Final Paper

Your good friends have just adopted a four-year-old child. At this point, the only socialization decision they have made is that the child is going to preschool. Imagine that you are an expert in your chosen field. Your friends have come to you for advice and to devise a plan to raise their child. They ask you to be frank with them and give them specific examples to support your opinions. They are determined to raise this child to the best of their ability. Since they are new parents, they need advice on everything!

The Final Paper should include the following:

1. Summarize Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model and describe why it is important for them to be aware of this theory.
2. Suggest and explain a parenting style/philosophy (authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive) that you believe will be most beneficial for the child and the family.
3. Explain which childcare (nanny, center-based, or family-based care) option (before/during/after preschool) you think is best for the child and why. Be sure to include discussion of the social factors that influence the likelihood of the family selecting a particular form of childcare.
4. Share specific suggestions, including at least two to implement safe technology use in the home. Explain how the media can (both positively and negatively) influence the child.
5. Discuss the importance of culture and ethnicity in the development of the self-concept. Share your ideas of ways that the new parents can create opportunities for the child to learn about his or her culture.
6. Describe at least two researched methods to increase the child’s self-esteem and positive attitude.
7. Differentiate between the importance of socialization that occurs in the home and at school. Explain the importance of each venue as a positive haven for the child.
8. Explain the importance of the teacher’s role in the child’s life. Give examples of how the school and the teacher will affect the child’s socialization.
9. Share the importance of positive peer interactions. Give two examples for the parents to implement at home to foster friendships.
10. The conclusion of the Final Paper should include the following:
    1. Brief discussion of the student’s future profession and how understanding the nature of families and children in relation to society is important for that profession.
    2. Discussion of how the student’s knowledge of the theories of socialization will impact his or her work in the future profession.
    3. Discussion of how the student’s understanding of child development will assist him or her in the chosen profession.

The Final Paper:

1. Must be seven double-spaced pages in length, not including the title page, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.).
2. Must include a title page with the following:
   1. Title of Final Paper
   2. Student’s name
   3. Course name and number
   4. Instructor’s name
   5. Date submitted
3. Must be well organized and reflect college-level writing.
4. Must be supported by at least five scholarly sources in addition to the text.

Here are five possible scenarios that once might face in their career.

Scenario 1: You work for a company that designs and builds vending machines. Your company has a bit of a problem in that the vending machines are designed so well that service calls, which your company bills for, are rare. In fact, sales representatives are reporting that they cannot sell service contracts as customers so rarely need service. A solution that has been mentioned is designing in a “trap door” in the software so that the vending machines will stop functioning after a certain number of cycles. A service technician can then complete a service call where a switch is reset and the machine is cleaned and inspected. The customer is billed for that service call, increasing revenue for your company.

Scenario 2: You work for a company that designs and manufactures ATMs. The ATMs are of extremely high quality and are recognized as the most reliable in the industry. However, competitors are focused on cost reduction and your company is now being underbid on new orders. A cost reduction team has been established and manufacturing costs have been targeted as a key area for cost reduction. As an example, significant money can be saved just on electrical connectors and terminal blocks by going with a new supplier. You suspect the cheaper parts will not provide the same reliability and safety.

Scenario 3: You work for a company that designs automotive control systems. Recently, a competitor has leapfrogged your company on a key business line with additional features and quality. Your manager hands you one of the competitor’s products and instructs you to copy the design quickly so that additional revenue is not lost.

Scenario 4: You identify a potential software bug in a medical device that could result in serious injury or even death. As you communicate your findings with your managers, you are made aware of just how costly it would be to fix the defect and your company would get a significant amount of bad publicity. Your managers are pointing out that there is no evidence that this defect has ever occurred and the product has been on the market for years.

Scenario 5: You are a senior design engineer for a robotics company. Throughout the years, you have developed a relationship with a sales engineer for a supplier. The sales engineer has provided training to your team and has gone above and beyond in assisting with technical issues in the past. The sales engineer tells you that his job is in jeopardy and if he does not get an upcoming supply contract from your company, he may be out of work. He asks you to take with your purchasing department and tell them of the extra value that this sales engineer provides for your team. You agree to do so, and the sales engineer thanks you and says “I really owe you. If this all works out and we get the contract, I would like to give you a gift card for a vacation so you and your family can enjoy a short weekend trip on me.”

