Descriptive Writing and Grammar Review

Directions

  1. Read the “The Secret Power of Things We Hold Dear” (2007) by Sherry Turkle (search for this online or in the EBSCO database).
  2. Read Writing Elements: A Quick Guide to Grammar and Usage (2012) by Goss and Goss (find this in this week’s readings or in the Course Resources folder located under the Lessons tab).
  3. Read and respond to each of the following writing prompts. Submit them as a single document.

Part 1: Descriptive Writing

In her 2007 article, “The Secret Power of Things We Hold Dear,” Sherry Turkle discusses the importance of objects on a personal level. She describes her weekends spent at her grandparents’ apartment in Brooklyn, looking through the items that her grandparents saved, and using the information she gleaned from these items, gains a deeper understanding of her mother and her aunt. In her article, Turkle explains that the items that she looked at again and again “had a high emotional intensity” because they made her think about the father she never met (Turkle, 2007, para. 6). In this sense, Turkle uses the art of bricolage (“do-it-yourself”) to piece together who her father was.

For this writing assignment, use bricolage to describe a person close to you or someone you know very well: What objects surround this person? What does his or her physical space (living space, work space, or other) look like? How does he or she dress? Describe this person’s physical appearance as well as any mannerisms, gestures, or expressions he or she uses. Show this person doing something that he or she would do on a regular basis. The idea is to create a dominant impression of this person by selecting key details, as you did in your discussion this week.

Write a one-paragraph (five to seven sentences) physical description of this person and his or her surroundings using specific sensory details so the reader can visualize this person. Write a second paragraph discussing what you think these objects, environment, appearance, and so forth say about this person. Practice ways of showing your reader the significance rather than telling the reader of its importance.

Part 2: Grammar Review

In Writing Elements (2012), Goss and Goss briefly explore the most common grammar and usage issues found in student writing. Read through the guide and find three areas where you struggle or have struggled in your own writing. Write an example of each of these issues and demonstrate a way each issue can be corrected.

For example:

Verb Tense

“I asked her what is her problem.” Incorrect because it uses both past and present tense verbs in the same sentence. This is also an awkward sounding sentence.

“I asked her what her problem was.” Correct (past tense).

Or, “I ask her what her problem is.” Correct (present tense).

Emergency Planning: Hazard Mitigation Response Paper Science Assignment Help

Emergency Planning: Hazard Mitigation
Response Paper Instructions

Note: This is a two part assignment with
requested modifications after professor’s approval, comments and critiques. Price is for completion of both assignments.

Must us “Hazard Mitigation Template” for this assignment
(see attachment).

This assignment is intended to
grasp your insight into the numerous potential and man-made disasters for which
emergency planners must be prepared to deal. Emergency management is a quickly
evolving profession with many opportunities for individuals who wish to pursue
it as a career. This exercise will offer insights into the scope and
responsibilities of individuals in the profession.

You will be provided a “Hazard
Mitigation Template” (see above), from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management
Agency. You will be asked to complete the five exercises in the worksheet for
your community, or a community of your choice, as the focus for the mitigation
study. This exercise requires a deal of research and analysis on their part.
After doing the research required to complete each of the five sections of
the worksheet, you must also final report which thoroughly examines the risks,
preparedness, and response capabilities of the
community.

Assignment Part 1:  Due 10 March, you will develop an outline and a course
of action for the exercise.  After instructor approval and comments, then you
may continue with final report.

Assignment Part
2:
For the final report, due 25 March, you should also include suggestions on
how to mitigate the risks and improve response capabilities. You may also
include relevant charts, graphs, and other illustrations to support, supplement
and/or clarify.

Thorough data collection for this
exercise requires time. You should start data collection immediately in order to
have enough time to collect, synthesize and report on the
data.

