activities; documentation must be provided to the instructor. Missed work should be submitted as soon as is
practicable. If a student knows they will have an excused absence on the day of a deadline, the student is strongly
advised to submit the work before the deadline. Failure to submit a research paper will result in a failing grade.

Rough Draft Paper – Due Date: March 7, 2022 (no later than 11:59pm)
Typewritten paper must be uploaded to “Canvas” as a PDF document, consisting of 3 to 4 pages on Research Paper
topic selected. Rough draft will be critiqued to assist student when submitting final research paper. A paper received
/ uploaded electronically after due date of March 7, 2022 (11:59pm), is considered late; 5 points are deducted per
calendar day (not per class session) paper is late. Failure to submit a rough draft paper results in 0 points earned.

Research Paper – Due Date: April 25, 2022 (no later than 11:59pm)
2000-word paper (7 to 8 pages) on a violent or serious crime topic (related to class topics) you consider the most
important in America today. Unacceptable topics: single case studies, book reviews, white-collar crime, computer
crime, non-crime related topics. Make sure to cover the following in your paper:
• why you consider topic to be most important today, include a historical perspective, if necessary
• use various sources data to support your viewpoint/argument; include local data / information
• give what you see as possible solution(s) to the problem
• utilize at least 5 different types of resources
Upper Division General Education Writing Requirements
• Every upper division General Education course requires a minimum of 2,000 words of writing in original student
text. “2,000 words” translates into approximately 7 to 8 double-spaced typed pages (250-300 words per page),
varying with margins and size and style of font.

The typewritten paper must be uploaded to “Canvas” as a PDF document, maximum 12pt. black color font, double
spaced, properly documented in APA or MLA style (research online style requirements if not familiar with the APA or
MLA formats); formatted with one-inch margins, spell-checked, grammar checked, with “word count,” take note that
reference/source page and/or attachments do not count towards word count. A paper received / uploaded
electronically after April 25, 2022 (11:59pm) is considered late; and 10 points are deducted per calendar day (not per
class session) the paper is late. Not submitting a research paper will result in 0 points earned and failing the class.
