5-1 Discussion: Strategically Appropriate Investment Project
Business: The business I have selected for a strategically appropriate investment project is Major League Soccer (MLS). MLS’s vision is to be among one of the best soccer leagues in the world by 2022. Soccer in the U.S. is thriving with increased exposure on television, increasing crowds, and major investments by owners. Because of the intensely competitive nature of the global marketplace for talent, MLS will not and should not ‘outspend’ other leagues to gain talent without revenue streams to support this investment. Therefore, an investment MLS might consider is to invest in a “Center of Excellence” that trains and develops coaches to ultimately improve youth development and young players. By developing players, MLS can improve the quality of its product and create a demand for its players in the global marketplace.
Not-for-Profit Business: The not-for-profit business I have selected for a strategically appropriate investment is the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). The vision of USSF is to be the preeminent sport in the United States. USSF and its professional leagues (i.e., MLS, NASL, USL) must work in a symbiotic manner to grow the game in the United States. One way the USSF can help each of its professional leagues is to develop a coaching licensing program that significantly elevates the minimum standards to become a professional coach. The higher standards that are offered and set will help improve the educational components of coaching in the U.S. and ultimately have a positive impact on the development of players in this country.
State, Provincial, National Government: The national government I have selected for a strategically appropriate investment is the United States government. Lieb (2016) argues that an overhaul of the U.S. interstate highway system, bridges and roads, wastewater systems, dams and levees, airports, railroads and the mass transit system are in dire need of repair. Given the age of these systems and the importance they provide to the U.S. economy, an investment in infrastructure has been long overdue. Because of the massive cost to improve the infrastructure, the government will either need to re-assign investments (i.e., defense, entitlements) in its current budget or increase taxes to pay for the expenditure. The last infrastructure report card issued by the American Society of Civil Engineers grades the U.S. infrastructure at a D+ with an estimated investment needed by 2020 at $3.6 trillion.

discussion 2
It’s hard to believe but the conglomerate that is the National Football League up until 2014 was in fact a not for profit business in the United States. Since 1942 the NFL had qualified as a 501(c)(6), which is the designation given to business leagues, trade groups, and organizations that promote their industry and are not for-profit enterprises. The main reason the NFL gave up their tax exempt status was merely to gain privacy as they no longer have to disclose information about executive pay, and other key financial figures. With that being said, all of the 32 franchises in the NFL are in fact for profit businesses that are taxed on all of their profits, with the exception of the Green Bay Packers. The Green Bay Packers are able to maintain a status of Non-Profit as they are owned by their fans, roughly 350,000 shareholders, but the catch is, the shareholders do not share in any of the profits as the profits must be repurposed back into the business.
A realistic but yet aggressive project for the Green Bay Packers would be to build a new stadium to play in. Their current stadium Lambeau Field was constructed in 1957 and has a capacity of 81,435, which is the third largest of all the NFL stadiums. Though it has been renovated multiple times from 2001-2003, as well as 2012-2015, it still severely lacks in the technological, commercial, and luxury experiences as the rest of the league. Building a new stadium would provide opportunity to compete with the television experience as fans are continuing to stay home more and more as the games are becoming too expensive to go to and the experience at home has improved dramatically the last ten years.
From a Government perspective, my home is located in Dover, New Hampshire and over the last 3-4 years there has been an ongoing debate as to whether there needs to be a new high school built, or just renovations to be done. The area we reside in is a prospering area, known as the fastest growing community in the entire state. There are a handful of private schools within 15 miles, and with neighboring towns feeding into other public schools like ours, there is a lot of competition to attract those students. Building a new high school will be a burden on the tax payers like myself, but it would make sense for the community as students need to have the right technology, and amount of space to create a good learning environment.

Discussion 12- Chapter 23- Social Movements
No unread replies.No replies.
Through the advent of social media, a thing known as “slactivism” has arisen. This is literally activism through social media and, despite such a negative label, researchers are finding that this actually works! Activism through the medium of social media is having a significant impact. This is just ONE example of many of not only a “mass behavior” but can also fit into all 4 categories of social movements. The individuals involved in this mass behavior/social behavior could easily be examined within the lens of the “contagion theory” as well as the “emergent-norm theory.”
For this question, choose 1 SPECIFIC social movement going on today. It can be associated with or without social media. It can be Black Lives Matter, the Anti-Vaccination movement or a movement to clean up our oceans, etc.. Find an article explaining this movement and answer the following questions:
1. What type of social movement does your movement fall under?
2. What theory of crowd behavior can be applied to this movement? Please expand
3. What Social movement theory can be applied to this movement? Please expand
4. At what stage in the social movement cycle would you place this movement?
