The Instruction-Assessment Connection
In this application assignment, you will develop assessments to measure phonemic awareness
and create a PowerPoint or other slide presentation to share for professional development.

Course Objective

• Define the relationship between instruction and assessment.

Directions for Submission:

1) Save and print the Module 2 Application PDF.

2) Create a slide presentation for your response. You may use PowerPoint or another slide
presentation tool.

3) Create a references page in APA (6th edition) format. Use APA (6th edition) format for
citations.

Directions for Completion

Step 1. Access the Phonemic Awareness Chart from the assignment page. Complete the
chart by doing the following:

Using a researched recommendation for the progression of phonemic awareness, design an
assessment option for 10 skills. Each assessment should include the age-appropriate level,
the target skill, three examples, components or pieces to the assessment, and a key for
determining accomplishment. Example: Age 4. Recite a rhyme like “Jack and Jill…”
1) Clear articulation of words, 2) Says the rhyme in order, 3) Self-corrects an error.

Step 2. Develop a PowerPoint or other slide presentation with
instructional notes, modeling how each assessment is done and what
information it conveys for instruction. Example: At age 4, reciting a
rhyme conveys a level of listening and repeating, recognizing the order of
words placed in a pattern, and memory skills. slide might show a rhyme
on the left side and what to consider when doing an assessment.

Step 3. Provide documentation in the form of citations for each assessment linked to
research. Use the last slide of the slide presentation for references.

• The first step should be to choose a topic that is of interest to you. Sure, the general topic here is food, but you need to decide what about food is of interest to you. The photo-essay should develop a personal story that represents food cultures, traditions, or memories that are relevant to you.
• After choosing a topic, it is important to perform some background research, which will allow you to determine the key issues. This will be helpful when (a) choosing the photos to tell your story and (b) writing the introductory paragraph.
• Write a draft of your introductory paragraph, which should provide background about the selected food culture, details about why this is important, why this is personally relevant. Your introduction should prepare the reader for the images that are to follow.
• Following the introductory paragraph, include 5–8 photographs (or images) that are displayed clearly and artistically. Each photograph should include one- or two-sentence captions that explain the image and connect it to the main topic your photo-essay.
• Select the software application that you will use to create your photo-essay, such as MS Word or PowerPoint, or other similar software. If you experience challenges, let me know right away.

NOTE: If you are copying photographs from external sources, be sure to cite the source by providing the web address. Although simply providing the web address is not how to properly cite sources, it will be accepted in this assignment because we have covered different methods of citing sources.

Describe the African novelist Chinua Achebe’s theory of the novel as a genre and an art form as elaborated in his essay “An Image of Africa” and then to discuss how his novel Things Fall Apart is a specific example of that particular theory of the novel in action: use specific evidence or elements from Things Fall Apart to show how that work is the kind of novel Achebe believes should be written, based, again, on his essay “An Image of Africa.”

TITLE: Image Formation Using Convex Lenses

INTRODUCTION

This week we’re investigating the formation of images using thin lenses. In particular, we’re focusing on biconvex lenses: lenses that bow outward on both sides. By finding the focal length of each lens directly,

We’ll need the following equations. First, the Thin Lens Equation:

where is the focal length, is the distance from the object to the lens, and is the distance from the lens to the image, and the magnification equations

where is the magnification, is the height of the image, and is the height of the object.

Also – don’t forget, there is a recitation due this week. Please submit it separately in Blackboard, to the appropriate assignment!

RAY TRACING EXERCISE

Check out the video that we posted on Blackboard for ray tracing. It will run through an overview, and help you get started with ray tracing. You can also check the OpenStax textbook for a guide.

Print off the Ray Tracing pdf on Blackboard, following either the rules in the video or the textbook for convex lenses. You’ll want a ruler for this! Work through and ray trace the diagram, then complete the following:

Question 1: Measure the following from your drawing, and fill in the blanks:

Focal length: ________

Object distance: ______

Image distance: _______

Object height: ________

Image height: _________

Question 2: Was the image upright or inverted? How do you know?

Question 3: Calculate the magnification using both equations and calculate the percent difference between them. Were your two magnifications consistent?

DATA ANALYSIS GUIDE

Question 4: To find the focal length of the lenses, I picked a far-away object to create an image, then said that . Using equation 1, show why this works.

In the spreadsheet, you can see the measured focal lengths and my specified values for . Now, go through and calculate for each of them using equation 1.

Question 6: Show one sample calculation for finding here.

Now, it’s time to test those predictions! Here’s an image of the “T”-shaped object being formed on the screen.

Now that the predictions have been tested and reported in column D, calculate the percent difference between your calculated and my measured .

Now we want to find the magnification of the images that were created. From equation 2 we have two methods, so use both! You should use my measured for this, since you’re also using my measured heights.

Question 7: Why are the magnifications all negative?

Now calculate the percent difference between these two methods, and put the results in column J.

Question 9: The percent differences you calculated in this lab probably weren’t 0%. What are some possible sources of error?
