Week Five Reading Reflection Instructions

Write about one (and ONLY One) of the following week five texts to complete this assignment:

Whyte – The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crisis

Karmapa – The Heart is Noble

Macy – Greening of the Self

Kraft – Nuclear Ecology and Engage Buddhism

In many college courses you are asked to memorize facts and key statements, and by now you can do this with relative ease. But in courses that also require close, critical reading, you are asked to go a step further. In order to demonstrate that you have assimilated the central argument of a reading, you must be able to restate the writer’s central ideas in your own words. A précis, the assignment for this week, should include your voice explaining the reading, not the author’s voice. The goal is to communicate the core essence of the work in a manner that is both clear and concise, and only once you have done that, to express your own ideas about the work. What you think of the reading must be clearly distinguishable from what you are saying the author thinks.

For this assignment, select one of the above readings and analyze it in terms of the author’s (s’) discussion of environmental ethics. Do not attempt to summarize every argument made in the article; focus on arguments regarding environmental ethics specifically.

This kind of writing is not as easy as it looks, but if you complete it well you will never forget the argument, the examples, and the development of the reading. More than likely you will also find that, when you write research papers and other critical papers, your ability to write a good précis is central to the basics of analysis, synthesis, comparison, and other key, higher order thinking skills absolutely required for your success in college and in the profession or career you have chosen when you graduate. In addition to its value as a writing exercise, writing a précis is excellent reading practice—in order to say another person’s ideas in your own words, you must understand the ideas thoroughly.

How to proceed:

  1. Read the article or chapter carefully. Try to grasp the writer’s main point. Spotting topic sentences will help (it can be helpful to skim for sentences like “this article will show that…” or “this book disagrees with… and will argue that…”). Often, an author will make many small arguments to support a big one—learn to tell the difference. What is the author’s big argument? Look up in the dictionary any words whose meaning is not clear. As you read, take brief notes to be used in your writing.

2. When you have finally decided what the author’s main point is, write the first paragraph of the précis.

3. After the first paragraph, write another paragraph summarizing other important parts of the article or chapter. Do not use the wording of the original unless you find certain key words indispensable. If you cannot translate the ideas into language of your own, you do not understand them very well.

4. Finally, now that you have analyzed the text objectively, what is your evaluative, critical response? Here is the fun part: What do you think about the text, its claim, its support? Are these tenable? Why or why not? Does the author provide enough support? Is the support logical? Is it clear? Does it make sense? How does it connect to, rub up against, resonate with, answer or disagree with, other similar texts that you’ve read? And, most of all, in your view does it accomplish the purpose it set out to accomplish? Why or why not, specifically? Where is it lagging? Where does it excel? Etc. This portion of your response should be at least two paragraphs in length.

Your précis should be about 4-6 paragraphs, or about 600-700 words. Assignments less than 600 words or more than 700 words will not be accepted. The intent is to give you practice writing carefully and concisely – word “spewing” is not helpful to you or to your reader.

Some tips:
In your own words, state the author’s thesis, main arguments and conclusions (as related to environmental ethics specifically). Get to the “heart” of the reading—omit repetition and only use examples that are necessary. Write in your own voice. I should “hear” your voice, not the author’s.

Avoid the temptation to lift long phrases and whole sentences from the original. One way to start writing in your own voice is to substitute your own synonyms for the author’s more important terms (but these synonyms should be accurate both in denotative and connotative meaning).

Write from your point of view, not that of the author whose work is being summarized. It can be helpful to begin with such expressions as “This author says” or “The paragraph means.”

Give a brief description of key terms and concepts as necessary.

Proofread! Read your work to yourself out loud. Does it make sense? Is it free of spelling and grammar mistakes? (use spell check and grammar check, but don’t depend on them to catch all mistakes). When finished, the précis should clearly state: This is what was studied (argued, discussed). This is how it was done (this was the focus). This is what was learned. This is what it means (why it is important).

This assignment was adapted from Dr. Toby Veeder and University of Oregon Professor Dan Buck and was earlier adapted by Professor Buck from Tracy Duckart’s Instructional Website at Humboldt State University and Valerie Stevenson.

Personal Marketing Plan Writing Assignment Help

Personal Marketing Plan

This assignment consists of applying marketing strategy to yourself and your pursuit of a career. This individual project assignment is intended to accomplish two objectives:

  1. To give you the opportunity to learn more about marketing plans and how they are constructed by developing a real plan to market a real product (yourself!)
  2. To encourage you to begin to focus upon your career planning efforts.

