The students will be required to read the assigned book, which is written by author Sarah Burns and entitled, “The Central Park Five”, that will be used during this course, and then write a critical book review about it. While one component of a book review is to summarize the content of the book, another of the main purposes of this assignment is to provide a critical analysis on the content, format, argument, and context of the book.
You will be graded on your ability to effectively summarize the book, its contents, and the overall messages that the author is trying to convey to readers. You should try to make sure that your paper serves as an effective tool to educate the reader of your paper as to the overall contents and quality of this book.
In your paper, you should also discuss topics such as the ones listed below:
-You should summarize the facts of the primary criminal case that is discussed throughout the text, as well as to explain the problems with the prosecution that caused the case to end up the way that it did.
-You should address other overarching problems within the criminal justice system that are raised by the author, including, but not limited to system racism within the criminal justice system, how the law enforcement officials and prosecution may have contributed to this injustice by the way they questioned the defendants and prosecuted the case, poor legal representation by the attorneys who represented these defendants, and the way the media portrayed these young man throughout the pendency of the case.
-Based on your reading of this book, what suggestions do you have to help improve or fine tune the American criminal justice system to make it better?
