Cournoyer, B. (2014). The Social Work Skills Workbook. Belmont, CA: Brooks/Cole.
SBIRT Interventions

There are several purposes for this assignment:

The first purpose is to increase your knowledge about how to work in a culturally competent manner with children and families of underserved populations. The second purpose is to increase your critical thinking skills. The third purpose is to introduce you to some important scholarly journals in social work as well as the fields in which social work is commonly engaged.

Your paper should be 6 – 7 pages long, excluding the title and reference pages. Your paper must follow APA style. Be sure to use the APA tutorial in the course and your APA manual.

Your Tasks:
  • Describe a client population that you hope to work with in the field of social work that is an underserved population. Identify this population and explain why they are an underserved population.
  • Conduct a literature search to find articles about how social work serves or doesn’t adequately serve this underserved population. Choose five articles that discuss culturally competent practices for working with this population.

It is recommended that your research articles be recent, within the last ten years. You can use something that is more than 10 years old, if it is the seminal work but you need to make it clear that is why you are using it. For example we are using an article for this class about Genograms from the 1990s because it is the pinnacle of work with Genograms. The reason we want you to use articles less than 10 years old is because research and technology advances and changes. What worked 10 years ago might be disproven in today’s world.

  • Thoroughly describe the culturally competent social work practices for working with this population that are identified in the articles or are implied by the articles. Use this research and your course textbook to elaborate on these questions:
    • How has this group been treated historically in our culture? What is the history (e.g., laws, experiences, etc.) related to this type of oppression? What assumptions, beliefs, or attributions appear to drive the oppression or discrimination of this group?
    • What are examples of specific oppressive or discriminatory practices that this group has encountered as they interact with various institutions? You may include social, economic, educational, faith, and health care institutions in your discussion, as well as any other institutions of relevance.
    • What may be the outcomes or implications of these experiences for the marginalized group? Consider the range of bio-psycho-social-spiritual outcomes and other issues of relevance.
    • What examples of strength and resilience are, or have been, evident within members of this group?
    • What may be implications of these oppressive practices for social workers who work with individuals from this population? What are 2-3 specific understandings or actions that you see as crucial to supporting non-oppressive practices with the group you have chosen?
  • Identify a current SBIRT intervention(s) and provide a rationale/explanation about why this type of SBIRT intervention has been identified is appropriate given the particular cultural or ethnic characteristics of this population.
  • Reflect and write a few paragraphs on the knowledge and insight you gained from completing this assignment. Discuss how you feel, what you think, how you react to the notion of serving this minority population in the area of social work you identified in the paper. Be descriptive.

Remember, when writing your papers please adhere to the following expectations:

  1. Organization – Five sentence paragraph with an introduction, three supporting sentences, and a conclusion sentence. Think about this same organization for your whole paper: five paragraphs in this paper, one paragraph as an introduction, three supporting paragraphs, and then your conclusion paragraph. (Please note: This format is only a suggestion, you may need more paragraphs to reach the expected length of each paper).
  2. Don’t rely too heavily on quotes. Take several articles and point them together into a unique way. We want your thinking supported by research. An example of this is to remember to paraphrase the work that you are researching and make it your words but still cite the source. We want to see more of your words and less quotes. When using the TurnItIn program the similarity should be 20% or less.

Complete Discussion and Respond to 3 classmates, law homework help Business Finance Assignment Help

Give the pros and cons of the death penalty. Do some research and post an article or research on why or why not the death penalty is effective. Discuss with classmates or the Instructor points that are made.

Proponents of the death penalty say it is an important tool for preserving law and order, deters crime, and costs less than life imprisonment. They argue that retribution or “an eye for an eye” honors the victim, helps console grieving families, and ensures that the perpetrators of heinous crimes never have an opportunity to cause future tragedy.

Opponents of capital punishment say it has no deterrent effect on crime, wrongly gives governments the power to take human life, and perpetuates social injustices by disproportionately targeting people of color (racist) and people who cannot afford good attorneys (classist). They say lifetime jail sentences are a more severe and less expensive punishment than death.

Studies: Death Penalty Discourages Crime

What gets little notice, however, is a series of academic studies over the last half-dozen years that claim to settle a once hotly debated argument — whether the death penalty acts as a deterrent to murder. The analyses say yes. They count between three and 18 lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted killer. “Science does really draw a conclusion. It did. There is no question about it,” said Naci Mocan, an economics professor at the University of Colorado at Denver. “The conclusion is there is a deterrent effect.” A 2003 study he co-authored, and a 2006 study that re-examined the data, found that each execution results in five fewer homicides, and commuting a death sentence means five more homicides.

The cons of the death penalty majorly consist of the possibility of wrongful conviction. There are many cases where convicted offenders were exonerated from death row, whether DNA testing or other evidence. Although the offender is sometimes paid a monetary compensation for being wrongfully convicted and serving time, his/her emotional distress will affect them significantly. All of this proves that the justice system is not perfect and subject to mistakes.

The pros of the death penalty could involve relief, often considered justice, for the family of the victims. If indeed the offender committed the heinous crime, he/she will not be able to repeat the offense. Some offenders could be remorseful for their actions, while others could show no emotion at all, leading the court to consider their mental state.

Research (University of Colorado at Denver and Emory University) shows that the death penalty indeed acts a deterrent for murder (Washington Post, web). The statistics state that every execution prevents at least 18 murders. The death penalty has been around for a while and to misunderstand the consequence of murdering someone brings forth a heavy consequence. Capital punishment is effective and should continue to be reviewed on a case by case basis.

POST 3:

Perhaps one of the most controversial topics when it comes to corrections and sentencing of a court of law – the death penalty. The biggest con of the death penalty of course is the possibility of executing an individual who was actually innocent. It has happened, and is preventable. According to Amnesty International, since 1977 there have been 140 people released from death row due to evidence that proved their innocence of crimes they were convicted of. This of course poses the question of how many of the 1,200 executed during that time period could have been truly innocent, but a lack of evidence could not overturn their conviction. Others cons of the death penalty pertain to the fact of 14 states without it, have lower homicide rates, suggesting that it may not be a deterrent. Amnesty International also claims that it is racially biased, due to 77% of those who have been executed have been for killing white people even though African-Americans account for 50% of homicides. One of the pros for the death penalty that stood out to me was that by executing murderers, we are protecting everyone else from that person killing anyone again. Regardless of the morality, it is difficult to argue that statement. Another large pro for the death penalty is to simply provide justice, or an “eye for an eye” type of resolution. Those with this opinion seem to lean on the stigma that the justice system caters more to the perpetrator than to the victims or the families of victims of a crime. Overall, I am on the fence with the death penalty. I generally do not oppose in a clear cut case of someone’s guilt, but it is not sobering that new evidence can come to light even after the execution of someone. I believe in death for those who are deserving, but with no guarantee of guilt or innocence, due to our broken court system, it makes the decision very difficult.

Here is the link for Amnesty International. Very interesting statistics.

Income tax, tax return problem, accounting homework help Business Finance Assignment Help

Attached in Word is your tax return problem. I made it simpler than the one I used the last time I taught this course in that I removed a rental property that would have required the preparation of Schedule E and a depreciation schedule. I strongly urge you to use a software program to do this assignment. However, you may do it by hand as long as you use official IRS forms. Many basic tax software programs are available free or at little cost. You may be able to use the software of a friend. However, you must do your own work. This is not a group or team project. Submit your work here as a pdf file (I strongly prefer one file).
