Patient Abuse & Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities
We now look at a dark place in health care. Patient abuse. There are the obvious types of abuse involving physical or emotional harm and financial harm.
There are also instances where the ethics of the patient and the ethics of the caregiver do not match up.
The issues of abortion are difficult to align. Opt Out was developed as a way to ensure care is given while allowing those whose ethics demanded could “opt out” of participating.
This gets complicated when we who is participating in an abortion. It is easy to see those in a surgical suite as participating? What about the pharmacist who hands over the medications? What about the wheelchair porter? What about the receptionist at the hospital desk?
What about if the woman is in danger of dying? Are health care givers still allowed to opt out in such a situation?
What if the woman needs blood? Should a person whose religious ethics deny use of blood products be able to opt out?
This whole semester you have been challenged! We each will come to different decisions at different times in different circumstances, but the concepts of ethics and our professional Codes of Ethics can help us sort out how to care for our patients.
We also take a look at an ethical situation outside of health care to help us see these concepts of ethics and legal issues have use in other issues.
AND, we look ahead a bit–what happens as we develop new technologies in health care?

Look in the popular press for an example of patient/client abuse from a health care professional and include a description of the ethical and legal violations that occurred.
Your description of the case should refer to an individual, group, or organization/institution, who is/are responsible for the abuse/neglect.
How would you address the problem to ensure it did not occur again?
Your posting should not simply be an opinion, but should reflect what you have learned from the readings.

Consider the implications of the expanded used of the concept of “opt out” and its possible result of neglect in the pharmacy world or other circumstances.

Take an example from another profession (ex. criminal justice, psychology, nutrition, etc.) where a citizen/patient/client refuses to accept a recommendation that would benefit them. How would you respond, in your role as a police officer, psychologist, nutritionist, etc., knowing that a refusal could likely harm the individual? Should you challenge the refusal? (You should take into account the basic concepts of ethics AND the profession’s code of ethics, practice law, state regulations).

Does your electronic FITBIT gather data on your health and activities?

With whom does the company share this data?
Will this lead to employers knowing about our activities?