This require research – not just your own interpretation of the field you’d like to enter. As withall business communication, grammar and formatting is critical. Use headers to separate your items and make them easy to read and easy to identify. Be professional, not conversational, in your writing. As this is a business assignment, please make sure to take pride in the appearance of your finished product.

Although it is for a business, Appendix B in your book is a great sample of a personal marketing plan.

You should following this outline:

  1. Introduction – This section consists of brief introductory statements about what will follow in your report, its importance to you, and how it will be used to guide your career. It should also introduce you – who you are, what you do. The introduction serves to orient the reader regarding the importance you place on this exercise, and how the report is organized.
  2. Situation Analysis – This section focuses on where you are at this point of your life, and helps you identify your distinctive competencies.Significant Life Events: Everyone’s life has had its ups and downs, that is, significant

events about which you have positive or negative feelings. Please briefly describe the threemost significant events of your life, and indicate how these events have shaped your goals, abilities, and attitudes toward your potential contribution(s) to society. For instance, you may have demonstrated persistence, worked hard, or used good human relations skills in overcoming a negative event. These traits may have given you some degree of confidence that hard work and persistence pays off in the long run.

Each of these should be in a separate paragraph with explanation as detailed above.

Accomplishments: Identify the three most significant accomplishments you have achieved during your college days. These can include academic, service, and sports

achievements. For each accomplishment, identify the area, your objective, the difficulties you overcame, the qualities and abilities you demonstrated to overcome the difficulties, and results. Naturally, the qualities and abilities you list here may duplicate some of the traits you identified in the previous section.

Each of these should be in a separate paragraph with explanation as detailed above.

Disappointments: Identify at least one failing during your college career, and describe what that situation taught you about the limits to your capabilities.

Interest Inventory: Identify the six interests that you care about most, and threeactivities that you care about least from the following list.

planning leading observing performing maintaining

SWOT Analysis

creating analyzing constructing speaking innovating

training counseling writing operating selling

organizing managing installing exploring finance

designing mediating problem solving administrating persuading

artistic activity

Strengths: As a result of the preceding exercises (significant life events, accomplishments, disappointments, and interest inventory), you should feel relatively comfortable that you know your key strengths and weaknesses. In this section, summarize (don’t simply list!) the key findings of the preceding analysis by identifying your ten most important strengths. These are the qualities upon which you will build a successful career.

Weaknesses: Summarize (don’t just list!) the limits to your interests and abilities. These are the areas (more than one!!) in which you will either want to take steps to improve your performance or avoid by selecting jobs that do not require skills in these areas.

Opportunities: In order to complete this next step, you will need to have a college major in mind. (If you are currently undecided, select any one of the majors you are currently considering.) Identify three trends that will positively affect the need for persons with college degrees in your major over the next five years. Specify the kinds of jobs, the industries, or the companies that will be increasing their hiring as a result. Cite your sources.

Threats: Identify at least one trend that will negatively affect the need for college graduates in your specialty over the next five years. Specify the kinds of entry-level jobs, the industries, or the companies that will be decreasing their hiring as a result.

Now write a summary paragraph about your SWOT analysis in which you summarize whatyou’ve done and reiterate the significance of what you’ve concluded.

  1. Objective – In this section, take a long term perspective on your career. Describe the ideal job position for you ten years after graduation. Identify the ideal industry you would be working in, the region of the country (or world) where you will work, the name of the industry, the name of an ideal employer, your title, your job duties, and your annual income. Write a paragraph describing what accomplishments you would like to be known for in this ideal job. This is your long-term career objective.
  2. Target Market – Now take a short term perspective, focusing upon the first job you will hold after completion of schooling. This job will be an entry-level opportunity in which you will establish a reputation for success and accomplishments. It will lead to future advancement, and ultimately to your career objective. Identify the top three industries in which you would like to work and explain why. Pick one of these industries, and name at least three employers in this industry (both name of company and address) with whom you would consider working. Provide a rationale for this selection – why did you choose each of the industries? Why did you pick the industry you chose to concentrate on? Why did you select the three employers you did?Now identify three possible entry-level positions that each of these employers have (each position must be present at all three employers) and in which you have an interest. Now, create a 3 X 3 market segmentation grid by listing employers vertically and positions horizontally. Rate each employer-position on criteria of your choosing – be sure to state what your criteria are and detail the range and what the numbers mean. An examplemight be “proximity” where 1-2 means over 150 miles away, 3-4 means 100 miles away, etc. Define these so that I know if closer is better, etc.Select the best employer-position to serve as your “target market.”

