Please choose one of the following questions to answer for this unit by Wednesday at 11:59pm (CST). You should also respond to two of your classmates’ postings by Sunday at 11:59pm (CST).
Before answering this unit’s questions, you should read “Next Door Monsters: The Dialectic of Normality and Monstrosity in True-Crime Narratives,” p. 175 in Natural Born Celebrities.
These postings will be written responses.
Directions
Full-bodied entries—of at least ten sentences of writing from you (in addition to quotations from the text)—are more likely to receive full credit. Lesser credit will be assigned to work that is missing, brief, or clearly disengaged or sloppily produced such that miscues interfere with readability.
Your responses to other students’ work are also assessed. Students often resist commenting on each others’ work in substantial ways; instead choosing to post simply “good job” or “looks okay to me.” This kind of peer response doesn’t help your own—or your peers’—development as a writer and thinker.
Acceptable peer responses will, among other things:
- Explicitly identify what was learned from someone else’s work.
- Ask a follow-up question.
- Offer an alternative interpretation.
- Offer concrete strategies for improvement.
Questions (Reading)
Choose one questions to answer:
- Schmid argues that the position of the criminal as an “insider” in a community or his position as an “outsider” from the community helps us to understand the persistent trend in crime procedural films and television shows. Using material from the chapter, show us how this applies to Norman Bates? Is he an insider or an outsider–and how does this help us accept/reject him?
- “In some respects, the absence of sympathy for the criminal in contemporary true-crime narratives recalls the Puritan view of sympathy as a dangerously unstable emotion” (Schmidt 195). How does Schmidt suggest that having sympathy for a serial killer is a good thing/bad thing? Is that even possible? Why would we want that?
- Schmidt elaborates upon the long history of true crime novels with an extended analysis of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. How does this example apply to Psycho? Why would we want to become intimate with serial killers? What is the moral dilemma faced by those who come face-to-face with these killers? What is gained by seeing their stories?

Hello there, I need help with this English 101 (Critical Reading and Composition) assginment. I need someone who had read before and with full knowledge on the book Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter, by Tom Franklin.I need someone who has the book of course Humanities Assignment Help
Basically what I need is someone to prove the veracity of the following 3 paragraphs by providing direct quotations from the book in order to support them. So basically the task is to rewrite the same following 3 paragraphs but to add more information by putting into them direct quotations from the book to support the statements that are being used at the 3 paragraphs, that is the reason why is very important to have full knowledge on the book Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter, by Tom Franklin and to own the book too in order to realize this assignment. Here are the 3 paragraphs:
1.
Silas shows that he has strong beliefs in developing friendship with another person despite his or her social status. Silas and Larry grew up in the 1970s. However, they lived in different worlds. Larry is from a middle-class white family and Silas is from a poor black family (Franklin 10). So bad were Silas’ poverty levels that he lived in a cabin on Larry’s father’s land. The differences in the social status of the boys made it hard for them to develop a friendship in school, which means that they could barely acknowledge each other in the school halls. However, despite these differences they formed a secret bond by just being boys, where they participated in activities such as fishing and hunting together.
2.
Silas’ weakness as a friend is shown by the fact that he blocked Larry‘s effort of rekindling their friendship when they met again in high school. Larry and Silas had grown apart only for them to meet again in high school. During this time, Larry had been struggling with fitting in with the other students. He attempted to fit in by creating attention, but he received negative attention in most cases and thus failing miserably. Silas ignores Larry at school, which resulted in Larry being lonely. This made him pull dangerous stunts for other kids, such as reading horror books and bringing live snakes to school (Franklin 20). Conversely, Silas had developed as a confident young man. He had excelled in sports, which resulted in him studying on an athletic scholarship. While Larry tried to rekindle his friendship with him as an adult, Silas pushed off the advancements since he did not want to be seen or associated with Larry, who was considered by many the school half-wit (Franklin 20). Silas was more concerned about his high school reputation and thus disregarded Larry’s intentions of rekindling their friendship.
3.
Throughout the book, Larry is portrayed as a friend who is always there for Silas. He teaches Silas many things, but Silas does not teach Larry anything. For instance, Larry teaches Silas how to fish and hunt during their explorations around their homes. Larry also teaches Silas how to use a rifle and he even leaves his father’s rifle with Silas. While Larry has taught Silas many things, Silas fails to reciprocate. For instance, when Larry uses the word “nigger” to refer to his half-brother, Silas ends their friendship. Rather than teaching him that the word “nigger” was not welcomed in the black community, Silas decides to end their friendship, which highlights another weakness as a friend.
