Book: Women, Race & Class by Angela Y. Davis

Writing Project:

Papers are to be submitted on-line in Canvas on or before the due date; How do I submit an online assignment? (Links to an external site.). Papers are to be a minimum of four pages in length.

General writing assignment guidelines for typed essays:

  1. Always identify by your full name, course number, and date at the upper left hand corner of the front page.
  2. Use double spacing, title and label each section of your paper.
  3. Do not include a cover sheet or any form of binder for type-written papers.
  4. Proofread your document thoroughly. Make sure to read through your document prior to submitting it. Ask yourself for each sentence, “Does this sentence make sense?”
  5. If you paraphrase you must include an in-text citation, even if you do not directly quote (include author(s), page #; use APA, ASA, or MLA style for citations.). Students can be accused of plagiarism if they do not cite the authors and/or if they try to pass other peoples’ ideas off as their own. Try to get used to using citations and references in your writing as this is a crucial skill for success in college writing (note: Use the authors of our textbook unless you go to the original source).

Points will be deducted from assignments for failing to follow these guidelines.

You are to critically and sociologically analyze your book based upon the following guidelines:

  1. State the main issue or problem the author is focusing on in this book.
  2. What is the main purpose of the book? Why did the author write the book?
  3. State clearly the information being used by the author and its relationship to the main issue.
  4. What are the conclusion(s) being drawn by the author? Utilize the three sociological perspectives: functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism as a basis for drawing your conclusions. Give at least one example of each perspective.
  5. What are the implications of the conclusion(s)? Do they make sense?
  6. What are the main concepts being used in the book which relate to the main issue?
  7. What is the point of view of the author?
  8. What are the author’s assumptions?
  9. Once you have clearly established the author’s logic as detailed in one through eight above, add the following to your paper:
  10. Discuss the significance of the issue that is the focus of the book. Why is it important? On what do you base your assertions regarding its significance?
  11. What potential problems do you see in the author’s reasoning? What potential problems are there with the author’s use of information? Does the information used appear relevant, significant, valid, and sufficient for the conclusions being drawn? Do you have enough information to determine whether the information is relevant, significant, valid?
  12. What point of view is ignored by this author, or has not been considered in dealing with the issue?
  13. Point out at least two fallacies used by the author. Refer to the list of fallacies under Pages in Canvas.
  14. Point out an example of deductive and inductive reasoning by the author.

Remember this is not a book report but rather a critical and sociological analysis of your book utilizing the guidelines outlined above.

Grading: your paper will be graded using the following guidelines: Stating clearly the theme of the book as outlined in 1 and 2 above (10 points); following guidelines # 3 and #4 (5 points for each sociological theory for a total of 15 points); answering the questions as outlined in #5 thru 8 (20 points); answering the questions posed in # 10 (10 points); and following the critical analysis of your book as detailed in #s 11 thru 14 (40 points); and 5 points for your summary and overall appearance (length, grammar, spelling, and organization). Total =100 points.

RSCH 8110 Walden University Representation of Probability Sampling Discussion Science Assignment Help

Discussion: Sampling and Collecting Quantitative and Qualitative Data

It is often not possible or practical to study an entire population, so researchers draw samples from which they make inferences about a population of interest. In quantitative research, where generalization to a population is typically valued, a researcher’s ability to make such inferences is only as good as the sampling strategy she or he uses to obtain the sample. Once an appropriate sample has been obtained, data collection should involve valid and reliable measures to ensure confidence in the results, as well as the ability to generalize the research outcomes. Although generalization is typically not a goal in qualitative research, sampling is just as important in qualitative and mixed methods research, as is obtaining reliable and valid results. Indeed, for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, sampling strategies and accurate data collection methods are critical aspects of the research process.

Specific methods of data collection (e.g., surveys, interviews, observations) produce specific types of data that will answer particular research questions, but not others; so here too, as covered in previous weeks, the research questions inform how the data will be obtained. Furthermore, the method used to collect the data may impact the reliability and the validity of that data.

For this Discussion, you will first consider sampling strategies. Then, you will turn your attention to data collection methods, including their strengths, limitations, and ethical implications. Last, you will consider measurement reliability and validity in the context of your discipline.

With these thoughts in mind, if your last name starts with A through L, use Position A. If your last name starts with M through Z, use Position B.

Position A: Probability sampling represents the best strategy for selecting research participants.
Position B: Nonprobability (or purposive) sampling represents the best strategy for selecting research participants.

By Day 4

Post a restatement of your assigned position on sampling strategies. Explain why this position is the best strategy for selecting research participants. Support your explanation with an example and support from the scholarly literature. Next, select a data collection method (e.g., surveys, interviews, observations) and briefly explain at least one strength and at least one limitation. Then, identify a potential ethical issue with this method and describe a strategy to address it. Last, explain the relationship between measurement reliability and measurement validity using an example from your discipline.

Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

Oakland Community College Moore and Parker Quote Analysis Discussion Humanities Assignment Help

Moore and Parker say on p. 133, that

“we as critical thinkers must be able to […] distinguish the between the logical force of a set of remarks and its psychological force”.

Using a rhetorical device presented in Ch. 5, give an example of this, clearly presenting both the logical force as well as the psychological force of your chosen set of remarks.

Example: “The (middle-aged) substitute teacher said we were noisy in Social Studies class today, and so we would all have our time at recess cut in half. You should have seen the look on her face when Pat said to her – “Yeah, OK, boomer.” That took the wind out of her sails. She won’t be cutting our recess down again!”

In terms of the logical force of what Pat said here – there was none really. There is no substance here. No reason was provided for why the substitute teacher’s decision was unfair or somehow inappropriate. Moreover, becoming middle-aged and being of the so-called baby-boomer generation is not anything to be ashamed of.

In terms of the psychological force, Pat was being sarcastic with the “Yeah” and the “OK” words. Pat was not agreeing to what the teacher did, nor did Pat really think it OK. In addition, Pat also used a dysphemism when calling the teacher a ‘boomer’ . The word ‘boomer’ was intended to induce a negative attitude towards the teacher. Evidently, that teacher took that to heart, the putative insult seemed to carry some negative weight.

It is to be noted that rhetorical devices are context-dependent. In some contexts, a ‘boomer’ is simply a term for a being a member of a generation. “OK, boomer” is not really horrible thing to say (!), but typically it is used as a mild dysphemism.