Staff Accountant BMW 10

9 9

PWC 7 6 8

My criteria for ranking include taking a look at the level of contentment of current employees in that position (GlassDoor.com), starting salary, proximity to home and ability for promotion.

Which job did you choose and why? Now provide a complete description of the employer’sneeds for this position. Include in your description a list of the skills and interests they will

require (Career Services and the Library can help answer this question.) Compare these to the skills and interests you developed in the situation analysis section.

5. Positioning Statement – Now develop a positioning statement for yourself (the product) in the following form:

“To ____________________(company name), ____________________ (your name) is thecandidate for ____________________(position) who offers____________________, ____________________, and ____________________ (list up to five distinctive skills or competencies from your SWOT analysis.)

For each of the distinctive skills or competencies you list, write a short paragraph which provides descriptive support and demonstrates why you believe you possess that competency.

6. Marketing Mix – This section of your plan shows how you will use the 4 P’s to marketyourself for the ENTRY LEVEL POSITION.

PRODUCT: Use this section to identify what refinements or embellishments you will need tomake in the “product” (that’s you) so that you meet the needs of the target market. Include the skills you need to improve upon, and how you intend to do so (take a specific elective course, attend a Career Services seminar, go to grad school, assume a leadership position in a school organization, take a specific internship, get a supporting summer experience, improve your GPA, buy a suit, etc.).

PRICE: What are your expected salary and benefits? Look up current information on starting salaries for the job position you have targeted. Cite a reference for your information. Identify what you believe is a fair starting salary (for you) given your distinctive competencies and track record.

PLACE: Identify how you intend to make contact with the target employer (cold call, network contact, want ad reply, etc.). Identify the name, address, and phone number of the individual who will make the hiring decision. Identify the names and locations of other people who can provide you with insight about this individual and the specific needs of the job or company. Determine when, where, and how you will contact these people for advice.

PROMOTION: Include your resume and cover letter. It’s best to upload these as separatedocuments – you should be able to upload three docs inside the assignment. Your cover letter should be specific to the job you identified above. Use correct form (address blocks, etc.) for both the letter as well as the resume.

Also discuss how you will handle an interview, as well as other promotional and job search activities you will engage in.

  1. Action Plan – Compile a list of all the actions you will need to do to implement your plan. Arrange them in chronological order and indicate when you will do them, including specific target dates. Include all the actions that you plan to do for developmental reasons, too.
  2. References – This section should include all the information sources you used, including any interview(s) you conducted to gather information. You should use at least five references. References should be MLA or APA formatted.

This project will require effort, reflection, and creativity on your part and only you can develop that marketing plan that will help you be successful in your career. For example, I cannot tell you what company you should work for or how you should position yourself.

Students must submit their Personal Marketing Plan assignment through SafeAssign via Blackboard.

You are the manager for a Pizza restaurant. Currently, your restaurant pre-makes pizzas that are ordered the most to increase the number of pizzas being made on time for your customers. Over time, many customers have complained that their pizzas were cold upon delivery and not fresh, requesting refunds or remakes of their pizza. Your location is losing money from these wasteful practices, therefore, you want to create a Kanban based on the following basic principles:

1. A later process tells an earlier process when new items are required. This means that unless a customer orders a pizza, no pizzas will be made. Pull!

2. The earlier process produces what the later process needs.

3. No Items can be made without a Kanban card (order request). This allows the process to be transparent so everyone knows what is going on.

4. Defects are not passed on to the next stage.

Create a Kanban board for your pizza company that delivers. You must have 4-6 columns with headings for each. Decide what your Kanban cards will represent. Set Rules for your Kanban. Examples; criteria to move between columns? How to flag issues?

A few strategies for success

1. Normalize the size of incoming work by breaking up big orders into smaller ones.

2. Set each Kanban card to represent 1 pizza as opposed to 1 order. For example, one order may represent 2 large pizzas for one family or 20 large pizzas for a party.

3. Support multiple types of Kanban. For example a Red Kanban can represent a type of pizza or perhaps a size of pizza.

Creative Project Assignment

In English classes we tend to focus on analysis and argumentation through papers and exams; however, there are many other ways a person can respond to and interpret a text. This creative project is your chance to explore a different mode of interpretation by imagining yourself as an author, by imagining yourself as a book publicist, or by imagining yourself as an illustrator.

