Education has been a strong focal point in my life. I believe that when you pursue a degree in higher education, it truly enhances your quality of life in a variety of areas. In my opinion, you acquire more financial freedom and you become more apt to obtain better career opportunities that will strengthen your personal and career goals. As the second of three Hamptonian sisters and a rising junior, I would like to continue my educational journey by pursuing my doctoral degree in liberal studies, journalism, or architectural design. All three fields of study has sparked my interest and helped to narrow and shape my future goals and career path. My passion for dance and drawing and photography, is undeniable and has played an extensive role in shaping who I am as an individual. Therefore, my primary motivation for obtaining a higher education degree has the ability to enhance my doctoral research study. Currently, I am majoring in Liberal Studies with a minor in Journalism. During my learning experiences thus far, I had vast opportunities to learn many valuable lessons in writing, costume design, drawing, mock interviews, editing, and library preservation. The McNair Scholars Program will help to assist me achieve my educational/career paths by setting me up for success. It will also give me the opportunity to educate me on different types of graduate programs in schools cross the United States. As well as building a connection with people that are a part of the program I would like to be a part of. I have been a member of the TRIO program since middle school and was fortunate to explore multiple field experiences on various college/university campuses. My ultimate goal is to open a dance studio and be a beacon of light that will help shape and cultivate young minds by building their courageous spirits as they explore their creativity. I plan to lead by example for generations to come through after my generation and many more. A reflection paper is a structured essay that records your understanding of new ideas and concepts, and your critical assessment of those ideas. For each of the topics listed in the instructions, you will write approximately 1–2 pages that consists of the following two parts:

  • Summary: What is the main point of the reading(s) on this topic? What is the argument that the author is making and what evidence does he provide? What are the conclusions?

According to our reading, standard costs are often used, because they exclude parts of the history performance due to inefficiencies and consider the changes that will occur in the future. (Datar, 2018) You can’t really interpret why variances occur without looking at the bigger picture. A variance in one area could be the result of an inefficiency in another area. A static budget, also referred to as a master budget, is the budget that reflects what output is planned at the start of a period. It is called static because it is based off of a single output level. The flexible budget will calculate the revenues and costs into the budget that is based on what is actually produced during a period of time. A static budget is more of a planned budget and the flexible budget is more of a retroactive budget. (Datar, 2018) Chipotle would work different scenarios with their budget to make their product tasty, but for a lower cost. They found ways to save on labor by buying items that were already processed. One of the outbreaks of E. coli and norovirus had them looking into ways to keep the public safe, but also lowered the price of their ingredients. (Datar, 2018)

A standard cost is an important predetermined rate in production that helps management forecasting their future budgets, improving cost control, and for decision-making purposes. Static budget, also known as master budget, is used as a projection tool for estimating business revenue and expenses in advance within a given period. On the other hand, a flexible budget is used as an evaluation tool based on the actual costs that allow management adjusting costs in the next budget forecast. “The big difference between the static budget and the flexible budget is that the static budget is prepared for the planned output” while “the flexible budget is prepared retroactively based on the actual output” (Datar & Rajan, 2017, p.253).

The two main direct costs of Chipotle were labor and material costs. Chipotle reduced the labor costs, which includes wages and health benefits, by eliminating preparing its ingredients from scratch. Instead, the company had prepacked ingredients like pre-cut tomatoes, shredded cheese, and pre-cooked meat, etc. shipped to the stores to save time and money. With this strategy, Chipotle could also avoid material-cost variances. However, the company’s material costs raised approximately 4% due to focusing on natural ingredients.
