Chain of Infection
Chain of InfectionSubscribe
In this week’s lecture we discussed the chain of infection. As nurses, you all will see many different patients that have contracted different infectious diseases in different ways. For this week’s discussion I want you to create a scenario where someone has contracted a disease and I want you to name the different parts of the chain of infection that happened in your scenario.
For example, let’s say Suzie Smith came in with the flu. So the name of the pathogen is the influenza virus (there are multiple strains of the flu but I am just speaking in general terms here). Typically we do not know the exact reservoir as it could have been many things. But for the purpose of telling we will say Suzie sat next to a boy at school that had the flu. Therefore, the boy and everything he touched was the reservoir. The portal of exit would be through the boys coughing or sneezing. The mode of transmission would be if Suzie shook the boys hand or touched something behind him. If Suzie soon wiped her nose or mouth, that is the portal of entry. This now makes Suzie the susceptible host. So this is a short scenario but I want you all to come up with something similar. Remember that some diseases are spread in different ways.
As usual, the more info, the better. Please feel free to research some information online about these diseases but please remember to then put your research into your own words.
