A key element of effective decision making is ensuring a problem statement truly reflects the full scope and root cause(s) of a business situation. Anyone can say that there are problems that need to be resolved to improve effectiveness. However, these problems are often merely effects from other causes that may or may not be related to the actual problem.
The use of a fishbone diagram allows decision makers to assess potential causes and effects related to problems in a visual format. In this assignment, you will outline the perceived cause and effect relationships associated with the fishbone diagram. This process allows decision makers to reflect upon, note, and determine key factors that can be the root cause and effects associated with a given problem. The process is essential to eliminating factors that may at first appear to be the cause of a problem. Therefore, the key causes and related effects are focused on.
For the second part of this assignment, you will follow sequential steps to restate the draft of the problem statement you crafted earlier for your workplace problem. This process will enable you to view the problem from different viewpoints, perspectives, and lenses. The process of restatement allows decision makers and problem solvers to have confidence that the true problem and all of its elements have been properly identified, concisely defined, and effectively stated for appropriate action to take place. Now that you have analyzed the causes and effects of your potential decision, problem, or opportunity, you are now ready to finalize your problem statement. Remember to keep your problem statement short and focus on descriptive verbs.
Action Items
There are two parts to this assignment.
Part 1: Cause and Effect Analysis
- Review the draft of your problem from Week 1.
- Develop a fishbone diagram outlining the related causes and effects of your problem, based on your readings for this week.
Note: The fishbone diagram must be produced in a software program such as Microsoft Word or Excel, not hand-drawn. There are templates readily available online if you search for terms like “fishbone diagram template” or “cause-and-effect template.” Some free and easy-to-use fishbone templates are available at ISixSigma and at Microsoft Online. The following template is also available from ASQ:
- Write a 1-page explanation of the cause-and-effect analysis technique, describe its role in the problem-solving process, and describe your findings and key points after creating your own fishbone diagram (i.e., make note of the main causes of the problem). Both the diagram and the 1-page explanation must be submitted in the assignment.
- Note: See the multimedia presentation Cause and Effect: Fishbone Diagramming for guidance in your work.
Part 2: Problem Restatement and Definition
- Review the draft of the problem statement you developed in Week 1.
- In about 2-3 pages, address the following:
- Explain the importance of defining and framing a problem correctly.
- Demonstrate the use of the problem statement testing technique or another technique for framing and defining your problem statement.
- Test your problem statement by using the following 5 problem restatement techniques by Jones (1998) and/or techniques described in the Eleven Ways to Restate Problems to Get Better Solutions from this week’s reading material.
- Paraphrase: Restate the problem using different words. What is really the issue?
- 180 Degrees: Turn the problem completely around. What is the opportunity here?
- Broadening the Focus: Restate the problem in a larger context. How is the problem part of the bigger picture?
- Redirection: Change the overall focus of the problem. What does it look like from another perspective?
- Why Ask Why: Review the original problem, ask why again, and then answer that question. Keep on asking “why” again as necessary. What’s at the bottom of the problem, underlying everything?
Note: Access and view the multimedia presentation Problem Restatement for guidance in your work.
- Conclusion: End your paper with 2–3 paragraphs, including the following items:
- Final problem statement: Restate your problem in a final form and in one sentence. Phrase the problem as a “How…” question (as in “How can we improve quality?” or “How can we reduce patient waiting times in the doctor’s office?”).
- Clarification of changes: Note whether or not the changes in your problem statement are based on the application of the restatement process. If your problem statement did change, justify why and how you changed it.
- Newly discovered problem knowledge: State what you discovered through the problem restatement process that may require further investigation or research.
Organization of the Paper
For submission, organize all of your work into a single document using this outline and the appropriate section headings (indicated below in bold font).
- Introduction: A brief introduction and recap of the problem background.
- Cause and Effect Analysis: Include your written discussion of the cause and effect analysis followed by your fishbone diagram.
- Problem Restatement and Definition: Include an explanation of what this process involves, why it is important in the problem-solving process, and explain the steps you used to write and re-write the problem statement to arrive at the final, well-defined problem statement.
