Passage from Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit (1978)

SETTING

The giant facsimile of a newspaper front page serves as a drop curtain.

The huge masthead reads: LOS ANGELES HERALD EXPRESS, Thursday June 3, 1943.

A headline cries out: ZOOT-SUITER HORDES INVADE LOS ANGELES. US NAVY AND MARINES ARE CALLED IN.

Behind this are black drapes creating a place of haunting shadows larger than life. The somber shapes and outlines of pachuco fabric evoking memories and feelings like an old suit hanging forgotten in the depths of a closet somewhere, sometime . . . Below this is a sweeping, curving place of levels and rounded corners with the hard, ingrained brilliance of countless spit shines, like the memory of a dance hall.

ACT ONE

PROLOGUE

A switchblade plunges through the newspaper. It slowly cuts a rip to the bottom of the drop. To the sounds of “Perdido” by Duke Ellington, EL PACHUCO emerges from the slit. HE adjusts his clothing, meticulously fussing with his collar, suspenders, cuffs. HE tends to his hair, combing back every strand into a long luxurious ducktail, with infinite loving pains. Then HE reaches into the slip and pulls out his coat and hat. HE dons them. His fantastic costume is complete. It is a zoot suit. HE is transformed into the very image of the pachuco myth, from his hat to the tip of his four-foot watch chain. Now HE turns to the audience. His three-soled shoes with metal taps click-clack as HE proudly [. . . ] defiantly makes his way downstage. HE stops and assumes a pachuco stance.

PACHUCO:

¿Que le watcha a mis trapos, ese?

¿Sabe qué, carnal?

Estas garras me las planté porque

Vamos a dejarnos caer un play, ¿sabe?

(HE crosses to center stage, models his clothes.)

Watcha mi tacuche, ese. Aliviánse con mis calcos, tando [. . .]

(Pause)

Nel, sabe qué, usted está muy verdolaga. Como se me hace

que es puro square.

(EL PACHUCO breaks character and addresses the audience in perfect English.)

Ladies and gentleman

the play you are about to see

is a construct of fact and fantasy.

The Pachuco Style was an act in Life

and his language a new creation.

His will to be was an awesome force

eluding all documentation. . .

A mythical, quizzical, frightening being

precursor of revolution

Or a piteous, hideous heroic joke

Deserving of absolution?

I speak as an actor on the stage.

The Pachuco was existential

For he was an Actor in the streets

both profane and reverential [. . .]

(Puts hat back on and turns.)

¡Pos órale!

(Music. The newspaper drop flies. EL PACHUCO begins his chuco stroll upstage, swinging his watch chain.)

Discussion #9: Reflective Writing–Analysis of Science Fiction Imagery Humanities Assignment Help

write 250 words based on the instructions below

Use this assignment as a place where you can express all that you have learned about the topic of humans and technology in either science fiction and in the real world as they are depicted in the imagery. The image to use to express all that you have learned about the topic of humans and technology in either science fiction and in the real world as they are depicted in the imagery. Draw some conclusions about the importance of this topic in the world today

SciFiPaintingAnalysisPic (1)-1.jpg

Respond to this writing from other student : I found this image extremely interesting. I believe I see a few different themes throughout this image. The artist uses mostly dark and bland colors to contribute to the dreary, sad tone. I believe that the woman is the only thing painted with color to try to put emphasis on how humans are not living a good life anymore. She is shown with her animals walking the opposite direction of soldiers and the large war robot. I believe one large theme in this is the tendency for man to get carried away with their creations, similar to Lawrence in The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect. Lawrence got carried away and created a supercomputer that was basically a god. While this giant robot doesn’t seem to have that same power, it looks very imposing and could be another example of a scientist getting carried away in a project. Another theme in this image is how advances in technology can actually cause harm to society and don’t correlate to our well being. Similar to social media technology in the real world, the repercussions of advanced technology in war could be the end of humanity itself. Advances in technology aren’t always for the greater good. While there have been things like advances in healthcare that have contributed to society, advances in war technology serve to harm it. While the giant machine isn’t shown harming anyone at the moment, one can only imagine the kind of destruction that it will cause. The woman in red seems tiny in comparison to it. The last theme I see in this image is that technology can be used for destruction. This doesn’t only speak to advances in war technology. For example, hackers can cause a lot of destruction in the sense that they can steal identities or scam others. Advances in smart home technology could serve to be destructive, because if the advanced AI in homes becomes sentient, an event similar to the events in a terminator movie could become real. I feel that this picture could become a real thing in the near future with how fast technology has been advancing. We are already in an age where we are creating sentient AI. Our technology has been progressing at an exponential rate. It is not difficult to see a reality where giant war robots are made in the future. I feel that throughout the course, I learned a lot about the dangers (and benefits) of technology and what science fiction as a genre is. This image goes to show the dangers that our continuous advances in technology have. This image also fits in perfectly with the elements of the science fiction genre. It is set in a time that looks realistic to us, and it shows things we know like cows and dogs so that it is more relatable to the viewer. Overall, there are a lot of different things to take away from this image that can connect to the things we have learned throughout the course.

