Student Learning Outcome:

Students who complete this course will be able to describe strategies that empower families and encourage family involvement in children’s development.

Assignment Description:

In this assignment, you will create an informative tri-fold brochure based on the needs of a family in a hypothetical classroom. The brochure will demonstrate your potential to support and involve families in learning more about their child’s development. Additionally, it will demonstrate your ability to put together a professional-looking document. A skill that is needed by all teachers.

Part 1: Paper

In a separate paper (do not include the following on your brochure)- Imagine you are a teacher and your goal is to empower families by working together to support their child’s development. To do this, you must respond to the children within the context of their families and communities. For this paper, describe the classroom demographics using the following format in bullet points:

  • Age of children:
  • Socio-economic status of the general area:
  • Primary language(s) spoken:
  • City, State (describe if this is rural, inner-city, etc):
  • Describe in a few sentences, the general needs of the whole class that you are observing. Based on your pretend observation, you will respond to this need by creating an informational brochure to support parents through education. Explain why you choose this topic for your brochure based on student needs. For example, if you are describing a classroom of 2-year-olds, you may want to create a brochure that has strategies to help move through the stage of autonomy vs. shame and doubt or if you are describing a classroom of 5-year-olds where there might be a lot of conversation about watching TV, you may want to create a brochure based on screen time and strategies on how to limit the time spent watching TV.

You can take the inspiration for your hypothetical classroom from any source, even personal experience. Just make sure, when reporting it for this assignment, that personal information is undetectable.

Part 2: Brochure

Based on the classroom you described, you will be creating a brochure to support and involve families in learning more about their child’s development. If you do not yet know how to make a brochure, here are some simple directions: How to create a brochure using google docs

Include in your brochure:

  1. The purpose. This should catch the eye of your intended audience.
  2. Specific strategies with examples that parents can implement immediately and with ease.
    • Include a minimum of 3 strategies
    • Strategies should be stated in a friendly engaging way
  3. Resources where parents might get additional information on the topic.
    • Include a minimum of two resources with live hyperlinks to the articles or videos.

Presentation

  1. Your brochure should be attractive and inviting. Use text boxes to organize your words and graphics/pictures.
  2. Make sure all graphics or pictures selected are meaningful to the section they are included in. Avoid random photos.
  3. It must be typed and look professional.
  4. The completed brochure should be 2 pages, and if printed would have information that logically flows when printed front/back and folded.
