  • One of the things that most affects how we interact with other people is their social identities.  From gender to race to disability status to looks and many other types of social identity, we use social identities as “shortcuts” to tell us how to treat another person.  Even more importantly, the treatment we give other people based on these shortcuts can have major-even devastating–effects, even when the interaction seems fairly minor.

To illustrate how much we base social interaction on the social identities of those we are interacting with (even when we know them well), and how much this interaction really matters, I’d like you to watch a film about a very famous “experiment” 3rd -grade teacher Jane Elliott first undertook with her Iowa students in the 1960s.  In the version you are going to watch, you’ll see this experiment and the students’ behavior depicted, as well as learn what those students, now adults, feel today about what they experienced.

Click on the link below, or alternately, copy and paste it into your browser to play. This video is divided into 10 minute chunks, make sure to watch all of them.

    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/divided/etc/view.html

  • Reflection on A Class Divided

After you have watched the film, please write a response (one page or longer, typed and double-spaced) discussing your reactions to what you saw.  You can share your personal reactions, your questions about what you saw, insights into what this “experiment” teaches us about social construction of reality, social interaction and social identity, social inequality, authority or anything else you’d like to discuss (especially the implication of experiment).

I will grade it based on the thoughtfulness of your analysis and response, including the quality of your sociological insights.

Obama Care, Discussion 1 Response 2 M.H. help Humanities Assignment Help

Respond, add, disagree, agree to this post in 50 words or more and use examples from the pdf and references attached. Cite within your answer like so: (Mosser, 2013, ch 1.6, para 11).

Obama Care (otherwise known as the Affordable Care Act or ACA) has been a very controversial law. Me personally I don’t have an opinion about it either way so I’m on the fence.  Looking at a moral reason on why this health care act is great is there is a story about a woman denied healthcare after being raped, Anderson Cooper the interviewer stated “Christina Turner was drugged and raped by two men in 2009. After taking anti-HIV drugs prescribed by her doctor as a preventative measure, Turner was denied health insurance. The HIV drugs, Turner was told, raised too many health question for her insurer.” The affordable care act is targeted to prevent cases like this from happening. So I guess stories like this make you happy that this now exists.Utilitarianism would be the best way to describe this act for it benefits most and is very useful. some of the great things about it is it is allowing children to stay on their parent’s health insurance until age 26; no lifetime limits on health coverage; and new insurance policies must provide preventive care without any form of cost-sharing. It also provides Health care coverage for uninsured Americans. Through a combination of creating the health insurance marketplace and encouraging the states to expand Medicaid, millions of Americans without health insurance now have access to affordable coverage. Whether someone works part-time or their workplace simply can’t or won’t offer health insurance, their medical needs can be covered. It is also reducing uninsured health events. Taxpayers have always been on the hook for uninsured Americans who end up needing emergency or life-saving health care. These citizens receive the care they need, but can’t afford to pay the bill. The result is that the hospitals take additional government money or simply raise their prices for everyone. Because Obama Care requires citizens to have health coverage, we will dramatically reduce the instances of uninsured health events. The only bad thing I’ve read about it is that Working Americans will pay more. Most middle-class Americans hold full-time jobs and receive health insurance through their employers. Health care costs were rising before the Affordable Care Act became law, and combined with the effects of the law, employers will likely re-evaluate the insurance they offer. As employers attempt to reduce the cost of providing coverage to employees, employed Americans may pay more for their work-based health insurance, and citizens with very high-cost work-based coverage may see their benefits decline to avoid the taxes that these plans will incur beginning in 2018. All in all The Affordable Care Act benefits millions of Americans in need of health insurance. Now that the law has passed, no one can get denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions or limit benefits for that condition. Also coverage for children fewer than 19 cannot be excluded, limited, or denied coverage based upon health conditions or disabilities.

The rise of Islam began in the early 600’s as the Roman Empire, history homework help Humanities Assignment Help

100 words each. Please reply your opinion by those two discussion article. Must be original. Please provide reference if there some source used.

1st Question: What non-religious factors allowed the rise of Islam? How does the view presented here differ from your previous view of Islam?