Creative Writing

If you choose this option, you will write an original short story related to the theme of growing up or developing personal identity using one of the techniques we’ve observed in our books this semester. Those include:

  • A journey to significant places (including a map of the journey)
  • Short but vivid descriptions of people and everyday events in a neighborhood
  • A comic strip that combines images and text to tell a story
  • Fantasy or supernatural elements combined with daily life
  • Two main characters telling a story in alternating first-person voices
  • Letters back and forth between two characters

Your creative writing should be 3 pages long double spaced (or 3 pages of comic strip). It can be fiction or based on real life (yours or someone you know – with names changed if you want).

You must also include a one paragraph reflection at the end that discusses which technique you picked from the list, why you picked it, and why you think it is or is not effective in telling a story now that you’ve tried it yourself. Talk about how doing this creative writing helped you learn or understand something more about a book/theme from this class.

project time, scope and time management Business Finance Assignment Help

Your company, IRTC Manufacturing Enterprises, is upgrading its legacy billing system. The system was installed originally ten years ago, and has been upgraded according to the vendor’s schedule, each one taking 9-12 weeks in duration with a team of 2 full time employees (FTE’s).

IRTC will be doing a major upgrade for the new web-based version of the system, in addition to the mainframe legacy system update. It is anticipated that this upgrade will take 16-20 weeks in duration; however, everyone has agreed that a more formal scheduling process should be completed which may change the duration estimate. The project will involve significant changes to existing business processes, changes to existing jobs, as well as the creation of several new positions. Customers will be able to view and pay their bills on-line, accessing a billing customer service agent when needed. This change, which will affect both the billing and customer service departments, is expected to reduce costs, improve customer satisfaction, and reduce the number of days for outstanding accounts receivable. The existing customer service staff has some proficiency with web applications, but the billing staff does not.

To date, the Billing Department has owned the applications, and the director of the department has been the sponsor for all upgrade projects. For this upgrade, however, the chief operations officer has indicated that the Customer Service Department also needs to play a major role. It will be up to you to determine the project sponsor and steering committee structure and participants. You will do this during the initiation phase.

You have been chosen to be the project manager; you will be on the project 30 hours a week and your rate is $125 per hour. You have significant experience with the system and have managed previous upgrade projects. You have acted as a business analyst, developer, and tester for projects on this package in the past. You will select your team, which will consist of several IT staff, supplemented by staff from the vendor. You have been told you can have up to 2.5 IRTC FTEs, in addition to yourself, for the duration of the project. (The list of available people is described in the Phase Two task.)

The vendor’s role is to be determined by you; their consultants cost $140 an hour for business analysts, $120 an hour for technical architects, $100 an hour for programmers or testers, and $90 an hour for instructional designers, trainers, or technical writers. You have a budget of $100,000 for vendor resources. You may supplement your team with vendors based on the holes in your IRTC team. For example, you may choose to have the vendor provide programmers if you choose not to have any of the internal staff provide programming resources, if your budget permits.

You will follow your organization’s standard methodology for a package upgrade. Part of that process includes the development and delivery of documentation and training materials–a responsibility generally filled by the IRTC IT training group. You have access to .5 FTE for the duration of the project to develop and deliver the materials. The person with the most experience on the package and current training/documentation will be unavailable to the project due to other projects; however, the vendor has adequate materials that can be purchased for an additional $6,500. You will need to determine the training needs, analyze the costs associated with each option, and determine the project’s scope.

With this version, the vendor also has another software add-on that supports the integration of your existing customer service system with the billing system’s customer service functions. There is not a decision yet as to which customer service system will be used, whether or not they will be integrated, and the extent to which customer databases will be integrated (if at all). According to the vendor, the installation of the add-on will cost $25,000 and take an additional four weeks.

At times, a project manager must evaluate proposals from identified vendors and make decisions based on the project budget and schedule. It is essential to determine how the organization will determine the best response to the proposal’s individual vendors?

IRTC has asked you to evaluate the customer service add-on the vendor offered while still in negotiations for this project. The add-on will cost $25,000 and take an additional 4 weeks to install. Your manager has asked for your opinion. The project is tracking along according to schedule and budget.

What do you need to consider before saying yes or no? Prepare a memo for your manager outlining how either decision would affect the project and factors that need to be discussed and agreed to by various stakeholders involved in the project.

