2. Interestingly enough when I first began learning about psychology and I heard about Forensic psychology I imagined these were the guys who would be after serial killers and part detectives. But now that I know what the job involves it definitely doesn’t seem like a career I would like to pursue. One of my favorite movies is Law Abiding Citizen mainly because it touches on how the system seems to be automated. Obviously the saying “Can’t please everyone” exists for a reason but I just couldn’t be apart of something where I might find myself in a situation where despite my input on the matter and knowing the person on trial is guilty was found not guilty by the jury would just drive me nuts. I do believe that some people have mental illnesses that cause them to murder and rape and I do believe they should be treated instead of put in prison. But overall I cant see myself taking a career dealing with Legal or Forensic Psychology.

For this week looking at Chapter 5 I was able to relate or find interest in 7 of the 14 categories. I find that interesting as I thought I would find more areas of interest in this field. The percentage for me in this category is 50%. Below are the six areas in which I was connected to or found interest in.

  1. I always found the criminal side of things fascinating. I could honestly see myself working in a prison working through prisoner’s issues but more importantly what makes them tick in their thought process. I truly enjoy puzzles and challenging myself with situations others find impossible. That being said I think my morals would get in the way too much to consider offenders having rights, or the fact that a crime is so horrible that mental illness could have caused it. That being said I understand that each background is unique and I know there are a lot of triggers that can effect someone’s thought process. The true challenge in my opinion that would allow me to get over these hurdles is by me putting my own feelings and thoughts aside. If I could do that I feel then I could truly help criminals in their wrong doings.

  1. Part One: I decided to choose my research topic in an area based off of my findings in the discussion thread. One of the areas or topics was do me “Think offenders have rights and should be treated justly and fairly.” From this I understand everyone should be treated fairly but it’s hard to justify that when someone commits a crime. This leads me to the research topic I discovered and found very interesting. The article is titled how should we decide whom to imprison? The use of risk assessment instruments in sentencing decisions. How do judges and police officials determine what is a just sentence and do we think that all people that break crimes should go into detainee centers? The main reason in why we put people behind bars is because they have displayed a certain act of violence and by containing them we can reduce possible future violence. It is cause of this that psychologists and scientists have been figuring ways to determine just punishment or possible incarceration depending on the people’s profile. It was rom this that they developed risk assessment instruments. It is these instruments that tell professionals which risk factors to consider in deciding how to supervise and treat people who have been charged with crimes.(Viljoen 2019) It is with these instruments that many feel may help divert people who aren’t dangerous but made a bad decision from prison. They would receive other types of punishment like heavier fines. This could intern reduce the amount of people incarceration and reduce tax payers dollars for running these facilities.
  2. I feel like after more research in this area we could help reduce or find a better way to handle some of the smaller crimes and reduce incarceration rates. Right now the United States has the highest and most elaborate prison system in the world. Some people feel that this is the reason why many criminals repeat crimes because life on the inside is better than life on the outside. What we thought was a punishment is in reality the type of life with a structure that they are looking for. If we could refine these risk management instruments and place counselors in the right area we could help some of these petty crime criminals find their true belonging by contributing to society instead of hindering it. The questions I had from this research is what are the types of questions do they ask in this risk assessment? Who determines what classifies certain risks? Finally would victims feel this is a good course of action for the perpetrator?

In my opinion, I believe teenagers should work because working sets the foundation for adulthood. Children need to be taught basic lessons about working such as if you do not work, you do not eat. Even for teenagers, some jobs require that the individual passes a drug test. Adolescent risk taking is widely recognized as a behavior by which teens assert their independence from the constraints of their childhood years. (Nichols & Good, 2004). Our youth must not give into peer pressure if they want to be successful in life. In some cases, drugs start to destroy their lives and they can never recover throughout life. The effects are not worth the risk. Approximately 9.5% of students have used some form of cocaine during their lifetime and 4% have used cocaine one or more times in the past 30 days. (Nichols & Good, 2004). In most households, working as a teenager is a trait is passed down from generation to generation because the parents had to work at a young age to ensure the family had enough food and necessities. In previous decades, this caused a lot of teenagers to drop out of school and not complete their education. Modern youth workers include male and female teens of all ages, from all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, still it is more common for some types of students to work than it is for others. (Nichols & Good, 2004). In my experiences, most of my friends in high school that were raised in wealthy families tended not to work because their parents brought them everything they ever wanted, but I believe, in most cases, this leads to teaching your child bad traits because they will feel that they can just ask mom and dad for money when they get into a bad situation even as adult. Nichols and Good (2004) shows that my opinion is false as most children from wealthy households worked than youth from lower income families.

According to Nichols and Good, during the era of the nineteenth century when the young people were first categorized and seen as “teenagers”, G. Stanley Hall was the first person to emphasize the concept of adolescent and also was the first to address this as “sturm und drang (or storm and stress) to explain the strangeness of youth (Nichols and Good, 2004). This was the first initial bad reputation of the youth going through adolescence, and it is where it began how society started to view the youth with fear and look at them as chaos, therefore devaluing them as a category. Nichols and Good declares that youth are devalued and mistreated in today’s society more so than before in history, it has gotten much worse overtime leading up to now.

Ultimately, people fear and devalue teenagers because of their “bad” reputation, more specifically bad behavior in which Nichols and Good mentions “is often viewed as inevitable and unchangeable” (Nichols and Good, 2004). Society has made it a point to categorize teens or the youth as a group deserving of fear from adults and elders and that they should also expect to be receive punishment for wrongdoings or wrongdoings they are YET to commit.

Nichols and Good argue that teenagers should be viewed as a “critical resource”; the percentage of children and young adults in the current and upcoming generations are decreasing, due to the decrease in birthrate and elderly are increasing in their percentage contribution to the American population. Due to this, “fewer Americans will be able to maintain the various roles required by a productive society” (Nichols and Good, 2004). I highly and strongly agree to Nichols and Good’s standpoint and argument in how we need to do better as a nation and society to see the value and erase the extreme bad reputation and belief about our teenagers or young people as our nation’s future securely depends on them and the impact they hold. Nichols and Good describes how important it is for society to start focusing on the education, wellbeing and the outlook of teenagers towards society as a whole given the heavy power that they hold for the future.
