         The power that the government holds over its people comes from open and free rights to elections for citizens of the United States of America to have a government say. People being governed by civil law have equal rights and freedom. Since the civil laws put in place are similar all over the state, people, therefore, are bound by the same rule. Without civil law, society will be operating in a way that the stronger person wins. If a person is not strong enough, they will always be left out and will not have an equal chance.

The Social Contract is a book written by Jean Jacques Rousseau in 1762, in which he theorizes the relationship between political involvement and the people. He creates an analogy of the relation between the state and people. “The most ancient of all societies, and the only one that is natural, is the family: and even so the children remain attached to the father only so long as they need him for their preservation” (Rousseau, 2. The first societies). As children remain attached to their father for preservation, so does the people to their ruler. As soon as what the people need ceases, they end the bond. After this, the ruler releases the people from his care, and they are set free from having to obey him. Thus, people gain their independence, but they willingly retain their unity and bond. Rousseau thinks the proper kind of parent-child relationship applicable in this situation is that where the children love their father, love changes to the command when it comes to the state. This analogy applies to people’s relationship with the government since the ruler is in charge of the people and has power over them. The type of relationship that could apply rightly to this situation is a father who is protective of his children. 

          Rousseau explains the right of the strongest in terms of obedience being a necessary factor to support the laws that protect all: “To yield to force is an act of necessity, not of will — at the most, an act of prudence” (Rousseau, 3. The rights of the strongest). Obedience is where the people have to abide by the set rules using force while in duty. The United States has been useful in establishing right from wrong with the principles of the Constitution. The people comply with the commands willingly without using any power and taking the responsibilities as theirs. The relationship between the people and the government is that of obedience. In the United States, the laws enforced rely more on compliance since they have to abide by them. Jacques also makes a just claim regarding authority and rights. “Let us then admit that force does not create right and that we are obliged to obey only legitimate powers” (Rousseau, 3. The rights of the strongest).

         In current times, the United States faces systemic injustice of race. Although the nation has put an end to exclusions and suppression of particular people, it failed to end structural racism. Even after abolishing slavery and the motion of the 14th and 15th amendments, Black people do not have equal voting rights. In 2013, Shelby County v. Holder declared the formula to discover jurisdictions to be unconstitutional. Lawmakers adopted a technique of strict identification during voting ballots were being submitted. Lawmakers made restrictions on African Americans and Native American’s voting rights.

In Washington D.C., felony disenfranchisement and the denial of suffrage have led to lawmakers’ failure to end structural racism. A thriving democracy can only be made possible if all citizen’s voting rights are established without fault. New laws should be passed to ensure that poll closures do not happen out of spite or unnecessary actions. Felony disenfranchisement, strict identification for voting, poll tax, and discriminatory voting regulations should be repealed. The 14th amendment has failed to secure many rights of primarily African Americans over the years. The following is the prime message of the amendment that is deemed to protect citizens’ rights. “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws” (U.S. Constitution). The 15th amendment states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude” (U.S. Constitution). Specific legislation on voting rights for racial groups has been denied their rights to participate and have a governmental say. 

            Civil laws and obedience to these laws will allow for the relationship between the government and its’ people to thrive and be as potent as one. The Role of Democracy

         The power that the government holds over its people comes from open and free rights to elections for citizens of the United States of America to have a government say. All groups of people from different backgrounds shall have an equal opportunity to partake in politics. Every voice and opinion should be valued and given full recognition. People being governed by civil law have equal rights and freedom. Since the civil laws put in place are similar all over the state, people, therefore, are bound by the same rule. Without civil law, society will be operating in a way that the stronger person wins. If a person is not strong enough, they will always be left out and will not have an equal chance.

The Social Contract is a book written by Jean Jacques Rousseau in 1762, in which he theorizes the relationship between political involvement and the people. He creates an analogy of the relation between the state and people. “The most ancient of all societies, and the only one that is natural, is the family: and even so the children remain attached to the father only so long as they need him for their preservation” (Rousseau, 2. The first societies). As children remain attached to their father for preservation, so does the people to their ruler. As soon as what the people need ceases, they end the bond. After this, the ruler releases the people from his care, and they are set free from having to obey him. Thus, people gain their independence, but they willingly retain their unity and bond. Rousseau thinks the proper kind of parent-child relationship applicable in this situation is that where the children love their father, love changes to the command when it comes to the state. This analogy applies to people’s relationship with the government since the ruler is in charge of the people and has power over them. The type of relationship that could apply rightly to this situation is a father who is protective of his children. 

          Rousseau explains the right of the strongest in terms of obedience being a necessary factor to support the laws that protect all: “To yield to force is an act of necessity, not of will — at the most, an act of prudence” (Rousseau, 3. The rights of the strongest). Obedience is where the people have to abide by the set rules using force while in duty. The United States has been useful in establishing right from wrong with the principles of the Constitution. The people comply with the commands willingly without using any power and taking the responsibilities as theirs. The relationship between the people and the government is that of obedience. In the United States, the laws enforced rely more on compliance since they have to abide by them. Jacques also makes a just claim regarding authority and rights. “Let us then admit that force does not create right and that we are obliged to obey only legitimate powers” (Rousseau, 3. The rights of the strongest).

         In current times, the United States faces systemic injustice of race. Although the nation has put an end to exclusions and suppression of particular people, it failed to end structural racism. Even after abolishing slavery and the motion of the 14th and 15th amendments, Black people do not have equal voting rights. In 2013, Shelby County v. Holder declared the formula to discover jurisdictions to be unconstitutional. Lawmakers adopted a technique of strict identification during voting ballots were being submitted. Lawmakers made restrictions on African Americans and Native American’s voting rights.

In Washington D.C., felony disenfranchisement and the denial of suffrage have led to lawmakers’ failure to end structural racism. A thriving democracy can only be made possible if all citizen’s voting rights are established without fault. New laws should be passed to ensure that poll closures do not happen out of spite or unnecessary actions. Felony disenfranchisement, strict identification for voting, poll tax, and discriminatory voting regulations should be repealed. The 14th amendment has failed to secure many rights of primarily African Americans over the years. The following is the prime message of the amendment that is deemed to protect citizens’ rights. “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws” (U.S. Constitution). The 15th amendment states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude” (U.S. Constitution). Specific legislation on voting rights for racial groups has been denied their rights to participate and have a governmental say. 

            Civil laws and obedience to these laws will allow for the relationship between the government and its’ people to thrive and be as potent as one. Everyone must have an equal opportunity to participate in political affairs to have a just democracy. The United States has come a long way to improve, but it still has a long way to go to ensure justice and equality for all.
