What was Alvords world like growing-up in the Navajo reservation given that she was of
mixed background? How did she integrate her two worlds as she was growing -up?
In a paragraph explain the Navajo culture as experienced by a growing-up Alvord, and
emphasize 3 cultural characteristics by explaining them in more detail.
Alvord left the reservation to go to medical school, how did her Navajo background show-up
in medical school? In what ways did she change as a medical student?
Once back in the reservation, Alvord realized that she had become culturally uprooted from
the Navajo culture, explain in what ways she had to change once more to readjust to the
Navajo reservation as a doctor.
Explain the Navajo ideas of illness, health, and curing, and contrast these with what Alvords
conception of Navajo philosophy was. How do these views relate to her ideal of medical
practice?
Discuss two of Alvords Navajo patients and explain what they taught her about Navajo
culture and about being a good doctor. Finally, explain Alvords relationship with medicine
men and women and what led her to see Thomas Hataathlii.