DISCUSSION: The rise of Islam began in the early 600’s as the Roman Empire and the Persian Empire were once again at war. With all concentration from Rome and Persia on the war, the Islamic people in Syria and Mesopotamia were left alone to cultivate their civilization. As the war ended Rome was victorious due to its miraculous governor HeraculisHeraculis subsidized Arab leaders and reintroduced bishops into Arabic cities which angered many of the Arabic leaders as Heraculis with held subsidies to some leaders and sent military forces to subdue other Arabic city-states. The Arabic leaders were not satisfied with being the vessels the Byzantines used to enforce their new rule over the Syrian Arabs which caused the leaders to conquer Persia and Byzantine Egypt. The Arabic empire became know as the Umayyads after its conquest of the Persian and Roman Empires. Another factor in Islams rise would be the translation of scientific, philosophical, legal, and literary works from Syriac and Persian in Arabic. This caused the spread of schools and libraries from Baghdad to cities all over the region. This growth may not be as visible as that of the conquest of other lands but it is just as important. The people of Islam were  now given the power to learn with all the new ideologies and literary works translated into their language. This led to the Islamic civilization being organized into a commonwealth of dozen of regions under ethnically diverse dynasties.

My view of Islam has changed in many aspects, due to a better understanding of the rise and organization of the Islamic Empire. Although most of Islams culture is dominated by religion, the organization of commonwealths which were independent in most practices allowed for more diversity throughout the dynasties. I also received a better understanding of Islamic beliefs. Reading the chapters i discovered that the Quran (Islams religious book) was similar to the bible in ways but, differ because the Quran brings together small blocks of biblical narratives or statements. Also the Quran is written from God’s word not Muhammad which appears in the Quran a limitiednumber of times.

2nd question: Describe the trade system. What is the trade system most similar to?What is the most surprising thing in the area of trade?Discuss developments in religion, science and the arts.

DISCUSSION: As the populations grew, the demands for other goods and materials grew as well. The rich agriculture trade was already producing great and positive revenue in certain places. Now through the various trade routes and the interaction of the different groups and societies which specialized in producing unique and sought out items and( in some cases slaves from the African rain forest kingdoms), allowed for the exchange of items and personnel to be introduced, selected, and transported to various locations throughout the world. It also open up for greater opportunities to gain an even higher economic growth in revenue that would eventually help in the survival and strengthening of a society.

The Afro- Eurasian commercial world system extended from West Africa to China , and sometime during seasonal travel would connected the Islamic, eastern Christians and western Christians civilization to the Indian and Chinese civilization. (298)

The primary trade routes includes:

The West- African Trade system- Merchants and kings would sell gold and slaves to Muslim merchants from North Africa and Iberia. In the Mediterranean, various groups like the Muslims, Jews and western and eastern Christian would also trade for West African gold, European timber, Indian and Indonesian spices, dye, ointment, cotton, Chinese silk, porcelain, and lacquerware. Muslim, Jews and Indians were able to participate in Indian Ocean and Chinese Sea trade of gold for luxuries.

 3 secondary routes:

Silk Road offered the gold and luxury trades which connected Iran with China via Central Asia.

Maritime East Africa trade route allowed merchants to trade for ivory, gold and slaves. This route later connected Egypt and Iraq with Swahill Muslim city states along the East African coast and the gold mines of Zimbabwe.

Volga trade route- It was on this route that the Rus merchant traded gold, silver spices, ivory silk, wine and fur that connects the Middle East with western Europe. Abbisid and Mamluk used this trade route to obtain their fur from Russia and Scandinavia.

The Islamic and Jewish merchants also played a role in the trade system. They operated as wholesalers for import and distribution of eastern luxuries. They also organized the regional production and distribution of raw material ranging from textile fibers to chemicals, metal ignots and pitch for caulking ship planks.

The most surprising thing about the trade is how these trading routes and various merchants played an essential role in ensuring various items were dispersed throughout many countries and societies. Also, how they play a major role in the survival of these civilizations. If there were no trade routes, I believe that some if not most societies would have died out.

elect an interest group and research its origins, policy positions, and membership, U.S. History Media and Politics help Humanities Assignment Help

Special interest groups will speak out in various ways for or against legislation or express opinions on court cases related to its focus issues. For example, the National Rifle Association, or NRA, took particular interest in the 2008 Supreme Court case D.C. v. Heller. The NRA is an interest group that believes in responsible gun ownership for self-protection, hunting, and recreation.

Washington, D.C., had a ban on private handgun ownership, citing safety concerns in the busy city. In the D.C. v. Heller case, a group of people challenged the law as unconstitutional, and the NRA supported their position by submitting its opinion and rationale as a formal document to the court. The NRA used the language of the Constitution and different laws to justify its position, just as judges must do to decide a case.

The Supreme Court sided with Heller, striking down the ban. It is arguable how much of a role the NRA played in the case outcome, but the interest group definitely took action. Following the case, it filed lawsuits in other cities with similar bans. In this activity, you will research an interest group to determine what position it would take on a specific public policy or court decision and present the information in the form of an article or blog that could appear on the interest group’s website.

