The New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence is one agency that provides support to local domestic violence programs across the state, and they work with the NM Legislature to ensure laws are beneficial to the community (NMCADV, 2021). This prevention care is a primary level of care for the population because they are actively involved in what policies, processes, protocol and laws are beneficial to the population regarding domestic violence. They provide support to crisis centers, shelters for battered family, and behavioral health programs. The research they conducted has showed that violence is reduced and clients experience greater hope and self-efficacy when they are given the support, they need for DV advocates.

The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women is an agency that influences policy, increases awareness, and community outreach. They provide training and education to members that work in the domestic violence field, in care, sex trafficking, sexual violence in tribal communities, and other courses (CSVANW, 2021). They are dedicated to being on tribal and statewide committees to voice the needs and experiences of the Native American community. This is also a primary level of prevention, because it focuses on change by education and policy. This is an effective prevention program, because they show an impact report showing the youth, and communities are giving positive feedback.

Pathways Treatment Center is a department of Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell Mt. It provides acute inpatient services for individuals with mental health or substance abuse issues. Primary care is offered through short-term inpatient hospitalization, with a registered Nurse available to help with the screening and admission process. Admission is voluntary or a nonvoluntary emergency detention if deemed necessary.

For secondary care, medical and or psychiatric physicians are both available, as well as an assigned therapist that also acts as a counselor and case manager. An adolescent program is available in a separate wing of the treatment center, designed to assess, stabilize, and coordinate ongoing care for adolescents in crisis and their families. Treatment is also available for co-occurring disorders to address both psychological/emotional and chemical dependency issues concurrently. This helps patients identify the interdependent relationships between their mental health and chemical dependency issues. Activities include daily group therapy, life skills, recreational therapy to help teach effective coping skills. chemical dependency evaluation, if needed and family meetings. In addition, this facility also provides additional help by providing a public defender to help with any court proceedings.

Tertiary care includes services that require more attention such as 24-hour medically monitored detoxification services, Daily visits by a medical physician, Around-the-clock nursing monitoring, medication administration by physician order, full therapeutic services, as tolerated by the patient and ASAM Level 3.7 (medically monitored intensive inpatient services, as defined by the American Society of Addiction Medicine). Another facility available in the Kalispell Mt. area is the Western Montana Mental Health Center. One service offered is for substance abuse treatment for adults and children. Primary care includes an initial assessment. After completion, a treatment plan is created to determine whether the individual meets the criteria for inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, or residential housing. Treatment involves individual and group therapy, medication assisted treatment (MAT), community support and programs specializing in women with children and veterans.

Western Montana Mental Health Center also provides comprehensive mental treatment programs for adults, teens, and children. Common conditions include depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, trauma, borderline personality, and most other conditions. Secondary care includes outpatient treatment programs that include an in-depth assessment, outpatient, and intensive outpatient individual or group therapy, relapse prevention and substance use disorder day treatment. In addition, there are also specializations in care for individuals with substance use while driving convictions with their ACT (DUI) program, and the Misdemeanor Dangerous Drug services program (MDD) offering intervention services on a continual basis for individual receiving a MDD citation.

Inpatient care could be considered tertiary care. This program is specifically designed to meet the needs of adults and their families who are affected by substance use disorders, and co-occurring substance use/mental health disorders. Treatment is led by an interdisciplinary team of licensed professionals, including inpatient crisis stabilization, and individual and group therapy addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs and detox and medical management services. They also specialize in integration of vocational support into the entire treatment process.

Two agencies in my community that provide prevention care are Coastal Connections and the Yurok Tribe. Both of these agencies offer effective primary prevention care, being that they focus on preventing new cases of mental health issues and/or SUD, and suicide, respectively (Conyne, Horne, & Raczynski, 2013). Coastal connections might dip into secondary prevention slightly, aiming to lower cases. However, they do not stretch beyond early intervention. The Yurok Tribe’s Youth Prevention Program does not go beyond primary prevention, as they focus only suicide prevention, and it would be impossible to reverse cases. Their program rose from a state of emergency on their reservation in 2016 (SPRC, 2016).

What makes Coastal Connections effective is the youth who utilize the access to a mental health specialist, free of charge, not only helping to reduce mental health disorder crises but also helping to reduce stigma in the community. Yurok Youth Prevention Program is effective because the number of youth suicides on the reservation has dropped.
