Non-exchange revenues can be of four types.

The GASB has identified four classes of nonexchange revenues:

For each of the following revenue transactions affecting a city, identify the class in which the revenue falls and prepare an appropriate fund journal entry for the current year (2015) as necessary. Provide a brief explanation of, or justification for, your entry.

• 1. In December, the state in which the city is located announced that it would grant the city $20 million to bring certain public facilities into compliance with the state’s recently enacted disability/accessibility laws. As of year-end the city had not yet received the funds, and it had not yet expended any funds on the state-mandated facility improvements.
• 2. The city imposes a $100 tax on each sale of real estate. The tax is collected by the title companies that process the sales and must be forwarded to the city within 30 days of the transaction. In December there were 600 sales of real estate. As of year-end the city had collected $40,000 of the $60,000 that it was owed.
• 3. In December the state announced that the city’s share of state assistance for the calendar year 2016 would be $120 million.
• 4. The city imposes a tax on all boats owned by residents. The tax is equal to 1 percent of the assessed value of a boat (determined by the city, taking into account the boat’s original cost and age). The tax is payable on the last day of the year prior to the year for which the tax is applicable. In 2015 the city levied $640,000 of 2016 boat taxes, of which it collected $450,000.
• 5. A local resident sends to the city a copy of her will in which she bequeaths $3 million to the city museum upon her death.
• 6. The U.S. Department of Justice announces that it will reimburse the city up to $400,000 for the purchase of telecommunications equipment. As of year-end the city had incurred only $200,000 in allowable expenditures.
• 7. A resident donates $10 million in securities to the city to support a cultural center. Only the income from the securities, not the principal, can be spent.

Objective

Students (individually) must develop and submit an originally written paper in the style of a case study in social media marketing. The paper must be about a selected non-profit entity and contain a survey of in-depth research on an issue that is relevant to a main concept in this course.

The project will incorporate a specific issue concerning the development and implementation of a social media program as an application of the theory discussed in the reading and discussions. Collection of data and analysis are major features of these projects.

Instructions

• Select an overarching topic in this course where you think you have the most interest from the following list. Your writing will likely be more focused on a specific sub-topic within one of these main topics, but this list will help guide you in the beginning. Review samples of case analysis included in the Assignments/Project tab.
• Sign up for Case Study Final Project by the due date on the “Case Study Final Project: Topic Selection” discussion board by creating a thread with your topic in the subject line. The body of the message in the thread should include the main topic from the list above (or another approved topic) and the subtopic of interest.
  • For example, if student David Campbell would like to write a case study about the organization’s current social media efforts within the social publishing zone, he would go to the “Case Study Final Project: Topic Selection” discussion board and create a thread with the subject line ‘Social publishing zone’. In the body of the message to post, student David Campbell would write: David Campbell will write a case study about the social publishing zone topic. Specifically, the focus will be on the content characteristics (e.g. originality and impact of the contribution).
• Using netnography, research and write a case study. The case study should include brief background information and qualitative and/or quantitative data that is relevant to the assigned entity and topic. The bulk of the writing should profile a real issue within the context of your chosen topic from step 1. You will likely have to consult the organization staff, internal publications, official social media accounts, credible online source, and/or other reliable sources of information to compose your case study.
• Create three or more discussion questions at the end that allow the reader to reflect on the concepts in this course that are related to your topic. The discussion questions must encourage supported critical thinking based on the focal concept in your case.
• Submit your case study through Blackboard by the deadline.

For this project, your topic should come from Chapters 3-8. The following list is a suggestion for topics:

• segmentation, targeting, and positioning
• social identity and social media usage
• group influence in social media
• social community zone
• social publishing zone
• social entertainment
• social commerce

The instructor will respond to each post to state if the topic is approved or ask for additional information. No project submissions will be accepted before they are fully approved, so check back after posting to confirm that the project was approved.

Technical Specifications

Your assignment consists in conducting a social media marketing metrics matrix. The social media marketing metrics matrix illustrates the categories and characteristics of metrics applicable to social media actions, and it may include but not limited to activity (e.g. reach, content), interaction (e.g. engagement, customer emotional response) and performance (e.g. financial, customer behavioral response) metrics.

You have to conduct research of the brand performance and/or indicators in social media.

• First, select one mature brand with moderate to widespread activity on social media. Then select social media vehicles currently being used by the brand.
• Using a table, develop a social media marketing metrics matrix for your chosen brand. (As a guide to develop the matrix, review the materials on pages 299-301 from our textbook).
• Based on your answers, prepare a summary with recommendations for each one of the three categories of metrics (e.g. activity, interaction and performance).
