Deborah is 56 years old, smokes a half a pack of cigarettes a day, and is overweight. Her friend wants her to come to a local women’s fitness class she attends once a week. She knows Deborah’s dad had died of an acute myocardial infarction when he was 56, and she fears, seeing Deborah’s lifestyle, the same fate awaits her friend. What she did not know was that Deborah had also been to her doctor for her annual physical where she was told her LDLs were 180 mg/dL, HDLs were 36 mg/dL, and cholesterol was 239 mg/dL.

  1. What are Deborah’s known risk factors for coronary heart disease?
  2. Deborah’s doctor referred her to a dietician for strict dietary therapy, hoping the intervention would raise her HDL and lower her LDL and cholesterol levels. Why is diet modification necessary to control and moderate the lipids indicated?
  3. Deborah’s doctor also gave her pamphlets describing strategies to stop smoking and a list of exercise ideas she might want to try. How is smoking thought to contribute to atherosclerotic plaque formation? Why would exercise have a positive effect on Deborah’s lipid profile?
  4. Atherosclerosis is thought to be an inflammatory disorder. What is the role of macrophages in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques? What is the significance of elevated serum hs-CRP levels in at-risk individuals?

Park University Definition and Treatment of Addiction in American Society Responses Humanities Assignment Help

Katrina

  1. Discuss how Best’s constructionist perspective on deviance (Chapter 11) applies to the definition and treatment of addiction in American society.

“All knowledge is socially constructed; to say a social problem is socially constructed is not to imply that it does not exist, but rather that it is through social interaction that the problem is assigned particular meanings.” (Adler 107) Constructionists study many different social problems, but mostly focus on deviance such as illicit drug use. Best discusses those deemed the ‘claimsmakers’, or those who constructed social problems. Those who opened the narrative, for instance, the creation of the War on Drugs, ensued societies’ attention to America’s issue with drug use. However, these events and ‘claimsmakers’ do not necessarily convert into accomplishments that solve these types of social problems. “Thus, after wife abuse is defined as a social problem, it is still necessary for the police officer investigating a domestic call to define-or construct-these particular events of wife abuse.” (Adler 107) Considering the examples shown in the video, Cold Turkey: New Hampshire’s Prison Detox, we can see how drug use became socially constructed as deviant, and labeled as criminal. Many American’s struggling with drug use started by being a ‘good drug addict’, or someone who was prescribed opiates and used them as directed. When the government realized the problem opiate abuse was effecting society negatively, they had constructed this perspective that those abusing drugs were criminals, rather than those who may have fallen into unfortunate circumstances and required assistance. In turn, many of these people found themselves in jail or prison, labeled criminal, with no rehabilitation. Things like Suboxone were used improperly and retained a longer period of withdrawal, and once those prisoners were freed, they would relapse. The social construction of illicit drug use was negatively labeled, and due to this, the actions required to control or end this social problem were never accomplished.

  1. Using a constructionist perspective, evaluate the role of the medical system (including health clinics and hospitals) in defining and treating drug addiction (be sure to discuss the video report on New Hampshire’s Prison Detox in your answer).

During the video, Cold Turkey: New Hampshire’s Prison Detox, we saw a man who needed to tell his nurse he was going to kill himself so he could be admitted and receive the help he required. “Accurate and reliable knowledge about deviance is critically important to many groups in society” (Adler 109) and this rings especially true for those within the medical system. The primary sources of data used include official statistics, survey research, and field research. “Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and each may do a better job than the others of answering certain research questions. “ (Adler 111) Due to the social construction of drug addiction, many are likely to gear focus to official statistics. These can back fire when we want to gain an understanding of more detailed accounts. Take the man from the video who finally gets admitted as an example. Statistically speaking, he will fall under the ‘self-injury’ category for admission into the emergency room. Therefore, the real reason that brought that man there, drug addiction, remains hidden. Acknowledging these considerations within the medical system is imperative. To do so, survey research can be conducted to gain better insight, although not necessarily accurate. “To elaborate, first, it is unlikely that people-especially deviants- will fill out a questionnaire and readily disclose information about the hidden aspects of their lives.” (Adler 112) Thus, misinterpretations of these surveys are expected to transpire. As clinics and hospitals handle drug addicts, it is imperative that they make use of all research available, and take all of them with a grain of salt, understanding that not any of these methods are full proof. Furthermore, problem framing of the medical system in general can be found at the source, considering that the bottleneck can be highlighted in our ‘inaccurate’ statistical data. This leads back to how society had constructed the deviance of drug addiction, which resulted in the lack of care available to those in need.

  • Discuss how Best’s constructionist perspective on deviance (Chapter 11) applies to the definition and treatment of addiction in American society.

Joel’s Best constructionist perspective is the idea that deviance is socially constructed. He believes that it is developed through interactions and involvements with people and social groups. “The constructionists approach recognizes that people can only understand the world in terms of words and categories that they create and share with one another.” (Best. Pg.105) Today society labels everything a sickness and believes everything requires medical treatment, including deviance. “ “Medicalization – defining deviance as a form of illness requiring medical treatment…….” (Best. pg.107). Addiction is a socially constructed disease that is sometimes difficult to treat, because of many factors such as access, costs, and the process. The video Cold Turkey: New Hampshire’s Prison Detox, discussed how difficult it is to have access to rehabilitation centers in certain areas because of the number of addictions that surround those areas.