Some possible resources for data
include:

  • Emergency management web sites of the community the students have selected.
  • Police and fire websites.
  • Their local emergency management department. Often communities of size have
an emergency management department. In smaller communities it is often the fire
chief who is the designated emergency manager.
  • The community’s Streets Department or Traffic Engineering Department.
  • Local utility companies.
  • Other internet sources.

Outside readings for this
project include:

  • The Hazard Mitigation Planning Template itself is a great source of
    information.
  • The Hazard Mitigation Planning Tools and Techniques Guide, (see attachment).
  • The community’s planning department.
  • The community’s budget department.

You must remember when doing the
exercise to also consider surrounding communities because their disasters can
also affect your community and become your responsibility. Consider industrial
manufacturing using toxic substances, military bases, large scale utility sites,
etc. that may be close by. This exercise is a chance for you to develop a
mitigation plan for the community you have chosen.

View this exercise as if you are
the newly appointed emergency manager of the community. Prepare a written report
to the governmental entity to which you are accountable, i.e. city council,
county board of supervisors, or other legislative bodies. Prepare a thorough
report to provide to them as part of your first meeting with this group. The
report should be thorough, professional, and audience appropriate. The report
can also include charts, graphs, and other illustrations for
clarification.

The final document must comply with

Business Research Methods, business and finance assignment help Business Finance Assignment Help

Final Project Requirements

The Final Project will consist of two parts.

Part One will involve critiquing research that has been performed by others. You will need to critically evaluate the researcher’s work by identifying strengths, weaknesses, areas to improve, and possible extensions of the research.
Pick and thoroughly read one of the following three articles. You will need to utilize your research skills by locating them using either the ERAU Library Database or the Internet.
 Weick, K.E. 1993. The collapse of sensemaking in organizations: The mann gulch disaster. Administrative Science Quarterly, 38: 628-652.
 Ashenfelter, O. and Kreuger, A. (1994) Estimates of the economic return to schooling from a new sample of twins. American Economic Review, 84(5), December, 1158-1173.
 Card, D., Krueger, A.B. (1994). Minimum wages and employment: a case study of the fast-food industry in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. American Economic Review, 84(4), 772-93.
Once you have read your article, you will write a critique. In your critique, discuss the following:
 Research methods used
 Why the authors selected the methods
 What other methods could have been used
 Why the other methods would have been applicable
In addition, discuss the primary results of the paper and how these results could be applied to a business application. Your paper must follow current APA standards and be no more than three pages in length, not including any appendices or attachments.

Part Two will involve developing a regression model for a topic of your choosing in an attempt to explain a phenomenon of interest. In doing so, you will be required to locate data on the Internet and do the appropriate analysis. You will also have to explain your topic of interest, the variables chosen, and why the variables were chosen, in addition to presenting and explaining your results. Your paper should include the following:
 Introduction – describe the phenomena you are attempting to model and its importance (2 – 3 paragraphs)
 Literature Review (find at least two references) – who has done similar work and what were their findings? (2 – 3 paragraphs)
 Data – summary statistics of the data (2 – 3 paragraphs)
 Methods and Results – what analysis did you perform and what were the expectations for the model? Were your results similar to those in the references you used? (3 – 6 paragraphs)
 Conclusions (2 – 3 paragraphs)
Your paper must follow current APA standards. Be sure to include tables as necessary and to label them properly (review the APA manual and the readings from Module 1).
Throughout the course there have been many topics related to analyzing data that you should consider including in your write-up such as a graph of the data. In the Appendix, you may want to include graphs used to evaluate normal distribution. A discussion of the results of such analysis should be included in the results section of the paper.
An example of a potential problem would be house values. Many counties have online tax records, which include detailed information about a house. Data may include square footage of a house, whether there is a fireplace, square footage of a deck, whether there is a basement, finished basement square footage, and lot size. Collecting the data would take a little work and would require determining how many houses you should collect data from to be able to develop a model. This topic is off limits but there are many topics available to you.

Note: I would like both part (Part I & Part II )to be each in a different file. Also the paper should be within the APA style with zero plagiarism.
