Chapter: III Research Methodology


A step-by-step approach has been followed to meet the aims and the objectives outlined in this research. This methodology will reflect within the research design, research philosophy, and data sampling.

This study utilised qualitative data collection, a non-statistical technique of understanding the research topic which allows for better interpretation and in-depth understanding of the research (Oun & Bach, 2014). It does not involve any quantitative interpretation and is subjected to the content and the descriptive analysis of the gathered data. Qualitative research analysis will also assist in examining the research topic on the impact of cosmetic surgery advertising via social media on African American women. First-hand data collection was undertaken based upon the sampling strategy and the target population of the study. According to Benoot et al. (2016), the characteristics of qualitative research are considered practical in relation to design as it involves using the data from multiple sources and aids in inductive analysis. The qualitative approach has a relatively strong position in the research study as it will aid in the depiction and in-depth understanding of participants’ experiences, related phenomena, and overall context in relation to the research topic (Harper, 2011). With the utilisation of the qualitative approach, social issues which arise in this study can be analysed, and provides the opportunity to address participants’ experiences by initiating various questions. Overall, qualitative research will be used as an explanatory model (Campbell, 2014). It will assist in enabling the sense of social reality and depicting various social aspects (Jamshed, 2014).

The type of qualitative data collection used in the current research will be structured interviews. An interview will be designed to meet the aim and objectives of the research, and this interview will include various questions that are formulated to gain the research results (Khan, 2014). This interview will uphold various ethical considerations in order to improve the validity of the research. Each participant was also provided with informed consent prior to partaking in the research study. The rationale of choosing informed consent is that it will help maintain the confidentiality and anonymity of the research.

Research philosophy:

An interpretivist approach to research was adopted within this study. Potrac et al. (2014) defines interpretivism as the strategy required to gain knowledge and better interpret and highlight a research study’s subjective meanings. According to Bevir and Rhodes (2012), selecting this approach assists in the interpretation of different aspects of research. Utilising a subjective approach is essential for this study as it explains the subjective element of the research. The subjective element of this research will further aid in the fulfilment of the research aim and objectives (Ryan, 2018). The research study aim is to analyse the impact of social media advertising on the target population of focus. The research objectives will be achieved by highlighting the experiences and the behaviours of the individuals who took part in the research study. Chowdhury (2014) states that the interpretivist approach helps to uncover the hidden factors within a study and to further discover the underlying reasons for specific behaviour. The current research study analyses both the self-experience (i.e. self-perception in relation to body image) and the purchase intent amongst a select sample of African American millennial women within the US. The interpretivist approach will help in uncovering the impact of social media advertising on the research target population in a subjective way.

Data sampling method:

The data sampling method finds its importance in managing the samples and addressing the population involved in the research. The research will follow a purposeful sampling method. Purposeful sampling is not limited to a single strategy, but rather, utilises four different strategies (Emmel, 2013). The most befitting strategy for this research study is the homogeneity strategy. This strategy is used in qualitative research, as it allows for detailed description of a particular sub-group to reduce variations, simplify the analysis, and facilitate the findings (Suri, 2011). The sampling strategy also associates with the aims and the objectives of the research, a necessary requirement of the selected homogeneity strategy (Qu & Dumay, 2011).

Inclusion criteria:

After selecting the sampling strategy, the next step in the research methodology is to select the samples to be utilised within the research. The following is the selection criteria developed to meet the objectives of this research:

The participants must be African American millennial women aged 24-35 years of age residing in the United States

The literature review and the associated gaps have uncovered that the effects of social media advertising on African American women is an under-developed area of research, despite the encounters that this particular demographic has had in relation to the cosmetic surgery industry and its associated advertising via social media channels. 92.9% of US cosmetic surgery patients in 2018 were female, and 98% of 21-35 yr olds in the US plan to have cosmetic surgery (ASAPS, 2018), making millennial females the most engaged demographic within the US in relation to seeking cosmetic surgery procedures. These findings further propelled this study to focus on and explore the selected sample.

The participants must be users of the Instagram social media application

Alghonaim et al. (2019) suggests that Instagram is the most influential platform in cosmetic surgery desire in young women, making it a relevant social platform to focus the research study upon. A report published by Statista (2019) reveals that over half of all instagram users (approximately fifty-eight percent) are millennials, and amongst this demographic over half are female. This further justifies the selected sample criteria of both point A and point B.

The research participants must have had any form of cosmetic surgery within the last five years

It was imperative that participants involved in the study had a prior history of cosmetic surgery in order to ascertain how the advertising via social media aided in their thought process and eventual purchase intent in relation to undergoing cosmetic surgery. This criteria allowed for rich data to be collected in order to further meet the research aim and objectives.

Research Procedure:

First of all, the research study will set the aims and objectives of the research to find out a dimension of the research, as it will help better understand the research topic. After deciding the samples and the targeted population, the next step is to use different strategies for reaching the population. Before interviewing the participants, they are provided with the consent form to deal with their confidentiality and anonymity issues. Debriefing will also be provided to the participants to let them know about the research study. After taking their consent, the next step will be interviewing those participants (Ratislavová & Ratislav, 2014). The participants will ask the interview questions to get a more in-depth understanding and deeper analysis of the research topic. The interview participants will be asked questions one by one after getting to know about their demographics. After taking interviews from the focus group of the target example, the next step will be to analyze the data gathered. The data analysis in the qualitative research study involves identifying the themes, experiences, and opinions in between the participants’ responses. This will be done by using qualitative software as that of NVIVO. This software will help in identifying the common themes for reporting the results. After obtaining the results, these findings will be compared with empirical research to see the current research’s validity and consistency.

Ethical considerations:

The current research will be ethically considerate, and it will consider all the ethical measures to improve the validity and consistency of the research. The ethical considerations that will be considered in the current research include confidentiality, anonymity, informed consent, integrity, and honesty in the research (Connelly, 2014). All the principles are followed in the current research, and the participants are also provided with informed consent to deal with their ethical concerns. Voluntary participation of the participants is vital to provide respect to the rights of each participant, as per Recker (2012). Also, the participants will be made aware of the detailed description of the data collection and analysis. The identity and the confidential information of the participants will be kept anonymous in the entire study. And the data of the study will be kept confidential and saved in a computer system that is encrypted by using a password to get access. All the findings of the research will be widely reported, and the authors will be honestly acknowledged.


Although the research study is reliable and valid, it still has certain limitations that cannot be ignored. One of the research limitations is that it is subjective, which means that the researcher’s personal experiences and viewpoints can influence the research findings. The findings of the research cannot be generalized because of the limited sample. Moreover, COVID-19 has caused a significant number of challenges to conduct the research. The data collection cannot be possible face to face due to COVID-19 restrictions, but in the current case, zoom meetings will be held to achieve the aims of the research. The current research is qualitative rather than quantitative research, which is another limitation of the research. These limitations can be addressed in the future for the improvement of the current research study.

To summarize, the research methodology followed in the research is qualitative, and it will follow the interpretivism approach. The primary data collection will be held by the participants directly by taking their interviews via online platforms. A step-by-step approach will be used in the research to meet the aims and objectives of the research. The research will be ethically considerate, and all the ethical principles will be kept in mind. However, the study has limitations due to the lack of generality and restrictions to do face-to-face interviews.

Research philosophy

The initial element of the research methodology for this dissertation is to define the underlying research philosophy for the investigation. In the case of the present dissertation, this methodology must provide the potential to examine the role of digital marketing in supporting business recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. As this is a broad and exploratory research process, the optimal research philosophy will be interpretive in nature (Ghauri and Grønhaug, 2005). This is due to the value of an interpretive philosophy in focusing on the contextual nature of the research situation and the various social factors around it. As such, an interpretive research aims to create knowledge and insight by interpreting the present research scenario within its social context (Easterby-Smith et al, 2012). This interpretive focus will help to facilitate understanding around the role of digital marketing in supporting business recovery as economies begin to emerge from the worst effects of the pandemic. Such a philosophy contrasts with others such as positivism, which aim to describe situations through detailed mathematical processes involving scientific analysis and rational inquiry (Saunders et al, 2009). As such, the present research will look to be more interpretive and open to the nature of digital marketing and its role in the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery, in order to provide high levels of insight and to support the development of a framework to support digital marketing in the future (Gray, 2014).

