[APA] Counterterrorism Law. Simple question

Write an essay based on your Four-Part Map. That is, explain all the arguments from this map in paragraphs, Request: This task has a short deadline, so please only bid if you are confident that you can deliver it in the expected timeframe. There are 3 questions which need to be answered in different document with their own cover page and one reference ( at least 2-3 references per question). Each question should be answered in approximately 700 words, double spaced (NO more than 900 words per question is acceptable and no less than 700) . Considering this is a law assignment, grammar/academic vocabulary are mandatory otherwise the paper can not be graded. You need to use law references and law vocabulary to prove your statement. Stay on topic and avoid filling sentences. For each of the questions, use headings to point out that all sub-questions were answered.
Question 1 (approximately 700 words)
Imagine that you are a judge charged with selecting which body of law and policy should govern targeting in counterterrorism operations: that found in traditional international law or that advocated by the United States. Your answer should address the following:
a. What are the traditional international law understandings regarding the law of targeting?
b. What is the U.S. position regarding the law and policy of targeting?
c. Which body of law and policy would you select and why? Are there elements of the body of law that you did not select that you nonetheless believe are sensible, consistent with important norms, or necessary given the changing nature of terrorism?
Question 2 (approximately 700 words)
a. What are the two components of U.S. counterterror strategy since September 11, 2001, that have (or had) the highest potential to reduce the number of terrorists, reduce the effectiveness of terrorism, or defeat terrorist groups militarily?
b. What are the two components of U.S. counterterror strategy since September 11, 2001, that have (or had) the greatest potential to increase the number of terrorists, the effectiveness of terrorist groups, or the appeal of terrorism?
Question 3 (approximately 700 words)
The F.B.I. arrested Sam Tabor and wants to charge him with providing Material Support for Terrorism. The FBI alleges that Tabor is a computer science student at a university. He designed a computer program that worked on Twitter, enabling people to identify, copy, and save official ISIS media content before that content could be flagged and removed by Twitter. Without Tabor’s program, the transfer of official ISIS material from one account to another must be done manually, by copying each file individually. This process can take an extensive amount of time and cannot be completed before Twitter flags and removes it. Tabor’s program eliminated the need to perform these tasks manually and allowed users to evade Twitter’s attempts to remove ISIS content. Tabor created the program and then published it online on his personal website. Tabor maintains that his program can be used with any content, not just ISIS content, and that many people have used it for other purposes. People have used the program to find, copy, and disseminate content about their favorite football teams, musicians, or movies. Tabor did not personally copy, save, or post any official ISIS content (a fact that the FBI does not contest). The FBI alleges that Tabor published a series of tweets about his radical ideology that shows that he created the program to benefit ISIS. The FBI alleges that Tabor argued in favor of ISIS’s violent practices, justifying them as necessary steps to reform US foreign policy. The FBI also alleges that he praised Americans who traveled to Syria to fight with ISIS. The FBI states that Tabor’s tweets included links to news stories in his tweets, but that he did not link to official ISIS content. The government wants to prosecute Tabor for Material Support. Analyze this possibility. Your answer should address the following issues in order.
a. (i) What are the elements of the Material Support statutes? How do the statutes differ from each other? (ii) Which statute would you choose in this case? Why?
b. Consider the Supreme Court’s ruling in Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project. How does that case affect a possible prosecution of Tabor?
c. Would you recommend charging Tabor with Material Support for Terrorism on the facts given? Why or why not?

150 WORDS TO EACH QUESTION. RESPOND TO ALL BELOW. MUST HAVE AT LEAST 1 REFERENCE AND MUST BE CITED IN THE RESPONSE WHERE THE REFERENCE WAS USED.

Question 1(Akira)

Because many nations who were once fully communist have adopted capitalist ideas and more countries are participating in free trade, international capital markets have grown increasingly common. Increases in free trade are mostly attributable to improved communication and recognition of mutually advantageous industrial agreements. This surge in international trade has also resulted in an increase in international investment. International investors are attracted to the US market, and the country has placed regulations and authorities in place to protect people who invest in government securities, federally sponsored credit agency securities, municipal securities, corporate bonds, preferred stock, and common stock. As technology and capitalism have advanced around the world, security markets have changed. The economy is no longer a collection of isolated countries, but rather a fluid global economy with investors looking for the best return with the least risk. As the trend of countries removing government controls over businesses has slowed, the United States has become a paradigm for what capitalism and success can look like for other countries. Federally Sponsored Credit Agencies, or FSCAs, are some of the largest security markets in the world. These are generally agencies that support the housing industry, such as Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, but they also include education loans and agricultural loans. Our text also addresses how substantial advancements in telecommunications are enabling a more connected globe to conduct business with one another.

The Electronic Communications Network, or ECN, has made it possible to trade using computer networks while also allowing for the monitoring of current stock values in order to sell or trade. Because of the ability to employ electronic trading, the market and the way stocks are regulated, traded, and purchased have changed. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange, usually known as CME, is one of the companies that make up a conglomerate. This conglomerate is made up of a number of significant firms that sell their stocks at regional levels, allowing traders to choose whether to trade with the CME or the NYSE, giving them dual trading choices.

UScellular

In order to allocate funding for the continuous expansion of 5G rollout in 2020, UScellular had to make various decisions. This is a necessary business expenditure as well as a significant outlay in order to stay competitive with the other wireless behemoths. The tough part of this current resource allocation process is that due to the ongoing build out and deployment time frame, no estimated returns on investment are predicted for several years. UScellular was able to raise financing through issuing long-term debt that would be paid off in 2033, as well as using cash and cash equivalents to fund future 5G developments.

Question 2(Dawn)

The following discussion forum will discuss the evolution of securities markets like NASDAQ, CME, ECNs, and foreign exchanges. Security Markets comprise myriad securities, from government bonds to corporate common stock, influenced by many variables such as interest rates, exchange rates, investors’ confidence, economic growth, global crises, and more (Block, Hirt & Danielsen, 2019). They help corporations, government agencies as well as individuals with capital allocations. Securities markets allow stocks, bonds, and other securities to be bought and sold quickly and at a fair price.

Most people are familiar with the more common security markets like The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and The National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ). The NYSE is an auction market that uses specialists, while the NASDAQ is a dealer market with many market makers competing. Today, the NYSE is part of the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), and the NASDAQ is part of the publicly traded NASDAQ, Inc. The NASDAQ exchanges are completed electronically on an international level, while brokers actively trade stocks on the floor of the NYSE. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME)is a futures exchange that trades in interest rates, currencies, indices, metals, and agricultural products. CME has been increasing in popularity since it started back in 2007 since they are a means of protecting investing companies (Block, Hirt & Danielsen, 2019).

Electronic communication networks (ECNs) are used today to trade. ECNs are computerized system that automatically matches buy and sell orders for securities in the market. It has made it easier to trade with computers. Individuals can view the current selling prices and anticipated purchasing prices of stocks and be matched at the best price available. It is a highly efficient process using sophisticated technology.

The efficient market hypothesis suggests markets adjust very quickly to new information and that it is challenging for investors to select securities portfolios that outperform the market. The efficient market hypothesis may be stated in many different forms, as indicated in Chapter 14 of our textbook. If stock markets are efficient, it is challenging for investors to select portfolios of common stocks that can outperform the stock market in general. The efficient market hypothesis is stated in three forms—the weak, semi strong, and strong (Block, Hirt & Danielsen, 2019). I do not think that it is either a good or bad thing; I believe it helps calm investors when markets turn sour – as they always do from time to time

Dark pools work much like ECNs, except that the size of the orders and the prices are not available to the other traders in the pool or to the public (Block, Hirt & Danielsen, 2019). The lack of transparency in dark pools could result in poor execution of trades or abuse but gives potentially better prices and lower costs in exchange fees.

A real-life company that raised capital in 2020 is Vroom. I work at a car auction, and this company is one of my accounts, so I went with them. Their IPO date was June 8, 2020, at $22.00 per share (Vroom, Inc., 2021). They continued expansion to allocate capital for the company by taking the used car market to another level. They bring buyers and sellers together and have over 3000 cars a day online. They integrated a state-of-the-art website with the funding, and it provides the necessary resources to grow further and scale their business. Their stock is low; it closed today at $13.57, but their revenue is up 177.63%, according to their financials. They have raised a total of $721 million since it was launched by investors that include General Catalyst, Altimeter Capital, and Allen & Co (Vroom, Inc., 2021).

Question 3 (Jackie)

Warner Music Group decided to go public and offer stock on June 3rd, 2020. This was part of a secondary sale as 77,000,000 units of common stock would be sold by Access Industries LLC (Wills, 2020). The initial public offering price was $25 and at 77 million was figured to be worth 1.93 Billion dollars for the company. Warner Music Group or WMG closed at $30.12 on its first day, within its first $10 days it stayed relatively close to its day 1 closing price at $30.77, and similarly by day 30 closing at $29.35. The underwriters for the IPO were Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs as the lead underwriters, along with several others as joint bookrunners (Linnane, 2020). The bookrunners consisted of 23 banks including Bank of America Securities, Citigroup, and J.P. Morgan.

According to the website Statist, the underwriters would have collected a 5.4 % fee on top of gross proceeds from the offering. When I took the 1.925 billion that was gained and then figured the fees, this would have been $103,950,000. That’s 100 Million dollars in fees for this IPO (Rudden, 201). Additionally, there is an SEC filing fee that is $92.70 per $1,000,000. The math on this worked out to be an additional $21,035,598 in fees for SEC filings. This totals to $124,985,598 in fees for the IPO of Warner Music Group. Since the IPO WMG has average around $42 a share seeing an increase form its IPO and 30-day average of around $30. This shows that there was significant return gained based off volume for the underwriters, investors, as well as WMG gaining around 1.8 billion from its IPO in capital.

A Dutch Auction approach takes the initial offering and determines the prices after all bids and determining the highest price. With this the price would then continue to be lowered until it gets a bid. With a traditional underwriting method, there are investment firms and banks that would purchase the public offerings and assume the risks but guarantees the company has made its money. With the traditional underwriting process there is also the ability for the underwriters to increase the price and make a market as needed to help the sale of the stock (Block, 2019).

Question 4 (Timothy)

One of the main differences between a Dutch auction and the traditional underwriting method would be that in a Dutch Auction they use bids on the stocks to determine what the price should be set at. Whatever the highest bid is ends up dictating the final buying price for all buyers. What this does open up is for smaller investors to get involved because they have the ability to set the price on stocks. This allows for there to be no bidding wars also because during a Dutch auction it is all blind bidding. This gives the investor the full power to set the price of a stock at what they truly believe it to be unlike crazy fluctuation in prices because of rumors or certain things that are going on like what we saw with Gamestop this year.

The company I decided to look into was DoorDash. They IPO’d on December 9th of 2020. The initial public offering for Doordash was $102 a share. At the end of the first day the share closed at $189.51. After 10 days of trading the stock was at $156.79. After 30 days of trading it was at $152.77. At launch the market value of DoorDash was about $69 billion and they offered 33 million shares. So far they are down 16% returns since IPO.[supanova_question]

Q6 (Total marks 15) A special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) is formed

Q6 (Total marks 15)

A special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) is formed strictly to raise capital through an initial public offering (IPO) for acquiring an existing company. The fund raised by a SPAC is placed in an interest-bearing trust account. The management team of a SPAC decides on which company to acquire, but the investors do not know which company will be acquired at the time of IPO. The SPAC management team usually owns 20% of the SPAC though it does not need to pay for the shares it owned. A SPAC will be liquidated and the money in the trust account will be returned to the investors if it fails to complete an acquisition within a specified period (typically two years). In this case, the SPAC management team will not receive any money from the liquidation.