Assignment Guidelines:

  • In 1,350 words, address the following:
    • What do you need to consider before accepting or denying the vendor proposal? Explain.
    • How would your decision affect the overall project?
      • Consider budget, schedule, and resources.
    • What stakeholders would need to be involved in this decision-making process? Why?
    • What important factors would need to be discussed and agreed upon by the various stakeholders involved in the project? Explain.

write an interview essay Writing Assignment Help

Paper #2

One way in which researchers gain information about a topic is to conduct interviews. People are usually willing to talk about their lives if they feel that the researcher will treat their information confidentially and ethically. Their comments can be a rich source of information about human development. You will be conducting two semi-structured interviews on the same topic to learn more about the selected topic and the process of data collection/analysis. Please review the potential topics and the associated questions listed below. Select only one topic. You will conduct two interviews (same topic), and use the information to write your paper. The specific requirements for the paper are outlined in the rubric. No interviewee names will be included in the papers.

Potential Topics

In what ways do you feel you have gained independence from your parents? What responsibilities go along with being independent? In what ways do your peers have more influence on your ideas, and in what ways do your parents have more influence? Do you feel that there is a generation gap between your parents and yourself? Have you thought of ways to reduce any differences while still developing your independence?

Drug Use and Health

Do you smoke? Do you drink alcohol? Do you use other drugs? Why or why not? If so, how much? Would you like to quit? Why or why not? Do you think much about the health hazards? What drug habits do people you know engage in? What are the reasons? What have been the results? What healthy activities do you engage in on a regular basis?

Moral Reasoning

What are the moral issues in your life today? How are you resolving them? How would you approach a moral dilemma, such as finding out that a good friend cheated on an important exam? Do you have a trusted person with whom you discuss moral issues? Who is it? What are the important moral issues facing our country?

Decision Making

What major decisions have you had to make in the past few years? How did you select your career or academic goals? What resources did you consult in making your decisions? In retrospect, did you make the right decisions? What would you change? What decisions are you facing now? Has your approach to decision making changed in the past few years?

  • Select a topic of interest (category) from the list.
  • Read the information about this topic in the textbook.
  • Select two people and ask if they would be willing to honestly discuss the category you have selected. Not all individuals will feel comfortable discussing all topics (categories). If one individual does not want to discuss your topic, ask another individual.
  • Explain that you are working on a project for your class and that all information will be confidential. Do not use names in your paper, and do not disclose information shared with others.
  • Begin the interview by telling the subject that you will be asking some questions, but he or she should feel free to expand on the topic or talk about related ideas. Set a definite schedule for the interview (30 minutes) and stay on that schedule. Take thorough notes.
  • If a subject’s answers are too brief or uninformative, follow up with questions like, “Why did you choose X?” or “Why do you think X happened?” If something the subject says seems important, follow up with additional probing questions, like “Tell me more about X.”
  • Remember, you are interested in your subject’s life and ideas. Do not involve yourself in a conversation, offer advice, or talk about your own experiences during the interview, except as a way of encouraging your interviewee to talk.

Character Analysis: Analyze one character in Fun Home and make an argument about what the character represents in the play’s greater meaning. Writing Assignment Help

A character analysis is more than a character description. It considers a complex character’s motivations and how conflicts arise from those sometimes-conflicting motivations, and it also analyzes how a character’s personality and growth (or lack) help convey the ideas and themes of the work as a whole.

  • Essay should be 1000-1250 words (approx 4-5 pages) – include the word count at the end of your essay – and written in MLA format, with a Works Cited page. See MLA info at: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ . (Links to an external site.)
  • You are not required to use sources, but any sources used must be documented.
  • Remember this is a character analysis so use the literary terms in your analysis and not just your own personal adjectives about the character.
  • always use specific passages to support your discussion since doing so offers more opportunity for close analysis.

Critical thinking Writing Assignment Help

Read the following passage, and then evaluate what is being claimed using the “SEARCH” method. You should consider at least a few different possible hypotheses in the process. Be sure to have a clear conclusion – which hypothesis is the most reasonable or likely to be true? If you rely on any material from outside sources, you must cite your sources.

You’re sitting at your computer late at night—only the dim glow of your screen lights the room. Your cat is happily sitting on the small table beside your desk. It’s quiet, you’re comfortable, and lost in your work. Suddenly, your work is disturbed as you spy a black figure racing at the edge of your vision. You jump and look around. Nothing is there.

How many times has this happened to you? If you’re honest with yourself, I’m sure you’ll answer that it’s happened more times than you can count. Generally, you would laugh it off as a bit of paranoia or perhaps you were tired. If you’re part of a growing group of people, you might claim it was the Shadow People.

Who are the Shadow People? Not much is known at this time. Maybe it is indeed our imagination or mythology gone astray. Maybe we’re all seeing exactly what we think we’re seeing—creatures moving through the shadows. I’ve heard numerous stories and claims about the true identity of the Shadow People. Are they ghosts? Aliens? Extradimensionals?
