ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Case Study – week 6 – (18%):

You were just hired by a hospital system to help them keep track of their nurses. The hospitals have been depending on a solution put together by their IT department. Their lack of database is hurting the image of the hospitals as they have been unable to properly manage their nurses. They put together a spreadsheet (see below) and they have been using it as a database of sorts.

The following key points have been agreed:
1 Each HospitalID (H-ID) is unique
2 Each Hospital employees many nurses
3 Each nurse can be employed by only one hospital (this may not be practical in today’s environment, but we need to design the system as specified)
4 Each NurseID is unique
5 We will track only one nursing degree for each nurse
6 Consider the domain for each field – the sample data does not represent all valid values
7 No fields beyond those in the spreadsheet are needed (clearly explain the rationale behind including any other field!)

Your objective is to replace the spreadsheet with a relational database. Your submission will consist of a word compatible document, and an Access DB.

The specific tasks are listed below, the percentage in parenthesis corresponds to the grade weight for each task: Organize your Word compatible document to match the tasks below, label each section. Name your document Last Name_CaseStudy (i.e. Smith_CaseStudy). When you are asked to provide an explanation or description, you must include sufficient content to demonstrate that you understand the definition, term, concept, etc. and how it applies to this exercise.

SUGGESTION: Review the topics in the Terms and Concepts Forum. There is also a normalization MP4 file that can be downloaded and viewed in the Resources section.

You must use the following outline in your submission – use the section labels below to separate your responses.

1) Review the existing spreadsheet, and the sample data and document any assumptions (beyond those in the key points) you need to make about the content. (10%)

2) Submit “one” complete functional dependency analysis (all fields must be included at least once), use the functional notation shown on pages 410-413 Examples 14.2, 14.3, 14.4 and 14.5 to document the dependencies. Do not submit functional dependencies for each normal form – only one set of functional dependencies are required.

The notation is: Field A -> Field B, Field C, means that Field A is a determinant for Field B and Field C.
Similarly if a field is dependent on the combination of values of two fields then:
Field X, Field Y -> Field Z

There may be one or more rows of functional dependencies. Consider all potential values for each field when determining dependencies (do not rely solely on the values shown in the below spreadsheet.) Explain one row of the submitted functional dependencies in plain English (one simple way is to use field names and values in this exercise). (20%)

3) Explain the relationship between the tables – consider the multiplicity (one-to-many, many-to-many). (10%)

4) Submit a complete set of 1NF, 2NF, and 3NF tables (ensure you label and identify 1NF, 2NF and 3NF tables). Ensure a complete set of tables (and fields) are included for each normal form (repeat the same table if appropriate, I expect to see a complete set of tables for each normal form level) (30%)

You must use the normalization definitions and process in the Connolly text (or you may use the General Forum definitions and processes – designate which you are using). Use normal form “definitions” to ensure that your set of tables are in 1NF, 2NF and then in 3NF. DO NOT SUBMIT SPREADSHEET BASED TABLES

Include a plain English description to explain why the 1NF tables are in 1NF, why the 2NF tables are in 2NF, and why the set of 3NF tables are in 3NF (you must mix plain English and normal form definitions in your explanation – but do not simply copy the definitions). One approach may be to use fields names and values as examples in your description – i.e. Field A is a determinant for Field B because…

You MUST use the table shorthand representation shown on page 111 (also shown on page 149), which describes the tables found on page 112 of the Connolly text (ensure you underline primary key fields). The notation is:
TableName (Field1Name, Field2Name, Field3Name, etc.) underline primary key field(s).

********5) Create an MS Access database, including the data provided, using only the 3NF tables. Name your database Last Name_CaseStudy (i.e. Smith_CaseStudy). Upload the database to the assignment area as one of the deliverables (5%).
6) Create a Query (In MS Access) that may include one or more tables, as needed, that provides the results for the following request: List each NurseID, their last name, degree, and the H-ID and City where they are employed. Sort the results by NurseID (Ascending) and then by H-ID (Descending values) (5%)
7) Create one Form: New Hospital Input – this form should include all relevant fields needed (In MS Access) (5%)
8) Create One Report: Hospital List – this report should include any relevant fields that you think might be needed (In MS Access) (5%)
9) Content organization, spelling grammar, clarity (10%)

Here is the table notation for the spreadsheet:
Nurse (NurseID, LastName, Degree, H-ID, H-St, H-City, H-Tel)

Below you will find the spreadsheet that the IT department has put together for our use.

