Part A – Discussion Part

Talk to three people about the meanings of “minority” and “immigration.” Ask them, “When
you hear the word minority, what immediately comes to mind?” “When you hear the word
immigration, what immediately comes to mind?” What images do these words conjure in their
minds? Where have they seen these images? What are their thoughts about immigration?

Part B

In 3-4 double-spaced pages with 1-inch margins, 1) describe who you talked to (no names, use
friend, co-worker, mother, cousin, partner, etc.) and a little about their background (if you know
anything), then summarize your conversation with each person (at least one page), 2) compare
your interviews to those of other students in your discussion group. Specifically, were your
interview responses similar or different than your peers? Give specific examples from two of
your peers’ interviews, which means talk about one interview that each of your two peers
conducted (about 3/4 to 1 page), and 3) using your interviews, your peers’ interviews and one
reading from week 5, discuss what you learned about perceptions of “minority” and

Part 3: Personal Reflection

OBSERVATION INSTRUCTIONS

For each observation you participate in, you will complete an Observation Worksheet. This worksheet is divided into three parts. The following instructions will guide you through the assignment.

Part 1: Running Record of One Child

As part of your observation, you will complete a Running Record. This type of documentation, of your observation, involves recording a detailed description of events or behaviors in a real-time sequence.

Choose a child on which to focus.

Observe that child for 30 minutes.

As you observe, write down everything that happens with regard to this child and his/her interactions with others and the environment. Be as objective, and as detailed, as possible. In order to record as much as possible about what is happening, you will need to use “Quick Notes” (i.e., personal shorthand). Some people prefer to take notes by hand, some prefer to use laptops. If you take notes by hand, be sure to have a good supply of paper with you.

At the end of the 30-minute observation period, take time to write out your “Quick Notes” in full sentences. (Note: Writing out your observation notes, immediately after you finish your note taking, will help you retain more information in your “Write-Up.”)

Review your “Write-Up” and ask yourself if your observation revealed any overlap between developmental domains (e.g., interactions between biosocial and cognitive domains). At the end of your Running Record of One Child, briefly describe which developmental domains, if any, overlapped and how this overlap manifested itself.

Note: Record both your “Quick Notes,” your complete “Write Up,” as well as an example of the interplay between developmental domains on your Observation Worksheet.

Part 2: Running Record of One Area of Development

For this part of the assignment, you will observe all children but focus on only one area of development, such as those you pinpointed for your Child Development Chart (e.g., the use of tools or objects, verbal communication, or social interactions between children).

Select the area of development on which you will focus.

Observe all children for approximately 30 minutes.

Every time you observe this area of development, write down everything that you observe—as it happens. Be as objective, and as detailed, as possible. In order to record as much as possible about what is happening, you will again use “Quick Notes” (i.e., personal shorthand).

At the end of the 30-minute observation period, write out your observation notes in full sentences.

Part 3: Personal Reflection

The purpose of this segment is to analyze your observation experience from a personal point of view. This portion of your assignment should be 1- to 2-pages in length. Use APA format. See the last bullet: You need to cite your sources as in-text citations in APA format, and you need a reference list at the end of your document. When you do the Personal Reflection for Part 3, you could type directly in the square or you could type below the square. You are only allowed one submission in Turnitin—so you must do all of the work as one submission.

It is easier to do the Reflection if you type under the square–because APA format is required. Use the following questions to guide your thinking.

What were some of your expectations prior to beginning your assignment?

In what ways does your actual observation experience compare to your expectations?

How are you adjusting to your role as observer?

Were there times when it was difficult for you to remain objective?

A good competitive analysis is a scouting report of the actual market terrain the industry itself must navigate in order to be successful. Competitive analysis is a tool utilized in the strategic planning process to:

• Help management understand their competitive advantages/disadvantages relative to competitors

• Generate understanding of competitors’ past, present (and most importantly) future strategies

• Provide an informed basis to develop strategies to achieve competitive advantage in the future

• Forecast the returns that may be made from future investments

You may want to select your MAP industry or area of interest for this assignment but it is not required if you are still developing the focus of your MAP. Then prepare a competitive analysis of three of the largest competitors in the industry you are analyzing (or those that are of interest to you).Thoroughly research these competitors within the industry representing the following topics:

1. Executive summary – High-level overview of the paper; this would be read by a busy executive to determine interest in the report and its findings. (One-page).
2. Industry overview and description – Financial data, revenue size, number of competitors, industry leaders, etc. (Provide key industry stats based on IBIS or Hoover’s information (other sources are available as well). This can be a chart.
3. Factors which drive this industry in regards to growth and innovation –Environmental Scan, social, legal, regulatory, demographic, etc. Also provide a SWOT of the three competitors in grid format. Consider how you would relate Blue Ocean Strategy to the three competitors and include an analysis utilizing Porter’s Five Forces.
4. Analysis of top three competitors – Company financial data, major lines of business and potential divisions of interest, positioning, market share, branding, target market, company overview, products, revenue, HQ, employees, positioning, financial overview, points of differentiation, critical success factors, etc. This can be done as a grid if appropriate in total or in sections. Summarize section by answering the following questions:
   • How do the companies stand up to the competition?
   • What are the competitive edges of each?
   • What does each do better than its competition?
   • Where might each competitor be vulnerable?
   • What is the major watch out for each competitor?
   • How so, if not – what are the vulnerabilities?
   • What are the market strategies utilized by each to achieve their objectives?
5. Industry Future (this is your higher level analysis of the ‘industry facts’). What factors will impact the success or decline of this industry over the next three years? Where do you see the competitors in three years and how will the industry itself change? What recommendations would you have for each competitor based on what you have researched? This section should demonstrate how well you have synthesized the information and your analysis. This section should be two pages in length and supported by your research.
6. Conclusion – your final thoughts on this industry. Would you recommend it as an industry to invest over the next three years? (Section 5 & 6 needs to be at least two pages – three pages with support).

This paper requires solid research using credible secondary sources citing 5 – 8 credible references sources including IBIS. The annual reports and web pages of the specific competitors should be used for foundational information but present a potential biased perspective of the company. Therefore, they should not be used for support throughout the paper itself. The final paper should be approximately eight to ten pages plus references and exhibits. Paper MUST be in APA format with a Cover page, Table of Contents, Reference page and any applicable appendices. NOTE: Section 5 and Section 6 should represent a robust analysis from your background related to the stats in Sections 1-2-3-4. This is where you really drill into the analysis!
