• One of the recurrent themes of the course has been the constant tension between the idea of a unified national culture in Canada and the idea of fragmentation. What are some of the strategies the state and others have used to construct a unified culture in Canada, and what are some of the ways this has been resisted?
• In this class, we address different forms of memory and political issues around what we remember and how we remember certain things. Making reference to memorials, tourism, and the national subject, please talk about some of these tensions around memory.

These instructions are for the assignments titled Media Reflection. Throughout the semester, you will be asked to complete a total of three Media Reflections. The first of these 3 assignments is due Friday, 9/25 at 11:59pm. The other two assignments are due 10/23 and 11/20.

The Media Reflection assignment is designed to assess your knowledge of a media effects topic by having you reflect on how that particular topic is related to your own life experiences. Essentially, you are being asked to choose a topic covered in class and then write about how that topic is personally relevant to you.

You will write answers to a series of 4 questions. Your responses to each question should be very detailed and thorough. How long should your written responses be? A high-quality response will be approximately a half page for each question. This means the total length for all 4 questions combined would be about 2 full pages. You might consider writing one or two lengthy paragraphs for each of the 4 questions. Be as detailed as needed to demonstrate that you have a deep understanding of the topic.

Here are the four questions you will need to answer:

1. Think back to the lectures, research article readings, and textbook chapters covered so far in the course. Identify one important concept, research finding, theory, or idea that you found interesting. For example, you might choose a media effects theory such as Cultivation Theory. Or you might choose a research finding such as one of the ones reported in the study conducted by Dr. Denes and Dr. McGloin. Any other research study mentioned in the textbook could be used as well. Or you might choose a specific concept discussed in lecture such as how media tends to trigger imitative behaviors among the audience. Or how media can have a profound impact on the viewer’s emotional state. Once you have chosen your topic, describe the topic in detail. If you have chosen to focus on a specific concept, you might start your response by providing a formal definition of the concept. Or if you chose to focus on a research finding, you might take the time to describe the study and discuss what the researchers found. Make sure that you fully explain the concept, theory, or research finding in this section. Your goal is to demonstrate that you understand what you are talking about on a deep level.
2. Why do you believe that this concept, research finding, theory, or idea is important to consider? Why should people care about the topic you have chosen? Is it related to an important problem in society (like racism, or public health, or something else)? Your goal here is to convince the reader that the topic you chose to discuss is an important one. For example, the fact that media can make viewers imitate behaviors they see on television is important because viewers might try out something dangerous or illegal in the real world. Why is your topic important?
3. Apply this concept/theory/research finding/idea to some aspect of your own life. Reflect on your own relationship with the media. This could include television, movies, songs, video games, advertisements, etc. Consider how this course content may have informed or raised questions about some aspect of your own media usage. For example, have you had any revelations about how media has affected you or someone in your life? What new thoughts has this concept raised for you about your own media use or media effects exerted on you? You might consider telling a brief story about how you or a friend were influenced my something on television or in the news.
4. Now is the time to begin thinking critically. In your opinion, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the theory, research finding, or concept? What is your personal evaluation of it? What questions do you have after thinking about it? What are you still wondering about? Do you have questions about how a piece of research was conducted, how some theory has advanced, or how we should make sense of the findings of some research? For example, you might wonder whether a research study that was conducted in the United States would replicate if conducted in a different country. Perhaps there are cultural differences you can think of that make you question the generalizability of the findings. Or perhaps you have an understanding of how online dating apps affect the lives of college-aged people, but you are curious about how online dating apps affect older people your parents’ age. Come up with as many questions as needed to demonstrate that you have spent time thinking about this topic critically.

Evaluation

There are no right or wrong answers, but your grade depends on the depth and thoroughness of your reflection. You must demonstrate that you have applied critical thinking skills to the topic at hand with related examples from your textbook, class lectures, and your own personal life. The effectiveness of your reflection will be based on your ability to address the points listed above in a thoughtful, creative, and well-constructed manner.
