Religious News is giving you the opportunity to give your readers a deeper glimpse into your thoughts. Your boss has tasked you with creating a PowerPoint presentation detailing some things you have learned about the religious practices in Oceania. You recall the scenario below while creating your presentation.

You discover that a religious group has begun on the other side of town in which you are staying. You begin attending some of their worship sessions and find that the people are quite welcoming. After attending a few sessions, they invite you to live within the community they have established. It sounds like a great opportunity, and you begin to consider the offer.

While talking with your neighbor, who attends church regularly, about the new religious group, she informs you that this group is most likely a cult. She has witnessed the members beginning to build large walls around their compound and bring in supplies, specifically weapons, on regular accounts. She also points out that this group resembles a cult, based on her knowledge of previous incidents.

She concludes by cautioning you against moving into the newly formed community, noting that cults tend to have vary drastic views and practices compared to other religions. You assure her you will take her cautions to heart while making your decision. In the end though, will you join the cult?

For your presentation, you must include the following components:

• Create a chart to compare and contrast the view of sacred items, practices, or areas of Oceanic cults compared to that of one religion discussed so far in this course.
• Create a bulleted list of assessing why members of religious groups can be divided on new beliefs or topics.
• Explain the values and practices surrounding cults.
• Justify your chosen action based on the provided scenario.

Your presentation must be a minimum of five slides, not counting the title slide and reference slide. Remember to title each slide and include an introductory sentence per slide. You do not need to utilize the notes section or audio for this presentation. Include at least one image in your presentation. Prior to completing this journal assignment, please read Chapter 1: Setting the Stage: Counseling Process, Chapter 2: Strategies to Assist Client in Self-Exploration, and Chapter 3: A Few Mistaken Assumptions in Meier and Davis (2018), as well as Chapter 24: Principles of Health Behavior Measurement in Hilliard, Riekert, Ockene, and Pbert (2018). Be sure to also read Dollarhide, Shavers, Baker, Dagg, and Taylor (2012) “Conditions that Create Therapeutic Connection: A Phenomenological Study“ and any relevant Instructor Guidance.

In a journal entry of 500-1000 words, create a brief transcript of your first session with the fictitious client you created in the (((“Client Avatar” )))discussion. In your transcript, demonstrate how you would utilize reflection, paraphrasing, silence, and minimal encouragers to build rapport with the client. Be sure to notate who is speaking in bold font similar to the examples in Meier and Davis (2018). Once you have created your transcript, reflect on what it was like to apply basic counseling skills. Explain why it is important to pace and lead the client, address assumptions, and plan for termination in the initial session. Support your response with information from the Dollarhide, Shavers, Baker, Dagg, and Taylor (2012) article.

Next, identify at least one Health Behavior Measurement from Chapter 24 in Hilliard, Riekert, Ockene, and Pbert (2018) that you would use to gather information about the client’s overall health and wellness. Describe the format and state whether the assessment would result in the client becoming defensive or facilitate self-exploration. Finally, evaluate the appropriateness of the assessment from a cultural perspective, and explain how you would share the results with the client.

Managers and Leaders

The terms “management” and “leadership” are often used interchangeably, yet there are tremendous differences between the two. Jennings and associates (2007) analyze this sentiment by describing a different set of unique competencies native to each role. In short, “managing” is primarily focused on the functionality of an organization while “leading” is concerned with inspiring action (Williamson, 2017). Bridges (2018) aptly condenses this chasm by summarizing that leaders “lead people” while managers “manage things.” In this discussion post, I analyze the nuances between leadership and management by describing two anonymous individuals who best exemplify these roles.

Same Goal, Different Method

Though managers and leaders have different roles, their purpose is the same: to achieve goals. Leaders are more closely associated with influence and inspiration while managers are associated with tasks and activities. Though both roles are separate entities, they are interdependent of each other- and enhance each other- in the pursuit of achieving goals. In other words, inspiration makes the pursuit of tasks more fulfilling while assigning tasks to the inspired while granting shape and direction to an organizational vision.

An Example of a Leader

One of the greatest leaders I have ever encountered is a religious mentor (whom will be called “Pastor.”) Pastor was responsible for leading and facilitating the activities of a particular ministry, ensuring the growth and direction of its members was in alignment to the organization’s beliefs. What made this individual a great leader was their selfless passion and model behavior- their fervency to the faith inspired adherents to action and excellence. Though Pastor’s leadership qualities were strong, what this individual lacked was management capability; this individual was charmingly disorganized, clumsy, and bumbling. Often, plans would be poorly executed, details would be neglected, important dates and times would be forgotten, sometimes resulting in logistical catastrophes of biblical proportions.

An Example of a Manager

Meticulous attention to detail, incredible time management skills, and a laser-like focus to tasks are the hallmark characteristics of “Manager.” The Manager was responsible for managing a specific department of a large organization. Whether day-to-day tasks or large projects, Manager excelled by ensuring all the activities of the group were being completed. Large organizations have a lot of moving parts and Manager was responsible to form order out of the chaos. With any organization, conflict is bound to arise but one of the greatest talents that Manager exhibited is problem-solving. In all things, Manager was methodical, calculated, and precise, but perhaps to a fault. One of the things that Manager was not known for was empathy. It was not uncommon for Manager to make difficult, pragmatic decisions that are seemingly ruthless- without batting an eye. If it meant securing the operations of the organization, seldom did Manager regard the feelings of their underlings and operated in somewhat of a robotic fashion. In short, though Manager was a massive force of productivity, Manager incited more fear than inspiration.

Conclusion

Though leadership and management are titles that are sometimes used synonymously, there are major differences that serve the same purpose: managers lead “things” while leaders lead “people” (Bridges, 2008). As we have seen in these two examples, leaders are marked by their ability to inspire and motivate while managers are more concerned with ensuring the completion of tasks. Though there are stark differences in function, both roles seek to achieve the same purpose: to achieve the goals of an organization.