Solely based on the above discussion on the arrangement of a SPAC, discuss briefly one potential moral hazard problem between the management team of a SPAC and

the IPO investors. (7 marks)

The regulator requires that investors have the right to vote on a potential target brought forth by the management team of a SPAC. If there are more than 50% of the investors approve the potential target but more than 20% of them disapprove, the trust account will be closed and the funds will be returned to the investors.

Briefly discuss why the above regulator’s requirement may alleviate the moral hazard problem stated in your answer to part (a). (3 marks)

Give one reason to explain why the above regulator’s requirement cannot eliminate the moral hazard problem stated in your answer to part (a). (5 marks)

Q8 (Total marks 15)

“If every person decides to save more by decreasing autonomous consumption, the national private saving must increase in the short-run equilibrium.” [Hint: National private saving is Real Income (Y) minus Income Tax (T) and Consumption (C)]

(a) Is the above statement True, False, or Uncertain in an economy in which income tax is a lump sum (i.e. Tax = To, where To is a constant)? Explain your answer briefly.

(10 marks)

(b) Is this statement True, False, or Uncertain in an economy in which income tax is a proportion of real income (i.e. Tax = tY, where t is a fixed income tax rate and Y is real income)? Explain your answer briefly.

Using Technology in Business

After conducting intensive research, I discovered that Technology is essential for rapid business growth. The use of technology helps business owners to use innovative ideas to create a new product. This is well facilitated by implementing technological applications used in creating new and unique products. The use of technical applications is used as a competitive advantage against other competing businesses because customers are highly attracted to new and unique products offered in the market. Existing companies must adopt the use of technology to remain relevant and competitive.

Further, technological applications allow business owners to establish new mechanisms to understand, interpret, and meet the customers’ preferences and choice. As from this, it is possible to create and maintain compatibility between the set business goals and customers’ requirements. Companies must carry out relevant research to identify the most appropriate technological application ideal for their business to embrace business growth. The irrelevant technical application might lead to business failure and hence the need for companies to know the most appropriate technological application. In my project, I have presented the significant roles of technology use in business. Proper technology use has facilitated digital transformation, safeguarding financial data, and effective executive decision-making.

Today, digital transformation in business has dramatically been achieved following the use of technology. Digital transformation involves combining digital technologies to promote business growth. Digital transformation has assisted in overcoming business barriers primarily by creating new products and developing new tactics for conducting business (Schwertner,388). In the business sector, digital transformation has contributed to the use of advanced soft wares and advanced business processes that increase business revenues by minimizing expenses. The use of advanced software in business helps monitor a steady flow of business processes by monitoring daily cash flow.   Although digital transformation is essential for business growth, it can only be implemented if a company has a well-established leadership structure. To execute the changes related to digital transformation, the company’s leadership system must recommend suitable strategies during the digital transformation process. Effective leadership is associated with adequate knowledge and skills that significantly enhance digital transformation in business.

Using advanced technology helps in safeguarding a company’s financial data in various ways. First, it helps in conducting regular analysis of the company’s credit reports. This helps in maintaining transparency in the company’s financial record. The move to analyze the credit reports is carried out to protect the accessibility of sensitive financial data from unauthorized persons and social network sites, which might threaten the company’s financial data. Secondly, technology use enhances the creation of authentic and robust passwords that play a crucial role in protecting the company’s financial data. Availability of passwords in computers containing financial data acts as a defense strategy against manipulating financial data.  Business owners should seek technical advice from Information Technology (IT) specialists to ensure that hackers cannot easily exploit the created passwords. Using weak passwords acts as a pathway for hackers to access data, and hence businesses should invest in data protection strategies (Siahaan,3).

Further, involving IT specialists in data protection strategies equips business owners with the essential knowledge to easily detect phishing and other cybercrime tricks from hackers. Phishing involves malicious acts of sending emails using false reputable identities to attract the attention of computers users who are mainly business owners. Hackers use phishing to persuade business owners to disclose vital financial data such as bank accounts and passwords that offer access to financial data.

In my project, I further discovered that advanced technology helps in effective decision-making in business. Before embarking on a decision-making process, the business owners research the current technologies that best suit their specific industry. During decision-making, various technologies offer an opportunity for decision-makers to consult and analyze the trending business technologies (Neziraj and Berisha-shaqiri,14). The use of current technologies in business acts as a competitive advantage against other competing companies. In normal circumstances, customers will prefer to consume products from companies that remain updated in terms of technology use. Quality decision-making is essential for every business because it helps establish the most suitable strategies that enhance quality products. Decision-making aims to obtain favorable outcomes in the business sector and mitigate decisions that could lead to business loss.

From the research I conducted in my project, it is evident that technology is essential for business growth. Appropriate technology use has facilitated digital transformation, safeguarding financial data, and effective executive decision-making. Digital transformation has helped business owners to use advanced soft wares that enhance the creation of new products that meet customers’ expectations. Technology safeguards sensitive financial data that is essential for business growth. Protecting financial data is well enhanced by implementing protective mechanisms that prevent hackers’ accessibility into computers containing financial data. Further, decision-makers use technology to identify the most appropriate technologies that will influence business growth. Technology offers a wide range of technologies where the most appropriate decision is selected through consultation in decision making.

Visit W3Schools (or any other source) and review some of the many

Visit W3Schools (or any other source) and review some of the many CSS options that you see there. Select three that you’d like to see employed in the JavaJam site and why you think they would be beneficial in term of aesthetic appeal to your client.

CSS Outline is an effective element that a user can apply on their website, since it allows a particular element to ‘stand out’. In addition, it allows the website developer to emphasize on content that is valuable to both the end-user and the developer. Moreover, CSS Lists is another suitable element that will make sure content in the JavaJam site is well arranged. The main significance of this element is allowing the content to be readable easily. Furthermore, CSS Icons is an element that will be effective in the JavaJam site, especially for links to social media links. These icons will be easy for any JavaJam site user to view and take their desired action.

There is no doubt that you will be adding graphics to JavaJam. In that vein, what CSS modifications or features might you add to make your graphics them more interesting/attractive to your client / viewer. Remember you are not designing for your approval. You are always working for client approval.

A suitable CSS modification for JavaJam website is ensuring the graphics maintain the right balance of weight. Asymmetrical and symmetrical balances should be present in the JavaJam site as they make their graphics more attractive to the user. Failure to achieve this kind of balance makes the experience of the users not pleasant; therefore, they might not visit it again. The lack of user-friendliness is an important element if the developers want client approval. Likewise, they should use grids to compartmentalize their graphic designs. These grids will allow the developers to have horizontal and vertical rulers, which will allow them to make the graphics easy on the user’s eyes.

Visit W3Schools and review the topic of “The Box Model”.  Discuss what options you might employ to create an 80% wide bye 200px high navigation area on your home page.  The navigation area must be positioned 300 pixels (or suggest a better positioning).  The nav area must have either a background color or background image.  You do not have to produce the code but you do need to exchange ideas as to your approach.

The navigation area mostly contains the links to other pages of your website, plus appears in the top or the side of your homepage. In my website, I will employ the navigation area at the top of my homepage, plus include the hover effect. As such, the HTML code required for this navigation will appear after the header section. Similarly, the CSS style will use an 80% width by 200px as its size, and its position will be 150 so that it does not take too much space. It will also contain a background image of the logo of the website.

You are to visit W3Schools and research, review, and modify the CSS Flexbox structure.  Don’t just look at it. Add sections to it, remove sections, change colors, etc.  get a solid feel for a flexbox and then discuss how you think this could be beneficial to either JavaJam or Fish Creek or both.

The main benefit CSS Flexbox is that it reduces the need for using the float or positioning to achieve the same goal. Therefore, for both the JavaJam and Fish Creek websites, the order property will make sure the flex items on the websites are in a certain order. Additionally, the responsive flexbox property will allow the websites to come up with layouts that users on different screen sizes can enjoy. Equally, the CSS Flex Container will allow the developers of the two websites to create flex containers that include the flex items. These flex containers can be made flexible by utilizing the display property as flex.

Discuss your views on the use of the Flexible Box Layout.  How might you incorporate it into a site?  Would you use it for images, text content, hyperlinks?  What role do you see for it in your design work?  None?  Extensive? Novelty value?    Be definitive

The Flexible Boy Layout is a suitable element that a website developer should use in their website, because it makes the website’s content more flexible. It is a suitable element for the images and hyperlinks, especially the responsive layout property, since these elements will remain the same, regardless of the screen size of the user. The main role of this flex box layout is making the content of the website more flexible to additional relevant design styles of the website. Hence, it creates an element of novelty on the website because the designer can apply unique styles to the contents of the website.

Visit W3Schools and investigate the list of tags.  Select at least three (don’t all use the same three) and explain the purpose of the ‘type’ and of what benefit it may be in the process of form design, Why would you use it?  Why would you not use it?

Be very specific!

is a suitable element that defines the single-line text input field. It is mostly used by web designers to specify the type of content one can add in a form. specifies the password field. It is utilized in forms to provide an area where the user can enter their password. It allows the designer creating the form to create an area where the user can input their passwords, hence accessing a particular page. portrays a button that one clicks to enter the content of the form. The main significance of this button is it allows the user to send their contents to access the page they want.[supanova_question]

Consider a policy that governs or shapes some aspect of community life within LA (e.g., neighborhood oil drilling, healthcare,.

Consider a policy that governs or shapes some aspect of community life within LA (e.g., neighborhood oil drilling, healthcare, housing, or labor policy), and identify the ways this policy affects a community or subcommunity within LA. Apply one of the moral theories that we have examined over the course of the semester (Plato’s theory of justice, Aristotle’s virtue ethics, utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, etc.) and determine the moral value of the policy–in doing so, explain the basic elements of the theory which you apply, identify the relevant material details of the case, and evaluate the policy in light of these considerations. Does the policy adequately respond to the needs of the community, and if not, what do you think ought to be done?
Identify and explain what you take to be the most powerful objection or counter-argument to the position you have developed. Explain how you think the objection can be responded to.
Your essay should be around four pages, double-spaced, in twelve-point font, with 1″ margins. In the paper, your aim should be to develop a position by explaining the details of a situation and constructing arguments that could convince a reasonable interlocutor who isn’t knowledgeable of the subject matter. That means your paper should both provide context for understanding the theory discussed, and you should clearly detail the reasoning process by which you arrive at your conclusions. For additional guidance in planning and developing your paper, see: http://www.jimpryor.net/teaching/guidelines/writing.html, and feel free to contact me with questions. You may use either MLA or APA formatting, and you should cite any relevant article or text in developing your argument.
For additional scholarly research and explanation, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is an excellent starting point: https://plato.stanford.edu/

This paper is worth 60 points and will be graded on the clarity of your thesis (6 pts), its being well formatted, grammatical, and well written (12 pts), the accuracy and informativeness of its content generally (18), your use of sources (6 pts), and the structure and thoughtfulness of your argument (18 pts).

Mack Case Study

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Mack Case Study:

You are a youth worker with high-risk teens. You lead a juvenile delinquency prevention support group that meets after school on Wednesdays and Fridays, every week. There are 12 male group members between the ages of 13-15, who are believed to be at risk for juvenile delinquency. All of them are experiencing academic problems at school. Some of the group members have had problems acting out at school and home; others are socially isolated and withdrawn.

The Current Situation

On Friday, Josh approaches you after the support group meeting. He is very worried about Mack, one of the group members. He confides in you that he heard Mack telling several other group members that he was going to commit suicide this weekend.

