Read “Here is New York” and “Street Haunting: A London Adventure”
This week’s reading journal assignment is a little different. E.B. White and Virginia Woolf are authors known for their turns of phrase. In “Here is New York” and “Street Haunting: A London Adventure” there are so many quotable sentences that are memorable for their insight and elegance of phrasing. Choose any TWO sentences from White’s essay. Quote the sentence–or sentences–and then discuss what you notice and find interesting about it in your own paragraph. Quote the next sentence from White and then do the same reflect on the line(s), what it says, how it makes its point, and what you find interesting about it. Do the same for two different sentences (or slightly longer passages) from Woolf’s essay to analyze and discuss them. I’m having you focus on the writers’ style here, and this may take a little longer than the usual 15 minute freewrite. For each sentence you quote, you should generate a paragraph of your own reflections.
