Major Writing Assignment #2: Literary Analysis on Conformity
- Due Oct 26 by 11:59pm
- Points 100
- Submitting a file upload
Purpose and Background:
Throughout this unit, you have been reading stories, poems, and a play relating to the theme of conformity. A literary analysis can take different forms as you learned in the first module on writing about literature. For this assignment, you can choose to focus on character, historical context, symbols, or themes.
Literary analysis essays encourage you to think about how or why a piece of literature was written. To do this successfully, you need to remember that authors make specific rhetorical choices for particular reasons. When you are writing your analysis, you should explore the author’s choices and explain their significance.
This assignment is aligned with the following objectives:
MO 10.1 Demonstrate fluency with literary terminology and be able to apply these terms to works read in the course
MO 10.2 Analyze literary works’ exploration of the human condition and the ethical and cultural problems of the time, and consider how such issues continue to resonate in the contemporary world.
MO 10.3 Evaluate and interpret literary works from ethical, social, cultural, historical, philosophical, artistic, and/or biographical perspectives
MO 10.4 Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics and techniques of the major literary genres
MO 10.5 Communicate clearly in a variety of modes and media
MO 10.6 Demonstrate continuing mastery of grammar, usage, and diction
MO 10.7 Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively.
MO 10.8 Demonstrate the ability to analyze communication critically.
Instructions:
Topic 1
Berenger’s transformation is the true metamorphosis in Rhinoceros. While the other characters physically turn into rhinoceroses, embodying the savage natures they had formerly repressed, Berenger’s change is moral and completely opposite from his position at the start of the play. Write a character analysis of Berenger showing how he was able to change his character rather than accept the presence of the rhinos.
Topic 2
The main character of the “A & P”& is Sammy, a teenager, who tries to rebel against the system and structure of social norms represented in the form of rules and standards typical for the A&P stores. His rebellion is a local reflection of those ideas, ideological and cultural changes which were developed in the society of the USA in the 1960’s. Write an essay that analyzes the importance of historical context in shaping the themes of this story.
Topic 3
“The Lottery” is filled with symbols. This story is in many ways a parable more than a traditional story. Jackson describes a society so mired in its traditions that it has lost the ability to even look at the reasons for those traditions, but instead follows them blindly even when they hurt its citizens. Write an essay discussing the use of symbols in this story.
Topic 4
Discuss the themes of anonymity, conformity, and government control in “Unknown Citizen.”
Requirements:
- Essay should be a minimum of 700 words.
- Essay should include 4 different sources, two of which MUST come from the literary databases.
- Essay should include a minimum of 6-8 citations within the text. Half of these should be textual references or direct quotes.
- Essay must have a works cited page that includes ONLY sources actually cited in the paper.
- All documentation should use proper MLA style.
- Introduction should include the title of the work, publication information, a little bit about the author, and a very brief summary of what the piece is about. The introduction should end with a clearly stated thesis.
Tips:
- Your introductory paragraph should accomplish the following:
- Introduce the author and the title of the work or works being discussed.
- Brief biographical information about the author.
- Clearly stated thesis introducing the topic and presenting your main points.
- Body paragraphs should develop the thesis statement using transitional sentences to move from one section to the next.
- Review the MLA module and make sure all of your citations are in proper MLA format.
- Make sure the only sources listed on the works cited page are sources that you have actually cited from in the paper itself.
- Make sure the works cited page is in alphabetical order using proper formatting.
- This is a major writing assignment so get help with editing and revising from tutor.com, the writing center, or your instructor.
- If you are writing on topic 1, you might want to read the following article on character analysis.
- If you are writing on topic 2, check out these helpful hints on historical context.
- If you have chosen topic 3, read this article on writing about symbols.
- Finally, if you are exploring the theme in “Unknown Citizen” read this article.

Holistic Nursing Care Attend Patients Physical Cognitive & Spiritual Needs Discussion Health Medical Assignment Help
Holistic nursing care attends equally to patients’ physical, cognitive, and spiritual needs. Although each need has its own dimension, the body, mind, and spirit are also interrelated.
-Provide one example each of a physical, cognitive, and spiritual need. (3 total)
– Discuss specific ways a nurse can address each need.
– What techniques could you use to facilitate restoring a patient’s health and wholeness?
Support opinions with professional literature in correct APA 7th ed. format and cite correctly within the text of the response.
Use: O’Brien, M.E. (2018). Spirituality in Nursing: Standing on Holy Ground (6th ed.). Jones & Bartlett Learning. Chapter 1 pp.1-15
Use Mark Chapter 4 Verses 26-29:
“This is how it is with the reign of God. A man scatters seed on the ground. He goes to bed and gets up day after day. Through it all the seed sprouts and grows without his knowing how it happens. The soil produces of itself first the blade, then the ear, finally the ripe wheat in the ear. When the crop is ready he wields the sickle, for the time is ripe for harvest.”Each of us has a part of ourselves that is like a seed. The idea is that the seeds are a small symbol of each one of us – a symbol of our patients who we care for each day. When you spend time with a patient, that person connects with and absorbs your warmth and kindness … your desire to help them to grow. To realize the potential of a seed, what is needed? Sun, dirt, water, a “nurturing environment”. Do you ever think of yourself as a “sower”? In our society today, most of us spend 80% of our time on “automatic pilot”. Everything we do each day has become so routine. Rarely are we fully aware of what we are doing. Did you ever arrive at some destination and not remember exactly how you got there? Have you ever driven your car, but not been fully aware of where you had driven? On the other hand, in a brand “new” situation, 80% of the time we are in a state of heightened “awareness”. We are made aware or alert to new situations – we are “on guard”. Consider the difference between a “first date” and being married for forty-six years (just thought I would pick that number out of a hat!). That is sometimes the difference between “awareness” and “automatic pilot”.Theology is literally the ‘study of God’, but also refers to the ability to “reflect on our own experiences”. It means not living our life on “automatic pilot”. When you see gently falling snow, do you delight and reflect on the beauty of the experience and say WOW! OR do you think of shoveling and icy roads and the dreadfulness of winter and say YUK? When you eat do you offer grace and/or thanksgiving, relishing and enjoying every bite of even a simple salad OR do you shove down the sandwich and fries you picked up through the drive-in at Burger King?Taste and savor each and every moment. Live for today, do not be concerned about yesterday, and do not worry about tomorrow. Remember that quote from the bible about the lilies of the field? Not always an easy thing to do, but I challenge you to “taste and savor the experience” of life. You are called to become a perfect creation. No one is called to become who you are called to be. It does not matter how short or tall or thick-set or slow you may be. It does not matter whether you sparkle with life or are silent as a still pool, whether you sing your song aloud or weep alone in darkness. It does not matter whether you feel loved and admired or unloved and alone. For you are called to become a perfect creation. No one’s shadow should cloud your becoming. No one’s light should dispel your spark.