According to Josh, Mack said that he could get a bottle of pain killer pills from his mother’s medicine cabinet and take them with alcohol.

Josh also stated that Mack asked the other group members, “How much alcohol do I need to drink, with the pain killer pills, to commit suicide?”

Some of the group members were telling Mack about how much alcohol to drink with the pain killer pills, in order to commit suicide.

Josh is worried. Mack sounds serious and has a plan to commit suicide.

Mack’s Story

You speak with Mack about this situation after the group meeting.

Mack admits that he did threaten to commit suicide but is not completely sure that he will follow through with his plan.

He asks you to keep this a secret.

He does not want to upset his parents. His parents are going through a divorce and are fighting every day. They are always fighting about credit card debt and his mom’s trips to the casino, where she is gambling.

His older brother, age 17, ran away from home two weeks ago and is still missing.

Mack states that he feels angry almost every day. He misses his brother.

Your Observations and Understanding of Mack

According to the school social worker, Mack has been withdrawn and socially isolated at school. He is often seen eating lunch alone. His parents describe him as shy.

Mack is usually quiet and somewhat withdrawn at group meetings.

Lately, Mack seems more willing to talk and express himself in group meetings.

This past Wednesday, he did share with the group that his brother ran away from home. He also stated that he was worried about his brother.

Mack has no one to talk to about all the problems with his parents since his brother ran away from home.

______________________________________________________________________________

Questions:

1. How would you respond to Mack’s request to keep his Suicidal behavior a secret? Answers must include self-determination. Use at least one citation from the NASW code of ethics “Ethical Standards 1.02 & 1.07” to support your answer.

2. Identify and describe at least 2-3 strengths in Mack and his situation.

3. How would you use this strength to help Mack and/or his family solve their problem/s?

4. Use the Person-in-the-Environment (PIE) to analyze and understand the deeper issues in this client problem scenario. On a separate/blank piece of paper or page: Create an Eco Map to analyze this client problem scenario using the principles of Systems Theory and Ecological Systems Theory. Provide a key by which to identify whether or not the relationship is strong, tenuous or weak for each system that you choose. Choose only systems that are mentioned or inferred in the scenario. Mack is the client for the ecomap.

Mack has been talking to his fellow group members about suicide and he even has a plan! You will need to approach Mack about his situation. Choose two Active Listening Skills that you would use to talk with Mack about his current threats of suicide. Your goal is to gain a better understanding of how Mack feels and his situation and to instill hope in Mack. Describe how and why you will use these two skills and give an example of what you would actually say (or do) to Mack.

5. List an Active Listening Skill you would use? Explain why you believe this to be helpful,

provide an example of what you would actually say.

6. List an additional Active Listening Skill you would use? Explain why you believe this to be helpful, provide an example of what you would actually say.

7. Summarize the strategies you learned from the case study: who, what, where why etc.

8. Personal assessment: After completing this assignment I realized (feelings, thoughts, experiences)? did anything show up for you personally or what about this case study was challenging? What did you learn about yourself?

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty and will be treated seriously.

According to the 2016-2017 Cuyamaca College Catalogue, plagiarism is defined as “the act of taking ideas, words or specific substantive material of another and offering them as one’s own without giving credit to the source.

Writers give credit to sources by using citations.  According to Richard Nordquist, a citation is a source quoted in an essay, report or book to clarify, illustrate, or substantiate a point (About.com).

A detailed description of plagiarism and accompanying consequences is available in the Cuyamaca College Catalogue under “Academic Honesty”.  Here are some common examples of plagiarism:

Submitting a paper with someone else’s ideas, opinions, or research without citing the appropriate source

Paraphrasing without citing the appropriate source

Submitting the same paper in more than one class

Submitting a paper as your own work that was written by another student or person

Submitting a paper that was purchased from the Internet or elsewhere

When in doubt, use a citation!

Citations show that you made the effort to do the research for your essay or term paper.

Always have a References page at the conclusion of your work.

Consult the instructor if you are unsure about an issue related to plagiarism.[supanova_question]

Learning Outcome(s):3

Explain network protocols including Transport Control Protocol / Internet Protocol.

Question One

Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) is a suite of communication protocols used to connect network devices on the Internet. TCP / IP can also be used as a communication protocol on a private computer network e.g., an intranet or extranet.

TCP defines how applications can create communication channels over a network. It also manages how a message is divided into smaller packets before they are transmitted over the Internet and reassembled in the correct order at the destination address.

IP Address defines how each packet is routed and forwarded to ensure that it reaches the correct destination. Each gateway computer on the network checks this IP address to determine where to route the message.

TCP / IP uses the client-server communication model, in which a user or computer (a client) receives a service (such as sending a web page) from another computer (a server) on the network.

In short, the TCP / IP protocol suite is classified as stateless, which means that each client request is considered new because it has nothing to do with previous requests. Being stateless, network routes are released so that they can be used continuously.

Answer the following questions briefly.

How does resource reservation work in the TCP / IP model?

Which TCP / IP layer is responsible to reserve resources across a network using the TCP / IP model?

What protocol assigns an IP address to the client connected to the Internet?

Checksum is used by various protocols on the Internet, but not at the one of TCP / IP layers. Explain.

Question Two

The Saudi Electronic University (SEU) has 3 branches namely central office, Male Branch and Female Branch in Riyadh. The central office is connected to each of its branches through high-speed serial WAN links. Male Branch and Female Branch each has 2 department: Theology & Technical. Each department has its own LAN, which is connected to the main router of the branch.

You’ve been hired by SEU to assist them in developing an IP addressing scheme, and you’ve been given the network address 192.168.20.0/24 to begin with. You are also given a list of networks addressing requirements below:

Conditions:

Male Branch’s Theology requires 4 hosts

Female Branch’s Theology requires 4 hosts

Male Branch’s Technical requires 4 hosts

Female Branch’s Technical requires 4 hosts

The link from Male Branch to central office requires and (Internet Protocol) IP address for each end of the link.

The assignment for this paper is to write a short essay of

The assignment for this paper is to write a short essay of 1000-1500 words, normally 3-4 typed pages, on one of the following topics. Make sure your essay has a good argument (thesis, main idea). Use specific details from the text and explain why those details are important for your argument. Do not use outside sources except for factual information or ideas necessary for developing your argument; be sure to cite the sources that you use. And be sure to include the text you are writing about in a Works Cited page.

Topic for essay, Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami:

Suicides and other deaths: The novel contains lots of deaths. Most are suicides: Kizuki, Naoko’s sister, Naoko, and later Hatsumi. But there are also the long slow deaths of Midori’s mother and father. Write an essay in which you argue for your understanding of the role death plays in the novel and why it is so prominent. That could include one or both of Toru’s two main responses: that “Death exists, not as the opposite but as a part of life” (25; compare 273) and his statement to the dead Kizuki in chapter 11: “So you finally made Naoko yours . . . But in this world, in this imperfect world of the living, I did the best I could for Naoko” (276). Be sure to present a strong argument. Be specific: use specific details from the text and explain why those details are important for your argument.

General Instructions

In the introductory paragraph you must provide:

A general introduction to the specific topic you are writing about (this is not an introduction to the text itself but to the topic in the text[s]). You must assume that your readers have already read the text(s), which means that you should not give a plot summary. Be sure to focus on the topic, not on how you found it and decided to write about it. This is a paper about the topic, not about the process by which you discovered the topic.

A narrowing from the topic itself to the specific approach you intend to take on the topic. What do your readers need to know before they can understand your thesis statement?

Your thesis (argument). The thesis statement is one coherent sentence that states the central argument of the paper in a way that shows why that argument is important to your overall reading of the text(s). If you do not condense your reading of the chosen text(s) into one concise sentence, you have no thesis statement. Do not give three main points with your thesis; let them appear paragraph by paragraph as your argument unfolds. Build to your later arguments and conclusion; don’t give away your whole argument at the beginning by stating your main points. It’s like saying “I’m going to tell you a mystery story about the death of Christopher Marlowe. His best friends killed him. Now I will tell you how it happened. NO! Even with an academic argument, build to your conclusion step by step.

See my sample at the end of these instructions for a good introductory paragraph.

In each of your body paragraphs, you must provide:

A transition word, phrase. or sentence that introduces a key point from the text(s) that will be the subject of that paragraph. (Remember, paragraphs must flow from one idea to the next, and organization is the only way of preserving that flow.) Make each topic sentence a brief introduction to a different aspect of the main argument. This transition word, phrase, or sentence should be at the beginning of the paragraph on that topic, not at the end of the previous paragraph.

A textual proof (almost always a short quotation) that best illustrates a key point that you mentioned in the transition sentence. (Any paragraph that does not contain a proof is merely paraphrase or summary and not an analytical treatment.) Use at least one key piece of evidence from your text(s) in every single body paragraph. (You may use additional pieces of evidence as well.)

Analytical discussion that links the textual evidence that you have provided with the overall thesis that you have delineated in the introductory paragraph. After each quotation you must

Explain what is being said in the quotation that links it to your overall thesis. (Don’t just summarize it. What is being said at a deeper level in relation to the text and your argument?)

Address what the author of the text is doing with the quotation, what he or she hopes to accomplish with the evidence provided by the quoted passage.

Illustrate how the quotation fits in with/proves your thesis as stated in the opening paragraph of the paper.

In your conclusion:

Do not, under any circumstances, repeat the argument that you presented in the body of your paper! Instead . . . .

Posit a new reading or understanding of the topic in light of the argument that you’ve just provided. Ask “How should the reader of your text now view the text(s) based on your argument on the issue you have been discussing?” That may simply means moving from your specific topic to how it might affect a reading of the text(s) as a whole.

Rules to remember:

MLA format and citation (or some other standard format and citation) apply—make sure you introduce each quotation and provide the appropriate citation for that quotation or idea. Your paper must have a Works Cited list or Bibliography even if you are citing only the original literary text(s). See a sample MLA first page and Works Cited page on the last page of these instructions.

Stay away from “I” statements and general phrases (e.g., “in society today,” “in conclusion.” “since the beginning of time”)—they mean nothing.

Do not shift your discussion away from the text(s) that you’ve chosen. You should never, in an analytical assignment, discuss “society” or your personal experiences (including how you came to choose the topic or how you feel about the text[s]). Stay rooted in the text(s)! Discussions of “society” and your personal experiences are relevant only as they provide specific support for your thesis and do not distract from your discussion of the text(s) you are writing about.

Saying “I will argue/show” in your introduction is not a real thesis statement. You must nail down the argument of your paper about your text(s), not generalize about what you hope to establish in your paper. (That is a strong point for many academic readers, including the original author of these instructions, who studies medieval literature. However, from my own reading of scholarly articles in English Renaissance literature, I know that very often critics and scholars do exactly that. But it is almost always done at key points of defining what the paper will do.)[supanova_question]

SUBJECT: A New Expansion Opportunity in China

Alteryx Inc. is a very respected company in data science and analytics (Alteryx, 2021). With more than 23 years of experience in this field, has a reputable track record in helping more than 150,000 companies change their data into helpful information, as well as the creation of cutting edge data analysis soft wares (Reuters, 2021).

I am pleased to inform you about the new expansion opportunity I have identified for Alteryx Inc. in the Peoples’ Republic of China. According to World Bank, China is a very populous country with a population of 1.398 Billion people in the year 2019. China has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, with an increasing number of companies every day and companies shifting their production to this country due to the cheap production overheads. China has one of the highest numbers of consumers globally; hence companies will ultimately continue growing and expanding in this country and economy.