Hint: review the Normalization Part 1, Parts and Suppliers One-To-Many, and Parts and Suppliers Many-To-Many topics in the Terms and Concepts Forum – the content may be useful.

Legal Writing Internal Memorandum Business Finance Assignment Help

To refresh your memory of the Ann C. Dorite case, review her interview and your summary of her interview from module 02. For this assignment you just came out of a meeting with the partners of your firm, Susan & Winem. The meeting was short, but its contents were recorded by the partner’s secretary, Betsy M. Akurate, and she states that she will transcribe the meeting and provide a verbatim transcript.

The firm’s partner, Rich N. Moore, asks you to stay after the meeting. He then asks you to write an internal memorandum with two parts. He specifically states that he wants you to submit the memorandum in one Word document to him and he will circulate to the other attorneys.

The first part of the internal memorandum, Mr. Moore tells you, should be a summary of the meeting you just attended. He says Ms. Akurate will email you the transcript of the meeting.

For the second part of the internal memorandum Mr. Moore wants you to read statutes and cases for Ms. Dortie’s case. He is concerned that since the client was walking in the street the city had no legal duty to maintain the streets in a reasonably safe condition.

Partner Moore tells you that the memorandum (i) should be no more than 4 pages as he has no time to read more than 4 pages; (ii) should only discuss the case authority he will give you; (iii) should update the cases and provide him with the citation to the most recent Illinois case on the subject of pedestrian use of roadways with a 1-2 sentence statement of what the rule of law in the case; (iv) should frame the issue in the second half of the memorandum for the Dorite case using the 123 Method; and (v) should provide a list of points and authorities at the end of your memorandum.

Partner Moore’s secretary, Ms. Akurate, then sends you a memo with the following information:

Read as background and include in your list of points and authorities but not discuss in your memoranda the following statutes:

Essay writing and formal outline Writing Assignment Help

The essay I chose from the book is in the attachments

The Assignment: Now that you’ve written argumentative essaysand are familiar with various writingstrategies, you have the skills necessary to write an extended rhetorical analysis. For this assignment, you are to choosean essay from our textbook to analyze. You may not choose an essay we have discussed or used in the past in any way in this class. It must be a new essay to you.

Reason for the Assignment: Although I want you to base your writing on reason, I also want you to have an understanding of how the powers that be—corporations, the government, politicians, pundits, commercials on TV and radio—seek to manipulate us largely through their use of word choice, sentence construction, and logical fallacies. As an educated person, you need to be aware of when this is happening to you.

Things to Consider When Making Your Evaluation:

1. Who is the “author?” What is his/her background, education, and expertise?

2. What is the author’s thesis/claim? Is it explicit or implicit?

3. To whom was this essaywritten—its target audience? its ideal audience?

4. Does the author try to establish common ground with his/her audience?

5. What is the author’s tone? Does it change without the article? If so, be able to explain the changes in tone.

6. What writing strategies were used? Does the essay make use of emotional, ethical, logical appeals, and/or counter arguments and refutation? Which of these strategies was emphasized? Why you think this emphasis was chosen?

7. Does the author make a convincing case? Why or why not?

8. How is the article framed?

9. Can you locate and identify any logical fallacies by name or particular weaknesses?

10. Why do you think these fallacies were used?

11. Additionally, notice the authors use of:

a) The Passive Voice: When you don’t want to take responsibility for a crime, you can say “Crimes werecommitted” instead of “I committed a crime” thus suggesting that you had nothing to do with what actually happened. A war was started, book-keeping errors were made, a test was failed, bribes were taken—these passive constructions minimize the role of any one person.

b) Euphemisms: “A word or phrase used in place of a term that might be considered too direct, harsh, unpleasant or offensive” (Encarta World English Dictionary). Often we use euphemisms to be polite when describing bodily functions, sex or other activities that may make us uncomfortable— “Ladies’ Room,” “passing on” instead of “dying,” “attacked” instead of “raped” and so on. However, sometimes euphemisms are used to obfuscate and confuse, to hide what is really going on.

Writing the Essay: Once you have answered all these questionsin the first part of the writing process for this assignment, you will then need to work on the focus ofyour essay and how to include the information you have come up with. Remember, youare trying to evaluate someone else’s work, so you will be looking for strengths andweaknesses.

*You should not focus on whether you agree with the author’s position. You must focus instead on how skillfully the author makes his/her argument.

This essaycannot simply be a cataloguing, list of good and bad points. The trick in writing thispaper will be to have a strong focus, which will guide you as you write. You should do as much preparation as you can: reading and evaluating the argument, prewriting and preparing a rough draft.