Research methods

Within the overall research philosophy, it is important for a researcher to consider the specific choice of research methods. In particular, research needs to consider the use of either primary or secondary methods, and whether these methods will be guided by the use of qualitative or quantitative data. This broadly requires a consideration of the ability of each research method to provide data that is both reliable and valid, and also suitable for the purpose of analysis and fulfilment of the objectives of the work (Denscombe, 2010). In the case of the present research, as the study is interpretive in nature, it is most strongly aligned with primary and qualitative research methods, as these can provide the highest level of interpretive insight around the nature of the topic and the role of digital marketing in supporting business recovery as economies begin to emerge from the worst effects of the pandemic. This in turn indicates that the present research is best advised to use a primary and qualitative method. In this regard, an interview strategy has been selected as the main method of empirical research for this dissertation. This is due to the value of interview strategies in providing strong levels of insight into a specific research phenomenon, whilst also enabling the use of a broad sample rather than a focus on a specific organisation (Dilanthi, 2002). This hence lends itself to the use of interviews in the collection of qualitative primary data, which can be used to develop sufficient insight around the research topic and its implications for theory and practice (Patton, 2002).

Sampling strategy

In order to ensure the data is reliable and valid, it is important to apply a valid sampling strategy. In this regard, the purpose of this research project would be to examine the role of digital marketing in supporting business recovery as economies begin to emerge from the worst effects of the pandemic. This requires a sampling strategy which can provide sufficient insight into the role played by digital marketing in this context, whilst also ensuring a degree of breath and representativeness of the wider population (Bryman and Bell, 2015). In the case of the present research, the decision has been made to focus on developing maximum insight, in order to build the framework for future digital marketing interventions. As such, the sampling strategy will be purposive in nature, with a total of ten interviews carried out with the leaders and marketing managers of businesses that have been observed to use digital marketing effectively in responding to the pandemic. This will help to provide insight into the most effective ways digital marketing can be used to support business recovery, with the choice of ten interviews also providing some level of breadth and representativeness (Kumar, 2014).

Data collection

Within the interview strategy, it will be important to consider how the interviews will be conducted, in order to ensure the effective collection of data in a meaningful and valid manner. As noted above, a total of ten interviews will be carried out with individuals selected from organisations that have used digital marketing to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. These interviews will be semi-structured in nature, enabling the researcher to ensure a strong underlying structure to the interviews, but also offering the potential to probe some issues in further depth, and thus develop additional insights where required (Qu and Dumay, 2011). The interviews will be carried out on a face to face basis, with the researcher travelling to the workplaces of the interviewees, or an agreed third party location, in order to maximise convenience for the respondents. Face to face interviews have been shown to be a strong way to collect interview data, enabling a better rapport and deeper answers and insights (Jankowicz, 2005). As such, this process will be used to collect the data, whilst ensuring social distancing is observed and all necessary precautions are taken in light of the risk of COVID-19. The questionnaire instrument is contained in the appendices to this work.

Data analysis

The use of interviews to collect primary data for the research requires said data to be analysed using appropriate and valid qualitative analysis techniques. As such, the decision has been made to undertake qualitative analysis of the interview data by using the process of narrative and thematic analysis (Creswell, 2013). Of these, the thematic analysis involves assigning codes to the data based on the main themes and identified issues. These codes are then compared across different responses and interviews, in order to identify the most significant and important roles of digital marketing in supporting business recovery as economies begin to emerge from the worst effects of the pandemic amongst the sample businesses (Cassel and Symon, 2004). Following these process, the codes are structured in order to craft a narrative outlining the overall role of digital marketing in supporting business recovery, and how this has aided some companies in surviving and thriving in this context (Easterby-Smith et al, 2012). The final stage of analysis is to discuss the results critically within the wider context of the academic literature, identifying and discussing relevant consistencies and inconsistencies in order to develop a deeper level of insight and answer the overall research questions (Quinlan, 2011).

Research ethics

In order to ensure ethical research, the research process has been sure to follow relevant ethical guidelines. Specifically, all relevant guidelines and requirements imposed by the university have been followed closely, whilst the researcher has also adhered to best practice guidelines around ethical academic research in general (Bell, 2014). In the present context, due to the collection of primary data, the work involves individuals and organisations as direct participants in the research process, creating the ethical requirement not to cause any harm, including physical and psychological harm, to any participant or other body affected by the research (Robson, 2011). This has been achieved by obtaining informed consent from all individuals and organisations involved in the research, through the use of consent forms. The researcher has also ensured that the privacy and confidentiality of all participants is maintained, and that no vulnerable people were included in the research process (Bryman and Bell, 2015). In addition to this, all relevant COVID-19 protocols have been followed, including ensuring vaccinations and social distancing, to minimise the risk of physical harm. Finally, the researcher has also carefully followed ethical guidelines around the research reporting and process, including making necessary acknowledgements and references and reporting results in an open and transparent manner, which acknowledges the limitations of the work (William et al, 2013).

Methodological limitations.

The main limitation of the present research is that it is a mono method study. This means that the work has only used one source of data, namely the qualitative interviews. As such, this may limit the insight and validity provided by the results, with Creswell (2013) noting that superior quality research often uses multiple sources of data to offer maximum value and develop superior understanding. In addition to this, the present research takes place in the context of recovery from COVID-19, but only in the early stages, with the potential for future lockdowns and restrictions if cases rise again. As such, this limits the ability of the work to explore fully the role of digital marketing in supporting business recovery as economies begin to emerge from the worst effects of the pandemic. This indicates that future research in this area should consider a longitudinal strategy, analysing businesses and recovery over a long period of time to assess the evolution of digital marketing and its impacts.

Welcome to French class, where you must learn to juggle irregular verbs, flying chalk, and the constant threat of bodily harm

AT THE AGE OF FORTY-ONE, I am returning to school and having to think of myself as. what my French textbook calls “a true debutant.” After paying my tuition, I was issued a student ID, which allows me a discounted entry fee at movie theaters, puppet shows, and Festyland, a far-flung amusement park that advertises with billboards picturing a cartoon stegosaurus sitting in a canoe and eating what appears to be a ham sandwich.

I’ve moved to Paris in order to learn the language. My school is the Alliance Francaise, and on the first day of class, I arrived early, watching as the returning students greeted one another in the school lobby. Vacations were recounted, and questions were raised concerning mutual friends with names like Kang and Vlatnya. Regardless of their nationalities, everyone spoke what sounded to me like excellent French. Some accents were better than others, but the students exhibited an ease and confidence I found intimidating. As an added discomfort, they were all young, attractive, and well dressed, causing me to feel not unlike Pa Kettle trapped backstage after a fashion show.

I remind myself that I am now a full-grown man. No one will ever again card me for a drink or demand that I weave a floor mat out of newspapers. At my age, a reasonable person should have completed his sentence in the prison of the nervous and the insecure–isn’t that the great promise of adulthood? I can’t help but think that, somewhere along the way, I made a wrong turn. My fears have not vanished. Rather, they have seasoned and multiplied with age. I am now twice as frightened as I was when, at the age of twenty, I allowed a failed nursing student to inject me with a horse tranquilizer, and eight times more anxious than I was the day my kindergarten teacher pried my fingers off my mother’s ankle and led me screaming toward my desk. “You’ll get used to it,” the woman had said.

I’m still waiting.

THE FIRST DAY OF class was nerve-racking, because I knew I’d be expected to perform. That’s the way they do it here–everyone into the language pool, sink or swim. The teacher marched in, deeply tanned from a recent vacation, and rattled off a series of administrative announcements. I’ve spent some time in Normandy, and I took a monthlong French class last summer in New York. I’m not completely in the dark, yet I understood only half of what this teacher was saying.

“If you have not meismslsxp by this time, you should not be in this room. Has everybody apzkiubjxow? Everyone? Good, we shall proceed.” She spread out her lesson plan and sighed, saying, “All right, then, who knows the alphabet?”

It was startling, because a) I hadn’t been asked that question in a while, and b) I realized, while laughing, that I myself did not know the alphabet. They’re the same letters, but they’re pronounced differently.

“Ahh.” The teacher went to the board and sketched the letter a. “Do we have anyone in the room whose first name commences with an ahh?”

Two Polish Annas raised their hands, and the teacher instructed them to present themselves, giving their names, nationalities, occupations, and a list of things they liked and disliked in this world. The first Anna hailed from an industrial town outside of Warsaw and had front teeth the size of tombstones. She worked as a seamstress, enjoyed quiet times with friends, and hated the mosquito.