It is with this information that I recommend an expansion of our services in this country. With our vast knowledge and expertise in data science and analytics, we are in the best position to help these companies venturing into China. We can set up new operations in Beijing and develop strategies for incorporating these companies in our system and help them analyze their data, especially on the competitiveness, growth, production, and business-related information from any source whatsoever.

Enter the following column headings in the first row: Element, Atomic number, melting point (?), melting point (K), boiling point (?), boiling point (K), Density (g/mL), Radius (?), Ionization Energy (IE)(eV), Electronegativity (EN), Electron Affinity ((EA) kJ/mol). You will analyze data for the following elements: Halogens (F to I), alkali metals (Li to Cs), all period 2 elements1 , and all period 4 elements, i.e. 31 elements overall. 2. Use any online resource or any textbook to find the above data 3. Enter the data in your data table.

Part II. Plotting Data Using Excel, make the following graphs:

1. Atomic radius of period 2 elements vs. atomic number

2. Atomic radius of period 4 elements vs. atomic number

3. Atomic radius of alkali metals vs. atomic number

4. Ionization energy of period 2 elements vs. atomic number

5. Ionization energy of period 4 elements vs. atomic number

6. Melting points and boiling points of the alkali metals vs. atomic number (two curves on one graph)

7. Melting points and boiling points of the halogens vs. atomic number (two curves on one graph)

8. Boiling points of period 2 elements vs. atomic number

9. Density of halogens vs. boiling points

10.Electronegativity of period 2 elements vs. atomic number

11.Electron Affinity of period 4 main-group elements vs. atomic number

12.Electronegativity of halogens vs. atomic number

Pick any 4 from the above!

Your graphs should be scatter plots with straight lines and markers. You should have all 12 graphs with figure captions. Send any 4 graphs of your choice and the data table to your TA. Copy and paste the 4 graphs in a word, should have max 2 pages. One page with data table, one page with 4 graphs.

Each graph must have:

a title (including the graph #)

axes labels

vertical and horizontal gridlines

a figure caption

In the figure caption, describe and explain the trend and any exceptions to the trend (no more than 3 sentences). If there is no clear trend, just state that there is none. To understand graph 7, see figure 12.17 in ref. 2. To understand graph 9, consider the physical states of the elements. For graph 12, see ref. 3. Figure 1 below provides an example of a graph and figure caption.

For example:

Figure 1. Ionization energy increases across period 2 with the exceptions of boron (B) and oxygen (O). B has a smaller IE than beryllium because its highest energy electron is in the p sublevel and well shielded by electrons in the s sublevel and core electrons. O has a smaller IE than nitrogen because its highest energy electron is paired and removing it relieves the repulsion.[supanova_question]

The Stages of Consultation & Collaboration Reflection Caplan’s views on consultation and

The Stages of Consultation & Collaboration Reflection

Caplan’s views on consultation and collaboration are different in the people involved and their responsibilities. Caplan explains that consultation involves a therapist and a client. Focusing on the personal issues of the client with guidance from the therapist Dougherty (2013). The goal is to find solutions that will benefit the client. Collaboration is viewed as a balanced power from all parties involved in the issue. The goal of the collaboration is to find solutions that will benefit everyone.

In consultation, the consultant can recommend and supply the consultee with resources. For example, on my campus, I have a school counselor who meets with my team of teachers and discusses solutions to types of bullying. The counselor provided techniques to implement in our lesson and ask to keep data using surveys. The counselor had the teachers pick two techniques that will be used in the classroom and share data every three weeks. For the evaluation, the consultant reviewed and discuss the results from the techniques used. The feedback allowed for teachers to make adjustments if needed. The consultant improved my classroom environment by providing resources and modeling new techniques. Collaboration is where all people involved have an input towards the outcome on an issue. For instance, in my previous experience, I had a student who was in the special education program but was in a traditional classroom setting for half of the day. I collaborated with the school counselor and an inclusive specialist. We met every other week to discuss goals and outcomes. The counselor put in place the modifications and accommodations that are designed to be implemented in the classroom. Also determines how many times and days will be needed to be delivered. The specialist role was to show me how to implement the techniques. Also, keep data on the progress of each technique used on the student. I made sure I delivered the service to the student and documented if techniques were beneficial or needed to be applied. This shows all roles are needed to help reach a successful outcome for the student. Each holds responsibility and relies on the other for the goal.

As a result, Caplan states collaboration work better than a consultation in the field of education. In the consultation, the consultee chooses what he/ she decides to discuss. This gives the consultee the responsibility to only what the consultant can help with Dougherty (2013). In collaboration, teachers, school counselors, behavior specialists, intervention, assistant principals are all involved. They also share equal responsibility we presented an issue. Collaboration provides both direct and indirect services for the student. For instance, direct services student individual achievement meetings and collecting student records. Indirect services include analyze school-wide test results and holding a professional development meeting SAT scores for staff.

Caplan categorizes the types of consultations for administration, client, consultee, consultant, and program. He labels the chart by focusing on the level, target, and goal Dougherty (2013). This elaborates how each one will benefit in their case. Unlike collaboration where Caplan states all will benefit. Collaboration is set to be a greater tool implemented in the education system. Each person provides their specialty based on their profession and can take credit for results.

Stages of Consultation & Collaboration Reflection

The information on consultation and collaboration suggests that these services are continuing to evolve into even more important elements in the practice of many professionals and that they are becoming progressively scientifically based. According to Caplan, consultation can be defined as helping consultees deal with their current problems but also give information or teach skills that will help them deal effectively with similar problems in the future. One goal of consultation is to ultimately allow the consultee to work independently, a more hands-off experience. An example of consultation would be a process of two professional persons, a teacher as the consultee and counselor as the consultant, draw from the consultants help on a difficult topic such as a student experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Collaboration is very similar to consultation in that, as a separate service, it follows the same problem-solving process. Dougherty (2013) discusses collaboration used as a service to assist youth, families, community agencies, and com-munities themselves. Collaboration is seen as more hands-on in helping one another in the client system as part of a “team”. For example, collaboration can simply be described as one professional establishing a partnership with another member in a community field or expertise. The main difference between consultation and collaboration is in consultation the consultee maintains responsibility for the outcome of the problem brought to consultation, while in collaboration the collaborator, along with other team members, retains responsibility for one or more aspects related to the outcome of the case.

Mental health consultation and collaboration involves and consultation can be beneficial in both education and mental health, to improve upon remediation and prevention. In the education field, collaboration may be more useful for all staff and administration working with students. Educational collaboration, described by Dougherty (2013), is an interactive, problem-solving process involving two or more team members. This type of collaboration can take place on a much broader scale. Mental health consultation and collaboration involves and consultation can be beneficial in both education and mental health, varying on the degree of emphasis.

Stages of Consultation & Collaboration Reflection

The main difference between collaboration and consultation is the amount of responsibility placed on a role. In a collaboration, the specialist that helps is given more responsibility for reaching the goal of the services. Also, they are responsible for making sure everyone is doing their part in the collaboration.

An example of consultation, I always go back to being a teacher. I had a student that was acting out and I received advice and guidance from the counselor. Since she was not directly helping the student and guiding me that is consultation.

An example of a collaboration, is when I am working with a special ed student. There is a team of us working together to help reach his/her academic goals. Sometimes we have outside specialist come into the school to help us. Since we are all working together towards the same goal this would be a collaboration.

Collaboration might work better in the mental health field because the practitioner/specialist has more responsibilities with the clients and actually joins in with the treatments. The specialist can see more details about what is going on with the client and provide more support. They can also make decisions that will benefit the client. The collaborating specialist takes primary responsibility for the mental health outcome of the case or program and equal responsibility for the overall outcome of the case or program (Caplan et al.,1994 as cited in Dougherty, 2013).

Stages of Consultation & Collaboration Reflection

Consultation is used when the consultant and consultee meet to assist the client system. In this partnership, the consultant is the expert, and the consultee is relying on their expertise to problem-solve. In consultation, the consultant holds most of the responsibility in the success of the partnership. If the consultee is not experienced in the situation, the whole process will not be successful. For example, in consultation, a school counselor can offer advice or train a teacher regarding a student with behavioral problems. The consultant is developing solutions that the consultee is implementing to the third party. Since the consultant is not working directly with client systems, it is important for the consultant to truly understand the situation and needs of the consultee.

Collaboration is when participants are working together in the planning and implementing process. The ownership is shared between all involved and each person is giving more direct services to the client system. Instead of one person having the expertise in a consultation model, each collaborator is considered an expert. For example, when participating in RTI meetings, this is a collaboration. I am the teacher (expert) who is implementing in class interventions, documenting, and observing the student. The reading interventionist pulls the student to provide more support. The counselor also is involved when discussing the child regarding interventions and steps to increase the child’s attendance and communicate with the family. Each of us act as consultants in this collaboration. Our end goal is to improve the academic success of the child. We will accomplish this by working together.

Collaboration is useful in a school setting because most of the collaborators are on the same campus. Many schools have counselors, interventionists, diagnosticians, phycologists, etc. Splitting the responsibility and working together as a group can be helpful to the students and families. Collaboration gives each stakeholder more responsibility.  In a collaboration, parties feel more social support, feel more productive, and have access to more tools (Dougherty, 2013).

Neonicotinoid Toxicology Article Summary
De Perre, C., Murphy, T. M., & Lydy, M. J. (2015). Fate and effects of clothianidin in fields using conservation practices. Environmental toxicology and chemistry, 34(2), 258-265. Major points:

The Fate and toxicity of clothianidin used every other year like a corn seed- coating at two different rates, 0.25 mg/seed, and 0.50 mg/seed, in an agricultural field undergoing a corn-soybean annual rotation and conservation tillage.

Clothianidin was at low concentrations in soil and water throughout the 2-years corn and soybean rotation.

Low and no-tillage got a slight or no impact on clothianidin concentrations.

Laboratory toxicity bioassays got tested on nontarget species.

Risk quotients got determined from clothianidin concentrations evaluated in the

field and compared with the laboratory toxicity bioassay findings to evaluate the

environmental risk of the insecticide.

The risk quotient got discovered to be lesser than the level of concern for C.

dilutus, which was the most vulnerable species tested.

No short-term environmental risks got anticipated for the species considered in

the research.

While clothianidin got detected in soil, runoff water, infiltration water, and

groundwater, the concentrations should not present a severe risk to the species used in this study for any of the 0.25 mg/seed and 0.50 mg/seed seed-coating rates.

Major points:

Thiamethoxam is a neonicotinoid insecticide that is widely used in agriculture

Compilation of 30 previously unpublished studies about thiamethoxam toxicity

Looked at acute and chronic toxicity on freshwater and marine primary producers, invertebrates, and fish

Constructed species-specific distributions for acute exposure to thiamethoxam concentrations using highest concentration with no effect, lowest concentration with a noticeable effect, concentration that caused immobility in 50% of individuals, and concentration that caused death in 50% of individuals

Not enough studies and information on chronic exposure to conduct species-specific distributions

Found that aquatic primary producers, fish, and most aquatic invertebrates were not sensitive to thiamethoxam

Found that most aquatic insects and some aquatic invertebrates, mainly crustaceans, were sensitive to thiamethoxam, but still at higher concentrations than recorded in surface waters

Concluded that thiamethoxam levels found in surface waters are not high enough to cause significant effects in the aquatic species studied

Major Points:

Created an artificial pond with optimal conditions for Mayfly growth in all enclosures. All enclosures were checked for any unwanted chemical contaminations

Each enclosure had a different concentration of Thiamethoxam, this was constantly monitored throughout the experiment. All results were compared to a control.

