Self–care reflections….. consider your response to the Self–Care Discussion that you completed already and go into greater depth, writing 2–4+ paragraphs (250–400+ words) considering:•To date, what has self–care meant to you? The prenatal period and early years of life are crucial determinants of later cognitive and physical abilities, morbidity, mortality, mental health, and social abilities. There are multiple dimensions that influence the eventual outcomes of an individual’s overall health and well-being.

Questions to consider when reading the article:

• What problem was this intervention designed to address?
• What methods did they use to reduce the frequency, duration or severity of problem? (See Table 1)
• How did the program respond to the cultural needs of this population?
• What barriers were experienced? How did they overcome those barriers? (See Table 4)
• What were effective parts of the program? What was most interesting?

POST:

• Identify a problem in your community.
• Risk Factors: What are some of issues that contribute to this issue (e.g., what are some risk factors, what resources are lacking)?
• Protective factors: What are existing strengths and resources in the community that you might draw on (can be people, practices, beliefs, organizations)? What cultural factors should be incorporated for this program?
• Intervention: Apply the model described in the article (five components of collective efficacy; put them in your own words by pretending you are explaining each one to a friend). How can you leverage these components to influence community change to address the problem you identified?