“Oh, really,” the teacher said. “How very interesting. I thought that everyone loved the mosquito, but here, in front of all the world, you claim to detest him. How is it that we’ve been blessed with someone as unique and original as you? Tell us, please.”

The seamstress did not understand what was being said, but she knew that this was an occasion for shame. Her rabbity mouth huffed for breath, and she stared down at her lap as though the appropriate comeback were stitched somewhere alongside the zipper of her slacks.

The second Anna learned from the first and claimed to love sunshine and detest lies. It sounded like a translation of one of those Playmate of the Month data sheets, the answers always written in the same loopy handwriting: “Turn-ons: Mom’s famous five-alarm chili! Turnoffs: Insincerity and guys who come on too strong!!!”

The two Polish women surely had clear notions of what they liked and disliked, but, like the rest of us, they were limited in terms of vocabulary, and this made them appear less than sophisticated. The teacher forged on, and we learned that Carlos, the Argentine bandonion player, loved wine, music, and, in his words, “Making sex with the women of the world.” Next came a beautiful young Yugoslavian who identified herself as an optimist, saying that she loved everything life had to offer.

The teacher licked her lips, revealing a hint of the sadist we would later come to know. She crouched low for her attack, placed her hands on the young woman’s desk, and said, “Oh, yeah? And do you love your little war?”

While the optimist struggled to defend herself, I scrambled to think of an answer to what had obviously become a trick question. How often are you asked what you love in this world? More important, how often are you asked and then publicly ridiculed for your answer? I recalled my mother, flushed with wine, pounding the table late one night, saying, “Love? I love a good steak cooked rare. I love my cat, and I love…” My sisters and I leaned forward, waiting to hear our names. “Tums,” our mother said. “I love Tums.” The teacher killed some time accusing the Yugoslavian girl of masterminding a program of genocide, and I jotted frantic notes in the margins of my pad. While I can honestly say that I love leafing through medical textbooks devoted to severe dermatological conditions, it is beyond the reach of my French vocabulary, and acting it out would only have invited unwanted attention.

When called upon, I delivered an effortless list of things I detest: blood sausage, intestinal pate, brain pudding. I’d learned these words the hard way. Having given it some thought, I then declared my love for IBM typewriters, the French word for “bruise,” and my electric floor waxer. It was a short list, but still I managed to mispronounce IBM and afford the wrong gender to both the floor waxer and the typewriter. Her reaction led me to believe that these mistakes were capital crimes in the country of France.

“Were you always this palicmkrexjs?” she asked. “Even a fiuscrzsws tociwegixp knows that a typewriter is feminine.”

I absorbed as much of her abuse as I could understand, thinking, but not saying, that I find it ridiculous to assign a gender to an inanimate object incapable of disrobing and making an occasional fool of itself. Why refer to Lady Flesh Wound or Good Sir Dishrag when these things could never deliver in the sack?

The teacher proceeded to belittle everyone from German Eva, who hated laziness, to Japanese Yukari, who loved paintbrushes and soap. Italian, Thai, Dutch, Korean, Chinese–we all left class foolishly believing that the worst was over. We didn’t know it then, but the coming months would teach us what it is like to spend time in the presence of a wild animal. We soon learned to dodge chalk and to cover our heads and stomachs whenever she approached us with a question. She hadn’t yet punched anyone, but it seemed wise to prepare ourselves against the inevitable.

THOUGH WE WERE forbidden to speak anything but French, the teacher would occasionally use us to practice any of her five fluent languages.

“I hate you,” she said to me one afternoon. Her English was flawless. “I really, really hate you.” Call me sensitive, but I couldn’t help taking it personally.

Learning French is a lot like joining a gang in that it involves a long and intensive period of hazing. And it wasn’t just my teacher; the entire population seemed to be in on it. Following brutal encounters with my local butcher and the concierge of my building, I’d head off to class, where the teacher would hold my corrected paperwork high above her head, shouting, “Here’s proof that David is an ignorant and uninspired ensigiejsokhjx.”

Refusing to stand convicted on the teacher’s charges of laziness, I’d spend four hours a night on my homework, working even longer whenever we were assigned an essay. I suppose I could have gotten by with less, but I was determined to create some sort of an identity for myself. We’d have one of those “complete the sentence” exercises, and I’d fool with the thing for hours, invariably settling on something like, “A quick run around the lake? I’d love to. Just give me a minute to strap on my wooden leg.” The teacher, through word and action, conveyed the message that, if this was my idea of an identity, she wanted nothing to do with it.

My fear and discomfort crept beyond the borders of my classroom and accompanied me out onto the wide boulevards, where, no matter how hard I tried, there was no escaping the feeling of terror I felt whenever anyone asked me a question. I was safe in any kind of a store, as, at least in my neighborhood, one can stand beside the cash register for hours on end without being asked something so trivial as, “May I help you?” or “How would you like to pay for that?”

My only comfort was the knowledge that I was not alone. Huddled in the smoky hallways and making the most of our pathetic French, my fellow students and I engaged in the sort of conversation commonly overheard in refugee camps.

“Sometimes me cry alone at night.”

“That is common for me also, but be more strong, you. Much work, and someday you talk pretty. People stop hate you soon. Maybe tomorrow, okay?”

Unlike other classes I have taken, here there was no sense of competition. When the teacher poked a shy Korean woman in the eyelid with a freshly sharpened pencil, we took no comfort in the fact that, unlike Hyeyoon Cho, we all knew the irregular past tense of the verb “to de feat.” In all fairness, the teacher hadn’t meant to hurt the woman, but neither did she spend much time apologizing, saying only, “Well, you should have been paying more attention.”

Over time, it became impossible to believe that any of us would ever improve. Fall arrived, and it rained every day. It was mid-October when the teacher singled me out, saying, “Every day spent with you is like having a cesarean section.” And it struck me that, for the first time since arriving in France, I could understand every word that someone was saying.

Understanding doesn’t mean that you can suddenly speak the language. Far from it. It’s a small step, nothing more, yet its rewards are intoxicating and deceptive. The teacher continued her diatribe, and I settled back, bathing in the subtle beauty of each new curse and insult.

“You exhaust me with your foolishness and reward my efforts with nothing but pain, do you understand me?”

The world opened up, and it was with great joy that I responded, “I know the thing what you speak exact now. Talk me more, plus, please, plus.”

The MEAL plan* of paragraph development and organization is a popular acronym at Walden. Whenever I ask students if they’ve heard of it, at least half already have and the other half immediately start taking notes as I explain it. The reason it’s popular is clear. It’s easy to remember and helps to demystify a topic that can seem quite murky: paragraphs.

However, to use the MEAL plan effectively to develop and revise paragraphs, it needs a little bit of explanation. In this first of a series of blog posts about the MEAL plan, I’m going to tackle the first letter: M, standing for “main idea.”

The main idea of a paragraph is often called a topic sentence. 

There are a few requirements of a topic sentence that you should always check off:

? You should always have one! Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence—that’s right, each and every paragraph. This type of sentence is that important.

? The topic sentence needs to introduce the main idea you’ll be exploring or explaining in the rest of the paragraph. It’s sort of like the thesis statement of the paragraph in this way: it helps tell the reader what topic all the sentences in the paragraph will have in common.

? It probably shouldn’t have a citation. While this isn’t a hard and fast rule, it’s a good guideline. A topic sentence may include research (with a citation), but it usually doesn’t because it should be an overall statement of the paragraph’s focus (rather than a specific idea or fact that needs a citation).

Here’s a sample paragraph with a topic sentence: 

          Many infant and mother deaths can be prevented, especially in the third world. Worldwide, around 11,000,000 children under 5 years old die primarily from preventable diseases, and over 500,000 mothers die from pregnancy- or delivery-related complications annually; almost 99% of these occur in developing countries (Hill et al., 2007). This high number is devastating because while infants in these countries have a high risk of dying, their risk does not stop once they are adults. For women, the lifetime risk of dying from pregnancy and childbirth-related causes is about 100 times higher in Bangladesh than in developed countries (WHO, 2004). The continued failures in implementing straightforward interventions targeting the root causes of mortalities have been responsible for these deaths (McCoy, 2006). The medical community has not been able to come up with simple, cost-effective, and life-saving methods that would help save lives in developing countries. This lack of innovation in the medical field has resulted in the continued unnecessary deaths of thousands of mothers and children.