The varying concentrations of Thiamethoxam were 0.1, 0.3, 1.0, 3.0, and 10.0 ?g/L. These concentrations were based on previous studies for Mayfly sensitivity and the concentrations of Thiamethoxam found in surface waters.

The larval stage of the Mayflies and the adult emergence were measure by counting the larvae and trapping the adults.

The data illustrated a significant impact on the populations of Mayfly at the 1.0, 3.0, and 10.0 ?g/L concentrations of Thiamethoxam.

No significant impact could be seen in the 0.1 and the 0.3 ?g/L concentrations of Thiamethoxam.

Prior research showed that insects were more sensitive to the concentrations of Thiamethoxam compared to aquatic primary producers and fish. Among these the mayfly was seen to be the most sensitive.

The 95th percentile of Thiamethoxam concentrations in surface waters observed in the United States and Europe had a concentration of 0.054 ?g/L. It was concluded that it was highly unlikely that the Mayfly populations would be impacted.

Detections of the Neonicotinoid Insecticide Imidacloprid in Surface Waters of Three Agricultural Regions of California, USA, 2010-2011

Starner Keith, Goh Kean S., 2012, Detections of the Neonicotinoid Insecticide Imidacloprid in Surface Waters of Three Agricultural Regions of California, Springer Sci+Business media, 88:316- 321

Major Points:

2-year study in California

Collected 75 samples from 23 monitoring sites in 3 major regions with surface water areas tied to irrigation systems from agricultural sites

Conducted chemical analysis of surface water samples, using US EPA metric for imidacloprid contamination and toxicity

Detected imidacloprid contamination 67 out of the 75 samples

14 of the 67 samples exceeded the US EPA’s chronic invertebrate aquatic life benchmark

Imidacloprid concentrations were highest in samples from agricultural regions with high levels of neonicotinoid insecticide use

Exceedance frequency was highest in the region with the highest detection frequency

Imidacloprid use in urban areas was not considered

Concluded that agricultural use and irrigation of imidacloprid leads to acute toxicity in aquatic invertebrates

Cavallaro, Michael C., et al. 2018. Community-Level and Phenological Responses of Emerging Aquatic Insects Exposed to 3 Neonicotinoid Insecticides: An in Situ Wetland Limnocorral Approach. Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry 37:2401–2412.

Major Points:

107-day dosing and recovery study of neonicotinoids on aquatic insects in a wetland portion of St. Denis National Wildlife Area.

Study was conducted to understand the effects of imidacloprid, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam on aquatic insect phenology and communities.

Species-specific lifecycle events (phenology) can be negatively impacted by neonicotinoid pesticides contained in the runoff from farmland.

This study was essentially the field based mesocosm replication of former laboratory studies to determine, “real world” results with uncontrolled physiochemical variables.

Results of study could influence the decisions of regulatory agencies concerning acceptable neonicotinoid pesticide use and their appropriate levels.

11 of the 39 taxa of aquatic insect studied represented 97% of the total number of emerging adult insects.

Found that of the 3 neonicotinoids tested thiamethoxam was the least toxic and that imidacloprid and clothianidin, were more toxic and had similar effects.

This study determined that imidacloprid and clothianidin can begin to negatively affect phenology and community structure at higher levels than the aquatic life benchmarks.

Barmentlo, S. H., Parmentier, E. M., de Snoo, G. R., & Vijver, M. G. (2018). Thiacloprid- induced toxicity influenced by nutrients: Evidence from in situ bioassays in experimental ditches. Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 37(7), 1907–1915.

Major Points

In the field of environmental toxicology researchers can be challenged to
obtain accurate laboratory results of toxic effects on aquatic
biota. This study is especially important to environmental toxicology because it helps to improve aquatic laboratory experiments.

The purpose of this experiment was to observe if neonicotinoids and nutrients can affect aquatic species fitness level.

The key factors of this experiment was to observe the importance of nutrients
and to address the discrepancies of laboratories who use nutrients as a static feeding regime to emulate real aquatic conditions.

Experimenters used 36 ditches, 2 crustacean species and 2 insect
species. Researchers used a caged aquatic environment mixed with nutrients and neonicotinoid thiacloprid to measure their combined effects.

The chemical solution thiacloprid was administered evenly over each ditch to emulate spray drift and homogenization to realistically portray natural ecological conditions. Each week the ditches were observed for changes in temperature, pH, conductivity, and oxygen levels

The experiment recorded the survival, growth and emergence of the 4 aquatic species in the toxic environment to measure if nutrients increased the level of fitness in toxic conditions.

The study findings show nutrient enriched conditions in ecotoxic aquatic environments can decrease toxic effects on aquatic organisms.

Researchers ended with the conclusion that aquatic biodiversity may decrease with the reduction of nutrient emissions in aquatic environments. The
experiment also showed the importance of nutrient enrichment for
combating neonicotinoid toxicity.

This project also shed a new light into environmental lab procedures in biology as it showed different feeding regimes are required to accurately measure thiacloprid toxic effects to better emulate lower nutrient loadings mirroring realistic field conditions.

Neonicotinoid Toxicology Article Summary: Effects of the Neonicotinoid Acetamiprid in Pollenon Bombus impatiens Microcolony Development

Reference Citation: Camp, Batres, M. A., Williams, W. C., Koethe, R. W., Stoner, K. A., & Lehmann, D. M. (2020). Effects of the Neonicotinoid Acetamiprid in Pollen on Bombus impatiens Microcolony Development. Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 39(12), 2560–2569. https://doi.org/10.1002/etc.4886

Major Points:

?  The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a neonicotinoid called acetamiprid on Bombus impatiens. The growth, development, nest productivity, and drone production.

?  B. impatiens and other wild bee species have experienced population decline in the past few decades. It is suspected that neonicotinoids may be a factor behind the decreasing population.

?  Not many researchers have conducted a study regarding acetamiprid so this was the first published study of the effects of acetamiprid on bumble bees.

?  Microcolonies were created by separating worker bees into groups of 5 bees and placed in a ventilated chamber.

?  The bees were first fed uncontaminated syrup and pollen for the first two weeks then acetamiprid-contaminated pollen was introduced to the bees. The control group was not fed any contaminated pollen.

?  Before the exposure of acetamiprid, serial dilutions were made to make the treatment pollen. Concentrations of 0.452, 4.52, 45.2, 452, and 4,520 ?g/kg were made during the serial dilutions.

?  Results showed microcolonies exposed to the highest concentration of acetamiprid have significantly reduced pupal cells during weeks 4, 5, and 6. Nest weight exposed to the highest concentration of acetamiprid declined as well.

?  Microcolonies showed a trend in weight gain from the normal syrup and pollen then weight loss after acetamiprid was introduced.

?  4,520 ?g/kg group was the only group that contained more dead larvae present than live larvae resulting in adverse effects on colony growth.

?  The increased larval mortality reduced nest food requirement which resulted in the decrease of food consumption.

?  Bees’ high sensitivity to acetamiprid can be due to the differences in p450 enzyme expression and activity between life stages.

?  The conclusion suggests that at concentrations above the threshold has the potential to reduce Bombus impatiens microcolony growth, drone production, and nest productivity which is evidence that acetamiprid is a factor in the decline of bee population.

Neonicotinoid Toxicology Article Summary:
Kawahata I, Yamakuni T. Imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide, facilitates tyrosine hydroxylase transcription and phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase mRNA expression to enhance catecholamine synthesis and its nicotine-evoked elevation in PC12D cells. Toxicology. 2018 Feb 1;394:84-92. doi: 10.1016/j.tox.2017.12.004. Epub 2017 Dec 12. PMID: 29246838. Major Points:

Imidacloprid acts as an agonist binding to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in target insects and overactivation of these receptors can drive catecholamine synthesis and secretion in adrenal chromaffin cells. This can cause a wide range of health problems in mammals.

They focused their interests on the synthesizing genes: tyrosine hydroxylase because it is a rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of catecholamines and phenylethanolamine N- methyltransferase since it is the synthesizing enzyme of adrenaline.

They used cultured PC12D cells and rat adrenal chromaffin cells to study the mechanisms of catecholamine synthesis and secretion along with transcriptional expression of genes.

They compared the physiological responses of the added concentrations of 3, 30, 100 ?m of ACh, nicotine, and imidacloprid to PC12D cells to see the effects on tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) transcription.

They found that the 30 ?m of imidacloprid of ACh and nicotine enhanced the transcriptional activity of tyrosine hydroxylase. As the concentrations of imidacloprid increased, transcriptional activity of tyrosine hydroxylase also was enhanced.

They also wanted to see what intracellular pathways were affected so they added 10 ?m of inhibitors: H-89 and C3 to the PC12D cells containing nicotine and imidacloprid.

They concluded PKA-mediated signaling and the RhoA-dependent pathways were the intracellular pathways that were affected.

From these pathways, they were able to conclude imidacloprid promotes expression of the catecholamine synthesizing genes, tyrosine hydroxylase, and phenylethanolamine N- methyltransferase. They also found that nicotine enhanced the transcriptional activity of phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase.

The researchers also concluded that although imidacloprid functions as a partial agonist, at low concentrations, it can still have a detrimental impact on the cholinergic system found in mammalian brains.

Therefore, by examining the adverse impacts of how imidacloprid over-activates the mammalian peripheral catecholaminergic system; one can conclude that imidacloprid poses a neurotoxicity risk to animals since it causes health problems.

Neonicotinoid Toxicology Article Summary: Hummingbirds and Bumble Bees Exposed to Neonicotinoid and Organophosphate Insecticides in the Fraser Valley, British Columbia, Canada

Reference Citation:

Bishop CA, Moran AJ, Toshack MC, Elle E, Maisonneuve F, Elliott JE. Hummingbirds and bumble bees exposed to neonicotinoid and organophosphate insecticides in the Fraser Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Environ Toxicol Chem. 2018 Aug;37(8):2143-2152
Major Points:

?  The overall purpose of this study was to measure the presence of neonicotinoids and other pesticides in cloacal fluid and fecal pellets collected from Rufous (Selasphorus rufus) and Anna’s (Calypte anna) hummingbirds in addition to Bumble bee (Invertebrate pollinators) and pollen collection native to Canada on conventionally sprayed and organic blueberry farms.

?  2 year study conducted near Blueberry Fields in Fraser River Valley and Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada in addition to on-farm exposure sites.

?  Cloacal fluid and fecal pellets were collected from Hummingbirds from 2 reference sites into one pooled sample for analysis. Samples used to determine level of pesticide exposure were collected from Hummingbirds who were trapped in Hall traps within conventionally sprayed blueberry fields.

?  Bumble bees, pollen, and blueberry flowers and leaves were collected from 6 conventionally sprayed blueberry farms and analyzed by site and sample type.

?  Anna’s Hummingbirds produced 30-60 ?L of cloacal fluid whereas Rufous Hummingbirds produced 5-60 ?L. Samples were stored in 1-mL vials, placed on ice in light controlled conditions within 2 minutes of collection, and stored at -5°C within 5 hours of collection.

?  Field collections of bumble bees were conducted over a 12 day period in the middle of the blooming season. 3 most abundant species of worker bees were the major focus of this data collection from 12 blueberry farms (6 conventional and 6 organic): B. mixtus, B. flavifrons, B. melanopygus.

?  Temperatures and wind conditions were controlled during bumble bee and pollen collection. Bees were stored in vials, placed on ice packs in light controlled conditions immediately after collection, and stored at -80°C until they were transferred onto dry ice and shipped to the laboratory for analysis.

?  Pollen was collected from different worker bees but following the same protocol, 5 times during and after blueberry bloom. Pollen was removed from each bee and stored in light controlled conditions at -80°C. Pollen samples were pooled to reach a max amount of 0.5g collected from conventional fields and 0.7g from organic fields.

