One of the most important parts of working with parents (or being a parent) is finding appropriate resources about a specific topic. Each of you will pick a topic to find 5 resources to share with families. Three of the five resources must be focused on children Birth-6. You should have already selected your topic during Module 5 (if you didn’t email me and I will assign you a topic).

The purpose of this assignment is to start building your own resource list of services you may want to share with the families you work and interact with. One of the most important tasks when working with families is providing them resources for the many challenges, concerns, and questions parents may have.

You will start your assignment by writing up a short vignette about a mock family who is interested in gaining resources about the topic you have selected. There isn’t a minimum amount of words for your vignette you just need to give enough information to direct your search for resources and for me to understand your thought process.

A successful assignment will have resources that have been well researched for relevance, quality, and have all the important information that a parent might want about that resource. If you are unsure about the quality of your resources, see if it meets the CRAP test. There is no “correct” answer, but there should be enough information that a family knows exactly what resource you are sharing and how they can access it themselves. There is no page requirement, but you must have at least 5 resources with 3 being specific to children birth to six years. Finally, any discriminatory language or themes will result in lost points. See below for formatting suggestions. You must use Times New Roman and size 12 font.

Formatting

Remember to use 1-inch margins and 12-point Times New Roman or Calibri font. Aside from your name/information at the top of the page, your extra credit codebook, and block quotes (if you use them), the paper should be double spaced. Please refer to the Final Paper.docx example.

Remember that you can use Google programs in place of Office programs! But also remember that you can get Office for free through UCI!

Ethics and User Privacy

Although the data you are working with is publicly available, my personal preference is still to provide some privacy to the people are you studying. If you are including a quote from the subreddit in your paper, try to reword it slightly (this is still paraphrasing, but it is being done for a different reason than the paraphrasing you are doing with your literature review). If you need to refer to a specific user, give them a pseudonym (even though they are already using one).

Editing Your Paper

As you edit, make sure to refer to “An Important Note on Paraphrasing” and “Notes on Literature Review and Research” while you work on your literature review section. Another helpful page is Multiple Articles, Multiple Authors, and the “et al.” Rule.

In terms of some writing conventions:

• Numbers one through ten are written out with letters, while 11 and up use numerals
• Paragraphs should be indented and should be 4-8 sentences long (and nowhere near a full page)

You should include the following sections (with headings):

• Introduction (1/2 to 1 page)
  • Cite any information that is not your own original thought!
• Literature Review (1/4 to 1/2 page)
  • Use 3-5 peer-reviewed academic articles (Links to an external site.)
  • Make sure to cite! Please use any citation format you would like.
• Methods (1/4 to 1/2 page)
  • How you collected the data/from where
  • Why you made the decisions you made
  • What programs you used for what analyses (this can include word processing documents)
• Findings and Analysis (3 pages – one per theme)
  • Subsections for themes, which are the patterns you have identified in the data (try to divide space as evenly as possible)
• Conclusion (1/2 to 1 page)
  • Discuss the broad important points the reader should walk away knowing, but add information on:

In this final assignment, we will be aiming for a more professional audience, so we want to keep darker colors to a minimum and avoid cluttered backgrounds (e.g., backgrounds that are images)

You should have:

• A title slide
• At least one slide for your introduction
• At least one slide for your literature review
• At least one slide for your methods
• A findings and analysis section with at least one slide per “theme” (or pattern) that you have found in your data
  • Some visualization or example of each theme (whether that is a chart, graph, image, or quote)
• At least one slide for your conclusion
• A reference slide

Review photographic categories from the chapter in the text. We also talked about them in class this week. The categories would include portraits, snapshots, events, landscapes, citiscapes, photojournalism, abstraction. Using your cell phone or iPad take a photograph corresponding to five of these categories.

Present your photographs in a Powerpoint with an explanation of how each one relates to the relevant category.

Students will research the work of Duane Michals and emulate his storytelling method of

photography. Michals uses the camera to tell stories and to dig deep into the human experience.

The use of visual narrative is evident in the art of all cultures throughout history.

1. After researching Michals work. Invent your own story.

2. Like a comic book or a movie, think about images that would depict your story. Your story should be at least eight to ten images with accompanying text to tell the story.

3. Make this a fun project but also a thought provoking project.

4. Get your friends and family to assist you.

Scenario I: Employment Law

Carole Smith, an Apostolic Christian, worked as sales associate at Nickels Department Store. One afternoon, during a break, Smith participated in a conversation about God, homosexuality, and same-sex marriages. The next day, an employee told the manager that Smith made inappropriate comments about gays to Casey, a Nickels employee who was gay. Over the next five weeks, Nickels investigated the incident by interviewing and obtaining statements from employees who were present during the conversation. In his statement, Casey reported that Smith pointed her finger and said that God does not accept gays, that gays should not be allowed to marry or have children, and that they will burn in hell. Three employees confirmed Smith’s statements.

Nickels terminated Smith’s employment after concluding she had engaged in serious harassment in violation of its Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Policy. This policy, of which Smith was aware, prohibits employees from engaging in conduct that could reasonably be interpreted as harassment based on an individual’s status, including sexual orientation, and provides that employees who violate the policy will receive “coaching and/or other discipline, up to and including termination.” Nickels has “zero tolerance” for harassment “regardless of whether such conduct rises to the level of unlawful discrimination or harassment” and treats serious harassment as gross misconduct and grounds for immediate termination.

Agency, Employment and Torts

Brenda Byars, on her way to a business meeting and in a hurry, stopped at a Radio Shack to pick up a new car charger for her smartphone. There was a long line at one of the checkout counters, but a cashier, Phyllis Richmond, opened another counter and began loading the cash drawer. Byars told Richmond that she was in a hurry and asked Richmond to work faster. Instead, Richmond slowed her pace. At this point, Byars hit Richmond.

It is not clear whether Byars hit Richmond intentionally or, in an attempt to retrieve the car charger, hit her inadvertently. In response, Richmond grabbed Byars by the hair and hit her repeatedly in the back of the head, while Byars screamed for help. Management personnel separated the two women and questioned them about the incident. Richmond was terminated immediately for violating the store’s no-fighting policy. Byars sued Radio Shack, alleging that the store was liable for the tort (assault and battery) committed by its employee.
