by the hours you work in HIM domain or participation in continuing education activities. The recertification fee is $218 for holding one credential. If you have more than one already it will be $218 plus $50 for every credential you hold.
AAPC offers professional coders the Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coding (COC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), and Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC). The certificate that interests me the most would be the CPC certification this credential has a high excellence reputation. The price for this exam is $299 online and $399 at a physical location. Proof of education or experience isn’t technically necessary to take this exam, but if you do not have it then you will be designated Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A). AAPC membership is required to be renewed annually and 36 CEUs must be submitted every 2 years for verification and authentication of expertise. You don’t need to recertify for a CPC certificate as long as you enter your CEUs.
AMCA offers two certifications for medical coding and billing, Medical Coder and Biller Certification (MCBC) and Billing Coding Specialist Certification (BCSC) which is $109 for both exams. Luckily, I am already scheduled for my BCSC exam in my last term of college. A Billing Coding Specialist can be known as multiple titles, Reimbursement Specialist, Coding Specialist, or health information technologist.
My plans for certification after graduation is earning my CPC first. It seems the most reasonable for myself as an entry-level. I have been thinking a lot about holding more than one credential in my future. I’ve just changed my careers and have been looking for anything in the medical field, but no luck just yet. Once I have a little more hands on experience I definitely plan to move forward in the field.

Wow week 10 and final week already! Time flies when you are having fun! Health Care Administration was a great class and widened my knowledge on what to expect as healthcare administrator. I learned so much and it really makes me excited to work as one in the future. I really gained a lot of information on how the United States healthcare field is and the policies, laws, rules that come with working in this field. UR The Life You Save Might Be Your Own Discussion Responses Writing Assignment Help
DQ1:After reading “The Life You Save May Be Your Own”, I decided to use the feminist theory. The setting of the story seems to be set up in an older time which was a time when women were expected to act and do certain things. When Mr. Shiftlet began working for the old woman for a little while, the old woman stated that Mr. Shiftlet should marry Lucynell. Earlier in the story, the old man said, “She can sweep the floor, cook, wash, feed the chickens, and hoe” (O’Connor, Pg 4). When the old woman stated this, I connected the feminist theory to the story because this is a standard that was set for women for centuries.
I chose this theory to help better understand the story because it helps show the time period that it seems to be written in as well as how the characters thought. Even though the old woman’s husband had died, and she knows she is capable of taking care of herself, she still has the mindset implemented at that time. Later in the story when the old woman is speaking about how Lucynell would be a good wife, Mr. Shiftlet says, “She wouldn’t give me any trouble” (O’Connor, pg. 6). This shows that Mr. Shiftlet agrees and wants a woman who will listen to him with no problems as well as do cooking and cleaning like they believe the woman should do.
After implementing the feminism theory to this story, I realize that the standards set for women at that time in history are very degrading and were unrecognized. It was seen as normal to men and women in that time in history, and it was said that certain characteristics in a woman like cooking and cleaning were important to become a wife instead of how genuine the female was. It came off that Mr. Shiftlet was a very respectful man, but after I had realized the feminism in the story, it is actually very disrespectful to understand the mindset he had about Lucynell. It is astounding what we can learn after looking through a different and specific lens when reading literature.
DQ2: While reading, “The Life You Save may be Your Own,” I found the Historicism literary theory to be the most useful in helping me understand the story. There were several clues in the story to make me think it was set in the 1940-50s. One of the reasons I believe this to be true is because the old woman in the story said,” I’ll give you fifteen dollars for a weekend trip.”(O’Connor 1) Can you imagine taking a trip in 2021 with only fifteen dollars? I can barely eat fast food for that price. And because her car was ‘28 or’29 Ford that had not cranked for fifteen years.
Since I realized that the story was set in a different time, I was able to understand why the lady married her daughter off and why Mr. Shiftlet was willing to work for just food. Although, I believe all he really wanted was the car. Back in the day people would hire someone based on their word. If Mr. Shiftlet had been looking for a job in 2021, he would have had to have a resume, references, and probably a degree of some kind.I also understood why the daughter had not been taught sign language at school to help her communicate with others. In 2021 programs for children with special needs typically start not long after birth. If this story had been based in modern times, the daughter would have been able to communicate with her mother.
I enjoy reading literature that is set in the past because life seemed so simple back then. I love thinking about the old lady and her daughter rocking in their chairs while watching the sun go down. They did not have phones to distract them from each other or social media to spread rumors or hate. I can only dream of a world that is so simple.
DQ3: In the story “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” one of the main conflicts is internal. Mr. Shiflet struggles with reality. He cares more about self-fulfillment than material gain. At one point he started speaking on restlessness of the spirit. “A body and a spirit,” he repeated. “The body, lady, is like a house: it doesn’t go anywhere; but the spirit, lady, is like an automobile: always on the move, always…” (Pg 7). This gave me the impression that he was a restless soul who could not find his place in the world. Throughout the story I do not think the conflict was solved, Mrs. Crater made it worse and believed his lies. At the beginning of the story Mr. Shiflet came walking up to the old lady house and started talking to her as if he were there to help around but did not want anything in return. Later in the story he started using her to get the car fixed and agreed to marry her daughter so he could get the cash and car. He went from being an honest hardworking handy man to someone who took her daughter off just to leave her at the diner away from home and took the car that belonged to her husband who had passed.
DQ4: In the story of, “The Life You Save may be Your Own,” I believe Mr. Shiftlet is struggling with internal conflicts. He was raised to be a decent man but life has turned him into a selfish, inconsiderate person. At the beginning of the story, it seems that Mr. Shiftlet is a knight in shining armor that came to rescue Lucynell and her mother. He truly seems to want to do the right thing but his eye is always on that Ford in the garage. We see Mr. Shiftlet’s convictions the most when he is approached with the idea of marrying Lucynell. He does not want to marry Lucynell because he does not have enough money to take her on a honeymoon getaway. The idea of owning that Ford takes over his inner goodness and he agrees to marry Lucynell. Mr. Shiftlet resolves his conflict by giving into his selfish desires. He wasn’t raised to abandon someone the way he does Lucynell but he does it anyway. In just a few paragraphs we see Mr. Shiftlet change from a man with a good heart to one that only cares about himself.

