Jailhouse Informants

Prologue:

Due to Badpenny’s financial situation, she is unable to post bail because her bond is set too high. The charges Badpenny faces include possession of methamphetamine (felony), possession of drug paraphernalia (misdemeanor), and official misconduct – using her position as a dispatcher to access confidential information for personal gain (misdemeanor).

While Badpenny sits in jail awaiting the disposition of her case, many of the jailers treat her with indifference. When Badpenny requests to use the phone, take a shower, or get commissary, the jailers disregard her request. Badpenny noticed that the jailers did not treat the other prisoners as poorly; she has worked with most of these jailers and cannot believe the jailers would mistreat her.

Badpenny has no one to talk to except her cellmate, Heather Scandell, whose current arrest was for possession of cocaine and methamphetamines with intent to sell. Badpenny and Scandell have been in jail for weeks together in the same cell sharing life experiences and hopes for their future.

Everyday Scandell tries to get Badpenny to discuss her case, but Badpenny remains guarded; she will not discuss her criminal case with anyone but her attorney, Liddy Gate. One day, after getting back from the law library, Scandell’s cot was empty, Badpenny asked the jailer where she went, the jailer told Badpenny not to worry about the other inmates. Later that day, a jailer came to inform Badpenny that her attorney wants to talk with her, the jailer escorted Badpenny to the visitation room.

Liddy Gate told Badpenny to sit down she had some troubling news about her case. Once Badpenny sat down, Liddy informed Badpenny that Heather Scandell, her cellmate has become a jailhouse informant for the prosecution against her. Liddy said, “Scandell is going to get a reduced sentence in exchange for testifying against you. Scandell spoke with the prosecuting attorney and explained how you got the confidential information from county and city where you where worked, and then gave it to Dreadford in exchange for methamphetamines.”

Badpenny told Liddy that none of what Scandell says is true; she has not talked to anyone about her case. Badpenny asked Liddy, “Why is this happening to me?”

Liddy told Badpenny, “I will do what I can to minimize the damage Scandell may cause. I will see if we can get a plea deal instead of going to trial.”

Marketers –

Here is a new discussion to add a conversation on current events this week. Please feel free to openly and respectfully join this discussion. You must still, however, answer the original discussion to earn your 30 points this week.

As many of you may have already heard, The Washington Redskins (and this may be one of the last times I can use this name) are reassessing the name of the team and plan to change it.

This is a very clear example of a business that is pivoting due to external events. The Washington Redskins (yes, said it again!) have resisted changing the name of their team for many years. And in fact, the owner has said publicly on many occasions that he will never change the name of his team.

Yet, here we go.

Why did the team now decide to reassess the name and logo? There have been a couple of events that have happened recently that appear to have impacted this decision.

If you look at this from a marketing standpoint, what do you think is the real driving factor behind this change?

The different characteristics of corrections professional and ethical dilemmas

Prologue:

After Badpenny’s cellmate, Scandell spoke with the prosecuting attorney about testifying against Badpenny in exchange for leniency on some of her charges, the prosecuting attorney drafted a plea agreement and sent it to Liddy’s office. The prosecuting attorney will use Scandell’s testimony if this case goes to trial. However, the prosecuting attorney would prefer to avoid a trial altogether and save the taxpayers some money by settling this case with a plea agreement. When drafting the plea agreement, the prosecuting attorney took into account that Badpenny has no prior criminal history.

Liddy Gate, Badpenny’s attorney, met with Badpenny in the jail and presented her with a plea agreement offer drawn up by the prosecuting attorney. Liddy, said, “Badpenny, this is a good deal and probably the best you will get from the prosecution. Especially in light of the recent events with Scandell who will testify against you and then in court it becomes your word against hers.”

Badpenny said, “But Scandell is lying can’t you do something about her testifying against me, are there not laws that prevent this from happening?”

Liddy responded, “Even though Scandell is lying; I believe it will damage your chances of avoiding prison time with a jury. I recommend you look over the plea agreement and truly consider it as an option.”

Badpenny agreed to look at the plea agreement and read the terms out-loud in front of Liddy. “I am to wear a GPS ankle bracelet for 5-years for the possession of methamphetamine charge, which will run concurrent with my official misconduct charge, and the prosecution will drop the possession of drug paraphernalia charge. I then will have to report to a probation officer twice a month during the five years, maintain employment, no negative contact with the police, and I cannot associate with any known felons.” Badpenny asks, “Does this include my boyfriend, Mitch Dreadford?”

Liddy, replies, “Yes, and if you agree to this plea agreement, I can get you in front of the judge this afternoon, and you would be out of jail by early this evening. However, once you get released, I will have to drive you to Community Corrections where you will get fitted for your GPS ankle bracelet and then I can drop you off at home.”

Badpenny replies, “Well I am tired of being in jail and if this is the best deal you think I will get, then I will agree to the plea agreement.”

Assignment:

This week use the information from chapter 12 and complete a 2 to 3–page paper, discussing the different options a Community Correctional personnel will use to “promote rehabilitation for the client [the accused] and safety and security for the community” (Pollock, 2019, p. 389). Explain the four different types of probation and parole officers described in our textbook; identify which one you believe would help Badpenny be successful during her five-year probationary period. In addition, discuss some of the dilemmas that probation and parole officers face, and how selective enforcement regarding reporting infractions or revoking an offender’s release may not be ethical.

Grantham Corruption Within Community Corrections Case Study Discussion Law Assignment Help

Week 7 Case Study – Corruption within Community Corrections

The police arrested Jack Daniels for driving under the influence of alcohol. Daniels had no criminal history, which made him eligible for diversion. If Daniels completes his diversionary contract within 90-days, the court will dismiss his charges. Daniels accept the diversion contract in which he must attend a group counseling meeting each week for 90-days given by Mike Ponzi a community corrections counselor.

Daniels happens to have a good job and makes 200,000 dollars a year. After attending the first counseling meeting, Daniels feels that these meetings are beneath him and a waste of time. At the second meeting, Daniels waits for all the other members to leave then approaches Ponzi, and says, “I would like to offer you two roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere in the Continental U.S. All you have to do is sign off on my attendance sheet that I have to turn into the court to prove that I attended all my meetings.”

Ponzi replies, “I suppose it would not hurt anything to sign off on your sheet, you are not a repeat offender. I will do it but if you ever say I did this, I will tell the court that you forged my signature.”

Daniels hands Ponzi the airline ticket vouchers.

Ponzi postdated the rest of the meetings on Daniels attendance sheet, signs off on it, hands it back to Daniels and says, “It is a pleasure doing business with you.”

University of the Cumberlands Mobile Forensics Paper Computer Science Assignment Help

you will be conducting a forensics investigation using one of the following items:

  1. A smartphone
  2. A network (ideally, a wireless network)

You may use either for your investigation. However, be aware of legal issues surrounding your data gathering. If you are using any system you do not personally control and have authority to investigate/discover, please get written permission from the owner/operator of the system or refrain from your forensics analysis of that systems and use a personal system. For a network, you can use your own personal home network. For a smartphone, consider using an image from the Internet or a personal device. There could be issues related to using a live, active, personal device (example: corruption of the device). If using a personal device, consider using an old, outdated phone, if available.

You will review various forensics tools used with your selected system. Select a tool and use that tool to gather forensics data for analysis. You are simulating the process of gathering this data, so you do not need to investigate a compromised device or system. The project deliverables are as follows:

Prepare a two-page paper (double-spaced) that describes the device or system you will investigate and the intended tool you plan to use to conduct your forensics investigation. The interim paper should be in the form of an Executive Summary. Be sure to provide references in APA format.