In analyzing this paragraph, we can check off all of our requirements for a topic sentence:

? First, it exists! I know this sounds simple, but students often forget to include topic sentences in their hurry to include evidence from sources.

? Second, it tells us what this paragraph’s focus will be about. After reading the rest of the paragraph, we can see that all the other sentences reflect this focus—they develop and support this idea that (a) infants and mothers are dying, (b) these deaths are preventable, and (c) this is happening in the third world.

? Third, the statement is general enough that it doesn’t need a citation. Instead, it’s an overall statement that summarizes the focus of the entire paragraph, not just one idea or fact that would need a citation.

? Lastly, take another look at the paragraph and imagine if that topic sentence wasn’t there. While each sentence on its own would make sense, we wouldn’t know the main point or idea of the paragraph until the very last sentence. Waiting until the end of the paragraph to understand the paragraph’s main idea impedes the reader’s ability to understand how these sentences fit together. 

I hope you’re getting a sense of what a topic sentence looks like and why it is important. However, most writers don’t naturally include topic sentences in their paragraphs, and that’s okay! What’s important is that you are able to revise for topic sentences. To do so, I always suggest that students review each paragraph of a first draft: look for paragraphs that don’t have a topic sentence that fulfills the requirements I outlined above, and add or adjust as needed.

You are providing nutritional counseling to a family of four.  A 35-year-old man who is sedentary and weighs 230 pounds and is 77 inches tall, a 30 woman who is very active and weighs 150 pounds and is 69 inches tall, a 10-year old girl weighing 61 pounds, and an 18 month old boy who weighs 16 pounds.  

You will need to assess the nutritional needs for each individual, including the children.  How many calories must they consume daily? (Use the inside of your textbook cover for EER – Estimated Energy Requirements as well as Appendix F. Remember to subtract calories for any age over 30, see the small print at the bottom of appendix F 4-6 of your textbook). Of the calories they must consume, break down using the daily recommended intake percentages and include how many calories should come from carbohydrates, fat, and protein.   

Next, create a meal plan for the family that meets everyone’s nutritional needs.  Include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  You can create a chart; you can just write it down in a document.  Feel free to be creative. Utilize your textbook for recommendations for toddlers and children. You should be sure to follow USDA guidelines and ensure recommendations for all food groups are met.  Follow the MyPlate guidelines which you can find on the Food Tracker website. You must also show that all the nutrient requirements are met show the caloric, carbohydrate, protein, and fat content intake with each meal for each individual. 

Lastly, imagine that this family was very low-income and had to feed the entire family on $10/day.  What changes would you make to the menu?  How could you make it more cost-effective without sacrificing nutritional content?  Be specific.  Tell me what you would change on the menu itself and determine the cost of each meal with those changes. You will need to ensure that all caloric and nutrient needs have been met with those changes.

INTRODUCTION TO OB: CASE STUDY Birmingham Fitness Gym (BFGym) is a medium-sized


Birmingham Fitness Gym (BFGym) is a medium-sized gym that is very popular among the residents of Birmingham City Centre. The gym has an excellent location right at the heart of the city and is reputable for its friendly staff and amiable atmosphere. The gym consists of a main workout room along with a studio where designated courses take place. The gym used to have a breakout room for staff but this has recently been converted into another training space as the number of customers increased from 200 to 540 subscribers. In total, the gym employs 50 people, distributed among management, personal trainers, class instructors, administrators, and cleaners.

Overall, BFGym has a clear operating structure. Management, consisting of former trainers, puts down a schedule of classes and sessions to be taught and cascades it down to its trainers. So far, customers seem to enjoy coming to the gym primarily because of the professional services that it provides and management was assured that the gym was being effectively managed with satisfied customers and engaged workforce. Strolling around the gym one day, Kate, the head of BFGym, was surprised to have overheard several of the employees talk about quitting their jobs. Knowing how crucial her employees are for the effective functioning of the gym, Kate took the remarks seriously and decided to look further into the issue. She wanted to gain more information in an attempt to keep her staff from quitting. After all, turnover costs are high and Kate did not want to disrupt the atmosphere at the gym. She started off by talking directly to the employees and found out several issues among the class instructors that need to be addressed.

Philip, a 32-year-old class instructor, has been working in BFGym for the past 4 years. Philip is a spinning instructor and while he enjoys teaching and interacting with others, he reported being very bored and ‘un-inspired’ for having been assigned the same spinning class for the past year. He also complained that the attrition rate in the classes is quite high which deters him from forming effective instructor-trainee relationships. Being someone who prefers working with few people at a time, she has, for the large part, done personal training sessions. However, due to an increase in customer demands for classes, Jo was recently assigned classes instead of her one-on-one training sessions. Having to interact with large groups of people proves energy consuming to Jo; she found herself completely drained after giving classes where she often has to shout to make herself heard. Moreover, while enjoying a lot of autonomy when being a personal trainer, she now has to go by the agreed upon classes set by management who often do amendments without consulting the instructors. For example, Jo was quite upset when they decreased the duration of one of her classes from 45 minutes to 30 minutes.

On the other hand, Robin, another class instructor at the gym, reports feeling satisfied with his work. While he mentions that the class routines can be boring at times and that having more leverage would be good, he says that he makes ends meet with his current role and that this is what matters most. He was not thinking of leaving.

Finally, Nick, an experienced trainer who just relocated from Nottingham to Birmingham appeared to be generally satisfied until he started noticing that he is being left with the classes that other trainers do not want to do – particularly those over the weekends and early in the mornings on weekdays. He started feeling that he is being unfairly treated and 3 that probably his colleagues are taking advantage that he is new in town.

Kate noted these viewpoints and wondered how to address these complaints. One of her main objectives is to keep the gym smoothly running and ensure customer satisfaction. She knew very well that to realize her objectives, she needs to have a motivated workforce. One of the ways in which she set out doing so was asking her staff members to come up with solutions to their problems. Kate thought that by gaining ownership to potential solutions, she will have the gym ‘back on track’. Being dominant as he is, Philip instantly assumes the leadership position to organise the task at hand. He kicks off the meeting by asking group members for their desired solutions. As everyone tries to contribute, Nick’s input is somehow discarded. Although Nick felt bad during the meeting, he refrained from voicing his opinion. Nick felt that he did not belong to the group; the remaining members have known each other for quite some time and felt left out. He remained silent for the rest of the meeting. While Philip noticed that Nick was not contributing anymore, he felt he had neither the time nor the energy to deal with the issue and left things as they were.

On the other hand, Robin and Jo did not really have much to bring to the table. Whatever Philip suggested, they adopted. Throughout the meeting, they appeared agitated and wanted to get it done with. They thought that they have already had a long and tiring day at the gym and would just want to make it home to their families by dinner time. Philip was quite unhappy with Robin’s and Jo’s attitude – he also wanted to go home but felt responsible for finishing the task at hand. The legal system is a complex set of rules that provide a framework of predictability and reasonable consistency and continuity for persons and businesses.  All laws have a purpose.  Generally, laws maintain order in Society, protect persons and property, provide guidelines for acceptable, mandatory and prohibited conduct, and establish parameters for handling personal affairs as well as for business transactions and operations.  Laws are dynamic and evolve to reflect changes in Societal needs, interests and demands.  The primary sources of US law include:  the US Constitution, state constitutions, state statutes, federal statutes, administrative law, treaties, and Common Law (also called case law).  US law is divided into two categories, (1) criminal law, called public law, and (2) civil law, or private law.  Criminal law governs offenses considered to be offenses against all Society in general, not just against a specific “victim”; civil law involves private disputes and offenses between individuals.   

Courts and the Legal System, Jurisdiction

The US legal system is based on the old English Common Law system, and thus, the US system is often called a “common law system”, meaning we derive laws from various sources such as statutes and constitutions, but also from case decisions/rulings that are referred to as “case law”.  Case law is an important source of US law that is derived from court cases in which the appropriate court reviews the facts, applies and interprets the relevant law(s) to render a decision, that is, a ruling or holding.   Court decisions have the same force and effect of a law from any other source.

There is a court system for each state, plus the District of Columbia system, as well as a federal court system.  These court systems include trial level courts, intermediate appellate courts, and superior/supreme courts.  There are also specialty federal level courts such as US Bankruptcy Court, US Tax Court, Court of Federal Claims, and the Court of International Trade.   The US Supreme Court is considered the supreme “court in the land”. 