?  All flowers and leaves were collected for analysis at the same time approximately 25-50m from the field edge from 10 blueberry bushes. Leaves and flowers were then placed on ice packs in light controlled conditions immediately after collection and stored at -10°C before shipment and laboratory analysis.

?  Results showed the detection of 3 neonicotinoid compounds in cloacal fluids of hummingbird samples in addition to pollen and blueberry flower samples from conventionally sprayed blueberry fields. There were no pesticide or neonicotinoid levels measured in bumble bees.

?  In conclusion, the wide range of pesticide exposure unveiled enhances our understanding of pesticide exposure and how this can alter the lifestyle and health of bird species and pollinator species.

Neonicotinoid Toxicology Article Summary: Toxicity of Imidacloprid to the Stingless Bee Scaptotrigona postica Latreille, 1807 (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

Soares, H. M., Jacob, C. R., Carvalho, S. M., Nocelli, R. C., & Malaspina, O. (2015). Toxicity of imidacloprid to the stingless bee Scaptotrigona Postica Latreille, 1807 (hymenoptera: Apidae). Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 94(6), 675–680.

Major Points:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of insecticides that affect the survival of stingless bees. Specifically, the researchers focused on neonicotinoid imidacloprid toxicity on stingless bee Scaptotrigona postic.

There is very limited data on the effects and risk of imidacloprid on stingless bees, because the honeybee has been the primary organism of toxicological study.

The researchers anticipated that there will be some effect on the stingless bee and the goal of the researchers is to discover to what extent imidacloprid effects the Scaptotrigona postic.

Imidacloprid was applied to the bees topically and dietary. For the topical application, a solution was prepared with imidacloprid and acetone. The solution was diluted with a range of 150 to 0.01 ng a.i/?L. For the oral assessment, a contaminated diet was prepared with imidacloprid in acetone. The solution was diluted with seven dietary treatments.

After, the effects of the insecticide were examined along with the lethal dose and lethal concentration.

The LD50 values were 25.2 and 24.5 ng and the LC50 values were 42.5 and 14.3 ng at 24 and 48 h. There was a minor difference for LD50 that was administered topically. LC50 showed the greater variation with the imidacloprid being administered orally.

Topical exposure at 24 and 48h was more toxic to Scaptotrigona postic than 24h dietary exposure. However, 48h dietary exposure showed the greatest toxicity possibly linked to activation during metabolism.

Topical and oral treatments had similar symptoms such as tremors, paralysis, and death.

The researchers concluded there is indeed a vulnerability to imidacloprid on stingless bees considering the mortality rate increased as the imidacloprid concentration increased.

Researchers propose future areas of study should include how imidacloprid affects other bee species due to the wide array of behavioral and physiological attributes that can vary among species.[supanova_question]

HW#4 Astronomy

Explore the internet (or books or magazines) to find your favorite image related to astrobiology. Then:
Write a short paragraph (3-4 sentences) stating the science content of the image. Specifically, explain (i) what the image is about, and (ii) how the image is connected to astrobiology (not just astronomy or biology). How is it related to what we’ve been learning in this course? If it is an astronomy image, like a Hubble Space Telescope image of a galaxy or nebula, make sure you explain the connection to life: How is the image related to the origin, evolution, or search for life?
Then in a second paragraph, very briefly explain why you chose the image (2-3 sentences is fine).
Obviously, include the image in your assignment (put it at the start). Be sure to fully cite the source of the image (URL) and give proper credit to whoever created the image. Put this right at the top of your homework. Be sure to run a spelling checker on you document to make sure you don’t lose points for typos and dumb things like that

Please review the following instructions and video on how to make your own pH indicator from red cabbage at home! A pH indicator can be in liquid or paper form, and are added to various solutions to determine the pH value. This red cabbage solution is in liquid form, and will be added directly to some household solutions. How much the color changes can tell you whether something is an acid or a base, as well as the value of the pH.
Dr Dunn’s Procedure Video (Links to an external site.)
Procedure and Data collection video (see below):

MATERIALS
1 head of red cabbage
Pot to boil water in (or blender)
Strainer or colander
Glass bowl
clear cups or glasses
Three household liquids to test (choose three of the following: vinegar, baking soda, juices, soaps, clear sodas, sugar, salt). Do not use bleach or ammonia as suggested in the video. Please check with me to use any additional household liquids. If you have solids, please dissolve in ~0.5 – 1 cup of water and dissolve the solid prior to adding the red cabbage juice.
Something to stir with
PROCEDURE
Take your red cabbage and cut off about 2-3 cups (the amount doesn’t need to be exact, the more cabbage, the more indicator you will get).
Boil a pot of water and place the cabbage pieces in. Bring the water back to a boil for a 2-3 minutes (you want to see the water turn a purple-blue color). Turn heat off and let sit for at least 10 minutes. (Alternatively, you can also place the cabbage in a blender with water to avoid boiling).
Strain the water out into a glass bowl and let cool to room temperature.
Once it has cooled, pour some into clear cups or glasses and add different liquids to test.
Gently stir or swirl the solution and see what happens!

Psychology Question

PSYC 2302: Social Experience Assignments
In this course, you will write a series of short (no more than two double-spaced pages) Social Experience assignments. The purpose of this assignment is:
to point out the relevance of social psychology to everyday life
to stimulate critical thinking about social psychology
to give you an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of course concepts

Guidelines
You must complete three of these SE papers over the course of the semester. You can do one over any chapter, but you must submit the paper during the week we cover that chapter. I will not accept papers over topics from previous week’s chapters! You should choose one specific major concept that you would like to write about from the chapter we are covering that week. You are free to select any process, phenomenon, theory, or psychological tendency that is relevant to the material we’re currently covering in class that week in class. Your textbook and the material discussed in lecture will be helpful in generating ideas for you to write about. Be more specific than the title of the chapter. For example, if you want to discuss aggression, you need to be more specific.
Once you’ve selected a concept, your assignment is to write about how it relates to a recent event in your life. The body of each entry should begin with a description of an event or experience in your life in four or five sentences. A page-long story about how you spent your weekend is too long, and one line reading, “I went out with my friends” is insufficient. You should pick a specific event or interaction and describe it in enough detail so that your subsequent discussion will make sense to someone who was not there. If you can’t apply the concept to an event in your own life, you can also write about events you’ve heard about from other people, current events in the news, or even interactions that you watched on TV. Next you should describe how the social psychology concept you have chosen is relevant to this event. Once you’ve made the connection between the experience you described and the concept you’ve chosen, the rest of your discussion should address some (but not necessarily all) of the following questions:
How does your current awareness of this psychological phenomenon change the way you interpret what happened during this event?
If you (or others) had been aware of social psychological research about this phenomenon during the event, how might the outcome of the interaction have been changed?
How will your learning about this phenomenon influence your attitudes/behavior/perceptions in the future?
What questions do you now have after considering the event in light of psychological theory?
What type of experiment(s) might help address these issues? Don’t be too formal – just a couple of sentences about research idea will be sufficient.
You can also discuss an event that seems to be inconsistent with the topic you have chosen to write about. In such cases, you might also want to consider some (but not necessarily all) of the following questions:
How was this interaction inconsistent with the theory or phenomenon you have chosen?
Why do you think the outcome of this interaction seems to be inconsistent with the phenomenon you chose?
What aspects of the situation, if changed, would have resulted in a less surprising outcome?
What type of experiment(s) might help answer these questions?

Format
Here are some general guidelines you should keep in mind in order to get full credit for your work:
The top of your entry should list the specific concept you’ve chosen to write about
Your entry should be typed, spellchecked, and absolutely no more than one single-spaced page. One shorter paragraph summarizing the experience and one longer paragraph of discussion is a good model to follow.
Don’t change margin widths, font sizes, or line spacing. These are really obvious attempts to make your work seem longer than it really is, and I’m very experienced at spotting them.
You can use the Sample SE Assignments I’ve posted on Blackboard as a template for your writing. If you’re concerned about formatting issues, reach out to me and I’ll be happy to show you what an acceptable entry should look like.
Late/Emailed Assignments
You can always turn SE assignments in early (in the week, not weeks ahead of when we cover a chapter), but late/emailed assignments will not be accepted. If your paper is late (or emailed) it will not be accepted. To ensure that you are able to post your assignment before the window is closed, DON’T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE to complete your submission. Keep in mind that the likelihood of technical failures seems to be positively correlated with waiting till the last minute to submit an assignment. If you run into technical difficulties (laptop battery dies, computer crashes, Blackboard is down, etc) at the last minute, you will be unable to submit your assignment. YOU are responsible for getting these turned in and doing what is necessary to ensure that you can overcome any technological obstacles you may face. Late assignments will not be accepted.
Final Remarks
I look forward to reading about your experiences with social psychology! I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about yourself and about social psychology. Be creative and challenge yourself. These SE assignments will give you a chance to process the course material on a deeper and more meaningful level, which is a good way to practice the critical thinking skills you’ll need to succeed on the exams.
“Nothing relevant happened to me this week” is not an excuse for not writing. Remember, you can always write about something that happened to you previously or about something that happened to someone you know. If all else fails, watch any TV sitcom or reality TV show for a half-hour and you’re bound to find good material to write about. Fiction is full social psychological material.
Make sure the topic you choose is specific and interesting enough to be useful to you and your learning about social psychology. Something like “this interaction is relevant because I made an attribution” is not informative or very sophisticated. Writing “in this interaction I made a self-serving attribution that allowed me to maintain high self-esteem” conveys more information, deals with a more specific phenomenon, and is more interesting to read.
Remember that these assignments are not anonymous. Don’t write about anything you would be embarrassed to have me read, and please don’t write about any involvement you may have had with illegal activities.

EVAUATION OF YOUR ESSAY

Your paper will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:

• Presentation of your ideas (e.g., writing style, organization, clarity of exposition)
• Strength of your arguments and analyses
• Creativity in dealing with the problems or issues being addressed
• Plausibility of the views or positions you defend
• Overall understanding of the issues you are discussing

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS, INSTRUCTIONS AND ADVICE

Before Writing

One of the keys to writing a good paper is to be clear about what you want to say. You should, therefore, try to get as clear as you can about your topic before you start writing. Your views might evolve as you go along – that is to be expected – but, if you don’t have some objectives in mind before starting to write, you will have nothing to give you direction.

You should definitely make an outline of your essay, and you should plan on writing several drafts. You cannot expect to write a good paper in one draft. You may discuss your topic with other students in the class, as this is often a very helpful and enjoyable way to develop ideas. In the end, of course, you must write your paper yourself.

Points of Style

Remember that you are writing an essay and so, obviously, you must write in complete sentences with appropriate paragraph breaks, and so forth. Other than this, there is no special format that you need to use. It sometimes helps the reader to follow what’s being said if an essay is divided into different sections with appropriate headings and sub-headings. This is up to you, though there shouldn’t be too many headings, otherwise your paper will appear too fragmented.

You may use a somewhat informal writing style if you wish. For example, use of the first person is acceptable, as in “My own view is ..” or “I am inclined to think that …” However, be careful not to overwork such phrases, and avoid being too colloquial. It is best to write in a clear, straightforward style. Don’t try to sound too intellectual or academic, especially if you don’t feel comfortable or natural writing in such a style.
Organization

It is probably best to start your essay by stating as clearly as you can what issue you are going to be discussing. You may have to provide some background before you begin to develop your own ideas, and you may also need to clarify the question you are addressing, but you should do this as concisely as you can so that the bulk of the essay consists of your critical discussion of the issue.

