Part I.

Minimum wage workers often report feeling invisible. Where do you encounter minimum wage workers? What sorts of services do they provide? Have you ever worked in a low-wage job? If so, what was your experience?

Part II.

After reading the article, answer the following questions:

1. Why do you think low-wage workers are reluctant to form labor organizations as Ehrenreich discovered at Wal-Mart? How do you think employees should lobby to improve working conditions?

2. Ehrenreich found that she could not survive on $7.00 per hour — not if she wanted to live indoors. Consider how her experiment would have played out in your community: Find out what the minimum wage of your state is and limiting yourself to that hourly wage, create a hypothetical monthly budget for your part of the country. Is it possible to live off of that income? What does it mean in our society to “live comfortably”?

You know from your prior experience that moving to lean manufacturing (or demand-based manufacturing) can generate not only profitability improvements but also improvements in asset requirements (inventory reduction). Based on this, you wanted to let the Global Supply Chain Manager and her purchasing department know about the kind of inventory savings that might be achievable.

She is already familiar with the classic EOQ formula, of

Q= v2CD / H

Where
C = cost of issuing a new purchase order or cost of a changeover in the manufacturing plant;
D = demand per period; and
H = carrying cost of inventory

To assess the expected level of average inventory, the formula is

Average inventory = Q / 2

where Q = EOQ from the EOQ formula.

In a traditional forecast-driven manufacturing operation, assume the following:

• Monthly sales or demand = 1,000 units
• Changeover cost = $500
• Inventory carrying cost = 30% of inventory cost
• Average cost per unit of inventory = $10

Let the Global Supply Chain Manager and her purchasing department know the following:

1. In a traditional forecast driven manufacturing operation,
   • What would be the EOQ?
   • What would be the average inventory level in units, and in dollars?
2. In a demand-based, synchronous manufacturing operation, assume C = $10, with the changeover time reductions seen in synchronous manufacturing.
   • What would be the new EOQ?
   • What would be the new average inventory level in units, and in dollars?
3. Assuming the carrying cost of inventory is 30%, what is the dollar savings in inventory needed?
4. What conclusions can you reach about the impact on the company’s overall ROI when switching to demand-based, synchronous manufacturing?

Review the discussion of the WHO prerequisites of health:
peace, shelter, education, food, income, a stable ecosystem, social justice,
and equity. Select the prerequisite that most closely aligns with social issues
you are concerned about – whether that is homelessness, children going to

Write a java program that will produce the output formatted as shown in the posted pdf “p3-results.pdf” (results for the run with 2000.txt). I have provided two data files to test with. The program will prompt user with a joption pane dialog box to enter the name of the file to run. Note that your name is to appear in the title bar, and there is no icon.

You are to read the file only one time when you run the program. Use File Reader/BufferedReader.

Do not use any error handling (no try/catch statements). Specifically, if an incorrect file name is entered the program should crash.

The records in each of the test files contain information other than the names. The only thing you are interested in is the names, so disregard everything else.

The layout and formatting of the output is to be exactly the same as the example provided including the dash lines at the top and bottom, and between the different sections of the report, as well as the headings.

The sections are:
