First, read and annotate Chapter 7, and hone in on sample student research paper, showing a student’s philosophical approach (lens) to a claim (Gardner and Diaz 131-134). WRITING INSTRUCTIONS AND PROMPT

• Choose a literary research essay topic, which means select ONE cultural context theme you find most interesting and its manifestation in the works you have read. Cultural context looks at the society the characters live in and at how their culture can affect their behavior and their opportunities. Think about where and when each text is set. Think about the values and attitudes that matter to these characters and about how they formed these beliefs.
• Select TWO different genres we’ve read in class thus far. One must be a play, Othello, and the other must be a short story OR a poem (from the Module). Structure your conversation in a way that integrates these two genres to support your claim. (See excerpt example below.)
• Integrate at least one counter-argument (as indicated in TSIS) toward the end of the essay, the last two or three paragraphs.

Sigmund Freud tells us, “Unexpressed emotions will never die. Literature shows how powerful forces, such as repression in marriage, can be deadly depending on how society expects married people (characters) to behave. The main female character, Desdemona, in William Shakespeare’s play, Othello, and the main female character, Mrs. Mallard, in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” live in a society where women are required to behave in ways that perpetuate their repression. Both women live in a culture representative of how women were treated in their respective era. Othello, written in 1603, is set in England while “The Story of an Hour,” written in 1894, is set in the United States. Arguably, these two stories reveal how cultural forces established by society do in fact influence not only the repressive state of the main characters, but it also influences those around them in negatives ways.