Your paper should have four parts:

• The Scenario
  • Set up the scenario and provide some insight as to why you selected that scenario
• IEEE Code of Ethics
  • How does the IEEE Code of Ethics apply to the scenario?
  • Be specific and cite specific sections of the IEEE Code of Ethics.
• NSPE Code of Ethics
  • How does the NSPE Code of Ethics apply to the scenario?
  • Be specific and cite specific sections of the NSPE Code of Ethics.
• Summary
  • What is the action that you should take?

Virtual Team Successes and Stresses

A Case Study

As widespread as diverse and dispersed teaming is these days, leading a virtual team can be a challenge. This case study offers ideas on making the best of diverse and dispersed team structures.

Virtual teaming, that is, working on teams whose members are not present in the same location, is a fact of our modern, globalized business world. Virtual (or diverse and dispersed) teams are prevalent not only in multinational companies with offices in different countries, but also in academic and non-governmental institutions with bases across the world. In such team structures, members often have to communicate and collaborate with others who could be thousands of miles and many time zones apart.

As widespread as diverse and dispersed teaming is these days, leading a virtual team can be a challenge. Team leaders need to not only account for practical matters such as scheduling across time zones, but also technical issues such as varying rates of connectivity and access to communication platforms. However, one of the biggest factors in creating successful collaboration among diverse and dispersed teams is culture – specifically, tailoring the team’s mission, plans and procedures to the preferences of the different cultures represented on the team.

The following is a case study provided by a Cultural Navigator subject matter expert in diverse and dispersed teaming:

“A virtual team leader named Rebecca, originally from the United States, recently led a virtual project team with members from Japan, Mexico, Germany, Korea and the US. Rebecca was focused on setting the team up for success, and although she deliberately used strategies and tools made available by her company, she learned some valuable lessons along the way.

“Before initiating the project with a kick-off meeting, Rebecca made sure that everyone filled out their Cultural Orientations Indicator (COI) assessment to get to know their own work-style preferences. She then invited all members into a team message board on the Cultural Navigator, and encouraged them to share their profiles to better understand each other’s work-style preferences.

“The team was not able to have a face-to-face kick-off meeting, so during their first virtual meeting, every team member took time to introduce him or herself. The members talked about the different preferences in their team using the non-judgmental vocabulary of the Cultural Orientations Approach. At the end of the call, the team agreed on some ground rules for their upcoming teleconference and then closed the call.

“As the project continued, the team leader noticed that key team members were regularly not sharing their sales pipelines during their calls as agreed upon. Rebecca used humor during their sessions to lighten the mood, thinking some of the team members were nervous. However, she noticed the same people began to skip the calls, and were reluctant to speak when they were in attendance.”

In the above case study, the team leader Rebecca had done her due diligence in preparing the team to accommodate different cultural preferences among its members. But then she hit a snag. What had she done wrong?

The subject matter expert offered this reading of the situation: “In retrospect, Rebecca realized that even though she had set ground rules, she could have had an individual talk with each member before finalizing the team structure and processes. Perhaps in those discussions she would have understood that Woo-jin, her Korean colleague, worked in a strict hierarchical office environment and had to clear most decisions with his direct supervisor before sending anything to her. Woo-jin had hoped his team leader realized he did not have this approval, however Rebecca was not aware of this.

Similarly, the Japanese team member named Kamiko was concerned about the strict data protection laws in Japan, so she did not feel comfortable sharing her sales pipeline information. Kamiko had tried to indirectly convey this limitation to Rebecca, who wasn’t able to understand this message.

As for Rebecca’s use of humor during teleconferences, she did not realize how many cultural references she was using in her jokes, which her colleagues from outside her own culture had little understanding of.”

In essence, while Rebecca began the team’s collaboration with most of the components necessary for success, throughout the project duration, she learned the hard way that cultural mishaps often stall even the best plan.

While cultural due diligence and careful preparation are necessary components of working with a virtual team, the team leader and members need to exercise cultural awareness and cultural competence all along the way.

Though there can be challenges to working in diverse and dispersed teams, they are a fact of modern work life. The good news is that, when managed well, virtual teams can be as effective and productive as their traditional equivalents.
