The Path-Goal model is a theory based on specifying a leader’s style or behavior that best fits the employee and work environment in order to achieve a goal (House, 1971).
Strengths and Weakness of Path-Goal Theory
Two Strengths
- Path-goal theory provides a useful theory to help us understand how different leadership behaviors affect the satisfaction and work behavior of subordinates.
- Path-goal theory provides a practical model that helps leaders see the important ways in which they can help subordinates (Path Goal Theory, 2017).
Two Weaknesses
- Path-goal theory is so complex and incorporates so many different aspects of leadership that interpreting the meaning of the theory can be confusing (Cote, 2017).
- Path-goal theory treats leadership as a one-way event. It assumes that the leader affects the subordinate, but the follower does not affect the leader. As we know, leadership is about the interaction between leaders, followers, and situations.
Situational Leadership vs. Path Goal Theory
In Situational Leadership I (SLI), it was based on the relationship between the two dimensions (task and behavior) and maturity. It is divided into four quadrants based on relationship and task, which are quadrant I (high task/low relationship), quadrant II (high task/high relationship), quadrant III (low task/high relationship), and quadrant IV (low task/low relationship). The Path-Goal Theory suggests that leaders choose a leadership behavior that correlates to the work being done and best fits their needs of the individual. As an effective leader, they attend to the needs of subordinates, set goals, determine path (outcome), and help provide support when obstacles arise in reaching goal accomplishment (House & Mitchell, 1974).
Valid Leadership
I would not deem path-goal theory to be a leadership type because it picks the traits and skills to be brought forward based on opinions. the path-goal theory does not seem to be a practical leadership approach since it utilizes some guesswork to predict what actions a leader should take towards his or her followers (Crace, 2014). On the other hand, the theory’s basis for motivating followers is also based on some perceptional guesswork as well.

A brief description of two strengths and two limitations of Path-Goal Theory as applied in the field of public health.
The Path-Goal theory is based on the premise that the leader’s role is to remove obstacles that will enhance and facilitate followers to accomplish a set goal (Nahavandi, 2014). The two strengths of Path-Goal leadership theory are flexibility and motivation. According to Bickle (2017), Path-Goal theory type of leadership enables leaders to develop effective teams and followers through clear communication of goals and expectations, motivations, and removing obstacles that could potentially hinder progress and achievement of set goals. However, the Path-Goal leadership theory has some weaknesses, such as one-way flow of power and vulnerability to failure due to over-dependency on leadership style. Nahavandi (2014) denotes that the inability of the leader to set clear goals, remove obstacles, or any derail in follower’s expectations could lead to failure of accomplishment of set goals or eventual collapse of the organization.
Then, compare (similarities and differences) Path-Goal Theory to Situational Theory of leadership.
Similarities of both Leadership styles include the concept of leader’s flexibility and easy to navigate their leadership style based on the task and situation. The cooperation of followers is also needed for a successful outcome for both leadership styles. Also, while the leader in Path-Goal theory enjoys one-way traffic directives; Situational leadership requires the collaboration of followers to achieve set goals.
Finally, explain whether Path-Goal Theory is a valid theory of leadership. Justify your response.
The assumption of Path-Goal theory as a valid theory is based on the premise that effective leadership involves the leader’s ability to influence followers to achieve set goals (Nahavandi, 2014). According to Asamani et al., (2016) leadership is defined as the art and process of influencing and motivating followers to strive to achieve a set goal for the
organization. For instance, a nurse manager will do all she can to ensure adequate staffing of their unit. To achieve this goal, the unit manager will be willing to pay overtime to influence nurses to work extra hours, especially during an acute nursing shortage. In light of the situational aspect and the expectancy model of motivation, the Path-Goal theory could be justified as a valid leadership theory.

The path-goal model of leadership is based on a relationship between the leader and follower whereby the leader directs the follower’s attention and efforts towards work goals and articulates the paths by which to achieve them (Nahavandi, 2015). The path-goal theory of leadership delineates four basic styles: directive, supportive, participative, and achievement-oriented, which are deployed as they fit the work environment and the follower’s need (Glynn & DeJordy, 2010).
One obvious strength of this model is that it is very practical as it provides a useful theoretical framework for understanding how various leadership behaviors affect the satisfaction of the subordinates and their performance. In addition, it reminds leaders of their purpose which is to guide and coach employees as they move along the path to achieve a goal. On the other hand, this model fails to explain adequately the relationship between leadership behavior and worker motivation. There is also a need for clarity of what constitutes effective leadership because this model only considers the follower’s perspective to measure success. In order words, it uses employee satisfaction as a criterion for leadership effectiveness (Nahavandi, 2015).
Then, compare (similarities and differences) Path-Goal Theory to Situational Theory of leadership. Be specific.
The situational leadership model offers specific suggestions on how leaders should adapt to different situations. Whereas the path-goal theory suggests that leaders consider their employees’ skills before assigning responsibilities, convince employees of their abilities to perform the assigned tasks, and reward those who exceed expectations (Basu, n.d.). Both theories both have a directing category in which the leader’s main attention is given to providing directions, and a supporting style which fosters team building and encourages followers to participate in the decision-making.
Finally, explain whether Path-Goal Theory is a valid theory of leadership.
Just like any other leadership model, the path-goal theory has its flaws, and this does not mean that it is not a valid theory. Despite these flaws, this model constitutes an important contribution to the body of knowledge about leadership. the Path-Goal Theory contributes to our understanding of leadership by once more focusing attention on the behavior of providing guidance and support to followers. It adds to other models, such as Fiedler’s Contingency Model, by including followers’ perceptions of the task and the role of the leader in removing blocks to task accomplishment (Nahavandi, 2015).

