Both Cathy Davidson’s “Project Classroom Makeover” (2011) and Jean Twenge’s “An Army of One: Me” (2006) offer criticisms about the way in which society is preparing a new generation of Americans for the future. Davidson explores areas of resistance while insisting on the necessity for innovation and change as society strives “to take advantage of all the remarkable digital benefits of the twenty-first century” (Davidson), while Twenge cautions that well-intentioned efforts to improve society may be accompanied by unintended ill-effects. Twenge points to the modern emphasis on self-esteem as a primary example of something intended to improve the wellbeing of an entire generation, but that instead “results in kids who can’t take criticism… [who are] unfriendly, rude, and uncooperative” (495). Franklin Foer (2017) offers an additional layer of consideration as he unpacks the potential effects of Facebook (a social network that was still nascent when Twenge wrote “An Army of One”) on society. In doing so, Foer offers insights on areas of society (and humanity) that are discussed across all of the readings: the importance of creativity, the unsettling ubiquity and power of new technologies, and the unintended consequences that often accompany well-intentioned actions.
