Lesson 1: Water and Life on Other Planets

In this project, you will research the physical and chemical properties of water, discover its role in living things, and explore the environments of nearby planets in our solar system to evaluate whether liquid water can exist.

In this lesson, you will review the scientific method and some of the physical and chemical properties of water. Then you’ll consider the role of a chemist on an astrobiology team that has been assigned to evaluate the possibility of liquid water existing on other planets or moons in our solar system.

Project Scenario
Imagine that you are a chemist on an astrobiology research team. Your team is writing a research proposal to obtain money for designing, building, launching, and operating an interplanetary probe to search for water on one of the planets or moons in our solar system. But to which one should you send your probe? You have been asked to evaluate which planets or moons in our solar system might have liquid water.

Report Guidelines
Write a 2–4 page report (approximately 600–1,200 words) that outlines your recommendation. Your report and recommendation will be essential in decision making and will guide the development of the project. Because potential investors in the project are not scientists, you must discuss basic chemistry information in a manner that they can understand.

Report Format
Report should be 2–4 pages of text, double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman. Graphics and tables may be added as needed.

*Your report should address the following details:*

1. What is the molecular structure of water? What are the physical and chemical properties of water?
2. How does the structure of water explain the physical and chemical properties of water?
3. How does each property of water relate to or affect living things?
4. What are the environmental conditions on the following planets and moons (for example, temperature, pressure, gravities, and atmospheres)?

   • Mercury
   • Venus
   • Earth’s moon
   • Mars
   • Jupiter
   • Jupiter’s moon Europa
   • Jupiter’s moon Ganymede
   • Saturn
   • Pluto (a plutoid, or type of dwarf planet)

5. Discuss whether each planet or moon could support liquid water. Justify your answer (yes or no) with evidence about water’s properties and the conditions of the planet or moon. Compare with earth if necessary.
6. Choose one planet or moon as your recommendation for the probe’s destination. Explain what the advantages and disadvantages would be for sending a probe to this destination.

Financial reports tell the story of an organization within a fiscal year. Annual financial reports are extremely valuable to government organizations because they give both the administrators in the organization and the public who are funding the organization a sense of where revenue is going.

In this Discussion, you analyze an organization’s comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) and explain its value to the organization.

Review this week’s Learning Resources and reflect on the responsibility of government organizations to provide accurate financial reports to the public. Then, select a public organization and a specific CAFR from the selected organization. Public organization budgets are required by law to be available. An Internet search will yield an annual budget for your specific organization.

On a popular route, an airline offers two classes of service: business class (B) and economy
class (E). The respective demands are given by:

Because of ticketing restrictions, business travelers cannot take advantage of economy’s low
fares. The airline operates two flights daily. Each flight has a capacity of 200 passengers. The
cost to the airline per flight is $20,000. The airline seeks to maximize total revenue.

Create a spreadsheet that can solve for the optimal number of each type of ticket the airline
should sell. Your spreadsheet should include revenue and marginal revenue for each type of
ticket, total revenue, marginal cost, total cost, and profit. Your only choice variables should
be the number of business class tickets and the number of economy class tickets. All other
values (aside from the seats per plane and total cost per trip) should be computed based on
your choice variable.

1. By hand, solve for the fares the airline charge should charge to maximize revenue. How
   many passengers will buy tickets of each type? Check your answer with your spreadsheet
   solver. (Hint: remember that the optimal occurs where marginal cost = marginal benefit,
   MC=MB, and in this case the cost of selling one more economy class ticket is having to
   give up a business class ticket, and vice versa). Also report the total revenue and profit.
2. Suppose the airline is considering promoting a single “value fare” to all passengers on the
   plane. Find the optimal single fare using the spreadsheet solver. (Hint: you can think of
   the ‘single fare’ as an additional constraint.) Also report the total revenue and profit.

Now suppose the airline can vary the number of daily flights, but due to their contract with
the airport they face the cost curve ? = 20000 + 5000?2 where F is the number of flights per
day. Assume the airline uses the optimal fares from part a.

c. By hand, solve for the profit maximizing number of flights. Check your answer with your
solver. Also report the total revenue and profit.
