After watching Before the Flood and completing the Before the Flood Pre-screening & Screening Activities, complete the following:
- In 2-3 paragraphs (~400-600 words) create an analytical response that:
- Introduces the film, the filmmaker & narrator, discusses the filmmakers’ overall argumentative purpose, and intended audience
- Identifies and analyzes at least 2 major claims made throughout the film and evaluates how the filmmakers use rhetorical appeals and rhetorical strategies to support their claims. Your response should be supported with at least 2 direct quotations, paraphrase or summary with proper citations from the film in each paragraph
- Avoid simply naming the appeals — logos, pathos, ethos — in your response. Your task here is to discuss HOW they work by analyzing the rhetorical strategies used to achieve the appeals.
- You should not use “I”. When you discuss how the appeals work, focus on the viewer or audience reaction.
Please be sure to properly introduce/integrate & cite any quotations used using MLA format.
- Review “Writing Resources” -> “Integrating Quotations,” “Summary vs. Paraphrase” & “Summary, Paraphrase & Quoting”
- Review “MLA: In-text Citations: The Basics” -> “Time-based media sources for proper in-text citations.
- Please note: Netflix calculates time backwards (showing time left, not time lapsed). The citations must be in time lapsed, (start time – end time) for any paraphrase, summary or direct quotation use from the film.

Rubric for Special Populations Paper
Description: Choose a special population topic. (Best to confirm with me the topic) Examples should NOT include “typical” special populations like pregnancy or diabetes. Think of someone with a chronic condition that affects them physically or mentally.
What changes would you make to the assessment.? What literature supports this?
Write a paper on HOW you would give that person a fitness assessment with the current needs they have. (this may or may not include eliminating or substituting an assessment based on their needs).
In your first paragraph you should identify your purpose “This purpose of this paper is to identify the accommodations…….”
-Describe in detail the overview of that population
-use the info of a real or “made up” person to use for the paper.
-explain special considerations to remember for this particular client. (medications)
-explain any exercise contraindications for that population (exercises they absolutely should not do or reasons they shouldn’t exercise)
-discuss/identify the clients risk stratification and precautions that may need to be taken.
-Go through each assessment (: bp/hr, waist/hip/, body comp, flexibility cardiovascular endurance testing and muscle endurance) and explain how you would or would not assess that person and accommodations you would make accordingly.

CHAPTER 7 HOMEWORK
7.49 The area under each curve in Figure 7.11 on page 179 is estimated by adding the areas under the initial elastic region and the flat regions under the curve. This area under the curve is toughness. The data is given in the table below. Plot the graph of the Toughness (y axis) versus Temperature (x axis) (plot the points and then draw a curve through the points). Use the scale from -40 to 100 by 20 on the x-axis and use the scale 100 to 800 by 100 on the y-axis.
Temperature (oC) Toughness (Mj/m3)
-25 140
0 635
25 760
50 730
65 520
80 270
7.51 Use the materials shown in the table below. The formula for maximum deflection (d) of a cantilevered beam is d = P * L3 / (3 * E * I), where P is the load (50 kg = 490 N, use P = 490 N), L is the beam length (L = 1 m), E is the elastic modulus, and I is the moment of inertia (I = b*h3/12, where b = 0.02 m and h = 0.075 m, so I = 7.03 x 10-7). Calculate the maximum deflection. ANSWER IN METERS.
Material Elastic Modulus (E) (Pa)
ABS 2.1 x 109
Acetal 2.45 x 109
Epoxy 10.25 x 109
ABS, reinforced 7.5 x 109
Acetal, reinforced 10 x 109
Epoxy, reinforced 36.5 x 109
Aluminum 70 x 109
Steel 195 x 109
Note: The results show that ABS has the most deflection and steel the least.
7.53 Use the table of values below. The formula for required weight (N) is W = p * g * F * L / σy where p is the density, g is the gravitational constant (9.81 m/s2), F = 5000 N, L = 1 m, and
σy is the UTS. Calculate the required weight. ANSWER IN KILOGRAMS.
Material Density (p) (kg/m3) UTS (σy) (N/m2)
HMW polyethylene 950 2.4 x 107
Polyester 1270 5 x 107
Rigid PVC 1400 4.1 x 107
ABS 1030 3 x 107
Polystyrene 1000 3.2 x 107