- Final Problem Statement: Phrased as an active “how” question.
- Conclusion: Write concluding remarks to this paper.

Disparities in Teen Pregnancy & Bulliying Questions Writing Assignment Help
Purpose:
The goal of having a class blog is to provide you with (a) practice searching the literature for interesting and relevant research; (b) experience communicating science to a non-expert audience; and (c) the opportunity to engage more deeply with topics of specific interest that may not be covered in the planned text or lecture topics.
What you will do:
Each person in the course will contribute to a class blog.
- Write a blog post using any of the Types of blogs below.
- 400-500 words in length (appx. 1 page)
- Use 3 empirical journal articles for each blog to support your claims (see below (Links to an external site.))
- Blogs are due on Saturdays at midnight.
- Topics are chosen based on your own interest in developmental psychology
- See submission guidelines here (Links to an external site.)
- Comment on at least 5 posts
- Due anytime before the last day of class (Friday, June 6, 2020).
Types of blogs
Using https://genderpsych323.wordpress.com/ (Links to an external site.) as a guide, your contributions to the blog will include 2 posts which include any of the types below. Blogs must focus on childhood development (pregnancy, infants, childhood, parenting, etc).
- “Research Spotlight” – summary of a recent (last 5 years) empirical article. (This is the only one that requires only 1 journal article).
- “Child Psychology and Pop Culture” – examination of media (books, video) using multiple journal articles/ child psychology concepts.
- “Fact Checker” – examination of a claim you find in the media. Think of this as “I read/heard that ___, but in reality the research says ___”
- “Hot Topic” – Review of a particular research area that summarize findings from a handful of articles (e.g., “Top 10 reasons for ___” or “A Step by Step Guide for ___”)
- “Q&A”– Pose an interesting question about development in children/ adolescents, then provide an answer backed up by research. This can take the form of an advice column (i.e., write a fictional “Dear Researcher” letter to then respond to).
Using empirical journal articles
For each type of blog, you will need to use empirical journal articles as the foundation (not class notes or textbooks). When using a journal article, you should indicate the key results as well as how the study was done in your own words (i.e., avoid quotes and be sure to avoid plagiarizing). Be sure to provide sufficient detail (more than you can simply get from the Abstract) so that someone unfamiliar with the study understands what was done in the study and what they found.
Topic Selection:
Choose a topic related to childhood development. Ideally, this will be a topic that we do not cover in depth in class, in order to broaden our scope, but if you are especially inspired by an article that mirrors (or contradicts!) something we learn in class, go for it! If you have questions or concerns about the appropriateness of a source or topic, please check in with me.
Audience:
As this is for a general audience, that means they may NOT have the background knowledge that you do. Some tips for writing for a general audience:
- Avoid jargon, or words that we only use in psychology. For example, we will learn the term “habituation” in class, but it may mean nothing to someone who doesn’t know about psychology. So, you should define what habituation is for them.
- Avoid terms like “prove” or “proven”. One study cannot prove anything!
- Keep it readable. Keep your word usage lower than a 12th grade level on the Fleish-Kincaid grade score. Read more here: https://blogging.com/readability/ (Links to an external site.)
- Test your readability here (Links to an external site.), or here (Links to an external site.)

Submission:
To submit, you need to do 2 things:
- Add your post to your discussion board. This is so that others will be able to respond and comment on your blog post.
- Add your post also to the TurnItIn assignment.
Submission Checklist / Requirements:
Blog must include:
- An interesting title
- An image / video, with an appropriate APA citation at end of paper
- APA-style in-text citations
- APA-style references at end of post
- 1 for Research Spotlight, and at least 3 for all other article types
At bottom of submission write out the following about your paper:
- Blog type
- Word count (400-500 words)
- Flesch Kincaid reading level (less than grade 12 (Links to an external site.))
- Keywords: 2-5 useful keywords
Make sure to submit each paper in two places:
- On course discussion board: Class blog
