You can complete this assignment after reading Chapters 3 and 4 in your textbook and Writing Assignment 2 reading. The problem involves selecting a major vendor through comparative analysis.

Writing Requirements

This assignment is the first of four steps in completing the business memorandum. This assignment will require you to:

1. Solve a statistics problem – you will solve the statistics problem and include it in this assignment (in the appendix.) – You will use the calculations you complete to inform the recommendation you make for this problem.
2. Answer the problem questions included in the assignment template -through doing this you will articulate an understanding of the problem and what you are being asked to do with that problem, the value of the statistical calculation to addressing the problem, and who the audience you are asked to address is and how their role and status will influence what and how you write your memorandum.
3. Complete a draft of the memorandum – through doing this you will demonstrate an ability to understand and explain a statistical problem
   1. Using language appropriate to the professional status and background of the audience you are addressing.
   2. Presenting a detailed analysis for this audience to understand what you have done and have confidence in your recommendation.
   3. Present the memorandum such that elements flow (Links to an external site.) in a clear professional way.

To complete this assignment you will use:

• The Business Memorandum Template – open this template and complete the assignment in it
• The Business Memorandum Guide – this will provide guidance on the content of the memorandum
• The problem description below – this is the statistical problem you will address.

This assignment will be graded on completeness ONLY. However, it is the document on which you will get feedback from your classmates, so you should produce your best work, in order to get the best possible feedback. Problem Description

In this section, you will find a description of the problem, requested recommendation and audience for the final memorandum for this assignment. This problem will require you to write clearly about a particular part of a car. If you are not familiar with the workings of a car engine a simple google search for videos about the particular component of the motor you will be writing about will allow you to write about it accurately.

Description:

You are a line manager in Super Car Part’s Eversville manufacturing facility. The company produces automotive parts, and you have responsibility for the line producing steel shafts for the gearbox manufactured in the Eversville Plant. The acceptable dimension of the shaft is 2.5±0.05 inches in diameter with the most desirable product having a diameter of exactly 2.5 inches. The current equipment is approaching the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. Two vendors are trying to sell your company, Super Car Parts Incorporated, their machines for the shaft-machining task. You have been asked to assess the machines from each vendor, and to make a recommendation for a machine vendor supported by a justification for your decision.

You asked both vendors to supply data on the machining accuracy of their machines for the given task. Both vendors machined 100 shafts, collected data, plotted histograms, fitted the histograms with normal distributions and supplied you with their findings.

• Utilize plain language when describing your analysis, as you cannot assume all readers will be statistically literate. However, there are also some who will understand statistics and will want to understand the statistical logic that you used to determine your recommendation.
• Start the document with a summary that readers can read to understand the essential elements of the document – the context of the issue, what is being examined and how, and the recommendation you will make.
• Develop the document around a direct, coherent message (thesis), and clear evidence to support it.

For this assignment, you’ll find a piece of digital literature and complete the process of defending and analyzing its place beneath the literature umbrella. Entertaining adaptation of Homer’s epic poem that you may enjoy watching, directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. Originally a 1997 mini-series, here edited down to a 3-hour film. Not great art, but fairly faithful to the plot.

For extra credit, pick three scenes from the film (one from each hour, approximately beginning, middle, and end) and explain how they parallel and differ from Homer’s poem. This may be either plot or characterization: in other words, what’s similar and/or different about what happens or how people behave?

You’re advised to read the Mark Fiore summary first (long version, preferably) to give you a complete grounding in the poem before beginning your paper. 1000 words/3 pages, double-spaced. 12-pt. type. Submit through the EX CR essay portal under Assignments for an extra 10 points!

Examining how different cultures are incorporated into a single society can offer insight into the ethnic group relations of that society. There are different ways in which ethnic groups experience assimilation, depending on the ethnic group’s origins in society. Many ethnic groups immigrate to a new country—often fleeing conflict in their home country—to make a better life for themselves and their families. Many ethnic groups perceive the United States as a country with greater economic, political, and social opportunities, and therefore, many immigrate to the country. Conversely, other ethnic groups are considered native or indigenous to a country and contact other ethnic groups through colonization: for example, Native American tribes in North America under British colonization. In both cases, ethnic minorities are expected to assimilate to the culture and behaviors of the majority, dominant group.

In the Final Paper, you will investigate the connection between culture, assimilation, and ethnic relations in society. A spectrum of possibilities exists when considering the degree to which ethnic groups assimilate to mainstream society, from completely adopting the new culture to maintaining their own cultural traditions and differences. Meaningful cultural symbols, such as traditions surrounding food, cooking, and eating, play a role in how ethnic groups both assimilate to new cultural norms and maintain their own unique traditions. They also assist in measuring the degree to which assimilation has occurred.

In your paper, include the following sections/components:

Introduction (two to three pages): Define the concept of assimilation and explain what happens to an ethnic group’s culture when they follow a model of full assimilation, evaluate how the degree to which an ethnic group assimilates contributes to and reinforces existing ethnic hierarchies, and explain if mainstream society is more welcoming to newcomers if they assimilate or if they retain some of their own cultural customs.

Body (about four to five pages): Explain how assimilation differs for ethnic groups that immigrate to a new country versus indigenous ethnic groups and analyze how cultural symbols—such as food—play a role in assimilation. The body of your paper should address the following:

· In what ways are immigrant groups expected to assimilate to mainstream culture? Why is assimilation to mainstream culture encouraged? In other words, why are ethnic groups encouraged to adopt the culture of their new home rather than maintain their own cultural traditions?

· Describe how the United States government forced the assimilation of Native American children. What purpose did this forced assimilation serve and whom did it benefit? What might today resemble if Native Americans had not been forced to assimilate?

· Researchers often measure the degree to which an ethnic group has assimilated by looking at cultural practices: things like food, dress, and language. Explain, using the resources provided, the importance of food as a cultural symbol for ethnic groups. Why might an immigrant group resist adopting to the cultural food norms of the mainstream culture? What strategies do immigrant groups use to overcome this? What do the traditions surrounding food (e.g., who cooks it, how it is prepared and served, when and where it is eaten, etc.) reveal about an ethnic group’s culture? How can food, and the customs surrounding it, facilitate greater peace and understanding between ethnic groups?

Conclusion (two pages): Provide an example of your own ethnic or racial traditions surrounding food. Where did these traditions come from? How far removed are you from your ancestors who first immigrated to this country? If you were to move to a new country today, would you want to maintain these traditions or would you be willing to give them up to assimilate to the customs of your new home? What is another cultural symbol that an ethnic group may want to keep rather than assimilate into mainstream culture? To sum up the Final Paper, why are cultural symbols so important to ethnic groups?
