The concept of integrated marketing communications is more than just putting together good ad campaigns. It is a fully integrated set of promotion mix tools communicating the same clear, consistent, and compelling message about the offering. For example:

• TV ad campaign to create interest in the product using a celebrity spokesperson (advertisingcreating awareness)
• Appearance of the celebrity on a TV talk show (public relations to generate interest)
• E-mail from the celebrity endorser offering a promotional price (direct marketing to spark desireto purchase)
• Point-of-purchase display featuring celebrity endorser (sales promotion to remind consumer of product benefits and encourage purchase action)
• Demonstration by sales clerk (personal selling to close the sale bringing consumer to action)
• Facebook page hosted by the celebrity (post-purchase activity to reduce purchase dissonance)

In this case, the celebrity endorser is the common thread communicating the company’s message. The company may have decided to use a celebrity endorser who is well respected and highly visible to its target market. This is part of the creative strategy for encoding the message to consumers. In other cases, the common thread (sometimes known as the Big Idea) might be a particular graphics approach, a character created solely for the company (e.g. Flo for Progressive Insurance), or other creative device that carries forth in all communications.

Here is a tongue-in-cheek video demonstrating how advertising and public relations were two tools used in an IMC campaign. The message to communicate was how to pronounce a last name. See how this was done using IMC principles.

Can you think of an IMC campaign? Progressive is one example, but there are plenty out there. Feel free to go back in history and think of campaigns like IBM’s launch of the personal computer using the Charlie Chaplin-like character or Coke’s I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing campaign, or Apple’s IMC campaigns used on every new product launch. Remember, don’t just focus on the advertising. Find those other promotion tools they used to convey the selling proposition. You may want to read most of the week’s readings before tackling this discussion topic to get a better idea of what all the promotion mix tools are, and how the AIDA model (as noted in the reading highlights in the example above) works.

You can use the bulleted example above as your format. Then help your classmates as you read their posts and add to those examples with other communications you may have seen that were not covered.

Writing About Movies: Arguing with Sources

Assignment: For our finalproject this semester, we will create an extended argument incorporating appropriate source materials in a formal collegiate format. This type of writing is what will be expected of you in your writing assignments in most other undergraduate classes: not only are you expected to be able to understand facts found in outside source materials, but you are expected to discuss what those facts mean and use them to support your own claims—in effect, you create an argument with a thesis statement for any college-level research paper.

Essay Assignment:

You are to generate an essay that is both argumentative and expository in relation to a topic of your development and investigation of the course topic: Writing About Movies.One key is to choose and develop a topic you are actually interested in writing about. In a nutshell, you must choose a film to analyze and write about—just as we’ve been doing all term—,but this time you get to select the film and use secondary sources to develop and support your argument.

Potential Topics (these are film I think will likely work well for this sort of project):

Spike Lee, Do the Right Thing(1989)

The objectives of this course were 1) to help you assess your existing leadership strengths and weaknesses, and 2) to help you develop a plan to address one or more leadership goal(s). The deliverable used to address these objectives is the Leadership Development Project. Below are the requirements for the LDP. The entire project should be no longer than 3 pages double spaced (including the goal setting chart).

Your paper should contain the following sections:

1. Analysis of Strengths and Weaknesses:

• Self-Assessments – In this section you should discuss the results from all of the self assessments you took during the semester (e.g., LTQ). You do not have to mention the results of all of the assessments but you must mention a minimum of six and you should choose those that were most significant or relevant for you; either because you had an exceptionally high or low score, or because it fit with a theme supported by scores from your other assessments or interviews.
• Interviews – In addition to the self assessments you will need to interview two people you have worked with recently (e.g., coworkers, supervisors, former supervisors, etc.) The important thing is to choose people whose opinion you respect and who will give you HONEST feedback. You will ask them to provide you with what they perceive to be your three greatest leadership strengths and three greatest leadership weaknesses, and to provide you with rationale for their choices. Perhaps ask them to give you some examples of when these behaviors have been demonstrated. *DO NOT argue with them or defend yourself, and monitor yourself to make sure you are not angry or defensive. Only ask questions to help you clarify their perspective.
• Strengths/Weaknesses Conclusions – Once you have the interview data and the self assessments you should look for themes or trends. What do you appear to do well as a leader? What do you struggle with? This is the most important section of the LDP because you will choose one or two weaknesses from here to focus on for your “Goal Setting” portion of the project. This is an integrative paper, a summary of what you will take away from the class. Please do not simply list your self-assessment scores. *A short one or two sentences is NOT sufficient for this section.

2. Goal Setting: What changes do you want to make? Based on the conclusions you were able to generate in the previous section regarding weaknesses, create at least one developmental goal for improving your leadership skills, and a plan for achieving that goal. Refer to the previous sections, and think about the things that you learned about yourself that you may have been surprised by or disappointed in. Your goals should be specific, measurable, challenging but attainable, results-oriented, and time-bound. You can use the attached sample as a guideline for creating your developmental plan.

1. Introduction, including a single sentence thesis