Use correct APA grammar, punctuation and spelling!

****BELOW IS MY PEERS RESPONSE****
Respond to each of the following as you think about the changes you have seen in your own community over the past months in response to the COVID 19 pandemic or other significant event such as a hurricane or wildfire:
Briefly define/describe needs assessments:
Needs assessments requires gathering figures and statistics that the population demands for social problems and or develop programs that can potentially resolve any issues.
Identify a specific issue in your community for which needs assessment would be important;
The Food Bank in New Braunfels, Texas has been suffering since the beginning of Covid-19 pandemic. I did a project I believe last year at the Food Bank, and there was already an issue then regarding helping the homeless.
Since the pandemic, the Food Bank has had a hard time allowing family to gather their food, but also attend their weekly classes. Homelessness in New Braunfels seems to grow every year and the city is choosing to ignore it (Mr. Lee’s words).
Identify the key stakeholders that would be important to include in such a needs assessment and why;
The New Braunfels Food Bank is a 501(C)(3), this means that the organization is a nonprofit organization. “Section 501(C)(3) is the portion of the US Internal Revenue Code that allows for federal tax exemption of nonprofit organizations, specifically those that are considered public charities, private foundations or private operating foundations” (Foundation Group, 2020)
The Food Bank actually collect the food from charities and smaller agencies, and they distribute the food directly to individuals and families who are struggling with hunger (Feeding America, 2020).
“Engaging the community to understand food needs, including community stakeholders in the community health needs assessment process” (Delivering Community Benefit, 2018). The following are how assessments are made:
– Understanding the environments in which community members make food decisions as well as the availability of resources to meet daily food needs in critical to effectively address diet-related health conditions.
– Beyond satisfying community benefit requirements, there are a number of benefits to conducting a robust landscape assessment of existing community food resources and engaging community members during the community health needs assessment (CHNA) and health improvement planning process.
o Leads to a more detailed understanding of community needs
o Identifies potential partners in order establish or strengthen relationships to improve reach, impact and long-term sustainability or efforts
– There are number of ways that community organizations that address food issues can participate in the CHNA process:
o Participate in inventory food-related community resources
o Participate in interviews, survey, and focus groups
o Participate in community health data review and health needs prioritization
o Serve on the CHNA steering/advisory committee.
This guidance brief complements the guidance brief on data source regarding food access, food environments, and food behaviors to assist facilities in understanding health food access needs and opportunities in their CHNAs.
After choosing one group of key stakeholders, develop 3 (three) open-ended questions that you would ask that group and why those questions would be important; keep in mind open-ended questions cannot be answered with a simple “yes or no” or a predefined set of option responses
Stakeholders are independent individuals or could be an independent party who has an investment in a particular agency or organization.
In the case of the New Braunfels Food Bank, as mentioned before is a 501(c)(3), and from what the website shows; the organization is their best to handle the pandemic of the Covid-19.
The Food Bank website shows that there is an emergency food distribution at a local church that families or individuals in need can sign up for a basket of food. With that in mind, I would ask the stakeholders the following questions:
Families and individuals in need are required to sign up online to receive a basket of food; with that being the case, what do families do if they don’t have internet or know the updates of where to pick up the food if they do not have internet?
My second question would be, during this pandemic a lot of individuals unfortunately have lost their jobs, and we have all noticed that food is flying off the shelves; how is the Food Bank able to keep up with the need?
Final question would be that of the volunteers. During the pandemic there has been a shortage of masks, gowns and gloves; how does or did the New Braunfels Food Bank succeed in protecting their employees and volunteers?
Asking questions regarding how the food bank is protecting their staff and how they are still able to gather enough food is important for the local community to know. Knowing there is food for them and that the staff can prevent the spread of the Covid-19 is important as well.
What obstacles do you think you might encounter in attempting to gather these responses from the chosen group of stakeholders?
Some counties do not like to admit there is a need for assistance for their population. The population of Guadalupe County and Comal County, which is where the New Braunfels Food Bank is located, 9.5% of the population in this area is considered living in poverty.
Should someone ask about the poverty population in this area, I am afraid that the answer would be that of facts regarding the median income and the median home value. Facts are important, but also how one feels on a subject is just as important.
What ethical or cultural considerations would you need to consider in conducting this needs assessment?
In Central to South Texas, the Hispanic population in poverty is 51%. “Hispanic Texans represent 39 percent of the state population, but they make up a disproportionate amount – over half – of the population below the poverty level” (Poverty in Texas, 2017). This data shows that the need of a Food Bank in local areas are very much needed.