  • Why Should an Organization Implement an ERM Application?
  • What are some Key Challenges and Solutions to Implementing an ERM?
  • What is Important for an Effective ERM?
  • Discuss at least one real organization that has been effective with implementing an ERM framework/application.
  • Conclusion – Final thoughts/future research/recommendation

QUESTION 3

  1. For the conventional Maine dairy farm the total farm acres which is acres is divided by the farm’s total 120.91 animal equivalent units (or AEU where 1 AEU = 1,000 lb of animal regardless of species) to get acres/AEU. Thus one divided by this acres/AEU means that the conventional Maine dairy farm has AEU/acre or lb/acre of animals, which is less than the organic Maine dairy farm. In other words, there is LESS animal mass per unit land area for the conventional dairy farm compared to the organic dairy farm. Please enter numerical values as they literally appear in the Excel file for the first 3 answers. For the 4th answer, please type in a whole number not using a decimal.

Peer Review!!

For this second project, you are taking a stab at producing a persuasive text of your own. Doing this requires thinking about who you are writing to and determining the best methods to use to persuade that particular audience. You should be making choices about which persuasive strategies to use based on who will be reading this letter. One of the best ways to tell if you’re on the right track with the methods you chose to use is to have someone else read your letter. Someone new looking at your letter can tell you which strategies stick out to them the most and whether or not they think you’ll have the desired effect on your audience.

As such, for your peer review this week, you will be performing a rhetorical analysis of someone else’s letter, focusing on the persuasive strategies you see them using in their writing and thinking about whether or not you think those tactics will work to successfully persuade the letter’s audience. In 2-3 paragraphs, I’d like you to answer the following questions for the letter you review:

  • Who is this letter addressed to? Do you think this is the most appropriate audience given the argument the writer is making? Why or why not?
  • What rhetorical strategies or other methods of persuasion do you see this person using in their letter? Did they go for a more logical appeal or an emotional one?
  • How does this writer make themselves credible? Why might the reader find them trustworthy or believable?
  • Do you think that the methods of persuasion this writer used will work successfully for their intended audience? Why or why not?

QUESTION 3

5 points

QUESTION 4

  1. In Maine, the organic dairy farm has more AEU/acre compared to the conventional dairy farm due to which of the following reason(s)? You may select one or more answers.
    a. Milk production.
    b. High expense of organic grain used to feed animals.
    c. Holons.
    d. Lack of diversity of livestock species.
    e. Diversity of livestock species on the farm.

QUESTION 5

  1. Food output per unit land area for the Maine organic dairy farm is equal to 609,387 total pounds produced per year (from milk, beef, pork, chicken, eggs, stewing hens and turkeys) divided by 315 acres to get a total food output of [x] lb/acre. This is LESS total food production per unit land area than the conventional dairy farm. Please enter the numerical value from the Excel file without a comma.

5 points

QUESTION 6

  1. Food output per unit land area for the Maine conventional dairy farm is equal to 913,157 total pounds produced per year (from just milk and beef) divided by 315 acres to get a total food output of [x] lb/acre. This is MORE total food production per unit land area than the organic dairy farm. Please enter the numerical value from the Excel file without a comma.

QUESTION 7

  1. The food that best explains the higher food productivity per unit land area of the conventional dairy farm compared to the organic dairy farms is MILK production. The conventional dairy farm’s average milk cow produces 19,961 lb of milk per year (slightly lower than the U.S. herd average), which is greater than the herd average for the organic dairy farm whose average milk cow only produces 14,000 lb of milk per year.

5 points

QUESTION 8

  1. Which of the following factor(s) better explains why the Maine organic dairy farm has the level of milk production it has compared to the Maine conventional dairy farm? You may select one or more answers.
    a. Animal ethics (e.g. not pushing milk cows so hard).
    b. High expense of organic grain used to feed animals.
    c. Holons.
    d. Lack of diversity of livestock species.
    e. Breed of milk cow species on the farm (e.g. Jersey vs Holstein).

5 points

QUESTION 9

  1. If the Maine organic dairy farm was not subject to the factor(s) specified as correct answer(s) in Question 8, it is theoretically possible for the organic farm to have milk production that is less thanequal togreater than the Maine conventional dairy farm. However many dairy farms do not want to be “industrial organic” and even those organic farms that are more industrially organic, the factor(s) specified may be extremely challenging to overcome especially given that concentrated grain feed makes up ~40% of variable costs of production for organic dairy farms. Concentrated grain feed (e.g. corn grain, soybeans) does not include ensiled forages fed such as grass and corn silages nor does it include any dry hay fed.

QUESTION 10

  1. For both organic and conventional dairy farms in Maine, please order in DECREASING frequency the following practices. For example after re-ordering, the first practice would be extremely common, the second the next most common, the third less common than the second, and the fourth the least common in Maine.

    – a. b. c. d. Dairy farmer purchases concentrated feed such as corn meal and soy meal.
    – a. b. c. d. Dairy farmer grows own forages such as corn silage and/or hay and grass silage.
    – a. b. c. d. Dairy farmer uses rBST (recombinant bovine somatotropin) injections.