  1. Based on Chapter 39, explain the main factors involved in the BP Oil Spill and the Deepwater Horizon Explosion.

The main factors that were involved in the BP Oil Spill and Deepwater Horizon Explosion were organizational deviance. Organizational deviance, basically means that organizational goals are being violated and in turn are becoming a dangerous hazard. “Although individuals occupy organizational positions, their thoughts, actions, and behaviors are fundamentally shaped by the goals, procedures, standards, norms of an organization.” (Bradshaw. Pg. 467) another factor that led to this 2011 oil spill, is the fact that they were motivated by profit, and the opportunity of profit led workers to carelessly perform duties. Lastly, lack of control is also a factor that contributed to the BP Oil Spill. “Organizations subjected to a high operationality of social control are more likely to foster cultures, that favor compliance with laws and regulations, and organizations that are not subject to control are more likely to develop cultures of resistance.” (Bradshaw. Pg. 472). This organization’s moral codes were broken, which resulted in more deviant behavior.

Temple College Analysis on Food Security Paper Writing Assignment Help

Analysis on Food Security

Overview

The members of the United Nations found great value in the analysis you provided on the effects of global warming that result from population growth. They are now asking you write an additional analysis to include further issues related to population growth. Here is the issue they have asked you to consider:

The member states of the United Nations seek to build food systems that can provide global food security which will feed everyone, everywhere, every day by improving food quality though the promotion of effective and nutritional agricultural practices. The crucial issue is not the lack of food in the world but the access to that food. In many developing countries, food shortages are due to governmental control over food distribution. These governments maintain control of the population and their power by limiting access to nutritious food to certain groups. In this practice, they thereby “weaponize” food.

Your second project as a consultant for the United Nations is to develop an analysis that addresses three issues related to global food insecurity caused by global population growth and poverty, and to explore these issues in a developing country of your choosing.

Instructions

The U.N. has given you the following guidelines:

Content

The U.N. has asked that your paper contain three sections. Each section should be one page (or approximately 300 words) in length and answer specific questions, identified in the outline below. It also asks that you use examples from your developing country when answering the questions.

Introduction

Provide an introduction of half a page minimum that addresses points 1–5 below:

  1. Explain the problem the U.N. has asked you to address in your own words.
  2. Identify the three sections your paper will cover.
  3. Identify the developing country you will consider.
  4. Tell the U.N. the causes of food insecurity.
  5. Provide a one-sentence statement of your solutions at the end of your introduction paragraph.
Section I. Background
  1. What is food insecurity?
  2. What role does population growth play in food security?
Section II. Technologies That Can Reduce Hunger and Improve Food Security
  1. What forms of technology can be used to reduce hunger and improve food security?
  2. How would these technological solutions work?
  3. What causes of food insecurity do these technologies address?
Section III. Specific Factors in Chosen Developing Country
  1. Considering the causes of food insecurity, what factors interrupt the flow of food from the source to the people in the developing country you selected?
Conclusion
  • Provide a conclusion of half a page minimum that includes a summary of your findings that the United Nations can use to inform future policy decisions.
Success Tips
  • In answering each question, use examples from your developing country to illustrate your points.
  • The U.N. needs facts and objective analysis on which to base future policy decisions. Avoid personal opinion and make sure your answers are based on information you find through research.
Formatting Requirements
  • Make sure your paper consists of 4–6 pages of content (or 1,200 words minimum, not including the cover or reference pages).
  • Create headings for each section of your paper as follows:
    • Section I. Background.
    • Section II. Technologies That Can Reduce Hunger and Improve Food Security.
    • Section III. Specific Factors in Chosen Developing Country.
  • Use and cite at least five credible sources in your research. A list of potential resources is available below.

This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

Potential Resources

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is as follows:

  • Propose a plan to address the issue of global food security.

NAFTAS Impacts On States Economies US Mexico and Canada Research Paper Business Finance Assignment Help

Since its passage just 25 years ago, NAFTA has been controversial and, more recently, has become a favored punching bag during the last presidential election and continuing into the current administration. In addition, many analysts assert that the controversy over NAFTA has cast a negative shadow over recent efforts to forge trade deals. Along with President Trump, many manufacturing groups in the US claim major job losses from the US participation in NAFTA, particularly in the northern industrial states. Others assert that there has been a shift in manufacturing from northern industrial states such as Ohio to southern Sunbelt states like Texas and that overall US manufacturing employment has held steady. In Mexico, agricultural groups similarly point to job losses of over a million jobs in that sector. The controversy has been ongoing since even before the the agreement was signed (you may recall Ross Perot’s “giant sucking sound (Links to an external site.)” in the 1992 presidential debate). The controversy intensified when the US trade surplus with Mexico turned into a trade deficit shorty after NAFTA was signed and before virtually any of its provisions went into effect. The collapse of the Mexican peso, the shift in trade patterns, and the passage of NAFTA is a good lesson in the difference between correlation and causation. More recently, President Trump made renegotiating NAFTA one of his top priorities, resulting in the USMCA that was passed by both houses of Congress, ratified by both Canda and Mexico last spring, and went into effect in July, 2020.

In the meantime, there are good lessons to be learned here. With over 25 years experience, there has been ample opportunity for follow-up research on the impacts of NAFTA on the economies of the US, Mexico and Canada.

Focus on and describe some of NAFTA’s overall impacts on the U.S., Canadian, and/or Mexican economies, please do so with support from your own research.