Steps

  1. Select an interest group and research its origins, policy positions, and membership. The following websites can help you find an interest group that focuses on an issue you care about:
  2. Consider whether the interest group would have supported a recent public policy change or court decision. You may use a law or program you have recently studied or search for one through newspapers, websites for Congress or your state legislature, or other Internet sites. You may find the Virtual Library, the Library of Congress–THOMAS, and Supreme Court websites helpful. You may find this Activity useful for how to conduct research.

Tip: Do not expect to find a direct link between the policy or court decision and your interest group, such as the NRA example above. You will most likely need to evaluate for yourself what the group’s position would be, based on what you learn about the interest group.

  3. Write an article that could appear as a blog entry on the interest group’s website. This is an expository piece of writing, so be sure to write in the third person (do not use “I think” or “I believe” or similar phrases with “I”). You may find it helpful to complete this Activity on Expository Writing before you begin your article.
    Make sure your article addresses:
    • name and purpose of the interest group, and any key individuals
    • origins of the interest group, including how it was formed and how it has grown or changed over time
    • whether it has ties to political parties or other interest groups
    • description of the specific policy or court decision
    • rationale for the interest group’s position on the policy or court decision
  4. Cite the sources of your information in MLA Format. Include your sources with your article when you submit it to your instructor.

Compare and contrast functional versus non-functional system requirements, engineering help Computer Science Assignment Help

  1. Compare and contrast functional versus non-functional system requirements, and provide an example of each.
  2. Complete these items for the exercise.

    • Using the Wilderness Weather Station case study for reference, document a detailed list of five or more user requirements. Prioritize this list.
    • Still using the Wilderness Weather Station case study for reference, document a detailed list of five or more system requirements. These system requirements should contain a mix of functional and non-functional requirements, and should also be prioritized.
    • Review the list of system requirements, and introduce at least one functional and one non-functional requirement change. Document these changes and the impact those changes might have on the development process.

Each assignment should include a prioritized list of both user and system requirements. The changes to the software system requirements (both functional and non-functional) must also be listed, along with observations regarding the impact those changes might have on the development process.

    3)

Using the list of User Stories you prepared for assignment 3.3, derive 20 requirements.

Each requirement should be in the form “The System shall <something>”.  A very useful variation is “The System shall provide the capability <for the user to do something>”.

For each requirement, identify the User Story number from which you derived this requirement.  If you didn’t number your User Stories then include the full text of the User Story you are using as the source for each requirement.

Special note:  If you want to revise one or more of your original User Stories, or even create new ones, you may do so.  Just supply the text of the new or revised User Story.

identify two IVs and three DVs that are measured on continuous scales, homework help Writing Assignment Help

Considering your dissertation research interests (and perhaps using the same IVs and DVs you identified in the discussion questions from previous modules), identify two IVs (each with 2 categories) and three DVs that are measured on continuous scales. Think of DV measures that probably are moderately correlated with each other because they are measuring different components of the same or similar concepts (e.g., three different measures of academic performance). Given these variables and design, what information would a factorial MANOVA provide you? What more would you want to know if you get significant results in the factorial MANOVA? Why would this be significant to your research? (Research support is not required for this question.)

Bank Debt in International Markets, business and finance homework help Business Finance Assignment Help

Topic is : Bank Debt in International Markets

This assignment requires you to compile an Annotated Bibliography of 40 entries (twice as many is ideal!), 85% of which must be from the past five years. Each annotated entry must concisely summarize key aspects of a study—participants, purpose, research design and methods, data analysis, key findings—and include a thoughtful evaluation of the significance of the study’s findings and conclusions as they relate to your topic. In order to write quality entries, you must understand each study—what the researchers did, why they did it, and what they found and concluded. Be sure you paraphrase all content, following Academic Integrity guidelines to insure that your work is your own.

All of the entries should be relevant to your goal of developing a research problem that contributes to theory in a topic area and to designing a study that addresses the problem. Organize the entries thematically into roughly the following categories:

  • Seminal Articles
  • Theory
  • Issues and Debates
  • Key Findings
  • Designs

You will probably want to add categories specific to your topic area, and you may modify the recommended categories to organize the entries in a way that makes most sense. Be sure to include works that provide alternate or opposing perspectives on the proposed topic area in order to demonstrate unbiased research. Focus particularly on works that address main ideas in the field, describe areas of controversy, and indicate areas of incomplete knowledge and relate to your envisioned study’s problem, purpose, and research questions. It may be helpful to create a spreadsheet of the studies in your topic area, which includes, among other things, the constructs studied, how the constructs were operationalized, and the findings. Sometimes having the summary information all viewable at one time helps identify a problem. Include historical and germinal works as well as current works.

Length: 150-250 words per entry

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your paper should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