Description of Assessment
The purpose of the project is to provide each candidate with an opportunity to utilize human capital management and strategic planning skills to plan for school or organizational improvement. The human capital may include teachers and/or school and district leaders or other employees. The activities call upon the candidate to develop and articulate a plan to build capacity, assess the current status of the school or organization in relation to the plan, and ensure that when the plan is put into operation it will serve to close the gap between the status quo and the desired outcomes articulated in the plan.
A GAP ANALYSIS PLAN
Students may choose an area, a gap that they note in their current school or organization or the situation could be fictional. Students will identify the gap and share data etc. as appropriate. Then the student will identify an option to address the gap. There are three parts to this work and an attention to six questions within the work are to be addressed. See below. Here are some suggestions students can use as part of action plans to address the gap:
- A new curriculum structure or program to address a gap
- A new school or workplace schedule to address a gap
- A new program to address a gap
- A new professional development plan
- A choice by the student as approved by the instructor
The work should reflect established practices and be attentive to the critical functions and operation of the school or organization, and should be developed with consideration of the following six questions. As students compose the plan they may choose where each of the six questions fit within the work. For example, for the #5, professional development, the student may choose to include this in Part III in the action plan as one strategy to address the gap or the student could choose a new Professional Plan as the overarching goal of the entire plan.
Think about each of the six questions below and be sure to address these within an area of your plan. Please note after each question the area suggested within the paper to note this question. Students may choose where within the paper to address the questions.

Overview
Principals and supervisors are expected to build capacity among the professional staff to continuously improve instruction and student achievement and organizational goals. Building capacity involves, among other things, providing appropriate opportunities for educators to participate in professional learning communities. The activities comprising this key assessment provide candidates with an opportunity to utilize knowledge and practice skills that are salient to capacity building within the school or organization and to design a plan to address a gap that addresses the questions 1-6 above.

Introduction: Via this assessment, candidates will demonstrate knowledge and skills needed to develop and articulate a plan to build capacity within the professional staff in a school. The assessment is purposely designed to be broad enough in nature to allow the candidates to approach the work using various approaches. Plans should be based upon recent literature and other relevant sources of information, and should be feasible (i.e. plans and recommendations should be mindful of real-life constraints like provisions contained in state regulations, [e.g., timelines required in the FL DOE School Improvement Plan], local policies, and collective bargaining agreements).
The assessment assignment comprises three parts:
Part I: Think of this as the “Where” in describing the location and the “What” in terms of describing the gap. In the first section (2-3 pages double-spaced), candidates will describe the school or location and analyze the current status of the school or organization with regard to capacity-building and professional learning in order to define the gap between the current status and the status envisioned for the school/organization in section I. Here, candidates should provide data and/or other evidence (e.g., the school’s SIP, interviews with relevant professional staff) to support claims about current status. The “gap” description should clearly describe (and, when possible, quantify) the difference between the current reality and the vision articulated in Part III. The inclusion of data in this section to clearly show the gap is recommended.
Part II: Think of this as the “Why” in establishing the purpose of the needed changes to address the gap and why you will include all stakeholders, shared decision making in the planning and processes. In this section you should also explain the vision, the goal. What would be optimal? In the second section (2-3 pages, double-spaced), candidates will expand upon the purpose of the plan and develop a vision for what his/her school could do to build capacity among the professional staff via shared decision making to support instruction and improve the organization, and student achievement via data use and/or professional development. The intent here is to imagine the candidate’s school/organization as it would look operating at optimal effectiveness with regard to capacity-building and professional learning. The vision should reflect knowledge of established practices for professional learning, be attentive to relevant constraints and resources/opportunities, and should focus on building capacity that will support continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
Part III: Think of this as the “How” in how you plan to address the gap. What are your action steps, your plan?This part of the paper may be in the form of a narrative or charts, lists of steps for the Action Plan with descriptors of what is needed and how will progress be demonstrated and measured. In the third section (3-4 pages double-spaced and this can be formatted in a chart form or other design if the student so chooses), candidates will develop an action plan that describes concrete steps that could be taken to move the school or organization from where it is now to the vision described in the first section (i.e., to close the gap described in part II). Although knowledge of concepts and theories undergirding school or organizational leadership ought to inform thinking about the plan, the plan itself should be presented in a highly practical format (including but not limited to timelines, barriers to be reduced or eliminated, responsible persons for individual plan elements/phases [by position if not by name—e.g., staff member, consultant, district office, etc.], participants, dates, monitoring).
