As a full-blown alcoholic, I made impulsive stupid decisions, but one thing I thought long and hard about (too long) was getting sober.
It was the realization that my grandmother died at the age of 45 and my mother had died at the age of 50- homeless and alone. That cold fate was also something I knew I did not want.
From my adolescence to my mid-twenties I spent too many days and sleepless nights worrying about my mother. Where was she? How was she doing? Did she get a bed at a homeless shelter? Who was she with? My family tried everything to get her help; therapy, institutions, rehab, finding her work, a place to stay but in the end, nothing worked. I would search for her around town, bring her money, food, and medical supplies- only to find out that it kept getting stolen or she was sharing with everyone else. It was very frustrating. It took many years for me to accept the fact that this is where she will end up at the end of her days. And then one day, I received a phone call that launched my drinking career. My mother had passed away.
You would think I was smarter than that, but guilt and grief are also a hell of a drug. I masked my pain and went on for years before I realized I was walking a fine line.
After I fully committed to being sober, I knew I needed to find something that would help me commit to living a healthy lifestyle. A friend of mine asked me to join her fitness accountability group and I figured, “What the Hell, I’ll give it a shot”. It turns out it that it was more than a Fitness Group. It was a lifestyle change. I HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK. I now love my healthy lifestyle. I love my marriage. I love my friends and the new friends I’ve made.
