SWOT Analysis Report for Verizon

Strengths

One of Verizon’s greatest strengths is their lead in the wireless communications market. They currently account for 32.3% of the US Market according to MarketLine. This is a great strength as the ease of entry in the wireless industry is low. With this supremacy, it is easy to weed out other smaller competitors. Their reputation is able to lead them when it comes to customer and business to business relations and marketing, and their market share means they have and will continue to function efficiently.

Another strength Verizon has is its 5G coverage and rollout. According to MarketLine, Verizon was one of the first companies to install 5G antennas and provide 5G coverage. This was a profitable and strong move. It provided them with a partnership with Apple that was able to encourage more customers to move to a 5G with the iPhone 12 (TechCrunch, 2020). With this head start Verizon is also able to market that they have the largest 5G coverage in the nation.

Weaknesses

Verizon has a few weaknesses at the moment. A glaring weakness that stands out is the liabilities and debts Verizon currently has. Obviously, it is not good for a company to have debts, and they can pile up and end up crippling or bankrupting a company if something goes wrong.

Another weakness is Verizon’s dependence on the US Market and their subscribers. This is true for two reasons. The first being Verizon’s data safety concerns. Verizon carries a bad reputation for its lack of data privacy, and in some cases selling data to third parties. In one case in  2020, the FCC proposed to fine Verizon $48.3 million for selling location information. The second reason is Verizon is at the whim of American problems as well. For example, during COVID 19, Verizon lost 68,000 subscribers, causing Verizon to pull its full-year revenue outlook. According to Reuters, this caused Verizon’s stock to drop 0.5% in one day. Verizon’s dependence on subscribers and the American market creates a great weakness for the company.

Opportunities

Heightened demand for connectivity, proposed government Infrastructure bill, and

merger and acquisition may serve as important opportunities for Verizon.

As the world moves towards virtualization, Verizon can play their competitive advantages to answer the demand for reliable connectivity. Many government, non-profit, and private entities shift to remote work, and therefore, would continue to need the services of reputable companies like Verizon.

Moreover, the government’s proposed $3 billion Infrastructure bill — which plans to allocate $65 billion toward internet deployment — poses an opportunity for Verizon. The said fund will go toward the expansion of broadband deployments in rural parts of the country, as well as address affordability. Verizon may take advantage of the planned subsidies through employment of strategic expansion plans.

Verizon could also benefit from major merger acquisition moves to further expand their customer base. A talk of Netflix acquisition, for example, could translate to increased market share, revenue, and portfolio growth.

Threats

Data breach and market competition remain the two major threats for Verizon.
In the past, Verizon underwent a series of cyber security issues. Although the company has invested in more advanced security systems and sophisticated monitoring, cyber attacks will always pose a threat to the company. Therefore, preventative action costs and litigation expenses will continue to demand a substantial amount of their resources.

Another threat that Verizon currently faces is the fierce competition in the industry. Its competitors AT&T and T-Mobile cover (Enter)  of the market share combined. The major telecommunication companies constantly compete on price, cost, and delivery of more advanced and innovative products and services.

External analysis

Verizon also faces additional external factors, many of which we explored using different analysis tools. We discovered by using Porter’s Five Forces that the lack of supplier options and the low cost for individuals, or companies, to switch wireless providers could be considered a weakness for Verizon. As the competitive rivalry continues to intensify due to the increasing demand for more advanced wireless internet access and services, the response to the difficult implementation of the 5G network could increase Verizon’s favorability. If Verizon is able to adapt to the changes in market demand and be the first to provide the upgraded enhanced 5G network, they will maintain their position in the industry.[supanova_question]
