Three factors known to promote resiliency in children
include: Temperament, close relationship with a family member, and a close
relationship with someone beyond their family. If the child has a temperament
that is relaxed and self-confident, they can better respond to bad situations
and circumstances (Bukatko, 2008).
I believe that Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems
Theory best explains Sam’s failure to be resilient. At the core of the
ecological system, the Microsystem, is Sam’s temperament. Clearly he does not
have a relaxed and self-confident temperament, which is why he is unable to
bounce back quickly after failures. Sam’s Mesosystem, his mother and five younger
brothers, appear to be fine with allowing Sam to come home each time he fails
thus allowing Sam to continue running away from his failures instead of
learning how to deal with them head on. Assuming Sam lives in the US, it is
also very common for 20 year olds to live at home whereas it wouldn’t be so
normal in other cultures. Bronfenbrenner includes how the attitudes and values
of the culture reflect on behavior by talking about the Macrosystem. If it were
not socially acceptable by the US culture for Sam to be living at home, he
would probably find other ways to continue supporting himself instead of
running away. Nature and Nurture both have equal impact on Sam. Nature is
genetic and is what controls Sam’s temperament and therefore his resiliency.
Nuture is how the environment has affected him, such as his Mesosystem and
Macrosystem that allow him to continue to run away from his failures
(Bukatko, 2008).

I think that over all for Sam it was more than likely
a combination of both. Because he isn’t were he should be intellectually he has
to work that much harder than others his age. However at the same time his
mother continues to allow him to come home every time something happens no
matter how big or small it is which will only continue the cycle of behavior.
There needs to be a time when both she and Sam need to come to the realization
that things need to change and that Sam needs to get some help with his depression
so that he can move beyond his current path.