DISCUSSION POST MUST BE 10+ SENTENCES AND THE PEER REVIEW MUST BE 7+ SENTENCES PLEASE USE YOUR OWN WORDS AND DO NOT COPY FROM OTHER SITES STAY ON TOPIC ,BE POSITIVE , AND DO NOT COMMENT ON GRAMMAR ERRORS. TALK DIRECTLY TO CLASSMATES IN PEER REVIEWS!!!
1) DISCUSSION QUESTION
Find an online article (news, magazine, journal, etc.) on any subject that interests you that uses statistics to make its conclusion. Share a link in this thread.
Now answer these questions about that article:
- What is the premise and conclusion of the argument based on statistics?
- Determine whether or not the argument uses any deceptive statistics.
- Give your opinion on whether or not the argument has persuaded you. Explain why or why not.
- Determine the primary ways in which statistics or authority are used in your current position in developing persuasive arguments and provide examples here.
2) PEER REVIEW (ASHLEY)
Prevalence of and Trends in Diabetes Among Veterans
According to statistics, the prevalence of diabetes in US veterans is more than the entire population. This is because of the high incidence of obesity among the veteran population. Diabetes and obesity are genetically linked. The percentage of people with diabetes who were diagnosed dropped from 72.5% 2005-2008 to 6.7% in 2009-2012. In the NHANES participants, diabetes prevalence increased from 15.5% to 20% from 2005-2008. However, in the other surveys from 2009 to 2014, the number remained constant at 20%. Furthermore, the statistics showed that the prevalence of diabetes by the level of poverty did not decrease with the increasing income.
The argument uses deceptive statistics because the data on female veterans were not included. Additionally, the data did not report female veterans with the diabetes disorder which in reality it is not true. Also in the NHANES participants, the available data do not distinguish between the people who have type 1diabetes and those who have type 2diabetes. A more accurate data should be nationwide data with VA data which are more precise. There is no citation to prove the credibility of these data.
This argument has not persuaded me. I am not sure of the credibility of the statistical data provided. The obesity argument has not convinced me because according to the statistical data presented, it is health wise evident that a majority of obese people are highly susceptible to diabetes. Furthermore, the accuracy of NHANES data is not verified as compared with VA data.
Manufacturing Statistics is used in the manufacturing industry to show the sales volumes to the production volumes. The statistical data on sales maybe exaggerated to motivate the production employees to improve on efficiency to increase on the production volumes to achieve the necessary targets. For example, the number of cases of soda sold in August in Carolina was 1,708,180. This figure is more considering that average sales have never exceeded 1,200,000 cases.

3) PEER REVIEW (KEYANAH)
https://www.shape.com/lifestyle/beauty-style/82-percent-cosmetic-advertising-claims-are-bogus
The piece that I decided to write about is from an online beauty and lifestyle journal. Based on the argument the premise states that “By organizations exhibiting admirable images of woman and a beauty product with simply wordplay, these organizations can convince its customers that they will become ageless and have flawless skin.” These are the commercials professing to fuel our wants through emotions an emotional appeal. The conclusion is “to find a workable skin or hair care routine, you as the consumer must do the research and find the credibility in what is being advertised to you.”
I found the statistics to be true with sources being The Journal for Global Fashion Marketing. Also, Being a Hairstylist and Makeup Artist, I attend seminars and continued education classes that further educate us on cosmetic and hair care products. And the harsh chemicals to look for and potential benefits of certain ingredients for differences in people’s skin and hair.
Based on the argument of the writer Rachel Jacoby Zoldan, I agree and I am persuaded to actually read the information ofn products that make guarantees of youthfulness; or says a product is clinically and scientifically proven and endorsed by people of authority.