Jurisdiction refers to the legal authority of a court to hear a case and to call parties to the case into court.  The three types of jurisdiction in courts are:

Original Jurisdiction– the court that gets to hear a case first. 

Appellate Jurisdiction– the power for a higher court to review a lower court’s decision.

Exclusive Jurisdiction– only a specific court can hear a specific type of case.

Courts must have subject matter jurisdiction in each case it hears, as well as personal jurisdiction or property jurisdiction (in rem) jurisdiction in each case. 

Constitutional Authority to Regulate Business

Constitutional authority of the federal and state governments to regulate private and public conduct, and to regulate business, is established in the U.S. Constitution. Article VI of the US Constitution, referred to as the “supremacy clause”, establishes the US Constitution as the supreme law of the land, and neither the US Congress nor any state may enact a law that conflicts with the US Constitution.  Constitutional authority to regulate business activities comes from several sources.  One source of authority derives from the Tenth Amendment that grants to the states so-called “police powers” to regulate private activities to protect the general health, safety, and welfare of the public.  Another source of authority comes from Article 1, Section 8, of the US Constitution that empowers the federal government to regulate interstate, and to some extent intrastate, commerce; states are prohibited from enacting laws that unduly interfere with interstate commerce and trade.  The Bill of Rights protects businesses from undue governmental interference in business activities, but also permits some restrictive regulation related to commercial speech, political speech and property searches and seizures.   (Clarkson, K., Miller, R., & Cross, F., 2012, pp. 74-85)

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)

Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provides an alternative to litigation and the court system in order to resolve civil disputes.  It is most useful for family disputes of all types, neighbor and property disputes, and some employment disputes; it is not appropriate for all types of cases.  ADR is advantageous because it can be more flexible, less costly, and less time consuming than litigation.  Types of ADR include negotiation, mediation, non-binding arbitration, and binding arbitration.  With the exception of binding arbitration agreements in labor and business contracts, parties to a dispute may participate in ADR, but retain the legal right to go to court if they are not satisfied with the recommendation/outcome of ADR, or cannot agree to a final resolution of the dispute in an ADR process.

fairness to all is a primary goal of the law, but what is fair to one group may be unfair to another group; what is fair in one situation may be unfair in another situation – every right granted to an individual or group, to some extent, impinges on the rights of another individual or group;

the familiar symbol for law and the legal system is the Scale of Justice showing a blindfolded lady that represents the weighing and balancing process necessary to balance rights v. restrictions granted and imposed by laws.

This is an instructional objective for a second grade class. They usually start with double digit numbers in the first half of the year and graduate to triple digit numbers by the end of the year

In my opinion the use of “written in equation form” does not need to be there. For a second grade child who is learning these bigger numbers, I think, it may be confusing to put that extra phrase in there. I think the objective would be clearer if it simply stated, “Given two double-digit numbers, the students will add them together.” I also however, understand that in order for the teacher to be specific, and to show how the numbers will be written, they need to have that phrase written down.

I think the key word, or verb (as was said earlier) in this instructional objective is “add”. This lets the children know what they need to be doing with the two double-digit numbers.

The kind of learning that is represented by this instructional objective could be a combination of visual, auditory and kinesthetic, depending on how the teacher will teach the lesson. For visual she can write it on the board, the auditory will be her speaking and instructing how to go about adding the numbers and the kinesthetic could come in to play if she brought out flash cards with numbers written on it, or any type of object that the children can physically count together (like blocks or pencils etc)

If this was a lesson that I was going to teach, I would try and incorporate all the styles of learning, as I suggested above. I would write the equation on the board (for example 13+10) one underneath each other, of course. I would also give each of them the same number of little blocks. I would then ask them to count out loud ten of the little blocks they have in front of them. I would then ask them to put those blocks on one side of their desk and then count the other thirteen on the other side of their desk. We would then go back and count them again, this time all together so that they can all get to the same number, the correct answer of 23. I would then go back to the board where the equation is written and show them the way of adding numbers without counting blocks, where they add each number at a time to the number above it and write the answer underneath the equation. I would then do some more examples with them and proceed with giving them a few to do on their own in class.[supanova_question]

In the history of developmental education, intrinsic motivation has been considered a critical factor that influences students’ academic performance. However, what will influence students’ intrinsic motivation toward study still needs further exploration. The study’s authors were curious to see the correlation between self-esteem, operant conditioning (positive vs. negative), and intrinsic motivation. According to the previous research, students with high self-esteem tend to act more performance-approach and focus on academic performance successfully. This group of people shows a higher intrinsic motivation toward the study. Students with low self-esteem perform more as performance-avoidance; their study goals focus on not failing the class, and they usually report a lower intrinsic motivation (Baumeister & Tice, 1985; Mayer, 2008). On top of that, positive operant conditioning, the reward, increases students’ intrinsic motivation and could help students’ grades (Deci, 1999). The result shows that operant conditioning has a significant effect on intrinsic motivation which provide support for Deci’s research on extrinsic reward on intrinsic motivation. The insignificant result on self-esteem put forward a dispute to previous research which claims self-esteem could make an influence on students’ intrinsic motivation.


Why would we study intrinsic motivation?

In school, people always classify students as good or bad by their grades. Nevertheless, grades can indeed affect a students’ future. Intrinsic motivation will be crucial to the accomplishment of students’ studies. Since intrinsic motivation improves academic performance (Nishimura, T., Kawamura, S., & Sakurai, S., 2011). The higher intrinsic motivation students have toward study, the better they achieve in their academic life. Intrinsic motivation to study is essential for student success in their school life. It is necessary for researchers of this study to understand what intrinsic motivation is and how that will influence students’ academic performance.

Self-esteem with intrinsic motivation

Self-esteem is not gained from elsewhere but from each student’s self-identity and how they strengthen the inner self. Self-esteem serves as a factor interpreting a student’s intrinsic motivation. There is a positive correlation between students’ intrinsic motivation and self-esteem (Basco, 2016). Those who are more confident in studying could learn better (Mayer, 2008). To further explain how self-esteem functions on students’ intrinsic motivation, students with higher self-esteem tend to show higher intrinsic motivation for self-determination and higher persistence with their study. Based on the self-verification theory, people want others to see them as they see themselves and consolidate that view with actions (Talaifar, 2020). The self-verification theory further proves that students with higher self-esteem prefer to achieve higher academic goals. Students with lower self-esteem students were less likely to pursue the possibility of achievement goals (Komarraju, 2014). This point could apply to our study since we seek to know how intrinsic motivation is developed for students’ academic performance.

Operant conditioning with intrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation is not only determined by students’ selves but also changes from the society around them. Although different environments provide various types of conditioning, some are rewards, and some are punishment. Each different type of conditioning will influence students’ academic performance in various ways. Rewards can increase intrinsic motivation when individuals interpret the reward as a confirmation of competence (Deci, 1999). However, the threat of punishment can decrease intrinsic motivation (Deci, 1972). Students’ intrinsic motivations could also be influenced by different conditioning students receive from the outside world. The cognitive evaluation theory also claims that intrinsic motivation is determined by the psychological need for confidence and support (Deci, 1980). People’s intrinsic motivation will gradually increase if they receive a reward for their actions. This action they will do acts as positive reinforcement, even increasing the likelihood of their future performances. However, punishment will decrease people’s enthusiasm. They will show a passive attitude approaching what they will do, so their intrinsic motivation to do things will also reduce.

Self-esteem, Operant conditioning, and intrinsic motivation

Self-esteem mainly functions on students’ intrinsic motivation toward the study. Students with high self-esteem have the highest intrinsic motivation after success. Students with low self-esteem have the highest intrinsic motivation following failure (Baumeister & Tice in 1985). Previous studies were limited to the influence of intrinsic motivation after success or failure. We would like to elaborate on this study in our research because Baumeister’s theory can be outdated. Instead of using success/ failure as independent variables, we will manipulate positive/ negative operant conditioning. By replacing the independent variables with different operant conditioning, we could explore the intrinsic motivations. This research will provide a broader aspect of what will influence students’ motivation.

