The file beijingAirQuality2013.csv contains the average atmospheric particulate matter that have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) at the US Embassy in Beijing, China and meteorological data from Beijing Capital International Airport for each day in 2013. The variables included are:

Note: Problem 1, 4, 6 are related to the materials in module 08.

Problems

1. Construct a scatterplot matrix of all the numeric variables. Interpret the results. In particular, describe the relationship among all numeric variables and their perceived ability to predict the response, PM2.5. Do you think there is potential multicollinearity?  Why or why not? Are any transformations necessary for the response and the predictors? Why or why not?
2. Fit a regression model for the PM 2.5 as a function of DEWP, TEMP, PRES and log(Iws+1). Construct residual diagnostic plots of that fit. Do there appear to be any assumption violations?
3. Use a Box-Cox plot to determine whether a transformation of the response variable could improve the model fit. If the plot suggests a transformation (consider only square root, logarithmic and inverse transformations), fit the model with that transformation and comment on the residual diagnostic plots for that model. Does it make sense to do a transformation?
4. Calculate the VIF for the fitted model in Problem 3, do you think there is a moderate concern of multicollinearity based on the results of VIF (could be <10 but >5)? If the only goal is to predict PM2.5, do you think we need to remove any variables?
5. Create a new variable called “Season” that consists of the four meteorological seasons (Winter is December, January, and February; Spring is March, April, and May; Summer is June, July and August; and Autumn is September, October and November). Use the same transformation in part 3 for the response variable, fit a model with all numerical variables (DEWP, TEMP, PRES and log(Iws+1)), this new “Season” variable and an interaction between TEMP and Season. Compare this model to a model with main effects. Which model do you prefer? Why? Support your conclusions with an appropriate hypothesis test.
6. Provide the Cook’s distance plots of the model with interaction term. What do you observe? If there is a suspicious point, fit a model without this point, do you observe a lot of changes on the regression coefficients?
7. Use the model with interaction fitted in part 5 to estimate, with 95% confidence, the PM 2.5 for “Autumn” day with a dewpoint of 15 degrees, a temperature of 22 degrees, barametric pressure of 1004 hPa and a cumulative windspeed of 14 m/s (Hint: do the inverse of that transformation once you have your confidence interval). Interpret the interval.
8. Note that the data in this assignment are daily measures of air quality and weather information. Search the internet for the terms “autocorrelation” and/or “serial correlation”. Do you suspect this data is autocorrelated? If so, what are its impacts on the model assumptions made throughout this assignment. Discuss.

The summary needs to cover both the risks and benefits the two delivery systems could have in the procurement and use of medical resources at the hospital.
