Functional structure with simple structure is similar because the owner is the boss of everyone. An example of the functional structure is a small marketing office, and an example of the simple structure is a local mom and pops restaurant.

The divisional structure is similar with departmentalization since they are both a multi-market. “Divisions are created (or acquired) to serve a market and are given operating control to make decisions appropriate to meeting the needs of that market” (Baack, Reilly, & Minnick, (2014). An example company for the functional structure is General Motors and an example of a departmentalization company is Under Armour.

Machine bureaucracy with centralized mechanistic structure is similar because they both have high values and follow a chain of command. An example company for machine bureaucracy would be Target, and an example of the mechanistic structure would be the military.

A hospital is a perfect example of a company with the professional bureaucracy structure. Organic structure is similar because it requires little routine. They are more flexible and adaptable. An example of this type of structure would be a construction company.

The simple structure is for small companies, and the employees report directly to one manager and that manager reports to the owner. I worked for an electrical construction company. There was the owner, the middle manager (field manager), and myself. The electricians and I reported to the field manager, and he reported to the owner. It was still the strategic apex method; top-down monitoring for internal control with little formalities and flexibility.

The companies both have a CEO at the top of the hierarchy, inside both corporations, there are three separate companies. Johnson and Johnson sell consumer healthcare products, medical devices, and pharmaceutical products. The BIC Corporation sells pens, lighters, and razors. Inside each one the division’s by-products, they each have an executive or senior manager that oversees individual departments including; marketing, sales, accounting, research and development, and manufacturing.

Two companies are Delta Airlines and Baker Hughes Oil Rig Count. Formal and specialized decisions are made at the top levels and then carried out on a mechanical level. Because of the corporation’s size, they are centralized; meaning that organization is high priority and authority is not delegated. The mechanistic structure is vital for the survival of these companies because of the number of employees, different jobs, different skill levels pertaining to particular jobs, environment, competitors, federal and state laws they must keep enforced, and above all profit.

I have chosen a medical office and a law firm. Professional bureaucracy is a group of individuals working within the ethical standards to carry out professional laws and regulations at a high standard under the qualifications of a medical board license or a legal license. If both practices are small businesses, then they would be able to operate under the decentralization and organic management structure. They would be small informal operations, and the employees would report directly to the owner, and the owner would be the individual who makes the decisions within the practice. These operations would still be from top-bottom monitoring and control but less formality and more flexibility.

A company that I feel should employ the simple structure would be small businesses such as dry cleaners. The reason I feel this structure is good for them is because they are a small company with a handful of workers.

The are many kinds of organizations that feature a professional bureaucracy structure but an example of one is a hospital. These structures usually have a complex operating atmosphere.

Under Armour is an example of the divisional form of structure. The company manufactures a variety of apparel such as casual and sports. They also manufacture footwear.

“Adhocracies are largely populated by professionals with high levels of skills and abilities to contribute to the completion of the project” (Baack, Reilly, & Minnick, (2014). An example of the adhocracy form of structure is the military. Just like the adhocracy structure places stresses on participants during the life of the project. Military deployments is a temporary work environment that places stresses on the families while they are separated from their loved ones.

A simple structure organization is one that a small or local business that is run largely by the owner. Baack, Reilly & Minnick (2014) states in a simple structure “almost everyone reports directly to the owner of the business, so the organization chart looks flat and has few if any, reporting layers” (Chapter Three). Hermitage Steakhouse is a small local restaurant where I live and would be suited perfectly to operate under the simple structure method.

Businesses that need standardization in policy and procedures should employ machine bureaucracy. Baack, Reilly & Minnick (2014) write “Machine bureaucracies work best in large organizations such as manufacturing or service, where high volumes are produced, resulting in a routine” (Chapter Three). Perma-Pipe is large corporation near where I live that manufactures joint pipe fittings and inner pipe linings. The business product line is simple and standardized in a stable environment.

A business that employs highly educated or skilled persons should use the professional bureaucracy structure. “In this type of structure, professionals self-impose standardization and formalization, often in compliance with govern­ing bodies (e.g., licensing agencies, professional associations, or both) and typically due to the complex operating environment” (Baack, Reilly & Minnick, 2014, Chapter Three). It is critical that businesses who offer medical treatment have standardization that is governed but also self-imposed.

Bridgestone Tire Company a divisional business that is headquartered and operates manufacturing facilities in my hometown. Bridgestone uses a vast amount of robotic technology and manual labor to construct tires. “The divisional structure is a set of autonomous units, each typically a machine bureau­cracy unto itself, coordinated by a central headquarters” (Baack, Reilly & Minnick, 2014, Chapter Three). Being that Bridgestone passes down to their plants what product to produce in each division, they fall under the divisional structure.

A friend of mine owns a construction company called Fortune builders. The business uses skilled labor to build homes and office buildings. Baack, Reilly & Minnick (2014) write “Adhocracies are largely populated by professionals with high levels of skills and abilities to contribute to the completion of the project” (Chapter Three). The business uses short-term collaboration to complete each project promptly and to specifications. Being Fortune uses many workers and mixes them on each project it is crucial the company utilizes the adhocracy structure.