Gender and intrinsic motivation

Gender could act as a moderator that influences motivation. Based on the previous research, males tend to show higher extrinsic motivation than females since males significantly influence external identification and social standing. Females tend to show higher intrinsic motivation than males (Blanck, 1984). There was a significant interaction between gender and student-type on intrinsic motivation to learn (Helen & Naomi 2003). Comes to the participants’ reported self-esteem, male participants will have slightly higher self-esteem scores than female participants.


Our research study tends to find what could increase students’ intrinsic motivation to help them in their academic performance. The previous study acknowledges that self-esteem and operant conditioning are two factors that may cause a change in students’ intrinsic motivation (Baumeister & Tice in 1985; Deci, 1999). According to the self-verification theory, self-esteem is positively correlated with intrinsic motivation. We predict that students with high self-esteem tend to have higher intrinsic motivation than students with low self-esteem (Talaifar, 2020). The cognitive evaluation theory supported operant conditioning under reward situations intrinsic motivation will increase, and intrinsic motivation will decrease under punishment conditions (Deci, 1980). Based on the theory, we could predict that people are more motivated under the reward condition. Also, there will be an interaction between self-esteem and operant conditioning. People want others to have an equivalent view as they do regarding themselves (Talaifar, 2020). We also believe there is a moderator that gender will also influence intrinsic motivation. This project aims to develop an overarching framework to understand better what will affect students’ intrinsic motivation in their studies and how to improve their intrinsic motivation toward studies.


1. We hypothesize that participants with high self-esteem will show higher intrinsic motivation in studying than those with low self-esteem.

2. Our second hypothesis is that for operant conditioning manipulation, participants in the reward condition will show higher motivation than those in the punishment condition.

3. Female participants will show a higher intrinsic motivation than male participants.

4. We hypothesize that there will be an interaction between self-esteem and operant conditioning. With positive reinforcement manipulation, those participants high in self-esteem will show higher levels of intrinsic motivation than those participants low in self-esteem. With negative reinforcement manipulation, those low in self-esteem will show higher levels of intrinsic motivation than those participants high in self-esteem. Participants with high self-esteem tend to show the highest motivation under reward conditions, and those with low self-esteem tend to show the lowest motivation under reward conditions.


This study is a 2 (self-esteem: high vs. low) X 2 (operant conditioning: reward vs. punishment). The Within-subject experimental design was employed in our experiment. By using with-in subject will ensure accessible experiment data to the result. This study is operationalized on a survey-based experiment. There is a moderator gender, and our group will classify it as female and male. The first variable that has been measured is self-esteem. This is operationalized based on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, M.,1965). Our research team will apply a medium split to categorize the participants to either high self-esteem or low self-esteem. Then motivation will be measured based on the SIMS survey (Guay, 2000), participants will be randomly assigned to operant conditions in different orders. This dependent variable is measured with survey scores regarding intrinsic motivation under reward or punishment conditions.


91 undergraduate psychology students participated without paying in this 2*2 analysis of variance design. 60% are male, and 40% are female. Participants were primarily recruited by taking the PSY 120L course, and each of the research members will recruit ten students in UCSB who are not taking this course. Each participant will see both scenarios in a different order. Half of the participants will get the reward scenario first, and the other half will get the punishment scenario first. We are covered under an educational IRB. Our course instructor, and Dr. Elliott Ihm, also actively reviewed our research designs which led to full approval to collect data.


We will tell participants the experiment’s instructions, like how long the surveys will take and what they are supposed to do, by sending emails to undergraduate students who volunteer in this research. Also, allow them to withdraw at any time of the experiment. Participants who agreed to participate will receive a link to the Qualtrics survey. After that, we will ask the participants to fill out the self-esteem survey to investigate their Self-Esteem level based on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Participants will be randomized to a different order of hypothetical scenarios. Each participant will see both scenarios in a different order. Participants will get a randomized order of two hypothetical situations (reward condition vs. punishment condition): half of the group will get reward condition first, and the other half will get punishment condition first. Next, they were asked to provide their age, gender, ethnicity, and class level. The data will be collected from Qualtrics and will be calculated through R studio. We will debrief all participants by gratitude for the participants’ time and contribution. Other than that, we will explain what was being studied.

Measures and Apparatus


Our research would be survey-based. We will be using the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (Rosenberg, M.,1965) to estimate students’ self-esteem levels. This scale is a high internal consistent scale with a coefficient of reproducibility of 0.92. Other than that, this scale is highly stabled test-retest reliability over 2 weeks with correlations of 0.85 and 0.88. It also correlates with other measures of self-esteem, including the Coopersmith self-esteem inventory. There is a total of 10 items included in this survey. Each item scored 1(Strongly disagree) to 4(strongly agree). Items 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 are reverse-scored items in this survey. Sum up all the items. Higher scores represent higher self-esteem levels.

Intrinsic motivation

Guay’s situational motivation scale will be employed to test students’ intrinsic motivation (Guay, 2000). The SIMS assess the constructs of intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation, and motivation. This scale holds high internal consistency. We will give this scale under two specific imaginations of hypothetical scenarios. There will be eight items in these surveys. None of them is reverse coded. Each item scored 1(corresponds not at all) to 7 (corresponds exactly). A higher score represented higher motivation under each reinforcement.


The data were analyzed using a 2 (High Self-Esteem vs. Low Self-Esteem) x 2 (Reward condition vs. Punishment condition) ANOVA on motivation. Since intrinsic motivation is a continuous variable, we conducted a median split where scores above 32.0 are considered “high motivation” and “low motivation” below the median.” The moderator effect of gender on intrinsic motivation was not-significant for both scenario (F[1,178] = 1.15 p = 0.64) under reward scenario, and (F[1,178] = 1.59 p = 0.12) under punishment scenario. This indicated that gender does not cause any changes to intrinsic motivation in this experimental design.

The main effect of self-esteem on motivation was non-significant (F[df, df] = 0.61[1, 178] p = 0.434). Participants with high self-esteem resulted in a mean of 33.5, while the low self-esteem resulted in 29.9. This indicates that self-esteem does not directly affect participants’ intrinsic motivation during this experiment.

The main effect of operant conditioning on motivation was significant (F[df, df] = 6.78 [1, 178] p = 0.010). For motivation under reward, conditions conduct a mean of 32.2 and 29.9 as a mean of motivation under punishment conditions. This indicates that people have higher intrinsic motivation under reward conditions than punishment conditions.  

The interaction effect of self-esteem and operant conditioning on motivation was not significant (F[df, df] = 0.35 [1, 178] p = 0.555). The means for high self-esteem with reward conditions was 34.4, and 32.5 for high self-esteem under punishment conditions. 30.0 for low self-esteem under reward condition, and 31.1 for low self-esteem under punishment condition. This indicates no interaction between self-esteem and operant conditioning on motivation during this experiment.


This experiment studies the independent variables of self-esteem and operant conditioning with a moderator of gender among the outcome of students’ intrinsic motivation. The experimenters predict a positive correlation between self-esteem and intrinsic motivation. The second prediction they made on operant conditioning was that reward tends to increase students’ intrinsic motivation than under punishment conditions. They also predict that female participant will show a higher intrinsic motivation than male participants. The result conducts a significant main effect finding of this study was the correlation between operant conditioning and intrinsic motivation. The result supported our hypothesis that participants under the reward condition will show a higher intrinsic motivation than the punishment condition. This means rewards could help students in their academic performance, Participants under reward conditions tend to show a higher intrinsic motivation than participants under punishment conditions. However, the result shows no effect on self-esteem and no interaction effect. This means that self-esteem does not function as an independent variable that significantly influences students’ intrinsic motivation under this research. Other than that, the moderator effect was also not significant. Female and male participants do not show differences in their intrinsic motivation during this experiment.


There are several limitations to this study. First, our study was conducted with such a small sample size and is constrained to the population of UCSB college students, which means it may not apply to different groups of people like students in elementary school or adults who already worked. The limitation of insufficient data size possibly directs to the insignificant main effect of self-esteem. In addition to this, other variables may also influence intrinsic motivation. Since it is a survey-based experiment trying to manipulate variables that may cause an effect on the result; however, there are other variables we did not encounter, like self-efficacy, that could also cause changes to our dependent variable. Higher self-efficacy is correlated with higher intrinsic motivation.

Future Implications

This current study supports the cognitive evaluation theory that people’s motivation will increase when the project comes with a reward (Deci, 1980). However, this experiment was conducted with money-based reinforcement. To further explore, try to use different reward and punishment conditions which could also increase ecological validity. Further research should consider testing the self-esteem again with a more extensive and varied population. Rerun the same test to see if there was a significant result. Try to manipulate another variable that could also change intrinsic motivation.