Organization of the Essay:

Introduction

Attention grabber: Draw me into the topic of the essay you are critiquing. Make me care.

Introduction of the essay you are critiquing: give the title and state the author’s name.

Your thesis statement: Identify whether you believe the essay you are critiquing is effective or ineffective (or both) and offer some main reasons why you believe this.

Plan of Development: Briefly introduce the topics that you will cover in this paper (tone, evidence, etc.) and your view of them. This should be provide a clear map of your essay.

Body of the Essay Section One

The thesis of the argument/essay you are evaluating. State whether it is implicit or explicit.

Prove that the thesis you have asserted is really the thesis of the essay.

Body of the Essay Section Two

Who is the intended audience? Give proof from the text. There should direct quotes in body paragraph.

Who is the ideal audience?

What does the writer hope the audience will do?

Body of the Essay Section Three

What common values/concerns does the author include would be shared with the ideal audience (common ground)? Make sure you provide proof from the essay.

Body of the Essay Section Four

Identify and trace the author’s tone about the events and people in the essay. Show the shifting of tone by identifying each. Provide examples to demonstrate what you mean.

What effect do these shifts have on the reader?

Body of the Essay Section Five

Discuss the author’s use of pathos, emotional appeals and ethos, appeals to authority (credibility). Be sure to comment on his/her word choices.

Does the writer use euphemisms? If so, explain their use. What is their intended affect on the essay’s readers?

Discuss the type of logical support the author uses (experts, statistics, studies, etc.).

Evaluate the writer’s logic. Do you notice any logical fallacies in the writer’s arguments?

Conclusion

Restate the author’s purpose: thesis and what he or she hopes the audience will do after completing the article.

Restate (reword) your thesis: summarize your evaluation of the essay.

week 3 discussion 2 RESPONSE j.t. Writing Assignment Help

In your responses, review at least one of the articles provided by your peer and expand on their description. Each participation post should be a minimum of 75 words.

  • Explain at least five differences between popular and scholarly sources used in research.

Popular sources that are used in research can be helpful but sometimes not a good idea to use or rely on heavily Popular sources are usually found in non-academic journals, newspapers, and blogs. They do not usually have any resources cited in or after the work and there typically are written in basic language that is meant to entertain more than inform like scholarly sources. There are also advertisements included in the journal or paper, whereas scholarly sources do not include advertisements and will have references listed and citations used within the article/paper. Scholarly sources main function is to inform and present research. Most authors are of scholarly sources will be accredited or professionals in the field of which they are conduction research and the style or language used will be more technical than the popular sources. The scholarly sources are typically reviewed not more entertainment purposes but for reliability by the authors peers to ensure that the material is accurate and worth publishing. Scholarly sources will also include an abstract as well as the data presented, testing procedures and the results found through the testing to support the findings.

  • Locate and summarize one peer-reviewed, scholarly source from the Ashford University Library and one popular source that pertain to your Final Argumentative Essay topic. In your summary of each article, comment on the following: biases, reliability, strengths, and limitations.

Empowering Girlz to Pursue STEM is an article of a popular source. This is a short article that was published on Business Wire website originally. This article is about a non-profit outreach conference that is hosted by Tech Sassy Girlz that is pressing for the need to promote females in STEM fields. This conference is working to show girls across all races the wonder of technology and that they can enter these fields. This is a biased article but with a valid point behind the bias. This is geared toward females and enticing them to the STEM programs. The information is reliable as the organization that is posting it is the same organization that is hosting the event. They are not many strengths to this article as it is short, and that is also a limitation factor, but they do have information about the conference and key speakers listed.

The second article Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is a scholarly article with references and an abstract. This article links to a study that was conducted that considers why women are underrepresented in the STEM fields. There are nine topics contained in the report and recommendations that are made for each topic. The strengths and reliability in this article is the linking to the full report to the article which includes graphs, statistics, pie charts, etc.… the limitations that are in the article is that it is so short and doesn’t show an overview of the results on the study. I don’t feel that this article is biased, but it may seem that way to anyone that doesn’t look at the data provided. This is geared toward why there are so few women in the fields, this is not a bias, but a fact.

  • From the sources you summarized, list and explain at least five visual cues from the peer-reviewed, scholarly source that were not evident in the popular source.

There were references cited and used as well as an abstract at the beginning of the article. There were no advertisements and this an article that was linked to long report and thorough report. This article was posted on a scholarly journal and was peer reviewed.