Comments about Content

Remember that this is primarily a discussion paper, not a research paper. You may consult library or Internet sources for additional information about your topic, but this is not mainly what we are looking for. In writing your essay your main goal should be to say something interesting about the topic you have selected. To say something interesting about it, you must say something that is original and creative. This is another reason why you must think carefully about your topic before you begin writing, as you must determine whether you have any interesting things to say about it. If you can’t seem to come up with anything, switch to another topic.

Originality

Keep in mind that the purpose of writing a term paper, or writing anything for that matter, is to say something original. Your main goal in your paper must therefore be to say something new, or something that, as far as you are aware, is new and interesting about the issue of the meaning of life. You don’t want to merely repeat what others have written about this issue. Saying some new about an issue that is also plausible, whether in philosophy or any other subject is difficult, but do the best you can.

Give Arguments

Remember also that this is a philosophical paper, not an exercise in rhetoric. It is not enough merely to express your opinion, regardless of how elegantly you do so. I want you to be as forceful and persuasive as you can be, of course, but you must not engage in overstatement or exaggeration. To be persuasive in writing a philosophical paper means supporting your views by carefully reasoned and detailed arguments.

Reflection Assignment Instructions: In a written reflection of at least 200 words, engage with Stephen Wood, “Sports Team Owners.

Reflection Assignment Instructions:

In a written reflection of at least 200 words, engage with Stephen Wood, “Sports Team Owners Are Running Game on Players” (available as a PDF).

Your reflection must employ at least one (1) type of reflection task from three (3) different groups from the list of six groups (A) through (F) below. You are not limited to 3 tasks, but you must do at least 3 different tasks. There is no also minimum length for each individual task, only for the reflection as a whole.

Please use separate paragraphs for each reflection task and label each paragraph with the specific type of reflection task you’re completing within each group, not just the letter for the category. (You won’t get credit if you don’t include this! The purpose of this is to clearly communicate to me what you’re trying to do, and where in your response you’re trying to do it.)

Finally, you should state how long it took you to do the reading itself as well as how long your reflection took. (This is to help you be honest with yourself; you aren’t graded on the amount of time you spent, so there’s no incentive to lie or exaggerate, but you can’t get credit for the assignment if you don’t report this.)

Modes of Engagement:

Group A: Comprehension

Locating the author’s thesis or main idea and putting it in your own words
Be careful not to pick just any old sentence—your task is to zero in on the single most important idea the author is arguing for. The author will sometimes help you find this idea with phrases like ‘I am arguing that…’ or ‘I conclude that…’, but you may have to read between the lines. Once you’ve located the main idea, explain it as clearly as possible in your own words.
Outlining or summarizing the author’s argument in your own words
The most common way that philosophers do this is by setting out a list of formal numbered premises, or supporting claims, clearly explain how each the supporting claims build up to the conclusion.
Note: If the author has already clearly laid out a list of numbered premises, this reading is not a good candidate for outlining the argument, and you won’t get credit for it!
Group B: Queries

Identifying missing background information, doing some research, and then saying what you learned
Note: “Background” information, by definition, is not information contained in the essay itself (though it might be contained in another reading, a dictionary, an encyclopedia, etc.).
Asking a question and then following up on that question
This could be a clarification question about something that you found unclear or in need of further explanation
Once you’ve laid out your question, you should do some reflection(or research) and then make an educated guess as to what you think the most likely interpretation, explanation, etc. would be (even if you aren’t sure)
This could also be a curiosity question about a specific topic that the reading prompted you to want to learn more about
For curiosity questions, you should then do some research and report back what you learned and if your question got answered
Group C: Connections

Making connections between what you’re reading and what you already know
Try to draw clear and direct connections, explaining how this reading relates to another reading, an idea we discussed in class, something you learned in another class, your life experience, a novel, a TV show, etc.—as long as it’s directly relevant to the reading!
Applying concepts or theories to new contexts
Feel free to expand on an author’s idea and apply it to something new, such as coming up with a new thought experiment or analogy that creatively modifies or goes beyond what’s in the reading while showing your understanding of one of the author’s main ideas or concepts
Group D: Criticism

Constructively criticizing the author’s argument
There are two main ways to criticize an argument:
First, you can ask if one or more of the premises false? (In logical terms, Is the argument sound?)
Can you find (or imagine) a counterexample to one of the author’s central claims? This can take the form of either evidence or a thought experiment that shows one of the author’s claims to be false.
Second, you can ask if the premises fail to support the conclusion? (That is, Is the argument valid?) If we assume, for the sake of argument that the premises are all true, does the conclusion follow?
Note: An argument can have false premises and still be valid!
For any criticisms or objections you’ve raised, you should consider how the author might reply:
Could the author modify their view to avoid the objection you’ve raised while still preserving their basic conclusion? Or is the author forced to abandon their conclusion entirely?
Group E: Epiphanies

Describe something that you changed your mind about while reading
Be sure to describe both what it was that changed your mind (e.g., an analogy, a piece of evidence, etc.) and how it changed.
Describe a realization you had while reading the text
What is an idea you encountered that you hadn’t thought of before, but that seemed both surprising and also obvious once you understood it? Be sure to describe both the realization you had and what brought it about.
Group F: Other

Engage with the text in some other creative way not listed above, as long as it is done in a constructive manner that displays engagement with and mastery of the relevant content. Ideas along these lines include:
Creating a meme or or a TikTok or drawing a picture that that illustrates or displays a clear understanding of a key aspect of the argument
Paraphrasing a key passage or main idea in another writing style (e.g., as a tweet or as a sonnet or as parody song lyrics)
Offering your own original argument, with premises and conclusions clearly identified, in a way that directly engages with the reading or the topic being discussed[supanova_question]

Data Analytics – Excel Exercise

Accounting 334 – Data Analytics – Excel Exercise This is a data analytics exercise modified from the one presented in your textbook. We will be using Excel to perform an analysis of two companies: GPS Corporation and Tru, Inc. Please download the Excel spreadsheet “GPS_Tru_Financials.xls” from the Data Analytics Module on Canvas.
Part 1: For each of the two companies in the most recent five-year period 2017-2021 calculate and display (using the chart option) the trends for the: (a) Debt to equity ratio (Total Debt / Total Equity) (b) Rate of return on assets (Net Income / Total Assets) (c) Rate of return on shareholders’ equity (Net Income / Shareholders’ Equity)
Please make sure to label the charts correctly (including chart title, x-axis, and y-axis). These charts will be used to answer the next part and will be submitted as supporting material. Part 2: Based on what you find, answer the following questions: 1. Which of the two companies finances a higher percentage of its assets by borrowed funds relative to funds invested by shareholders as measured by the debt to equity ratio is 2021? 2. Which of the two companies indicates higher profitability during the period 2017-2021 without regard to the sources of financing as measured by the return on assets ratio? 3. Which of the two companies indicates higher effectiveness of employing resources provided by owners during the period 2017-2021 as measured by the return on shareholders’ equity ratio? 4. Management is using its borrowed funds to enhance the earnings for shareholders of (a) GPS Corporation, (b) Tru, Inc., (c) both firms, or (d) neither firm during the period 2017-2021? Background Information • What does the debt to equity (D/E) ratio tell us? The firm’s capital structure refers to the amount of debt and equity the company uses to finance its operations. D/E ratio is oftentimes used as a measure of risk. All else equal, the higher the D/E ratio, the higher the risk. The risk referred to here is “default risk” because it indicates the likelihood the company will default on its obligations (if it borrows excessively). However, debt can also create “favorable financial leverage”. If the company can earn a return on the borrowed funds in excess of the cost of borrowing the funds, then shareholders are provided with a total return greater than what could have been earned with equity funding alone. Examining additional ratios will help determine whether the company has a favorable financial leverage.
•What does the return on assets (ROA) ratio tell us? ROA (net income/assets) is a measure of the
company’s profitability. It measures profitability without regard to the source of the company’s financing (i.e., whether the financing is debt or equity). Remember, Assets = Liabilities Equity, so when we divide by assets we are dividing by debt and equity. You can also think of ROA in terms of how well the company employs its assets. The ratio helps us answer the following question: for every $1 of asset the company employs, how much net income does the company generate? • What does the return on shareholders’ equity (ROE) ratio tell us? ROE (net income/shareholders’ equity) is also a measure of the company’s profitability. However, it does measure profitability with regard to the source of financing – it looks specifically at the shareholders’ equity (rather than debt and equity combined). Doing so, the ROE measures how effective the company is at employing resources provided by the owners’ of the company. The ratio helps us answer the following question: for every $1 of financing provided by shareholders, how much net income does the company generate? • Does the company have favorable financial leverage? For our purposes, we will consider a company to have favorable financial leverage if its ROE is greater than its ROA. Assignment Submission: To receive full credit, please upload the assignment, a report in a Word or PDF with: A. Your answers to the above four questions. B. Supporting data and labeled charts associated with the three ratios (debt to equity, return on equity, and return on assets). You will need to copy your chart from Excel (Microsoft ‘snip and sketch’ is an easy tool you can use to avoid any formatting issues).
Good luck! ????

Legal Memorandum

Assignment Description
For this assignment, you will analyze and evaluate the problem presented. You will then present your answer to the assigned audience to use for their purpose using the provided template and format. This assignment will bring together many things you have learned this semester.
Assignment Deliverable
Deliverable: A 3-page minimum, single-spaced legal memorandum, using the provided Legal Memorandum Template. (***this document is attached bellow named “Legal Memorandum template Unlocked”***)
This assignment will be completed as a modified version of a legal memorandum as documented by CUNY School of Law. (You should not reference their document, as a full legal memorandum is much more complex than what you will be doing.)
Refer to the Exemplar (***this document is attached bellow named “Legal Memorandum Exemplar”***) provided if you have questions about the way the document should be laid out.
Problem
ABC Textiles, Inc. has a textile production facility located in Palm City, FL. It lies along a river that is used for drinking water for the surrounding town and is therefore tested regularly for chemical contaminants according to EPA standards. There is also a recreational beachfront with swimming and boating located ½ mile downstream of the plant. Over the last ten years, the incidence of a skin reaction called allergic dermatitis has increased dramatically for swimmers at the recreational beachfront.
Due to public concern, the local water utility began checking for elevated levels of several pollutants that cause skin reactions. Over the course of a year, they collected 45 water samples from a location adjacent to the output of the industrial plant. These samples were tested and elevated levels of chromium were identified. The EPA’s Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for chromium is 0.1 mg/L. With the knowledge that chromium pollution can result from fabric dyeing within textile factories, a group of concerned citizens has brought a class-action lawsuit against ABC Textiles, Inc. The class claims that the company’s textile mill has contributed to elevated chromium levels in the river, causing skin reactions at the local beach.
Due to the significance of this litigation, the Judge involved with the case, The Honorable Orlana Leia, has brought you in as an expert witness, independent of either side of the litigation, to give your expert opinion on the chromium exceedance. At your request, she is providing you with data from the 45 samples the water utility collected. She has requested that you analyze whether the chromium levels in the river exceed the EPA standard. Because there are no other outputs to the river within 5 miles, it can be presumed that the textile plant is the most likely source of elevated chromium levels, if they are present in the river. The area between the output of the industrial plant and the beachfront is populated with residential housing, and the prosecution and defense have agreed that illegal dumping or another source of contamination in this area is highly unlikely.
She is requiring that you complete your work with a high level of confidence, therefore you have suggested using a significance level of .01 (i.e., 99% confidence). You are to provide the jury with which side of the litigation you would support and why in a written document that makes the determination clear and believable to them. The document you are to provide is to follow the court’s template and their Legal memorandum guide. You will also copy the document to John Coltrane, Clerk of the Courts, Mitchell Bilano, Plaintiffs’ Counsel, and Jill Gailow, Defendant’s Counsel. Remember that you are only an expert on statistical analysis of the exceedance of chromium in the river, not on whether elevated chromium can cause allergic dermatitis. Be careful not to overstate your findings – don’t make any assumptions that aren’t very clearly suggested by the data.