Giving rewards could raise students’ intrinsic motivation. It is important for teachers to apply this result as a strategy in the effect of inspiring students’ study interests. The brain likes rewards. The rewards for learning should be strongly correlated with the education itself. By doing this will motivate students to take ownership of their learning.

The company I chose for the digital marketing campaign is Lemonade, the top insurance company in America and is in the financial services industry. The company’s -headquarters are in New York City, and it was launched in 2016 September. Lemonade has software that performs all tasks automatically to deliver services through its application and websites (Peverelli & Feniks, 2017). This essay will explain the company’s micro and macro-environment in operating the digital marketing campaign.


Competitor’s Analysis

Lemonade Inc. faces competition from approximately fifteen insurance companies, including Cover, Spixxi, Zelros, and Jetty. All the above companies have different investment stages, market value, and monthly prices, making them more competitive, especially since customers prefer the most convenient (Lemonade Inc’s Competitiveness, n.d.). However, according to Jennewine (2020), Lemonade Inc. has a broader market share because its creation was for a digital world where it used AI to make business more efficient, especially since many operations are digital.

Digital Market Intermediaries

Lemonade does not have any physical intermediaries. It conducts all its operations through software. In this case, Lemonade is a broker and uses its digital platforms to supply insurance services to all its customers (Overholt, 2020). If a customer needs their services, they can complete all processes online; for example, a customer could apply for the services through the company’s application or its website, which has layers of encryption for safety.

Customer’s Persona

All Lemonade’s customers are adults, mostly from age 25 to 50s. This target population has been the best so far because most rely on the internet for many services. However, Lemonade seeks to start marketing to millennials who have a better chance of buying their services and maintaining them (Al-Saad, 2019). Millennials have a high dependence on internet services because they find them easy to access. They also have better knowledge of the internet, making them more convenient for selling their services to.

Lemonade’s Macro-Environment

Technological Forces

Lemonade uses AI as its more appropriate technology to show the financial progress it makes in its market. According to Commercial Property Damage (2021), AI technology has helped reduce losses and level all risks. The technology has helped detect suspicious and fraudulent activities, making it easy to maintain all threats before they cause any losses (OECD, 2017). The company also uses bots to conduct all tasks involved in delivering insurance services. Therefore, the company must assess its AI and bot to ensure they operate effectively to avoid unwanted incidences.

Legal forces

Lemonade’s operations result from Dutch Law and policies that control its facilities, personnel, and services to ensure all insurance claims and payments are practical and operational. The Dutch law has allowed Lemonade to sell its services to people from Europe and other continents (Lemonade, n.d.). The company’s policyholders play a significant role in identifying discrimination and violent activities involved with the company’s services and employees (Canaparo, 2020). Therefore, Lemonade must monitor its employees’ adherence to all policies to prevent any activities that could cause losses.


Conclusively, after analyzing Lemonade’s micro and macro-environment, it is clear that it has a better advantage to top the competitive market. It could focus on marketing its services to the millennials to increase its chances of gaining a long-term need. Step 1: Format in Microsoft PowerPoint

First, you need to open Microsoft PowerPoint. Then you need to make a new presentation that will be one slide which needs to be very big. Follow the instructions from the following link on how to make sure your slide is formatted correctly. Your poster should be 48 inches wide × 36 inches tall. Save your Poster PPT slide.

A. Open a new PPT slide show

B. In the search bar at the top of the screen type “Slide Size”.

C. Click on “Slide Size” and then choose “Custom Slide Size…”.

D. A menu should appear which will let you choose the width and the height of the slide in inches. Set the width to be 48 inches wide and the height to be 36 inches.

E. Then In windows, I would press ok to reveal a second menu, though with your version it may be the same. Choose Ensure Fit.

F. Now you should have a poster sized PPT that you can edit.

Step 2: Make your Poster

This is when you need to add all of your content to the PowerPoint slide. You probably want to type up your paragraphs, title, references list, and etc. in a separate word document and then copy and paste the various “blocks” onto the slide. To have the text as separate movable paragraphs you can add separate text boxes if you go to the Ribbon and click on Insert and then Text Box. Draw the box, copy in your text, and edit as needed. You can also change the colors of textboxes (fill and borders) and transparency of the colors for extra pizzaz.

Then you can also make sure to have headers (more textboxes) to find the information easily and add your map (Insert/Picture and find your saved map file).

Don’t forget to save your poster as you go. Also, you can print your poster on a single normal sized piece of paper and hold it at arm’s length to roughly check the scale. Also, if you are planning on printing it in black and white, making sure to test it before you use 16 pieces of paper for the full sized poster is useful to check for legibility.

Step 3: Export to *.PDF

Once you are done hit ctrl/command and then S. Make sure you save your PowerPoint Slide one more time. Then to prepare to print your poster, you will want to go to File / Export / Save as a PDF. Then you will need to save the PDF file in a place where you can find it.

On the last day of our class, you will turn in your PDF file to me electronically on Canvas.

Step 4: Print from Adobe Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat is a PDF reader that is free to download. To print your poster in multiple pages you need to “tile” your poster. Follow the instructions from the following website on printing your poster.


In the printer menu, select poster, as is shown below. Note, in the print preview section on the right it has already configured this poster into 4 x 6 pieces of paper (each piece of paper is separated with a grey dashed line) and there is extra space left over (shown with the white margin).

Once it is printed, you can use tape and scissors to put all of the pieces together. My recommendation for strength is to cut the margin off of one side of the paper but leave part of the margin on the other piece of paper to strengthen the back.

Printing in color is a plus, but not required. If you set up your poster electronically with all of the content nicely in black and white intentionally, it will look great. You can add color to your poster afterwards, but you need to make sure that the electronic copy you turn in has all of the content properly placed.[supanova_question]

However, this has become a significant challenge in most companies and other business organizations (Onwubiko, 2015). The use of poor security systems in an organization enables the hackers to easily access the company information, resulting in the theft of the company information and damages due to unauthorized access to customer information. This discussion will focus on cyber security challenges in business organizations.

T-Mobile or Deutsche Telekom is one of the critical companies that have recently experienced a cyber-attack. Deutsche Telekom is a mobile telecommunication company that operates in different nations, including the United States, Poland, Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. The company was founded in December 1999 by Deutsche Telekom. In 2019 the company collected a revenue of $44.9 Billion and had its headquarters in Bonn, Germany. The company uses T-Mobile as the brand name for the company. T-Mobile has developed the most recent, most significant, and fastest 5G network to be utilized in America and other parts of the world. The critical services from the company include internet services and mobile phones products (“T-Mobile & Sprint merged to create the leader in 5G”, 2021). However, the company has been experiencing cyber security challenges, which have impacted the company’s performance. The company consists of over fifty-two thousand employees.

Over the past few months, T-Mobile has been working tirelessly to navigate over a malicious cyber-attack that happened on their systems. During the event, T-Mobile systems were subjected to criminal cyber-attack that endangered the information of millions of customers, including the current, former, and prospective customers. However, the data breach action did not expose customers’ financial, credit card, debit, or any other form of financial information. However, other information, including date of birth, address name, ID information, was breached. This was an adverse impact on the company since they have the legal obligation to safe keep the customer information and ensure effective prevention of such activities from occurring (“The Cyberattack Against T?Mobile and Our Customers: What happened, and what we are doing about it. | T?Mobile Newsroom”, 2021).

Cyber-attack challenge has continued to rise as hackers continue to identify more avenues to attack companies’ systems and use the accessed information to exploit the companies. Therefore, the companies need to develop more measures to stay ahead of the hackers to prevent them from successfully performing the attack. In addition, there is a need to increase the security points to the company system servers to mitigate the risk of customer data breaches. The breach in T-Mobile Company presents how cyber-security challenges impact companies’ operations, forcing the customers to seek more secure organizations (Nobles, 2018).

Organizational theory

The essential organizational theory that relates to the current problem is modern systems theory. The theory proposes that all the organization systems interrelate nonlinearly, making a change impact on many others. This is evident since the attack on the company’s operation systems impacts all the other areas of operation, which may even contribute to significant financial losses. In addition, small changes can contribute to a considerable impact on the organization variables. Similarly, massive changes in the company’s operation may result in a significant effect that influences the company’s activities. The theory also provides that the company operates in an open system that enables the company to successfully adjust to changes taking place in the environment to promote better performance. Therefore, more advancements need to be enhanced on the organization systems to keep away hackers based on the technology change.


