We discussed political socialization—the process of acquiring of political values and beliefs. We are also discussing political partisanship, ideology, and related concepts. The second writing assignment requires you to assess the influences on your own political partisanship and political ideology at this point in your life. Although we all like to think of ourselves as independent thinkers, the course of our own lives influences how and what we think.

How would you best describe your political partisanship, ideology, and other broad political values? What are the sources of your own political partisanship or independence? What are the sources of your own political ideology (along a liberal-conservative continuum)? (To say you have no political beliefs is acceptable if correct, but why don’t you have political beliefs if so many others do?) You are encouraged strongly (though not required) to contact parents or caregivers, other family members, and friends to provide information about your own political history. This applies particularly to your childhood. My hunch is that your parents, caregivers, family, and friends may be surprised but eager to talk with you about things they believe. You do not need to conduct library research, but to evaluate your own life experiences and how they impacted (or impact) your own political beliefs.

Your assignment is to prepare a paper, 4-5 pages in length, assessing your current political partisanship and ideology in the context of the theories, applications, and data presented in class and in the readings.

If you have no strong political beliefs, no worries! Others do, so your paper should focus on why partisanship or ideology did not take root in you. But be careful–those political beliefs are pretty fundamental, so it’s worth contemplating your core values and how you came to them.

If you are not an American citizen, no worries! Although our focus in this class is on American political behavior, our theories should travel and should apply to your political orientation and political preferences no matter your background.

Immigration/Naturalization Law Assignment

U.S. immigration and naturalization laws have played an important role in the production of an “American” identity that is premised on racial, sexual, gender, and/or class hierarchies. For this assignment, please select one law from the list below and analyze how it relies on racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and/or class categories to regulate immigration admission and exclusion, and to produce “American” identity. Please briefly describe the historical context in which the law was passed.

In this assignment, you will look for a report of some contemporary science in the news and attempt to understand and evaluate it according to the 6-step program for evaluating theoretical hypotheses described in Chapter 2 of, Understanding Scientific Reasoning.

You can use the sources (but not the examples) listed in the class Google Site > Science in the news (Links to an external site.), or use a source you prefer, so long as it is not merely a social media post. You may not use anything from Reddit or similar user-driven websites.

The report you find should be substantial, that is, it should give enough information about the episode that you have a reasonable chance of finding all the elements needed to understand and evaluate the episode. It doesn’t matter whether your episode leads to a judgment that the data agree with the evidence or not, or are inconclusive.

When you find a suitable episode, download a copy of the report — not just a URL, make a PDF — and also record the URL (or other bibliographic information) to cite in your assignment. Then, read the report of the episode and try to understand and evaluate it according to our program. You may find it valuable to dig deeper, looking up the original science that the report describes. You are not required to go to the scientific literature if there is enough detail to do an evaluation from your popular media source. I do not recommend going first to the scientific literature to find a study to evaluate. Then, write a 2 page report with your evaluation. (2 pages is a guideline, not a rule or limit, indicating roughly the scale of writing you should attempt. You can format your essay in any readable format — changing font size or margin size to comply with the 2 page guideline is silly and won’t fool anybody. )

Your assignment should include the following elements:

1. A brief (1-2 paragraph) summary in your own words of the episode as described in the report you found.
2. 5-6 paragraphs giving your evaluation of the episode. If your episode leads to the judgment that the data do not agree with predictions from a model, you will have 5 paragraphs. If the data agree with predictions, you will have 6 paragraphs.
3. A diagram following the pattern of Figure 2.12 on page 36 of our textbook, but instead of using the labels for boxes such as “MODEL” and “DATA” and labels for arrows such as “observation/experiment” and “reasoning/calculation”, use brief descriptive labels about your episode, like the textbook does in Figures 2.10 and 2.11 on pages 32 and 33. Do not fill in the boxes with text that substitutes for the 6 paragraphs evaluating the episode.
4. A bibliography citing the author(s), date of publication, title, and publishing source (with URL if you found your report on the internet). Your citation can follow any bibliography format you like, so long as these elements are included. The standard is that a reader should be able to know what your source is from reading the bibliography and be able to find the source themselves from your bibliography. A bibliography that only has titles, or authors is therefore not acceptable. A bibliography that only has URLs is also not acceptable.
5. A copy of the report you used to write your evaluation.

You can submit your assignment as one PDF file or several (e.g. one for the text, one for the diagram, and one for the copy of the report you used to write your evaluation). If you want to submit several PDFs to one assignment in Canvas, when you are submitting your PDF, you click the “Add Another File” button to add a file to your submission (BEFORE YOU CLICK THE SUBMIT BUTTON). If you want to add a 3rd PDF, you click “Add Another File” a second time (again, BEFORE YOU CLICK THE SUBMIT BUTTON). Then, when you’ve added all your files, you click “submit”. Your assignment will be graded for content and correctness. Since we obviously cannot read all the reports you find and include with your reports, we will rely on your summary in the first part of the assignment, though we may skim your report articles if we can’t make sense of your summary and perhaps to see that your evaluation is appropriate to the report.

This assignment is worth 10% of your course grade. It will be graded on a 20 point scale following these criteria and with component point assignments as indicated:

(3 points) Coherence and clarity of writing in the summary.
(10 points — 2 for each understanding step, 2 for the 1-2 evaluation steps combined) Appropriateness and correctness of each of the 5-6 paragraphs to the report.
(2 points) Diagram follows the pattern of Figure 2.12 and is appropriately labeled.
(2 points) Bibliography is present and adequate.
(2 points) A copy of the report is included with your evaluation.
(1 point) Turning in something rather than nothing.

Using the design that you created in Assign #2(or see my correct answers under Week #7), we are now going to build the tables using SQL.

Using SQL ‘Create Table’ statements, create the 3 tables displayed below.