Review and evaluate the problem presented – Using skills from IDL 3, evaluate the problem. What do you know and how is it significant to the problem? Determine the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses for the problem and the correct test to determine whether there is statistical significance. If it helps you can sketch a diagram of the problem.
Complete the calculation – Complete the statistical analysis of the problem. Be sure that you understand all of the processes you have completed to get your answer, you will have to document it. You do not need to present this evaluation in the assignment, however, you will need to know what you figure out from the analysis to complete the work.
Develop your document for the assigned audience and purpose – As you will have templates for many professional documents you will create, this assignment has a format that you must follow – the Legal Memorandum Template. This format includes appearance and content. See the Exemplar for a visual guide.
Memorandum Header – This section of the document provides the necessary information so a reader can determine if the document is relevant to him/her. It must be consistent in layout and format so that it is easy to read. This section is graded on your ability to follow directions.
TO – The person you have been asked to address the memorandum to. Follow the exemplar, on paper a judge’s title is ‘Honorable’.
Why? This section and the CC section may be addressed to one or more person(s). The amount of information included for each is dependent on an organization’s level of formality and the role of hierarchy in the organization. National culture may also play a role in these decisions, as some may place greater importance on titles (such as Mr., Dr., or General). The person’s role title is often included, as it will dictate what type of information they need from you. Finally, the location of the addressee can be included, when it also suggests the type of information the document will include. When in doubt, it is better to be more formal and include too much information than to find out it was needed but not included.
CC – Emulate the format of the Exemplar. Edit Download Exemplar. The name of each person being addressed is on a new equally indented line.
FROM – Emulate the format of the xemplar. Use your name, your title is Engineering Expert Witness
DATE – Use the due date of the assignment formate as Month, day, year
RE – For a lawsuit, this will have the suit name and then what it is about relative to the lawsuit.
Question Presented – Present specifically, and concisely the question you are being asked to address. This question must include a technical and legal component.
Brief Answer – Present specifically, and concisely the answer you got from your analysis. This answer must include a technical and legal component. The answer will not have details on your analysis or numeric outcomes.
Facts – This section will present the input you were given by presenting the context, the data and its meaning in the context, and how this input allows you to structure an analysis to determine an answer. It will not proceed into the analysis.
Discussion – This section presents the logic on how you analyzed the problem in language a non-technical audience can understand, starting with the most basic reasoning for the use of this analysis for the problem. This section will end with what you found through your analysis and what it means for the case.
Conclusion – This summarizes the entire document ending with the outcome of your analysis and its meaning to the case.
Appendix – This section is on its own page (use ‘insert/page break). For this section type out the mathematics, you used to calculate an answer in detail, ending with the outcome, what it means for the hypothesis test and the case.

Writing Question

The Chi Omega sorority chapter of Penn State University was being investigated after a photograph surfaced of a party laden with Mexican stereotypes in the fall of 2012 (Murray, 2012). The members were dressed in ponchos and sombreros and wore fake mustaches. One displayed a sign saying, “Will mow lawn for weed and beer,” while another showed a sign that said, “I don’t cut grass. I smoke it.” The president of the sorority issued an apology, while the university public relations director said that the university was appalled that this level of insensitivity would be displayed. The sorority’s communications director also responded that the behavior was a degradation of a group of people.
This incident brings to light concerns in relation to social class and diversity. The outfits were obviously stereotypical of the Mexican culture, when in truth, the vast majority of people in Mexico do not wear ponchos or sombreros. Apparently, the point was to classify people of Mexican descent or Mexican origin and convey the assumption that they are yard workers, smoke grass, drink beer, and sport mustaches.
This misconception raises a concern that people of Mexican descent are being depicted in the lowest socioeconomic class, which serves as a denigration of their culture and reinforces the stereotypes of Mexican culture.
In general, U.S. society has tended to treat people in lower socioeconomic classes in a derogatory manner, regardless of their skin color. The perception that the lower class are less worthy even subjects this group to lower pay, which further perpetuates their economic status. The sorority’s depiction of the Mexican culture is a microcosm of what many in society have come to perceive, given the socialization by the media and others about class positions.

School murders and its causes
Introduction
In the last few years, there have been a lot of criminal happenings in the world. Among the scary criminal activities that are reported quite often are murdered in school. School murders, particularly school shootings, have a long history (Chen et al., n.p). Despite the efforts made by the government to curb the issue, school murders have continued to increase, with several attacks taking place every year. The main risk factors that result in school murders are the absence of security, killing games, domestic violence, and inadequate mental healthcare workers in healthcare organizations.
School murders and violence are a critical national issue as it leads to many deaths and injuries. It is a complex issue that requires multifaceted evidence-based solutions. It is a problem that requires special attention from the government and the public, and other authorities. Identifying and understanding the root causes of school murders is essential in implementing solutions that will help resolve the issue (Chen et al., n.p). The paper explores murders in school that occurs because of the absence of security, consumption, and participation in killing video games, domestic violence, and inadequate mental health staff workers in schools.
Body paragraphs
Murders in schools have increased due to the absence of security. Even though schools are working towards meeting the educational needs of the students, their systems are open to security threats. The security threats may come from the outside or inside the school. However, most of the reported cases of school murders were caused by students of the same institution. According to Chen et al. (n.p), the lack of adequate funds to enforce security in schools is one of the main reasons for the absence of security, leading to increased school murders. The funds obtained from the government are inadequate to hire enough security staff members. Additionally, the hired staff members need the appropriate equipment to enhance security in schools. The government should determine the amount that is needed to hire adequate security staff and purchase security tools. This should be based on the number of students and staff members of the institution. It should then allocate adequate financial resources to the institution to enhance security and minimize the cases of murder. Failure to adopt and install new technology that promotes security also leads to increased murders in schools. According to Kumar (n.p), technology can help promote physical safety among students in schools through various ways. However, many schools in the U.S are yet to embrace new technology to help curb the issue of violence and school murders. Failure to install new technology to promote safety in schools is caused mainly by inadequate funding making the schools unable to afford the technological equipment. It is easier to detect danger using digital equipment than merely relying on security officers placed in schools. Embracing technology will help to allow two-way communication between teachers and emergency responders, enhance social media monitoring and promote safety policies and training for the school staff members (Chen et al., n.p).
Watching and participating in killing video games is another contributing factor to increased murder cases in schools. Watching killing video games promotes aggressive behavior among students, and that is a contributing factor to school murders. Violent video games provide an opportunity and a platform for the students to learn and practice violent behavior (Markey et al., n.p). Studies indicate that excessive watching of killing video games and playing increases an individual’s aggressive feelings and thoughts, resulting in aggressive behavior. Students who frequently watch aggressive video games are likely to be hostile when other students confront them or when in conflict. Parents should play an active role in ensuring that their children do not engage in killing or aggressive video games. The public should rise against video games that are considered to be too violent. The government should also enact laws that control and regulate the video game industry to prevent the production of video games that can have adverse effects on society. Watching video games result in poor mental health and social interactions, contributing to aggressive behavior among students increasing the risk of school murders (Markey et al., n.p). Some of the students play video games to distract themselves from the psychological trauma and pain. Failure to address psychological trauma and pain only makes the situation worse. Students under such circumstancess are likely to participate in adverse events such as mass shootings. Studies have linked video games with mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Instead of participating in harmful video games, students should be encouraged to participate in other activities that promote physical and mental health, such as physical exercises and sports (Markey et al., n.p).
Domestic violence is among the contributing factors of violence and murder cases in schools. Domestic violence has adverse effects on the mental and emotional health of students. Children who witness domestic violence at home are at high risk of developing mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety (Gold, p.36). Such children are likely to react violently when bullied at school or when they face opposition. Students who witness domestic violence at home find it difficult to establish effective relationships with other students. They are likely to act violently when they feel that they have been rejected. Such students may have low empathy levels, and they may fail to care for others. Domestic violence promotes aggressive behavior among children.Students who witness domestic violence are likely to be more aggressive in their relationships with others than children who do not witness domestic violence at home (Geller et al., p.4). Domestic violence may cause students to indulge in drug abuse to deal with psychological trauma and pain caused by domestic violence. Substance abuse is a factor that increases the risk of students engaging in violent behavior. It also promotes criminal behavior among the students. Parents should be aware of how their children can be affected by domestic violence. They should be encouraged to promote a safe environment at home for their children to thrive in mental and physical health. Parents can choose to argue in an environment where their children cannot see them, which will help prevent emotional disturbance among children (Geller et al., p.4).
Inadequate mental health staff in schools has led to increased murder cases. Mental health professionals are essential in schools because they support students who go through life challenges such as homelessness, domestic violence, mental health disorders, community violence, and poverty. Most schools only have one or two staff members to cater to the mental health needs of every student. Some schools even lack mental health professionals. Among the significant causes of mass shootings in schools are mental health disorders (Majeed et al., n.p). Before addressing the issue of guns, the government should first address the issue of mental health needs among students. If guns and other weapons are controlled without addressing the mental health needs of students, violence will still be perpetuated in one way or the other (Majeed et al., n.p). Schools have inadequate mental health workers mainly because of insufficient financial resources to hire mental health professionals. Lack of policies that require schools to have a minimum number of mental health professionals based on the schools’ population contributes to students’ unmet mental health needs. The local governments should ensure that every school has a minimum number of mental healthcare workers. The mental health professionals should be qualified and competent to meet the different needs of the students. Having adequate mental healthcare staff members will encourage the students to seek help when they encounter psychological trauma and pain. Instead of indulging in drugs and substance abuse, most will opt for counseling if easily accessible. Students should be informed that failure to access mental healthcare services can lead to violent behavior and murder (Majeed et al., n.p).
Conclusion
Based on the above discussion, school murders are mainly caused by the absence of security in school, overconsumption of video killing games, domestic violence, and inadequate mental health staff members in schools. The government should allocate adequate funds for schools to install technological tools that can help to improve security.Killing video games encourage aggressive behavior among the students, which is a risk factor for school murders. Most students who were reported to perpetuate school murders had mental health disorders. Therefore, addressing the mental health needs of students is a critical strategy to minimize aggressive behavior and school murders. Curbing the issue of school murders requires the participation of the government, schools, parents, and the children.

“Turning Down a Job Offer: As a new college graduate, you’re delighted that not one but two companies have offered you a position in their _______ (you decide which) department. You met representatives of both companies at your university’s job fair. From this first contact came an invitation for an onsite job interview with each company. You really enjoyed learning more about the operations of both companies and meeting their friendly employees. Both companies have great employee benefits, and the salaries they’re offering are comparable.
After careful thought, you’ve decided to go with Company B. You sense a little better match between their values and yours, and you think the opportunity for advancement might be better there as well. Write the recruiter at Company A to reject its offer. Of course you will convey your appreciation for the company’s consideration, and the things you learned on your visit will enable you to give some well-deserved compliments. What will be stickiest is figuring out how to explain why you’re choosing another offer. The explanation won’t need to be long, but the company does deserve one. You certainly don’t want to close the door on future employment or business relations with this company, so the time you spend crafting this message will be time well spent. (If your instructor directs, research two companies to use for this assignment.)”