The critical benefit of solving the problem includes protecting organization data and networks from unauthorized access that would result in data damage. The other use is improved data protection and company continuity management on the organization information. The other benefit is improved stakeholder confidence in the information, including customers, due to adequate security. The advantage is the improved company credentials accurate security controls to ensure data protection (Wang & Wang, 2019). In addition, solving the problem helps develop standards toward protecting the company information and controlling the number of cybercrimes.


The potential barriers toward addressing cyber security challenges in businesses include ransomware attacks which pose a significant challenge to the cyber security problem. The other barrier is the high amount of capital required to install on the organization systems to keep away hackers. The other barrier is IoT attacks that enable hackers to transmit data over the network. Attacks on IoT devices endanger the organization’s sensitive data. As a result, securing IoT devices, including laptops, desktops, and smartphones, has become a significant challenge in ensuring cyber security. The other barriers include cloud attacks, phishing attacks, and the use of outdated hardware.

Problem statement

Due to the increased use of IoT devices such as computers, laptops, and mobile phones in company operations, successful measures and new forms of technology need to be implemented to mitigate cyber-attacks and protect company information. This case study will explore three civil aviation accidents involving the de Haviland DH-106 Comet 1 aircraft, G-ALYV at Calcutta, G-ALYY at Naples, and G-ALYP at Elba. The study will also focus on fatigue testing accomplished on G-ALYR. This paper will involve an analysis of the three aviation accidents and compare the common factors that contributed to the catastrophes.

Primary Causal Factors of the Accidents

Civil aviation accidents are characterized by several causes, but a lot of analytics put more effort into the primary factors. The human factor is staged as the most probable causal factor of civil aviation accidents. Studies propose that human error takes the bigger proportion of all the catastrophic civil aviation incidents and accidents (Qinqin, 2020). The laws that prohibit an estimated 5.85 million Americans with felony convictions from voting are one of the last remaining legal barriers to full democratic participation in our nation.

Like the antiquated laws that excluded women, people of color and the poor from the ballot box, felon disenfranchisement laws are an anti-democratic tool with a sordid history of discrimination. Today, they intersect with the profound racial disparities in the U.S. criminal justice system to keep one out of every 13 African-Americans from voting.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s recent executive order restoring voting rights to the more than 200,000 Virginians with felony convictions — which keeps one in five African-Americans from voting there — is the powerful leadership needed across the nation to combat vestiges of de jure racial discrimination and recent retrenchment on voting rights more broadly.

In 1985, the landmark Supreme Court case, Hunter v. Underwood, revealed the racist roots of felon disenfranchisement laws in Alabama. Persons convicted of crimes “involving moral turpitude” were not allowed to vote. Yet African-Americans were so disproportionately affected by this law, the Supreme Court struck it down, and indeed found evidence that the law was passed to intentionally exclude blacks from the ballot. Alabama’s unabashed pursuit of white supremacy through the enactment of these laws rendered them unconstitutional.

Virginia’s laws have similarly ignominious origins. A 1906 report quoting the former Virginia state senator Carter Glass forecast that voting laws passed in 1902 would “eliminate the darkey as a political factor in this State in less than five years, so that in no single county of the Commonwealth will there be the least concern felt for the complete supremacy of the white race in the affairs of government.”

What’s more, modern support for felon disenfranchisement is often based on negative assumptions about how someone’s identity, status or past behavior will inform his or her choices in the ballot box. But assumptions about a voter’s viewpoint violate First Amendment principles.

Instead, we should be doing everything possible to successfully integrate the estimated 636,000 people released from prisons each year into society, such as passing federal legislation like the Democracy Restoration Act — which has been introduced over and over again, in legislative session after session — to ban felon disenfranchisement and end unnecessary criminal background checks. These and other re-entry tools are critical to reducing recidivism and reversing the deleterious effects of our outsized carceral state.

In a country that has the highest incarceration rate of any modern democratic nation, laws that prevent prisoners from voting also imprison our democracy. The disfranchisement of people with felony convictions is one of the most pressing civil rights issues of our time.

Janai Nelson is an associate director at the legal defense and a professor who makes her voice heard as an African American. As a huge person in the eye, she is defending and standing up or the many African Americans who are held back from voting. As laws before prohibited woman, colored people and people facing poverty to vote she also argues for the fact that many colored people are still being held back from voting. With the certain restrictions to vote for people who served time, many of those people in the category are colored people. As many states create laws for people who have served jailtime, many restrictions hold colored people back instead of just creating a system which they must go through and pass to ensure purity they are just being held back from one of their amendments.[supanova_question]

Assess the concept of the “great man” theory in history. To what degree do the events that define the process of history depend on the influence of “great” individuals? Compare the Spanish conquest of Mexico and other areas of the Western hemisphere to the Holocaust and the era of World War II from 1939-1945. To what degree can we assign the blame or the credit for such events to leaders such as Cortes or Hitler? What other forces must be considered, if any? How do we begin to understand the levels of cruelty and violence unleashed at specific moments in history? Are such events the result of specific decisions made by powerful yet perverse individuals or the inevitable consequence of forces always part of human society?

De Sade argues that power, pleasure and violence are all expressions on the part of individuals or groups in search of self-realization. History too can be defined as a process by which power manifests itself in the individual or group awareness of “self” through domination of a lesser “other”. To what degree do the concepts of “self” and “other” figure into the psychology of individuals such as Vlad Dracula or the witch hunts and crazes of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries? In each case, how does religion itself provide sanction for extreme cruelty as a form of pleasure? Must we accept Sade’s view of cruelty and selfhood? Explain in detail.

Consider the view of punishment offered by Foucault as an analysis of social evolution in the Western experience. In what sense, if any, are we justified in arguing that history is progressive—that it leads from a “lesser” to a “better” way of organizing society? If society does “progress”, what is the measuring stick we must employ and what is the ultimate goal? How do Foucault’s studies of punishment and the birth of the prison demonstrate this idea of “progress”? Consider two other texts we have read this semester that support your point of view.

Key ratios have been applied to finance the performance of Walmart company. The key ratios are categorized as liquidity, profitability, operating performance, debt, investment valuation, and cash flow.

Profit margin is the ratio of net profit and sales. It is used in determining whether a firm has enough sales to pay the expenses. The above table indicates a positive profit margin which is an indication of profit made during the period. There is a rise in 2020 but a slight decline in 2021. Return on assets shows whether a company manages the assets well to generate profit. It is positive and hence profit is generated (Easton, 2018). There is an increase in 2020 and a decline in 2021. The year 2021 performs poorly in terms of profitability. Return on equity is used to determine whether equity is enough to generate profit. The company performance posts a rise in 2020 but declines in 2021. Return on capital illustrates the efficiency in the utilization of capital to generate net earnings. The company performs well in profitability. However, the year 2021 indicates poor performance due to a decline

The liquidity of Walmart is assessed through the use of cash, quick, and current ratio. The current ratio is used to indicate whether Walmart has sufficient current assets to pay the current obligations. The current ratio is less than 1 which is an indication that current assets are not sufficient to clear the current obligations of the company. Quick ratio shows whether quick assets are sufficient to clear the current liabilities. The cash ratio is used to indicate whether cash is enough to pay the current liabilities. These ratios indicate that the liquidity of Walmart company is low during the three years. However, there has been an improvement in the liquidity ability of Walmart.

The ratios above are used to measure the long-term solvency of Walmart. The debt ratio shows that the amount of assets is more than the debt in the firm which is a good indication of long-term solvency (Monahan, 2018). The interest coverage ratio shows the sufficiency of the company to pay interest expenses through the use of more operating income. The year ended 2021 register the best performance in terms of solvency.

The profitability ratios show that investors will gain dividends as a result of their investments. Hurricane Tracking: From the NHC website, plot the tracks of the Hurricanes on the list for the 2019 season on the NOAA Hurricane Tracking Chart. You can get the information needed on the website by clicking on the individual hurricanes. You should have a line with a daily plot point for each Hurricane from formation to dissipation. Your plot should include notations of date of formation, date of dissipation, indication of strength on the Saffir Simpson Scale for each plotted point.