As we have recently seen during the pandemic that the President, here representing the federal government and its efforts during these times have not yielded the changes Americans need, therefore encouraging the rise of states, whose efforts have been nation-saving. “In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo demonstrates a level of commitment, focus and grit absent from a rudderless national government. In Massachusetts, Governor Charlie Baker is putting in place a mass testing and tracking system that will, if it succeeds, will show other states,( and Washington,D.C.) how it can be done”(Gerstle,2020) as well as many other highly recognizable efforts made by states. Imagine if they had to wait for the federal government to come to agreeing terms as In cooperate federalism before the best decisions to help the safety of citizens can be carried out as regard Covid-19.
DQ2: Cooperative federalism is an attempt to ensure that there is the establishment of some flexible relationships between the state and federal governments. It works towards ensuring that both levels of government work in unison in numerous programs and work out issues together. The term cooperative federalism developed during the New Deal under President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. It aimed at giving the federal government the power to address issues caused by the Great Depression adequately. On the other hand, New Federalism was a political philosophy that was introduced in America with the aim of strengthening the powers of the states. There was an eventual transfer of some specific powers from the federal government to the states. The concept of new federalism was introduced by President Nixon in 1984 with the aim of developing numerous domestic approaches that would foster a new vision for America. Eventually, it became easier to share power between the states and the federal government by devolving responsibility, power, and funds.
The cooperative model of federalism works best for the United States. It aims at reducing the overlapping of powers and functions between the states and the federal government. With the model, there is a distinction between these laws. Cooperative federalism ensures that there is a proper division of power between the state and federal governments. An example is how the federal government gives a proportion of the tax returns to the states with the aim of funding the construction of highways. These states are then tasked with the responsibility of controlling the construction and maintenance of these roads upon completion. Irrespective of the state in which the highway construction process is taking place, the outcome must meet the established standards by the federal government.
DQ3: One topic I would like to speak on is marijuana legalization and the challenges federalism brings forth to the table. Certain states have already legalized the plant and have seen revenue like nothing before. What happens when a state legalizes marijuana? Does the federal government just go away when a state makes new laws concerning marijuana? Actually, no it does not go away. Federal Government still considers marijuana a controlled substance no matter what the state laws are. Vice versa, if the federal government were to lift marijuana from the controlled substances, states would not have to abide by those guidelines. To me that is kind of defeats the purpose to even have a federal government if the states can still make their own laws concerning different topics. This is why federalism fails at certain issues at hand and thrives in others. Certain decisions need to be made as a whole decision for the country, and some decisions need to made at the local level. Completely legalizing marijuana would take cooperation from the federal and each state’s government. As it would help our economy thrive and release so many individuals from prisons serving petty possessions charges and give back lives to so many people who never deserved to be locked up in the first place.
DQ4: On Marijuana, there is no mutual federal-state policy; will this cause Federalism to go up in smoke (Adler, 2020)? Get it? Marijuana occupies quiet a special place in American legal grounds since it is the only product prohibited by the federal government, and yet is increasingly authorized, regulated and taxed under law and makes me wonder if this isn’t a prime example of the government contradicting itself.

As we are all aware, the so-called medical marijuana laws have obviously been inconsistent with federal prohibitions as a lot of states have begun to create exceptions to their criminal laws. ” In 2009, the Obama administration issued the Ogden memorandum, designed to guide United State Attorneys around the country in responding to marijuana law reform In their state” (Center for the study of Federalism, 2019) but after few months of doubt, the Obama Administration decided it was just best to get out of the way and jus allow states experiment with marijuana law reform to continue and since then Congress has gone as far as preventing the Department of Justice from using appropriate government funds in marijuana persecution of those using is for “medical purposes” in a lot of states.
This back and forth between the federal government making laws concerning the use, production and selling of marijuana including the different prosecution laws put in place for such and the States rising up, doing their own thing, especially if they have their own ways of monitoring the use and abuse in their states will continue to be an issue that will be a challenge to federalism in the next decade and even further.
